Church of St Sylvester, Malahide (Part 2) - Malahide Historical Society

The Times of London carried a report

of a major storm that struck Malahide

on 27 December, 1852 stating that:Two

large pinnacles of the Catholic church (a new ediface) were torn away and thrown to the ground. Almost every house in

this comparatively sheltered village has

suffered more or less from the hurricane. Windows were blown in and roofs and

chimneys carried away in every direction. . The pinnacles referred to are probably

those depicted over the side doors in the

Budgeting Smarter - How to have more of your money left over By Dave Kavanagh Every choice you make, every activity you do, every change you contemplate, are in some way connected to your finances. You have income. You have expenditure. The aim is that the first one is always greater than the second, that leaves you with “disposable income”.For most people, the income side is relatively constant. So how can you improve the amount you have left over? On the spending side. The first thing to realise is that most people don’t accurately know the full details of their expenditure. They’ll know some of the main and regular ones, but not all. You can test this by trying to list everything that you spent last month, then look at what you actually spent. They will rarely match. (Think of the last time you took €50 out of an ATM to buy something for €10, for example, what did the other €40 go on?) So the first step is to undertake a strict monitoring of spending for a month. Every cent spent on anything, whether cash, cards or direct debit. Log it every evening. After a month, you’ll have something to work with. The first thing you will usually no-tice is that you spent money on things that you really did not need to (and often wish you hadn’t!) This can help moving forward with reducing spending. But what else can you do? A few tips to cut spending further and hence, improve how much you have left over each

month:Carefully study 3 months’ bank statements. Make sure that you can account for every single transaction. On a regular basis, I encounter people who have been paying for things that they should not be. Direct debits they forgot to cancel. Subscriptions no longer relevant. Doubling up on things like house insurance (happens a lot!). Make a detailed list for grocery shopping (and don’t shop while hungry). This leads to only buying what you actually need, a lower bill at the till and less throwing out of food gone off. Also, check your receipt after going through the till. “Acci-dental” over-charging is far more prevalent than you may realise. (Since I began keeping record, one store has overcharged me 65 times!) Compare before you shop for larger items. Just because one store has a fridge you want reduced from €950 to €850 in their “Sale”, does not mean another store nearby that does not cur-rently have a sale on, is not selling the same one for €799. A little research can produce big savings. Com-pare utility providers. Whether it’s electricity, gas, broadband, mobile phone service or similar, there can be substantial savings to be had by switching to better deals. Check when car/house insurance renewals ar-rive. Don’t automatically accept a renewal premium without checking around. A few phone calls could save you hundreds of euro.Review premiums on life cover/mortgage protection/serious illness cover. Especial-ly if you arranged it directly with a bank or insurance

company that could only quote you for their products. Massive savings can be made doing this, as you pay for them over such a long period.In over 20 years of helping people with their finances, I have never seen anyone NOT make savings by doing the above. Standard Puppy Food vs Large Breed Puppy Food?

Is there really a difference???!!!........ simply put… YES…We are often asked “What are the differences between a standard puppy food and a large breed puppy food apart from the kibble size?”Due to their adult size, large breed puppies have a different growth curve to smaller breeds and therefore have different nutritional requirements to support optimal growth and development. If large breed puppies grow too rapidly, this can cause serious and debilitating issues with bones, joints and muscles and therefore pet foods that have been formulated specifically for large breed puppies to help and support controlled growth and do

not promote rapid growth.Although genetic factors are one of the largest unavoidable contributors to these issues, appropriate nutrition during puppy hood can help decrease the chance of such conditions developing in predisposed breeds. We stock many Large Breed Puppy recipes in store and most have been formulated with a lower crude protein and crude fat content compared with standard puppy recipies. This reduced energy density helps to optimise the rate of growth. A lot of recipies have also been formulated with a balanced level of calcium and phosphorus based on FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines, as diets with excess levels can lead to

excess absorption and development of skeletal malformations.Feeding practice is also a very important factor to take into condersation, we would recommended feeding puppies 4 small meals per day up until 12 weeks of age, then graduating down to 3 times per day from 12 weeks up until 6 months, at which stage you can then drop them down to twice a day. Making sure you are following the suggested daily feeding amounts on the feeding guide to maintain a lean body condition. Over feeding can lead to obesity which puts extra strain on the bones and joints and can lead to other serious health issues. Selecting a large breed puppy recipe

Micháel Gaffney’s Legacy to The People of Malahide

On June 25th 2019, a wonderful evening was held in Saint Benedict’s Malahide to commemorate Micháel Gaffney and his generous donation to the community. Mr Gaffney volunteered with the Saint Sylvester’s conference of the Saint Vincent de Paul throughout his life. Mr Gaffney made a generous donation in his will that contributed towards the construction of eight new housing units for older people in Saint Benedicts. Friends of Mr Gaffney, along with residents of Saint Benedict’s and other members of the SVP joined together to celebrate his life and to recognise the extraordinary gift that he made. Mr Gaffney will always be remembered in Saint Benedicts. A plaque has been erected on the new housing units to recognise his contribution.

Have you seen Japanese Knotweed in your area?

Fingal County Council is seeking the public’s assistance in curbing the spread of Japanese knotweed. The local authority is asking the public to record all sightings of Japanese knotweed on public and private property in order to find any remaining stands that have not been recorded so far. Japanese Knotweed was first introduced to Ireland as a garden plant from Japan in the 19th century. It escaped from gardens and has now spread across Ireland. This invasive species can seriously undermine the structural integrity of roads and buildings.In Fingal, the plant can be found throughout the 8

county but is particularly abundant in Balbriggan. Fingal County Council is keen to eradicate this invasive species. 184 locations have been identified so far and a treatment program got underway in 2018 with the aim to eradicate the Japanese knotweed from the county.All sightings of Japanese Knotweed in Fingal can be submitted to the County Council by email to biodiversity@ fingal.ie. The Council is asking the public to include a map or a precise location of the stand and ideally include a picture of the plant to confirm if it is Japanese Knotweed. Malahide Lions / Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town awards Malahide Lions, on behalf of Malahide Village has applied for the 2019 Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town Awards and we are delighted to report that we have been shortlisted. This Bank of Ireland initiative recognises and rewards the spirit of enterprise which brings business and community groups together to create economically sustainable communities. The prize fund is almost €200,000 which will be shared by 41 towns, including the overall national winner and the winner of the ‘rising star’ category. There are 79 applicants this year and the competition is open to small, medium and large towns as well as city villages/urban areas. The Judges visited Malahide on Tuesday 3rd September. With the help of public, community business and education leaders Malahide Lions showcased our wonderful village. Our presentation took place in the Grand Hotel before an invited audience of approx. 35 people. The 3 judges then asked many insightful, probing questions on business, investment, technology, sustainability, education and community co-operation. The judges and guests were then brought on a tour of the village on TOOTS MALAHIDE ROAD TRAIN. We visited Malahide Castle where Paddy Ryan of Malahide Historical Society gave a brilliant commentary. The Mayor of Fingal, Cll. Eoghan O’Brien arranged a private visit to The Casino where the Fry Model Railway will be exhibited on completion of all necessary works that are now well advanced. The Bank of Ireland will announce the 2019 winners at a gala awards ceremony in Kilkenny on the 5th December.

Malahide Lion Donal Lehane participated in The Paris2Nice Charity Cycle in aid of Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice and was supported by the Malahide Lions Club. Paris2Nice is a unique and exceptional noncompetitive charity cycle that raises much needed funds for charities throughout Ireland. Totalling just over 700km in 6 days, the participants ranged in age, fitness levels and cycling experience. This year’s event took place from the 14th– 19th September 2019, starting off in the beautiful city of Paris and finishing on the iconic Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Donal with 4 of his Deloitte work colleagues have to date raised close to €23,000 for Laura Lynn. Relatively new to cycling Donal planned to complete the Mont Ventoux mountain climb (over 1,900 metres) as part of the charity cycle and looks forward to this amazing challenge. 10

Especially if we are out venturing, trick or treating or celebrating our Celtic festival ‘Oíche Shamhna’.Here’s a few fun ‘fang-tastic’ ideas to make sure we are getting our fill of nutrition and not just filling with treats!

Cheeky Cheesestring Broomsticks! and peel back the cheese 1.Cut a cheese string in half strips at one end. three quarters of the way into into the opposite end. 2. Push a bread stick or pretzel

2 large sweet potatoes makes about 30 shapes of varying sizes! Preheat oven to 200’c. 1.First wash and peel the sweet potatoes. 2.Slice into circles. 3.To speed up cooking time, boil the sweet potato slices for 8 minutes. (The water from boiling could be used as stock for asoup/ casserole as it will contain some nutrients that leached out of the sweet potatoes!) 4.Drain and place the shapes on a baking tray. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of oil and add herbs/spices of your liking! (I like mine with Balsamic vinegar and black pepper!) 5.Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes at 200’c to get them nice and crispy!

1.Wash and dry the peppers. Then slice around the top of the pepper and lift this new ‘lid’ off. • 2.Scoop out the inside of the pepper. • 3.Using a sharp knife carve the face or whichever design you like into one side of the pepper. • 4.Fill the pepper with an already cooked wholesome meal, hummus or filling of your desire! • 5.You could also roast the peppers to make them softer to eat by placing them on a baking tray • with oil/baking sheet and place in the oven at 200’c. for 30-35 minutes.

Londis Malahide has been at the heart of the Malahide community for more than 50 years and John and his staff were delighted to lend their support to what was a fabulously successful fundraiser for the local community football team. The day’s celebrations featured three 30 minute segments with legends from Liverpool’s glorious past playing against the best of the local community, including current members of Malahide United’s adult teams.
