The Band or Pleasure Gardens on the Mall (Part one)

In an agreement for a lease dated 1844 between Richard Wogan (Lord) Talbot, his brother James and the latterâ€™s son, also James and heir to Richard on the one part and James Fagan of Bridgefoot Street, Dublin, timber merchant, on the other part, the Talbots agreed to lease to Fagan the land stretching from the lately built hotel almost to the Diamond at a yearly rent of twenty-five pounds ten shillings per Irish acre. The Talbots agreed to build, at their expense, a road from the fountain at the Diamond to the hotel, enclose part of the area with railings, plant trees and shrubs therein and lay it out as pleasure gardens. The Talbots were to get possession of the ground on which the Coast Guard had a boat house and watch house but they were 4

to build others in lieu thereof with apartments for two families. James Fagan was to be at liberty to build houses on portion of the lands but he had first to submit the plans for approval by Lord Talbot. The houses were to have the free use of the main sewer but Fagan was to be recompensed by Talbot for any extra expense if the sewer needed to be enlarged as a consequence. The occupants of the houses were to have free use of the pleasure gardens as were all persons frequenting the hotel. Other residents of Malahide could apply for a key to use the gardens at a fee of one pound per house or family per year.

Malahide Utd Girls for Manchester Competition This is huge news for the Swords based club. Malahide Utd Girls U14A Team are travelling to Manchester in April 2020 to compete in the Manchester Cup. This is the first team to travel outside the country to represent the Girls section of Malahide United. The girls gave been and will continue to fundraise for the trip with lots more fundraising needed in the coming months. If you would like to sponsor the team for the trip please send a private mail to the Malahide United facebook page and the Club will get back to you with details. It’s always nice to make the effort for someone who means a lot to you for Valentine’s, by cooking or baking for them.Or perhaps with lent coming up, one last indulgence might be in mind. This is a decadent and rich dessert. Quite simple to make and uses minimal ingredients. I like it with a dollop of vanilla yogurt and grated chocolate as in the picture. Ingredients: • • •

200g dates soaked in 4 tablespoons hot water overnight 200g ground almonds 100g dark chocolate (at least 70%

cocoa) 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 50g chopped hazelnuts (optional for a crunch!) Method:

1.Preheat a fan oven to 180’c. 2.Blitz the dates and any remaining liquid in a food processor/blender. 3.Melt the dark chocolate carefully in a saucepan over a gentle heat and stir. Once it is all melted, remove from the heat and stir in the blitzed up dates. 4.Mix in half of the ground almonds and

2 eggs. Then add the rest of the ground almonds, the final egg and vanilla extract and combine well together. 5.Pour the mixture into a nonstick or pre-lined with parchment paper baking pan and bake in the oven at 180’c for 20 minutes. Fingal County Council named “Local Authority of the Year”

Fingal County Council has been named Local Authority of the Year at the InBusiness Recognition Awards 2019.The award was accepted by Deputy Mayor of Fingal Cllr Tom Kitt at the awards ceremony held in the Westbury Hotel in Dublin. Cllr Kitt said: “I am delighted to accept the InBusiness Award for Best County Council. A key part of our mission statement is to make Fingal the best place in Ireland to do business in and winning this award for the second successive year indicates that the work we are doing on the ground is having a positive effect on the business community.” Cllr Kitt added: “There is a growing recognition amongst all stakeholders of the

importance of local authorities and our ability to get things done. We are the closest government agency to the citizen, and business, and are therefore best placed to deliver services directly to them.”Fingal County Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly said: “It is a great honour to receive this accolade in recognition of our efforts to improve the quality of services we deliver to all our stakeholders. Part of our vision for Fingal is to make it a good place to do business in, so it is particularly pleasing to be recognised for our efforts in this area.”

Fingal County Council were delighted to take part in Ireland’s most exciting festival of science and technology recently.The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, now in its 56th year, was a fun-filled spectacle of creativity and inspiration, offering something for people of all ages.Fingal County Council showcased innovative digital initiatives that look to improve the way we live and work in Fingal – from using drones to prevent illegal dumping, rolling out smart street furniture that can charge your phone and give you free Wi-Fi and developing 8

interactive maker spaces to enhance creativity and innovation.The Fingal County Council stand was in the World of Science and Technology exhibition hall. At the stand, attendees could create some wearable technology, play with robotics, learn about the many digital services from Fingal Libraries, charge their devices at the Fingal smart bench and take part in a 3D virtual reality experience of the City. The Digital Fingal team, Fingal Libraries, Smart Dublin and Dublin Maker were all on hand to showcase Fingal’s Digital projects

and services and to answer any questions from attendees.At the heart of the Exhibition there were 1,100 students representing 244 schools across the island of Ireland who competed for the coveted title of BT Young Scientist & Technologist(s) of the Year 2020. Last year Adam Kelly, a student from Skerries Community College was awarded the overall prize for his project entitled “Optimizing the Simulation of General Quantum Circuits”, which explored efficient ways to mathematically model quantum computers.
