County Council’s Chief Executive appointed as HSE Director General The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, has been appointed as the new Director General of the Health Service Executive. He will leave his position on May 13 after the final monthly meeting of the current Council. Announcing his departure to councillors and staff today, Mr Reid said: “It is both an honour and a privilege to have been appointed to such an important role that impacts on the lives of everyone in the state. However, it will certainly be with a heavy heart that I will leave Fingal County Council. I can say for sure that being in the role as Chief Executive of Fingal, for the past five years, has been the best and most fulfilling job that I have had in my career to date.I have had the opportunity to make an impact on the quality of life of all of the people, business and communities of Fingal that we serve.We have achieved a lot over the last five years. I was delighted when I came in 2014 to find a body of councillors who were committed to the Council’s vision of making Fingal the place of choice in Ireland to live, work, visit and do business. Over the past five years there was always a willingness to find the best solution for the people of Fingal.The quality, commitment and calibre of staff in Fingal made my job extremely rewarding. Fingal County Council is highly respected across a whole range of stakeholders for being a highly innovative and “can do” council. He added, “I have been truly honoured to hold this position and I hope that I too have played my part, along with the elected members and our excellent staff, in making this such a great county.” Mr Reid will lead the Executive into the Council meetings in April and May before a new Council is elected on May 24. An interim Chief Executive will be appointed shortly to lead the Council while the Public Appointments Service recruit Mr Reid’s successor.

Malahide Historical- The Leinster and Ulster Railway (part 1)

In I825, in the same year as the opening of the first railway in England, an Irish company known as the “ Leinster and Ulster Rail Company” was promoted for the establishing of a railway between Dublin and Belfast, a proposal that failed to materialise. In 1835, Thomas Brodigan, a large landowner, of Pilltown House near Drogheda, published a pamphlet suggesting the linking of Dublin and Drogheda by a railway. He argued the advantages of such a scheme such as faster transport of passengers and goods, and for landowners along the route, the value of their land would increase threefold. A meeting was called in Dublin under the chairmanship of Mr. George Alexander Hamilton of Balbriggan, another substantial landowner along the suggested route for the railway. There was much argument as to whether the line should run more directly along the coast or follow an inland route through Navan. The latter was supported by Navan businessmen and landowners along that route who were also members of the

House of Lords. A parliamentary committee under the chairmanship of Daniel O’Connell was set up to examine the claims of both sides and eventually decided in favour of the coastal route. The necessary parliamentary bill then had to be got past the House of Lords. After much argument the coastal route promoters agreed to pay the costs of the other side and the bill was passed into law in August 1836. Lord Talbot was an early subscriber with an investment of £5,000 which entitled him to 50 shares. He also granted wayleaves through his lands at little cost as he saw the railway as means of relieving locals of the burden of poor toll roads. The rails were to be routed along the coast through Clontarf and Dollymount but Vernon of Clontarf castle and Guinness of St. Anne’s objected and the present more direct route was substituted. However, this involved substantial embankments and cuttings. Matters progressed slowly, though at a general meeting of the proprietors of the company in 1838 Mr. Brodigan expressed himself very satisfied. It was envisaged that,

initially, all goods trains would be horse drawn and at times when no steam trains were operating two horse trains would run to and from Malahide. To be continued in next issue.

On May 8th Malahide Historical Society will mark the175th anniversary of opening of the railway when a ceremonial train

left Amiens Street for Drogheda by hosting a lecture by widely published railway historian Oliver Doyle entitled ‘The Railway and Malahide’. The talk will start at 8 pm in the Presbyterian Church hall on Dublin Road Malahide. Entrance is €4 and all are most welcome.

Guide Dogs -We urgently need your help! Recently a premises in our area closed down and they had a large collection dog in it. What the Banks don’t want you to know! By Dave Kavanagh Most people use banks for a variety of services and products for convenience. In many cases, people assume that their bank is giving them the most suitable products for the best value but is that really the case? Quite often, a bank is limited in the range of options it has to offer but won’t necessarily tell you this because they want you to buy their products and make them more profit. Some of the most common areas where we see this being the case, include mortgage protection, life & serious illness cover, home insurance, personal loans and current accounts. When people apply for mortgages (usually the biggest financial obligation you will probably have in your life) the associated products required can seem secondary in comparison and quite often, the bank arranges to put these other products in place for you. In many cases the bank is tied to just one company’s offering, for example with mortgage protection, so they are not in a position to offer you alternative mortgage protection that could be much cheaper. You are under no obligation to take out any such products with the bank that provides your mortgage. Even if you did so some years back, you can still compare today and if you can get mortgage protection that is sufficient to cover your remaining balance and term and it is cheaper than what you are paying, you are quite entitled to replace it. This is usually more noticeable with personal life or serious illness cover, as the premium will usually

be higher, leading to a larger saving. The same is often the case with home insurance where we see people who have their home insurance premium deducted with their mortgage payment so just leave it as it is, when in fact, they can be paying close to double what they could be insuring their home by shopping around each year. With competition in banking meaning that options constantly change, it is well worth researching alternatives to make sure you are getting the best value. A €20 per month saving on a mortgage protection plan with 20 years remaining, is €4,800 in total! People will often take the time to compare products in a supermarket to see if one option is a few cents cheaper than another but yet not take the time to compare things that are deducted by direct debit despite the potential of much larger savings. It really is worth taking a little time to make sure you are getting the best value for your hard-earned money. It’s far better in your pocket! Road Safety at Roadworks campaign launched David Storey, Director of Services, Operations Department said: “Improving safety at roadworks takes real collaboration across the roads industry, and I am delighted that these companies have come together to jointly support this campaign. It epitomises the spirit of co-operation that exists in our supply chain on this important issue as we continue our work to ensure that nobody comes to harm as a result of working for or on behalf of Fingal County Council.“ DRIVERS If you drive a vehicle, at some point you’ll drive through roadworks. Follow these safety tips: Adhere the speed limit on display,Follow the temporary road signage in place,Stay alert for the roadworkers and machinery.Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.Do not break the red light or ignore a flagman stop sign.

This has spurred local authorities from around Ireland to join forces to take action.

An Orange Cone Safety Zone Week campaign, which has its focus on the lack of awareness of some drivers that roadworks are a place of work for thousands of people and that all of us have a right to expect a safe working environment, is being launched by local authority road safety officers from around the country.

ROADWORKERS The following are key elements of temporary traffic control management in roadworks: Training-All persons working on roads should be trained on how to work safely near public traffic namely by completing the Health and Safety at Roadworks on Roads (1 Day) and/or Signing, Lighting & Guarding (3 day) course. Make yourself visible- All workers should always wear high-visibility clothing during roadworks. Traffic management-Suitable traffic management must be in place to safeguard workers and members of the public.Work areas- Must be clearly marked and must be protected with buffer or safety zones.

Malahide Credit Union 2019 - Our 50th anniversary year!

Malahide & District Credit Union opened for business on 17th September 1969 in what is now the Health Centre on New Street. In those days the credit union was run entirely by volunteers. Within one year we had 300 members and assets of £500. From the Health Centre we moved to the Parish Hall and then to our own location on Railway Avenue. We felt that we were Malahide’s best kept secret and in 2014 we decided to move to Main Street to improve and enhance the profile of our credit union. As a result our membership has grown from 5,000 ten years ago to almost 7,700 today. Speaking about the 50th Anniversary Vivienne Keavey, our manager, said that “it’s hard to believe how time has flown by but in September 2019 Malahide Credit Union will be 50 years old! Throughout those years the credit union has been an integral part of the community of Malahide and with your help, will continue to be for the next fifty years as well. Brilliant Baguette Bake Ingredients The below quantities makes 1 serving. Increase the quantities for more than 1 person.

• 2 pieces of a Baguette or other bread • 4 tablespoons tinned tomatoes • 2 cloves of garlic

• 1 handful fresh basil leaves • 8 strips of pepper

• 1/2 red onion, cut into rings • Handful of grated cheese 12

Method 1.Preheat the oven to 200’c. 2. Place the baguette slices into the oven at 180’c for 3-4minutes. 3.Meanwhile heat the chopped tomatoes and garlic on the hob. Stir in the basil. 4.Remove baguettes from the oven and spoon the tomato mixture onto the baguette slices. 5.Place 4 strips of red pepper and 2 red onion rings on top. 6.Put the prepared slices into the oven for 4minutes at 180’c then sprinkle the grated cheese on top and allow it to melt over

another 4minutes in the oven until crispy. Optional side salad to add vibrant colour! The salad in this picture contains spinach, red pepper,red onion and balsamic vinegar dressing. Syls girls star showing at croke park The U10 Syls girls had an amazing opportunity today when they were picked to represent the St Sylvester’s at an LGFA blitz in Croke Park. They were 1 of 64 teams from around the country who took part. The challenging weather didn’t dampen spirits as they all played brilliantly against opposition from Armagh, Carlow, Down, Meath and Offaly. They were great ambassadors for the club. Hopefully it’ll be the first of many trips to play on the hallowed turf !!! Well done girls!
