Lets take care and enjoy St Paddy’s Day ! With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed, we at Locals Magazines are like you, thankful we may be beginning to enjoy life again. Plans are going ahead for our first proper St Patrick’s Day in two years. Children and community groups are spending their time organising and decorating floats. Bands from all over the country are heading for our towns and villages in Fingal and Dublin city. We look forward to the sea of green, the music, and the joy of the spectacular parades celebrating our patron saint’s day that are the envy of the world. However we realise we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of variants of Covid 19 nationwide if we don’t continue to take care. Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past two years. In celebrating the re-opening after lockdown we should recall local shops and enterprises going above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly during the lockdown and now it time to give back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print during this crisis. With some experts predicting yet another phase if we are not careful, we must all continue to grasp this new era and continue to pull together. This means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Spring is here and life is good! By Siobhan O’Neill White Springtime has arrived! Daffodils are popping up; we’ve got an extra bank holiday for St Patricks’ Day and Mother’s day is fast approaching. Life is good. There is so much to enjoy this month and finally, after 2 years of being cocooned away, we can now get out and about again. For Mother’s day this month, make sure to let all the wonderful Mother’s know how much they mean to us. Whether you are lucky to be a Mammy yourself, want to spoil your own Mammy or Granny or treat a special someone in your life who is a mother figure, there are loads of ways to thank them. You can splash out and take her out for a nice meal, Gourmet Food Parlour is a favourite spot of our in Skerries. If you are staying in, why not cook your Mammy a special dinner! Heaven knows, she has cooked enough family dinners over the years! As a Mammy myself, I love to get a card and have my children do something nice for me. It’s not about the gifts, its more about the gestures of kindness. Having someone else cook dinner while I get a half an hour to myself in the bath is the kind of treat I love. My number one request for the day is no squabbling…..though my 4 children rarely make to through the full day on that one! Last year we lost my Mother-in-law and this Mother’s day we will be taking some time to reflect and remember

her. We will go visit her grave and bring flowers. It won’t be the same without her and she will be a part of our day – even though it will be sad and difficult, it’s so important to honour her memory as the wonderful Mam and Nanna she was. We are planning to plant a tree in our garden in her memory and whenever it flowers, we will be

reminded of her. Our children will help plant it too, so hopefully they will feel a connection to it as well. Whatever you get up to this Patrick’s Day and Mother’s Day, enjoy the friends and family you share it with and be happy that we are finally out of the many lockdowns we have had to endure!

Silver fern planted in Malahide to mark Waitangi Day

The close ties between Ireland and New Zealand were on display today as Ambassador Brad Burgess visited Malahide Castle and Gardens for a special silver fern planting ceremony to help commemorate Waitangi Day. The silver fern is a species endemic to New Zealand, dating back to the Pliocene epoch (around 5 to 1.8 million years ago). It has been accepted as a symbol of New Zealand’s national identity since the 1880s and has special significance to the Māori people as the elegant shape of the fronds stood for strength, stubborn resistance, and enduring power.The visitor attraction at Malahide is well known for housing a tremendous range of species from the Southern Hemisphere thanks to the 7th Baron Malahide, Milo Talbot, who introduced many rare trees and shrubs to the grounds. Over the last 12 months work has been undertaken to further expand the collection of New Zealand flora

at the site, with over 25 different varieties of Phormiums planted. The special New Zealand Garden within the grounds also features a Māori hut and a stunning Pouwhenua sculpture by Irish woodcarver Richie Clarke. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Seána Ó Rodaigh, said: “Kia ora e kare ma, Fáilte romhat go Mullach Íde! I am delighted to welcome Ambassador Burgess for this commemorative silver fern planting ceremony to help celebrate Waitangi Day. New Zealand Ambassador, Brad Burgess, said: “It’s great to be able to be here to add to the New Zealand Gardens in Fingal, and especially to see such a wonderful silver fern coming into the collection. Waitangi Day is a really important celebration for all New Zealanders around the world, the birthdate of our modern nation. There’s a significant Irish connection too, as William Hobson who crafted the treaty was born in Waterford and became our first Governor.

What if your income gets stopped? By Dave Kavanagh When advising clients and analysing their finances, I ask them how long (if at all) their employer will pay them if they are out of work long term due to illness or injury. In some cases, it is standard and can be something like 3 months at full pay, then 3 months at half pay and then a pensionable rate of pay. For many, they are not sure and when they look through their employment contract, it states “at employer’s discretion”. Many people realised how vulnerable they were when the pandemic arrived, dropping some incomes from €600 or €800 per week down to €350 of PUP. Many don’t give much consideration to how they would cope if they suffered a loss of income for an extended period because they think “it’ll never happen to me”. Sadly, many find out the hard way following an injury or illness that keeps them out of work for months or even years. This is where having Income Protection in place, can be the difference between maintaining a level of income that keeps your lifestyle virtually unchanged, or dropping to a level that could force you to use up any savings and also get into financial difficulty. So how does it work? Depending on your circumstances, you choose an appropriate level of cover. This is based on not exceeding 75% of your salary, less any state income entitlement. You also

choose a “deferred period” which refers to how long you are off work before payments commence. The premiums are based on factors like your age and occupation, as some occupations would leave you more at risk of not being able to work. There is also tax relief on premiums paid for income protection, which could mean up to 40% of your premium is refunded by way of adjusting your tax credits. If dropping from your current income to the state benefit of €208 per week is something that would impact badly on you, perhaps it is time to consider.

Fingal goes green once again for St Patrick’s Day Parades Following the announcement that most Covid-19 restrictions were being lifted, Fingal County Council have been quick to confirm that they are ready to welcome a return of the annual St Patrick’s Day Parades to the streets of Fingal after a two-year absence. The Council has outlined that while official parades are set to take place in Swords, Blanchardstown and Balbriggan, community groups in Rush, Lusk and Skerries will also host celebrations on 17 March via the Council’s Festival and Events Funding Scheme. The theme this year is “Essential Workers”, chosen to thank the thousands of frontline staff for their tremendous hard work and dedication throughout the pandemic. The Council is also looking to make it a truly green parade by making it a carbon neutral event. Announcing the parades, Mayor of Fingal Cllr Seána Ó Rodaigh said: “The annual St Patrick’s Day parades held across the County have always been a highlight on the events calendar, so I am absolutely thrilled that we are able to get the crowds back once again where they can enjoy a full day of music, song and dance. “Reducing carbon emissions is very much at the heart of our thinking and to that end we want to be the first local authority in Ireland

That’s why we are asking that only electric or hybrid vehicles be used on the routes, along with anyone who is choosing to run, scoot, cycle, or walk. “Táim ag súil go mór le gach duine a fheiceáil ag ceiliúradh don chéad uair le cúpla bliain anuas. Great work ongoing to drain Malahide Allotments

A picture album of the great work being carried out by the volunteer crew of allotment holders - AKA- the Water Rats - as they look to take control of the draining and alleviation of flooding issues that has blighted the facility in recent years. Despite challenging conditions inclement weather, the good news is that progress is being made and the drain ditches and now helping to empty the surface water that has limited access to holders in recent times.

Being clear on what your long term game plan is and recording your daily wins will help get you through the dip.So if the scales goes up this week by 1kg but you know, you are hitting your steps every day,you are training well and you are staying in a calorie deficit, you can persevere knowing that you are showing up every day and if you keep doing what you are doing that you will achieve results long term.Whereas if you decide to quit while you are in the dip, you may be giving up too soon and will inevitably put yourself back where you started or back to something that you have always done.. joining slimming clubs or cutting out bread.On the other hand, creating a strategy for quitting something may be of benefit to you.You decide you want to

start running, to lose weight. But before you start you set a reason or quitting; if you done it like it or have not seen any progress in a few weeks then you’ll quit running and try something else instead. So you are then 3 weeks into your new running programme, you’re not seeing progress and you absolutely detest putting on your running shoes.Guess what.. it is time to quit because those were the terms you decided on at the start. Kileen Terrace Malahide – The Dowry Terrace

by Malahide Historical Society Standing across the road from St. Sylvester’s Church, this elegant terrace of four three-bay three-storey 19th century houses is recessed from the street by a common garden fronted by railings set between stone pillars. Nos. 1 and 4 have bays extending the full height of their facades. Until recently, a curious damaged sculpture was to be seen on the roof parapet at the centre of the terrace which appeared to be a representation of a sea lion but this has lately disappeared. (Does anyone have information on its whereabouts?). The construction of No.1 commenced in 1842 and No. 4 was completed eight years later. Though a terrace, each house is slightly different. An 1850 watercolour (present whereabouts unknown)

depicts the terrace with scaffolding around No 4. John Killeen of Millview House and later Seapark House built the terrace as a potential marriage dowry for his only child. However, she entered a religious order in Dumfries, Scotland, where she rose to the position of Abbess before her death in 1918. As a consequence, the terrace was sometimes referred to as the Dowry Terrace. However, by 1862, John Killeen was in financial difficulty as the Official Assignee was advertising the sale of : “the title and interest of the Bankrupt, John Killeen...in the two Plots of Ground situate at Malahide... with the four commodious and first-class dwelling houses thereon, with outhouses, offices and gardens, and known as Killeen-terrace (in the erection of which the bankrupt expended a sum of nearly £4,000), held

under two leases from Lord Talbot de Malahide to the bankrupt, for 99 years from 1st May, 1849, at the yearly rents of £20 and £2 18s.; there is yet space for the erection of other houses. Three of the said houses are let to respectable tenants, and produce £162 10s annually. The fourth house is unlet, but was lately let at a rent of £60 a year.The local Presbyterian community, having unsuccessfully petitioned Lord Talbot in 1891 for a site for a church, shortly afterwards acquired an interest in No.2 Killeen Terrace. This remained their place of worship until they moved into their newly built church on the Dublin Road in 1956. This building was partly financed by the sale of No.2 Killeen Terrace. Scrumptious protein pancakes just for you Protein has become a bit of a buzz word and although most of us in Ireland DO eat enough protein for what our bodies need, a lot of us tend to eat the majority of our protein in our evening meal. Research has shownthat it is more beneficial to try and eat food sources of protein throughout the day rather than a load all at once! Having protein in this way and especially following exercise that uses our muscles will help to keep our muscle and our bodies lean. And the great news is that applies to everyone, no matter your age. Here is a recipe for ‘protein pancakes’ which uses basic food ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen!

Ingredients

Makes 5 x 100g FULFILLING Pancakes!!!

3 eggs 200g oats 300ml high protein milk 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Method 1. Blitz the oats in a blender/nutri bullet until they turn into a flour like mix. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until mixed thoroughly. 3. Heat a non stick pan. 4. When the pan is hot pour some of the mixture on and allow to cook for 2-3 minutes. (Covering the pancakes will help them cook faster). 5. When the edges start to lightly brown and look dry and bubbles start appearing

on the pancake surface,flip the pancake over and cook the other side. Top them off as you like and GOBBLE EM UP!!!! (I love mine with peanut butter, sliced banana and dark chocolate drizzled on top as a scrumptious and VERY satisfying treat!)
