Malahide lourdes pilgrimage booking now

For the past thirty five years a pilgrimage from Malahide has gone to Lourdes to the Shrine of Our Lady. The organizing committee fundraise each year to help to bring elderly and sick people on this visit to Lourdes. Wheelchairs are provided and also volunteer helpers to push them. The group have their own priest with them, usually from one of the Religious Orders. Each

day they have their own Mass in one of the chapels or churches in Lourdes. They take part in the Blessing of the Sick ceremony every afternoon in the underground Basilica and the Torchlight Procession every evening, the baths and other organized events and the highlight is of course all the available time to spend at the Grotto.

The pilgrimage is very popular, not only with Malahide people but with people from surrounding areas and North County Dublin. All are welcome. This year the pilgrimage is from 19th to 23rd August. If you would like to join us please contact Jo 087 6163648

The story of Robbs Wall Castle continued from last issue The castle, minus a storey today, was renovated and modernised around the middle of the last century when the projecting window on the east side was added. The turret and garderobe or latrine can be seen in the accompanying illustration. The latter is the small structure set in an angle between two walls with a tiny window and an exit hole underneath. It is believed that up to 7,000 tower-houses may have been built around Ireland between the early 1400s and the 1600s. The square towers varied between three and ﬁve storeys in height. The first floor was stone vaulted to give a degree of ﬁre protection should an attacker breach the entrance door and try to burn the defenders out. A winding staircase give access to the first floor and another flight of stone steps leads to the third floor. Some, as in Robbs Wall, had arrow slits, battlements and / or projecting parapets but generally speaking they were not intended to offer strong resistance but rather to give the inhabiting family a degree of security. Many of the Fingal tower houses had a projecting turret in one corner, usually above the stairs. Being primarily dwellings they had fireplaces, decorated windows, particularly at the higher levels and medieval style toilets known as garderobes. Most would have had farm buildings, constructed of wood, attached or nearby and might have been surrounded by a bawn wall. In 1875, Mrs Mary Ryan, administratix of the late Mr. John Ryan, advertised for sale by auction the interest in a lease from Lord Talbot, with eleven years unexpired and a yearly rent of £480, of one hundred and eighty-six statute acres, a six-room dwelling and out offices including store houses. In 1887, the farm was again being advertised for sale. However, the Malahide Estate took over the running of the farm in 1890 and continued to do so until1945. The castle was used as a steward’s or farm manager’s house. With thanks to Malahide Historical Society.

Fingal Student is Young Scientist of the Year!

Fingal has celebrated the success of its students and schools in the 2019 BT Young Scientist competition, as Young Scientist of the Year Adam Kelly was recognised for his impressive achievement.Tributes were paid at the event on March 11 (Monday) in County Hall, Swords to his family, his teacher Ms Lennon, and his school, Skerries Community College, for supporting and aiding Adam’s winning efforts. Students, teachers and family in attendance from Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan, St. Joseph’s in Rush, Portmarnock Community School, Le Chéile Secondary School, and Coláiste Pobail Setanta were also praised and recognised.Adam’s win continues a tradition of victory for Fingal students in this competition. In 2016, Maria Louise Fufezan and Diana Bura claimed the prize for Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan. Adam’s project, entitled “Optimizing The Simulation Of General Quantum Circuits”, explores efficient ways to mathematically model quantum computers.Quantum computing uses subatomic particles to drive computer calculations and processes. It is a complex, emerging field with exciting technological and scientific applications, including the possibility of increased computing speed and power.Following Adam’s victory in the all-Ireland competition, he will go on to represent Ireland at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists

which will be held in Bulgaria this September. Speaking at the celebration, Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Anthony Lavin said: “It’s highly encouraging to see so many Fingal students and schools getting involved and active in science.“The discoveries made by Adam and the many other students who took part in the Young Scientist competition are already doing things that impact us all. From

national to local issues, from climate change to commerce, we need the ingenuity and curiosity that these Young Scientists have shown.” Fingal County Council has been active in promoting STEM to students and children, with Fingal Libraries hosting STEM Saturdays events in 2018 featuring coding, robots and engineering through LEGO.

What you should know about Serious Illness Cover By Dave Kavanagh If there is one aspect of protection that crops up time and time again, it’s Serious Illness Cover (a.k.a. Critical Illness Cover or Specified Illness Cover) but not always for the right reasons! Quite often, the topic comes up because someone has received unpleasant medical news and it prompts them to consider the “what if ” scenarios. Sadly, in many cases, it is too late at this point to be permitted to take out Serious Illness Cover. The usual medical underwriting that takes place when someone applies for cover is more stringent on Serious Illness Cover than it is for say, Life Cover. The reason is that you are far more likely to be diagnosed with one of the Specified illnesses during the term of a plan than you are to pass away.So what exactly is Serious Illness Cover and why is it so important? The cover will pay out a tax-free lump sum on diagnosis of a large number of Specified Illnesses. While the list is quite long, the vast majority of claims are for the “big 5”, Cancer, Heart Disease, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis and Loss of Independence. It is not dependent on your ability to work

or the severity of how you are affected. If it is one of the definitions covered, you are paid. The best time to conside. Serious Illness Cover? Is when you don’t think you need it! At the very least, get a free quote for cover from someone who can quote the premiums of a number of companies. It’s quick and easy and you can then make an informed decision for yourself. ‘Cult drinks’ - fingal’s enterprise award winners for 2019 A drinks business from Donabate is this year’s winner of the Fingal Enterprise Award for 2019. Organised by the network of Local Enterprise Offices nationwide, Local Enterprise Week was held during the week 4th to 8th March 2019 and featured 370 events running throughout the country, aimed at stimulating and supporting enterprise. Estimated attendance nationally was over 11,000. Fingal events accounted for over 1,000 businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs Cult Drinks took the top prize of €5,000 and will now represent Local Enterprise Office Fingal at the 21st National Enterprise Awards on Wednesday 29thMay in the Mansion House in Dublin. Employing ten staff from their based in Donabate, Cult Drinks have successfully launched and built a diversified portfolio of brands in both the domestic, UK and Global markets. There were two runners-up at the Fingal Enterprise Awards held at County hall in Swords: Busterbox from Ballycoolin (a subscription service for dog owners) and Peptalk of Lucan (a technology platform for employees to improve wellbeing). Each runner-up receives an investment of €2,000 in their business, while the other seven finalists receive €1,000. Judging is taking place in April and May and Cult Drinks will be competing against 30 other finalists from every local authority area for a share of the National €40,000 prize fund.

The Mansion House in Dublin is the venue for awards ceremony in May and categories this year include ‘Best Export Business,’ ‘Best Start Up Business’ and ‘Innovation,’ in addition to eight regional awards. Speaking during Local Enterprise Week Oisin Geoghegan Head of Fingal Local Enterprise Office said: “Cult Drinks has already become a

success story and the judges were particularly impressed by the year-on-year success of this business.The National Enterprise Awards are a great barometer for what the Local Enterprise Offices are doing and every year the standard is getting better and better and we are delighted to have Cult Drinks representing us in the Mansion House in May.”

Great win for Syls as Whitehall crumble under pressure St.Sylvesters 3-17 Whitehall Colmcille 0-3 On a rainy and damp morning recently the St Sylvesters senior footballers maintained their winning start to AFL 2 with a comprehensive victory over Whitehall Colmcille.Syls raced into a three point lead in the first five minutes and this was increased 0-7 to 0-1 by the tenth minute. With everyone displaying a high work rate some of the open play was very encouraging as was the defensive display. So much so that Sylvesters were leading by 0-12 to 0-2 at half time. The start to the second half was resolute and workman-like and the score stood at 1-14 to 0-2 after 40 minutes. Mark Hazley scored the first of this three goals, two from the penalty spot, and was on the mark further with seven points....0-3 from play. A penalty in the 45th minute led to a score-line of 2-15 to 0-3. In defence Conor Quinn, Andrew Cunningham and Dan Deneher was assured and ably supported by their colleagues. In truth it was a great all-round team display and the competition for places was summed up by the performance of substitutes like Pearse Gibney and Sean Daly. Minor player Josh Bannon also made his senior debut and it was good to see Jamie Kennedy return to action following a long time out with injury. With talent like Conor Meaney, Dave Sexton, Fionn Carney, Micheal McCarthy and Jack Whelan to come into consideration as well as the return of Glenn and Jack Hazley, the panel now focus on maintaining their winning ways into the future.
