Tenants call for a coffee at St Benedicts

Here at St. Benedicts, we have been working hard to improve the overall appearance of the complex. We have recently invested in some window boxes, hanging baskets and plants and we have a dedicated an area for wildflowers to attract bees and butterflies. With some help from volunteers and our residents, we planted up the boxes and hanging baskets. A lovely couple from Seabury donated an outdoor sofa for our residents to enjoy. This really brings enhances and brings our new space together. In other news, going forward we will be able to invite our tenants back to our lovely community centre. We will continue to follow government guidelines but our tenants are delighted to be able to call up for a coffee for the first time since March 2020.

by Ewan Snow On the 3rd of August; Myself, Mark Matthews and Mark Mitchell set off on our quest to cycle from the most southern point of Ireland (Mizen Head, Co. Cork) to the most northern point of Ireland (Mallin Head, Co. Donegal). We decided to set ourselves this task over one of the previous lockdowns as we became aware of the difficulties The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre were facing with fundraising. The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre over the years have had many fundraising events which help greatly towards the funding of their work but due to covid restrictions such events were cancelled and The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre are now relying on donations to help them keep up their great work. We set off on the 3rd of August, getting the train to Cork City and then a bus to Skibbereen. From Skibbereen we ended up cycling 50k to Mizen Head and then we were at our starting point. By day 8 we set sights on Derry, cycling through the beautiful city and eventually arriving in the quiet village of Muff just at the Donegal border. Day 9, Mallin is only 50k away, the morale is at a high, we leave early and just as we leave the rain clears up and sun comes through. As we entire Mallin Head Village it’s nice and warm for the first time all week and we are in awe of the beautiful landscape. Eventually arriving at Mallin Head we get a new lease of life and cycle up the final climb to be rewarded with the feeling of accomplishment. We arrive at our destination with no accidents and no mechanical issues. All our hard work has paid off and as we arrive we reach €1,000 on our iDonate page for the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre. Without doubt the most exhausting week of my life but worth it. Knowing we are helping such a great cause and all the support from people kept us motivated. A week we will never forget. Our iDonate page isn’t finished yet, it will remain open till September 10th and we would really appreciate any donations to help the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre fund their marvellous work. Fingal County Council Welcomes New Street Malahide Decision

Fingal County Council has welcomed a recent High Court decision to refuse an application for an injunction to reverse the pedestrianisation of New Street in Malahide. The judicial review proceedings are to be dealt with at a later date.The Council pedestrianised New Street to provide a safe outdoor space which facilitated social distancing and outdoor dining in line with Government policy and NPHET recommendations around living with Covid-19. The result was a safe environment for the community to enjoy and

go about their daily business, an opportunity for local businesses to operate under Covid-19 conditions and a Pedestrian Friendly, Age Friendly, Family Friendly and Cyclist Friendly Zone.The Council is currently considering permanent public realm enhancements at New Street for the benefit of the community and business. The Council has already committed to further consultation in this regard.

‘Go hard or go home’ mentality is outdated

By Ciaran Russell You will have heard this phrase ‘Go Hard or Go Home’ before but maybe this mentality is hindering your progress. How often you rest will directly impact on how you adapt to the training stimulus. By training too hard for a long period of time you run the risk of overtraining. This doesn’t have to mean a complete break from your exercise programme; it can be lighter sessions or different exercise than what you had been doing for the previous weeks. The reason rest is an overlooked part of training is because when you stress the

body for a number of weeks doing the same or very similar exercises or activity your nervous system won’t have a chance to play catch up and you will eventually crash. When this happens, you may feel very tired, you might experience some cold or flu symptoms and you may find your mood is off. These are typical signs that you need to take the foot off the gas. When you have a balanced training programme of intense exercise coupled with proper rest your body will have sufficient time to adapt and recover in a way that will positively benefit you and your training goals. A ‘go hard or go home’ or ‘no pain no gain’

mentality is outdated. Too many people go all in at the very beginning of a new fitness programme in order to race to the end to see the amazing results only to give up a few weeks later. But if you accept that fitness will be a lifetime endeavor you can plan your goals better and will enjoy your training more. How Budgeting Smarter Can Increase Your Funds By Dave Kavanagh Making a little time occasionally to go through your finances and budgeting, can be very rewarding and leave you with more money left over each month. A few practical tips: Carefully study 3 months’ bank statements. Make sure that you can account for every single trans-action. On a regular basis, I encounter people who have been paying for things that they should not be, direct debits they forgot to cancel.Make a detailed list for grocery shopping (and don’t shop while hungry). This leads to only buying what you actually need, a lower bill at the till and less throwing out of food gone off. Compare before you shop for larger items. Just because one store has a fridge you want reduced from €950 to €850 in their “Sale”, does not mean another store nearby that does not currently have a sale on, is not selling the same one for €799. Compare utility providers. Whether it’s electricity, gas, broadband, mobile phone service or similar, there can be substantial savings to be had by switching to better deals. Check when car/house insurance renew-als arrive. Don’t automatically accept a renewal premium without checking around. A few phone calls could save

you hundreds of euro.Review premiums on life cover/mortgage protection/serious illness cover. Especially if you arranged it directly with a bank or insurance company that could not compare. In over 20 years of helping people with their finances, I have never seen anyone NOT make savings by doing the above. Your Guide to the EU Digital Covid Certificate Europe Direct Blanchardstown has published a series of video interviews on the topic of the EU Digital Covid Certificate.The aim of the interview series is to inform the public as to the purpose of the certificate and how it can be used to facilitate travel within the European Union. The interviews were organised by Europe Direct Manager Siobhan Walshe and recorded by Assistant Coordinator Barry O’Carroll.There were three interviewees in total:Barbara Nolan– Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland.Barbara discussed the Digital Covid Certificate from an EU perspective including the purpose of the certificate and how it will facilitate travel within the EU. Ossian Smyth - Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. Guide Dogs - Global Accessibility Awareness In our digital world it can be difficult for a person with low vision or blindness to use social media. ‘Jaws’ is a screen reader used by many including Guide Dog owner Tom O’Neill from Balbriggan, Co Dublin. In their video, Guide Dogs Australia highlight 3 important tips we should be familiar with. Tip 1: Good Punctuation. Use a full stop at the end of a sentence or phrase to indicate to ascreen reader the end of the text. Example: Irish Guide Dogs. When using a symbol such as @ in an email address, each separate word should be capitalised. Example: GuideDogsBalbriggan@gmail.com otherwise the screen reader sees a jumble of letters guidedogsbalbriggan@gmail.com. Tip 2: High Contrast. Some eye conditions distort a person’s view of things, so colours used are important. A yellow line on a white background can be very difficult to see but a yellow line on a black background is easier to see. Use geometric shapes on advertisements.Example: A large black arrow on a white background could be used to point out important information. In Australia they use large black and white arrows to indicate where the door on a tram is. We could do something similar in Ireland on buses, Luas, DART and trains. Tip 3: Be open and flexible. If approached by someone with low vision or blindness for help, listen to them and work out a solution to the problem together. Be open to new ideas. Event Programme is launched for Dublin Climate Action Week

The event programme and online registration have launched for Dublin’s first Climate Action Week (DCAW21), taking place from Monday 13th to Sunday 19th September 2021. A range of online and in-person climate action events are now open for registration at www.dublinclimateactionweek. ie. The broad range of events address the theme areas of Energy & Buildings, Transport, Flood Resilience, Nature Based Solutions, Resource Management and Citizen Engagement.The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Climate Change 2021 Report, categorically underlines the need for urgent action on climate change by all sectors of society. One

of the highlights of the DCAW21 Programme includes a Climate Action Panel Discussion with the Chief Executives of the four Dublin local authorities, taking place online on Tuesday 14th September 2021 at 10am. A number of online film screenings are planned, and outdoor climate film screenings will take place at venues across Dublin. There are also a range of family events, including workshops for children and guided walks in public parks. The Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the Mayors of South Dublin County Council and Fingal County Council, and the Lord Mayor of Dublin City Council, have jointly stated in

the online Programme Promotional Video: ‘The Dublin Region is acting on climate change causes and impacts, and we are making positive changes. We’ve organised Dublin’s first ever Climate Action Week, to showcase our climate action progress to the people of Dublin and elsewhere. We’ve launched an exciting programme of events across a range of themes. There is something for everyone. Super Cereal Bars “Back to work, school or college after the Summer break may mean back to routine but it doesn’t have to mean back to bad habits! Autumn is the season for change and what better way to start the new school year than on a healthy note. A lot of cereal bars in shops are loaded with sugar which give an instant energy high but this is rapidly followed by an energy crash and cravings for more sweet foods. These cereal bars below are tasty but very satisfying and filling. Not to mention they are so simple to make and contain only 5 ingredients which are very commonplace in many homes. 16

Ingredients

Makes 15 bars • 500g muesli (No added sugar) • 200mls milk • 100g nut butter (Peanut/almond/ cashew etc.) • 4 tablespoons honey • 150g dark chocolate to coat on top

Method 1. Make a well in the centre of the muesli in a mixing bowl. Add the milk and using a knife make an ‘X’ in the mixture, mixing the milk into the muesli. 2. Add the honey and nut butter and combine together. 3. Spread onto a baking tray with grease proof paper and freeze for 4

hours or overnight. 4. Just before removing from the freezer, melt the dark chocolate and then spread it on top of the mixture. 5. Place the mixture back in the freezer for another hour. Make sure it is quite solid. Then cut it up and gobble up! Try store some in a lunchbox in the freezer so that they last the week!!
