This talk explores how marriages were made in Ireland, from courtship, to reading the banns, negotiating the dowry, the marriage ceremony and consummation. If any step was omitted, it undermined the lawful basis of the marriage. What evidence survives, and what does it tell us about love and marriage in the past?

Why are Women so undervalued?

There is a tendency to place values on all kinds of things, from property to cars, from jewellery to smart phones. When it comes to protecting against the loss of these things, itâ€™s then a straightforward calculation. However, when it comes to valuing people and protecting against potential loss, there seems to be a large imbalance in how men and women are valued. In a series of recent interactive group talks, I set a task for the participants (who, as it happened, were about 75% women). I gave them a typical family scenario of a couple, John & Mary, with 2 children aged 2 and 4, with John in full time employment and Mary being a stay at home mum, not in paid employment. There were various other details but the task was to agree how much personal life cover they should both have (outside of their mortgage protection). Out of 9 different groups, all but one decided on Mary needing far less cover than John (on average, about 50% less). I then explained how to calculate the financial loss that would be suffered in the event of either of their deaths. Even though John had the only income, if Mary passed away, John would have to either give up work to care for the two young children or else pay for all of the minding that would be required, as well as possibly other tasks that Mary may have looked after. In short,

in this example (with children that young) the same level of life cover would be appropriate for both of them, as the financial loss that would be suffered in the event of either fatality would be very similar. Once a detailed explanation of how we arrived at these calculations was given, everybody completely agreed that this was the case but it certainly illustrated how in general, there was an under valuing of Maryâ€™s role and therefore an under valuing of the financial loss that would be suffered. This is also evident both in the levels of cover that we see that people have and also in the claim statistics that are published by the life companies each year. The number of life claims for women is far less that those of men (even allowing for the naturally higher proportion of males dying younger) and the amounts of the claims is also much lower for women on average. The same is the case for serious illness claims, far less and far lower for females. With many campaigns and much publicity around the imbalance of wages and opportunities between genders, it is worth considering how we value ourselves and how we also value the potential loss of ourselves. Take a few minutes and look at your own situation to see if youâ€™ve done anything similar.

The history of Robs Wall Park and its wonderful views

Malahide Historical Society The Robswall Park is one of the latest additions to Fingal County Council’s wonderful collection of public parks and playgrounds. It is accessible from several points between Malahide and Portmarnock and particularly from the walk running along the coast between Malahide and Portmarnock. The Coast Road was originally built in 1936 with stone from Feltrim Quarry. Prior to then just a rough track ran along the cliff top. Remnants of this old road still remain at the higher level in front of Hick’s Tower and Lambay Court and further along before reaching the Portmarnock Martello tower. This park of over 90 acres contains numerous trails criss crossing this hillside. The park summit, known as Paddy’s Hill rises to a height of 38

metres. It is so named because local tradition has it that St. Patrick visited. Here, about 8000 years ago, lived Malahide’s first hunter-gatherers. An archaeological dig ws organised in 1983 which proved that it was an early habitation site. From uncovered refuse pits or kitchen middens it was found that the earliest Malahidians ate very well, with duck and oysters regularly on the menu.The park allows you to enjoy an elevated site, with powerful and commanding views over the Estuary and out towards Lambay Island, as far as Irelands Eye and Howth. The long-horned shaggy Highland cattle that graze beside the cycle track near the Malahide United grounds are a much admired attraction.

Planning for Back to School and staggering the cost

We may be slap bang in the middle of the summer but parents know, it’s time to start planning for Back to school! Between uniforms, bags, shoes, coats and all the other expenses, if you start buying now, you can stagger the cost (and stress!) First off uniforms. Despite the governments repeated promises to do away with crested uniforms, they are still a requirement at many schools and are very costly. A jumper can be €30-40, a jacket €60 etc. We found a way to do this cheaper! Buy uniform items like jumpers, cardigans, tracksuits from Dunnes Stores, Tesco, Lidl, M&S and have the crest sewn or embroidered on. Bestwear in Drogheda provides this service, or you could ask the school for the crest and sew it on yourself. Shoes can be expensive, especially for teenagers. Kildare Village is good for bargains brands. Lifestyle Sports has a range of low-cost trainers. We picked up some Nike black trainers for PE for only €35 there. Skechers has a shoe for boys

which doubles as a trainer and shoe and saves parents from buying 2 pairs of shoes. Korky’s have a shoe for girls that is almost identical to the ‘branded’ shoe some schools insist on and its half the price so that’s worth a look. For books, check out offers, like Easons 10% off. They also have a drop off/pick up s service. Drop in your school list, come back after a few hours to have it bagged and ready to go! Schoolbooks.ie is great for Gaelscoil books, they have a dedicated section on their site for these. Ipads are becoming more and more popular for schools now – our own teens both have them – and at €500 a pop, parents need to make sure that they have a schoolbag to protect the ipad. Totto brand in Bag City Ilac SC has a compartment to protect technology. These bags are very sturdy, we bought one for our son last year and it’s in such good condition, we do not need to buy him a bag this year. For smaller kids, Smiggle, in Pavilions, has ‘Bag bundles’ which are good value. They are colourful,

scented and brilliant for kids; making BTS shopping fun!Make sure to label everything your child wears and brings to school. Stuckonyou.eu has a range of labels for books, shoes, uniforms, lumchboxes to make sure if your child does leave something behind, it can be returned to them. Labelling clothes and school items is much cheaper than replacing them. Regatta has good sales and offers on kids wear like raincoats, water bottles and fleeces. Flying Tiger has funky yet practical stationery and is very well priced.The Works is excellent for art supplies – you can save a lot by buying there, it’s very good for college students. If you are struggling with back to school costs, see if you can apply for the BSCFA at welfare.ie – this is helpful to parents. Also, keep an eye out for offers and competitions (there are lots of school related competitions on mams.ie for lunchboxes, schoolbags etc). Enjoy the rest of the holidays!

How a Guide Dog changed Breege O Neill’s life This is the story of guide dog owner Breege O’Neill Guide and how a Guide Dog charged her life. Dog Owner Breege and her husband Tom, also a Guide Dog Owner, are a well-known and a much-respected couple in the Balbriggan area of Co. Dublin. Here Breege relates in her own words how owning a Guide dog has impacted on her life. “I got my first Guide Dog in the early 90’s after dealing with low vision for most of my life.By this time, I was married to Tom who is blind and also had a Guide Dog. We had 2 children and I was ready to go back to work but would not have been able to do so without Gypsy, who was my first Guide Dog. The difference having a Guide Dog made to my life was immediate. I had greater independence and freedom. Having Gypsy gave me the confidence to return to work.Gypsy was a black lab and retired to a good friend Margaret Whitney who gave her a great retirement. My second dog was Abby who, when she retired, went to another friend Vivi Gorman where she also had a great retirement.Between my third dog, who was called Unice, and now I had a 2-and-a-half-year break; I was diagnosed with cancer and was on treatment and I knew I would not be able to use Unice who by this time was 11 and was due for retirement. She went to a great family who were very good friends of mine. Gillian, Donal and their lovely little boy Bryan looked after Unice until she passed away in October 2018. She had a great retirement with the Fitzpatrick family. Strangely, she passed away on the day that I first met Qeb, who is my current dog.Qeb is a lovely black Lab Retriever, he is a lively 2-year-old who is a great worker and is not fazed by anything andloves a good challenge.I really missed my independence for the 2 and a half years while I was sickand am delighted to be back in harness again; it is a great confidenceboost.I am looking forward to a long working life with Qeb.Understanding how a Guide Dog can transform the life of a person who has impaired vision, Tom and I co-founded the Balbriggan\ North County Dublin Branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind which actively fundraises.” On Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of September Irish Guide dogs for the blind Balbriggan\North County Dublin branch will be taking up their annual church gate collection all over North County Dublin.The collection will be taken up outside of the following churches on public ground: Balbriggan, St Georges Balbriggan, Skerries, Balscadden, Skerries C.O.I., Rush, Lusk, Garristown, Ballamadun, Oldtown, Rolestown, Naul, Damastown and Ballyboughal.

Fingal Co Co to carry out substantial investment in regional roads

Fingal County Council plans to carry out a multi-million euro investment in regional roads across Fingal, which will include the provision of extensive cycling infrastructure as part of the upgrade works.An extensive examination of the regional road network was carried out across the County, and has prompted a two-phase approach to improving the network for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.Work is set to begin shortly on the first project under this programme on carriageway works and lining for cycle facilities from Blake’s Cross to Minister’s Road on the R132 in Lusk.A further upgrade from Hedgestown to the Applegreen Service Station, which will also improve the cycling network, has also been identified under phase one and will commence later this year. Other projects identified in phase one include investment in carriageway works and lining for cycle facilities on the R135 North Road, as well as the provision of structural upgrade drainage works on the R127 Blake’s Cross to Lusk Road and upgrading the carriageway and off-road cycle tracks on the Ballycoolin Road. In terms of phase two, further improvements of the R132 Swords to Balbriggan road, including upgrades of the Swords by-pass as well as the construction of a new junction at Blake’s Cross have also been identified.Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien said: “This is a substantial investment by Fingal County Council in the road network across the county, which will see significant improvements not only for motorists but for cyclists and pedestrians too. I am particularly pleased to see that the improvement works will include extensive upgrades of the cycle network.”

Malahide Tidy Towns are hugely thankful to all who helped getting our new boats in situ. They are now in various locations throughout the village and are looking very smart indeed. Firstly to Billy Hatch, whose family are long associated with the sea farers of Malahide for the donation of the boats and to Alan Devine, Inspector of Operations, Fingal County Council, who was enormously helpful in helping us get the boats out of the water and up to the scouts. give these boats a new lease of life.An enormous thanks must go to Malahide Sea Scouts who are celebrating 100 years of scouting in Malahide this year. The beaver scouts aged 6 – 9 worked on the restoration as part of their community badge, or Chief Scout Award. The Amikokenda and TSB beavers were the ones that conducted all of this hard work for which we are immensely grateful. Following a lot of elbow grease! Hammering, refilling, priming and painting the scouts handed over the refurbished boats to Malahide Tidy TownsAgain, Fingal County Council stepped

in to help us move ‘Ben’ to his new home in Yellow Walls. Once ‘Ben’ was planted up, the scouts joined Anthony Lavin former Mayor of Fingal and Pat McNamara, Chairman, Malahide Tidy Towns along with Scout Leaders and other hardworking members of Tidy Towns to welcome the new boat where he sits proudly in the sunshine.It truly takes a super community effort to help keep Malahide looking beautiful and we think with this effort alone it shows how many are involved in one project to help Malahide Tidy Towns thrive for success. Niamh’s Mouthwatering Beef and Black Bean Sauce Serves 1

Ingredients

50g sliced onions 200g sliced beef 120 chopped mixed peppers 1 cup of whole grain rice 40g sliced mushrooms 40g black bean sauce

To make homemade black bean sauce: • • • • • • •

200g black beans 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 2 shallots 2 cloves garlic 5cm fresh root ginger 1 tablespoon chilli pepper flakes 1 & 1/2 teaspoons cornflour dissolved in 1 tablespoon water

Method to make sauce: 1.Mix the beans, shallots, chilli pepper flakes and rice wine vinegar together. Mash the beans well. Set aside. 2. Sauté the garlic and ginger in a small amount of oil on a pan until soft and flavours infuse. Add the mixture from the previous step. 3.Bring the mixture to the boil then simmer for 10-15minutes. To thicken the sauce, stir in the cornflour mixture. Simmer until thickened.

To cook the rice: Bring 1.5 cups of water to boil before adding a cup of rice and let it simmer before all the water has dissolved. Then it is ready to serve.

To cook the rest of the ingredients: 1.Add 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil into a nonstick pan (preferably). Gently cook stripped beef just to brown it then remove from pan. 2.Add vegetables to pan and lightly cook before adding black bean sauce and beef then cook till sauce begins to bubble and meat is cooked thoroughly. 3.Serve with cooked rice. Councils take a look at the impact of the Arts

A new report developed by Fingal Arts Office, along with three other arts offices, outlines the value and impact of local authority arts programmes and advises on what the sector can achieve and the measures required to support further success. The particular focus of the Fingal element of the study was on what can be achieved in the area of young people and the arts. The report was launched this week by Jackie Maguire, Chair of the County and City Management Association (CCMA) and Chief Executive of Meath County Council at an event attended by Rory O’Byrne Fingal Arts Officer and AnnMarie Farrelly, Interim Chief Executive Fingal County Council. Indecon Consulting compiled the report, developed as part of the Arts Council funded ‘Invitation to Collaboration’ programme by the arts offices of Fingal, Kildare, Leitrim and Limerick local authorities.Since the first Arts Office was established in 1985, local authorities have grown to become the most significant network of
