First Phase of Malahide to Sutton Greenway opened

Mayor of Fingal Eoghan O’Brien, Councill officials, Councillors and Consultant Engineers Atkins.

The Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien has officially opened the new €2.5m Baldoyle to Portmarnock walking and cycling greenway project, a vital first phase of the overall Sutton to Malahide Greenway Scheme.The 1.8km greenway, which enjoys spectacular views over the coastline is located in the Racecourse Park, will allow cyclists and pedestrians to travel through the park parallel to the Coast road linking Baldoyle with Portmarnock. Co-funded by the National Transport Authority, the route was designed by Atkins, taking specific account of the coastal setting and ecology of the area and was constructed by Murphy International. It features a three-metre wide cycletrack and two-metre wide footpath separated by a 2.4-metre wide grass verge, with short sections of shared used paths at some points along the route. Design and planning work on the next phase of the project, linking the greenway to Sutton and Malahide, through Portmarnock village is already underway.The Sutton to Malahide Greenway will ultimately link into the Broadmeadow Greenway which was granted planning permission by An Bord Pleanála last month and which will connect Malahide and Donabate across the railway viaduct. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien said: “I am delighted to formally open the Portmarnock to Baldoyle Greenway. It’s a wonderful new facility for local people as well as visitors to the area. It is the first section of what will be the Sutton to Malahide Greenway route, which will also tie in with the Broadmeadow Way, and ultimately the Fingal Coastal Way.“Since access was opened along the route, it has been heavily used by walkers and cyclists. It is a stretch of road that had previously had no footpath whatsoever, and that’s why the local councillors insisted that this stretch be the first piece of the Sutton to the Malahide cycleway because it

was very important piece of infrastructure that was missing.”Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly said: “I am delighted to be here for the official opening of the Portmarnock to Baldoyle greenway. We will be going to consultation for the next part of this greenway, linking from here through Portmarnock village into Malahide and that will complete the link from Baldoyle to Malahide.”

Malahide Sea Scouts working hard during Covid

By Tara Eason Scouting in Covid is hard but still fun. My name is Tara Eason and this what my brothers and I have done during the Covid crisis: Most packs are doing online meetings. Some every week and some every fortnight. These meetings are done on Zoom and may include badge work, a quiz, a scavenger hunt, jokes, riddles and many other things like that. Sometimes people do presentations of their work. This works by the presenter sharing their screen on Zoom. As part of their meetings Amikokenda Beavers are going back to basics during Covid.The activities are Build a fort, Animal friends,Safety,Identify trees,Cooking and Survival.If you do all these activities you get a badge. To build a fort we did a virtual camp. This is done by every scout setting up a den or a tent and sleeping in it for the night in their own garden or house. They also undertake activities like a Kahoot quiz or a scavenger hunt via Zoom.They have to have a lot of thought put into them. For Animal Friends we could do a project on anything to do with animals. For safety because we are sea scouts we did water safety so we had to read a document and do the fun spot the differences and then we did a kahoot quiz on water safety.The rest is yet to come. Ceadaoin Cubs have undertaken airskills for that they had to make a kite, take a video of it flying and send it to someone I donâ€™t know who and then they had to do some history on the Wright brothers, the people who invented airplanes.Some of the older scouts are doing some boat maintenance so the boats are ready for when we come back. Because they have to do it in small groups to maintain social distancing thereâ€™s more boat to cover. They scrape off the barnacles on the bottom, they anti foul the outside which is putting on really strong paint and they paint normally as well. They also clean the boats for the season ahead.. Malahide Allotment holders are disappointed that the climax of the Bord Bia Bloom 2020 could not go ahead as planned. However the Bord Bia Bloom At Home initiative has given us a platform to show our best side out and the Epilepsy Care Foundation entry for the Bord Bia Bloom at Home has attracted positive comments as easy as flowers attract bees.To celebrate the community here in Malahide Allotments and in recognition of the wonderful support the allotment community has graciously offered up in support, a stroll around the allotment lets you capture some of the wonderful characters

and excellent holdings that help make up the thriving community here on the Dublin Road. Ying and yang - it’s an oasis of calm, it’s a hive of activity. It’s a place of rest, it’s a place of work, it’s the changing of the seasons, it’s the cycle of life - but without the people who make up the community, without the bonds of friendship and common purpose, it could as easily wither on the vine. That scenario is far from happening and the inspiration, design and creation of the Bord Bia Bloom At Home Garden has given everyone a lift during these challenging times and it’s delivered a genuine ‘Wow Factor’ for so many of you

who have taken hope and inspiration. It’s been a huge success for us all and helped strengthen and deepen all those roots of friendship. We all DIG IT! Your neighbours are your friends. They are people who look out for you, who offer you support and advice. You might need to borrow you might need a helping hand, it could be favour or information on how best to grow, how to deal with a problem or simply someone to chat to.In essence the allotment is about the people who through their hard work and creativity have helped shape the fabulous eclectic environment that is Malahide Allotments.

The mansion of Mountshannon, about 5 miles from Scariff in Co. Clare, was burnt in 1920 and the estate was subsequently purchased and divided by the Land Commission. Mountshannon House (presumably a smaller house on the estate) was purchased by Lady Isabel Talbot’s family, the Blakes, in 1930 and in 1940 by Lord Talbot as a summer house. The Talbots kept a boat there and liked to fish on Lough Derg. They travelled up and down to Clare frequently. They kept several fairly large cars and two of the castle staff acted as chauffeurs. It appears Lord James Talbot was a very quiet man but his wife, Lady Joyce, was quite the opposite and more or less ran the estate. She did not treat her drivers very well in the course of these journeys and did not encourage any familiarity. After James died in 1948 Mountshannon became the property of his widow and she retired there for about three years. In 1955 she retired to London and subsequently remarried. The Mountshannon house she presented to An Oige with much of its furniture, for use as a youth hostel. The opening ceremony of this ‘wonder hostel’ was performed by the donor herself in April 1956. The land and a residence she gave to her faithful employee, Mr. Hugh Howe. The house was completely renovated in 1970 and it was recognized as the best equipped and most comfortable hostel in the country. An Oige sold the hostel to private interests in about 1988.

Tributes paid to former Mayor Mags Murray It is with deep regret that we learned of the recent death of the former Mayor of Fingal, Margaret (Mags) Murray (née O’Keeffe) (Clonsilla, Dublin 15 and formerly of Cregane, Charlevile, Co. Cork .Mags passed away peacefully on June 13th 2020 in the loving care of the staff at St. Francis Hospice, Blanchardstown. She was the beloved wife of Gary and dear mother of Niall, Aoife and Amy and is sadly missed by her loving husband, son, daughters, grandson Alex, father Connie, brother Neilus, sisters Ita and Noreen, Niall’s partner Natalie, Amy’s partner Bruno, nephews, nieces, relatives and a large circle of friends. Due to Government advice regarding public gatherings, a private family funeral took place in St Mochtas Church Porterstown Road Clonsilla , Dublint on Tuesday 16th. June with many sympathisers watching the service on webcam. In keeping with her caring nature Mags family requested that there should be family flowers only, with donations, if desired, to St. Francis Hospice, Blanchardstown. The current Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien led the tributes to his former colleague Mags, saying “I am greatly saddened to hear of the untimely passing of my former colleague and party member Mags Murray. She was an outstanding public representative who worked tirelessly on behalf of her constituents. Mags was a wonderful Ambassador for the County during her term as Mayor. She made an enormous contribution during her time as an elected representative and she will be greatly missed. Mags had a deep love of her community and a great deal of respect for local government. She was a proud Corkonian and an accomplished sportsperson, holding All Ireland medals for Camogie and Gaelic football. On behalf of myself, my fellow Councillors, party members and Fingal County Council, I would like to express my sincere condolences to Mags’ family, relatives and friends at this difficult time.” Fingal Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly said: “Mags was a deeply committed public representative who served her constituents in the Castleknock area with dedication and commitment during her time on Fingal County Council. She was unwavering in her dedication to serve the people she represented, and she made a significant and telling contribution to the lives of many.” Mags was first elected as a Fingal County Councillor in the Castleknock Local Electoral Area at the 2004 elections as a member of the Progressive Democrats. She was subsequently an unsuccessful candidate for the party in the 2007 General election in the Dublin West constituency. As the Progressive Democrats became defunct she joined Fianna Fáil in February 2008. In June 2014 Mags was elected Mayor of Fingal County Council due to the support of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Labour and a number of Independents.. She served until 2015 and in 2015 she hosted the Annual Mayor’s Conference. She was also the Chairperson of LAMA, the Local Authority Members Association.during her term on the Council. She lost her seat in the 2019 local elections.A digital book of condolences was opened following the death of the long-standing former Mayor and Councillor who gave so much to this community and who will be sorely missed but long remembered by those who knew her.

New Street to be transformed into a pedestrian zone Malahide is set to become the first area in Fingal to see a new pedestrian zone introduced in the centre of the village which will bring an open air, European-style feel to the heart of the village.New Street, which is home to lots of shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafés and bars, is set to be transformed into a pedestrian-friendly area during the 10-week pilot initiative.Walk Bike Fingal is an initiative being rolled out across the county and which seeks to encourage and facilitate social distancing for citizens going about their daily business.The contractor

has been appointed and work will commence on Monday and will allow retailers, café and restaurant owners expand their business onto the street, giving a European-style feel on the street. Additional parking is being provided at the nearby Bridgefield Car Park at the entrance to Malahide Demesne. Free parking will now be available at this location for a twohour period. The Council has also installed a number of Age Friendly parking spots in the town centre.During the Covid-19 pandemic there has been a significant drop in traffic, combined with a resurgence in walking and cycling across Fingal, and this new area will allow pedestrians move safely and freely while going about their day-to-day business.Fingal

County Council has met with stakeholders in the village and the plan has been backed by Malahide Chamber of Commerce, Malahide Community Forum and Malahide Tidy Towns. Councillors on the Howth-Malahide Area Committee also approved the pilot initiative following a briefing from Council officials. Next week, Fingal County Council launched its Street Furniture Initiative 2020 to facilitate the temporary placement of chairs and tables on footpaths to allow for outdoor dining. Niamh’s Luscious Nutella Cheesecake Although most of my recipes take more of a healthy approach, it is important to understand thattreats can be part of a healthy diet, just once they don’t become too often! I had a lot of chocolatey fun making this recipe with my niece and nephews as a treat! Quite simple but involves biscuit bashing, melting, stirring, mixing, spooning, patience and sticky chocolatey fingers and faces! I hope you enjoy as much as we did making it!

Ingredients: • • • • 16

300g dark chocolate digestive biscuits 120g butter 250g mascarpone 400g nutella

You can use a greased/non-stick springform based tin or simply a plate.

Method: 1.Place the biscuits in a strong bag that can be tied and can withstand the force of a rolling pin!(I use an empty breakfast cereal bag). Bash the biscuits using a rolling pin or other utensils until they form fine crumbs.Alternatively you could blitz the biscuits in a food processor/ blender. 2.Melt the butter in a saucepan. Take off the heat and stir in the biscuit crumbs until well mixed. 3.Tip the biscuit mixture into the tin and press down firmly with the back of a spoon to make a smooth and even surface.

Place in the fridge to chill while making the filling. 4.Place the nutella and mascarpone in a mixing bowl and combine well together. It helps if the nutella has been heated gently beforehand. 5. Spoon the nutella/mascarpone mixture on top of the biscuit base and place back in the fridge to chill for a 2-3hours or overnight. 6. Eat as it is or decorate as you like! Following on from the hugely disappointing decision to have to cancel their 2020 voyages, Sail Training Ireland are delighted to announce the launch of their 2021 Voyage Calendar. Next year will see some new and exciting projects happening alongside our usual local bursary scheme voyages.Most of the charity’s voyages have generous bursaries available to reduce the cost to those who may not be in a position to avail of the opportunity because of their circumstances.
