Chief Scouts award for Sea cubs and Scouts

Ten Cubs and Scouts from Malahide Sea Scouts Tonnta Cub Pack were presented with their Chief Scouts Award by the North Eastern Provincial Commissioner Stephen Halpin a special convened Awards ceremony in Malahide Scout Den recently. Before the presentation the Provincial Commissioner inspected each Cub Scouts Logbook and was praiseworthy of the tasks and challenges undertaken by the cubs. The Chef Scouts Award is the culmination of over twelve months work for the Scouts and their leaders where their Scouting skills were pushed to new limits. The tasks undertaken were Sailing and Canoeing, Cooking, Backwoods, Tracking and Camping as well as a Twenty Kilometre Hike and a Twenty Kilometre Cycle. Each Cub Scout was presented with their Chief Scouts award badge and in Malahide tradition they were presented with a special Group Neckerchief which has a newly commissioned Group Badge on the Apex denoting that they are the holder of the prestigious â€œ Chief Scouts Awardâ€?. Parents Grandparents brothers and sisters were all present on the special night and with tea and refreshments for all it was a Scouting night at the Cub Scouts will remember for a long time to come.

The history of Townyard (Stable) Lane Townyard Lane takes its name from what was the town yard of the Malahide Estate. The yard occupied much of the area that is now the shopping centre car park. As the Estate owned much of the property in the village the yard was used for storing ladders, slates and other materials for maintenance work. Previously, Townyards lane was known as Stable Lane. The Pound was located here and there was a livery stable on the lane where locals could stable their horses or hire horses and it was a changing stage for coaches and horses which were stabled and rested here. The stage coach service ran several times a day between the Grand Hotel and the Gresham Hotel on Sackville Street (now O’Connell Street) in Dublin. The area now occupied by Insomnia, the Village Newsagent and Kerrigans was actually the garden of numbers 1 and 2 St. James’s Terrace. See the adjoining estate map of 1851. In latter days, a cinema, pub and dance-hall occupied space here. The remains of the townyard wall may still be seen to-day, at the rear of the supermarket. The right hand side of the line was comprised largely of mews, stables and coach houses associated with the large dwellings on St. James’s Terrace.

Gold again for Malahide Tidy Towns

Tidy Towns volunteers attending the announcement of the results this year.

Tidy Towns Malahide are having their AGM on 12th November at 7.30pm in the St. Sylvestor’s Parish Centre and all are welcome to attend. Malahide has done really well again this year securing, yet another, Gold Medal. A special mention was made by the judges, of the lovely raised bed gardens in front of the small houses on Strand Street, the heritage garden at the Train Station and the magical Fairy Garden at the library. Malahide jumped 7 points this year to 320 (Listowel won with 339 points). Tidy Towns Volunteers meet at 10.30am every Saturday morning at the Train Station and all ages are welcome. We’re currently looking for project ideas for 2019, particularly relating to waste reduction and sustainability. Some project around the migrating birds that visit Malahide has been suggested by the judges and any thoughts are welcome. €600,000 awarded to seven Fingal projects Balrothery: €100,000 has been allocated towards the enhancement of historic, commercial and recreational core of Balrothery, including the creation of new pedestrian linkages and street parking at the Balrothery Heritage Centre.

Fingal County Council has welcomed the allocation of €600,000 towards seven ambitious projects under the 2018 Town and Village Renewal Scheme.Projects in Lusk, Balrothery, Rush, and Portrane have been included in the allocation of €597,960 awarded to Fingal County Council.Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring announced total funding of €21million under the 2018 Town and Village Renewal Scheme, a key part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development. The funding will allow the Council progress the projects which aim to enhance and rejuvenate each of the seven towns and villages. Amongst the Fingal allocations are: €200,000 – Development of a tourism hub in Lusk on a strategic site within the village, which will include the delivery of a permanent exhibition space themed on the Life and Times of Thomas Ashe, a key nationalist in the 1916 Rising and a central figure in the community of Lusk and the greater Fingal region. The allocations include : €100,000 – Enhancement of historic, commercial and recreational core of Balrothery, including the creation of new pedestrian linkages and street parking at the Balrothery Heritage Centre. €100,000 – Enhancement of Rush Main Street, including a Paint and Shopfront Improvement Scheme, and Signage Provision to rejuvenate and revitalise the main street. €32,000 – Portrane Village enhancements to rejuvenate the appearance of the village and the green space area.

Fingal PPN Co-ordinator represents the youth of Ireland at the UN

Fingal PPN Co-ordinator Jamie Moore addresses the UN General Assembly.

Fingal Public Participation Network co-ordinator Jamie Moore has been appointed a Youth Advocate to the UN General Assembly in New York. Jamie is passionate and experienced in the community and voluntary spheres, and he has been acknowledged for this through awards such as the Gold Gaisce Award, All Island Pride of Place Award and Excellence in Local Government Award.Hailing from Dungarvan, he currently co-ordinates the Fingal Public Participation Network (PPN) in Fingal County Council and sits on the National PPN Advisory Group in the Department of Rural and Community Development. Jamie has been selected together with Aisling O’Boyle, from Dundrum, to join Ireland’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York this Autumn. As Ireland’s UN Youth Delegates for 2018/19 they work closely with Ireland’s Permanent Mission to the UN and represent the youth of Ireland during sessions of the UN committee dealing with human rights issues. The programme is run by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Irish Aid, and the National

Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI), which represents organisations working with over 380,000 young people each year.Jamie is a committed advocate for education and sustainable development, with a focus on youth issues.In a speech to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, October 3, Jamie said: “It is unacceptable that a young person’s education should be dictated by circumstances of their birth. It should instead be reflective of their boundless potential, and cater to their unique needs. The ultimate objective of governments should be to provide the necessary infrastructure and services to ensure wellbeing of young people and empower them to break the cycle of poverty and to become agents of change in their lives, and the lives of their families and communities.” He emphasised the role of youth in shaping the future, calling for, “UN Member States and civil society to take radical steps to deliver on this, working with and for young people to be the generation for change. Young people make up 25 per cent of the world’s population today, but they make up 100 per cent of the future”.

Siobhan Kinsella appointed President of Chambers Ireland Siobhan Kinsella, newly appointed as President of Chambers Ireland.

Fingal County Council congratulates former Director and President of Fingal Dublin Chamber Siobhan Kinsella on her appointment as President of Chambers Ireland recently. Siobhan joined the board of Chambers Ireland in 2014 and served as Director of Fingal Dublin Chamber from 2007 to 2017 and as President from 2013 to 2015. She succeeds Niamh Boyle, Managing Director of the Reputations Agency who held the position since 2016. Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid said: “I am delighted to congratulate Siobhan on her appointment as President of Chambers Ireland. I am confident that her experience, skills and professionalism will be hugely valuable in her new role. She has made a significant contribution as Director of Fingal Chambers in representing businesses and I look forward to seeing her continue this work at a national level.”Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin said: “Having served with Siobhan on the Fingal Economic Development & Enterprise SPC and the Drinam Enterprise Centre, I know she is a great ambassador for Fingal and Fingal County Council. With her professional experience as a Director within The Noel Group and The Cpl Institute as well as her experience representing businesses as Director of Fingal Chambers, I am sure that she will be a valuable asset to Chambers Ireland and wish her the best of luck in her new role.” Siobhan currently holds the position of Operations Director of ‘The Noel Group’, one of Ireland’s largest recruitment organisations, with eight offices across Ireland providing permanent workforce solutions. She has also worked as a Director for The Cpl Institute, the learning and development branch of the recruitment firm Cpl Resources. Siobhan holds an MBA from the University of Wales. Commenting on assuming her new role, Siobhan said: “Holding the presidency of Chambers Ireland is an exciting opportunity. As a Wexford native, and a long-time member of my local Chamber in Fingal, I’m proud of the work that chambers do around the county and as President, I look forward to supporting this work in the coming year.”

More teachers and funding for schools in Fingal – Senator Reilly Schools in Fingal will benefit from more SNAs, teachers and funding thanks to a caring, balanced and fair Budget, Fine Gael Senator James Reilly has said. He said €196m extra investment means more new schools for Fingal Senator Reilly said, “Budget 2019 marks the third year of a major reinvestment in the education sector, as we continue to progress the Action Plan for Education, our plan to make Ireland’s education and training service the best in Europe by 2026. In 2019, the budget for the Department of Education and Skills will increase by €674 million, a 6.7% increase on last year. This will bring Government expenditure on education and skills to its highest ever level of nearly €10.8 billion. This includes the highest ever capital allocation for education - €941 million, a €196m increase on 2018. I look forward to more new schools being constructed in Fingal, St Michaels House School for Special needs in Skerries, Hedgestown National School, St Mologas School Balbriggan, new schools in Donabate, Swords, Malahide , New School for St Josephs in Rush, Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

Local schools will also benefit from upgraded ICT equipment.” Senator Reilly said: “Budget 2019 will see numbers employed in our schools reach the highest ever level. Over 1,300 additional posts in schools will be funded, including 950 additional SNA posts and 372 teaching posts to cater for growth in student population and additional special classes.” He added, “All schools in Fingal will receive a 5% increase in capitation from September 2019. Over the course of the school year 2019/20, an additional €10 million will be allocated to primary and post primary schools, of which €4 million will be allocated in 2019. Nearly €5 million is being allocated to support the implementation of the Comprehensive Review of the SNA scheme, which is intended to support a new school inclusion model to deliver the right supports at the right time to students with additional care needs here in Fingal. The Government has significantly increased investment in special education in recent years.”

Style Warrior Fashion and Entertainment Show took place on Saturday 6 th October in Wrights Venue Swords in aid of NECRET Cancer Research and was a huge success. After a year of promoting and producing it I can sit back and say, “ Done that ! seen that ! wore the T-Shirt until I get the need to do it all over again. I am so thankful to everybody who helped create this wonderful success. Here are a collection of photos of the wonderful wmadness on stage. Mattress Mick almost took flight like Mary Poppins and the crowd loved him. The entertainment was amazing and we had such a colourful collection from our shops and designers. We opened the show with Project Fashion Kids who were truly amazing. Then B-Fly dance crew blew us away with their super cool moves. We had Emily Nayhree with her Dirty Dublin Collection just after Professor Bryan Hennessy gave a few minutes talk about his work in both hospital and NECRET his charity. The shops on board were Change Lingerie Galway, Vila Pavilions , AB Formal Wear for Men in Swords, CoCo Belle Boutique Donabate ,Sensation Clothing Swords and Louis Copeland Capel St. Our other super designers included Ksenina Design and Style , Golden Stitch , Summer Mist, One Off by Tatianna, Lady Grace , Jynx Knight and myself Carina Cunningham. He is a born leader and loved by us all. The finale was my collection led by Madonna Vogue Cream ladies with fluttering fans, Followed by Phantom of the opera Vintage Collection, my Burlesque theme with bright orange and hot pink feathers and finally Bram Stokers Dracula. Drama right to the end. Super fun, Super People. A huge thank you to the make-up artists. The make-up crew, FX make-up Academy, Gillian Stapleton Mua, Daria Janiwska, and the lovely Bianca and staff. The hair crew - Veronika Byrne , Caroline Quigley-Ward, Virginia Vitkauskiene and Joanne Phelan. I would have been lost without their help. Lady Lana wins the crown at Style Warriors Show Lana Salome Kurasidze is a professional model living in Dublin. She is the only model I’m aware of who is wheelchair bound. Lana met us at one of our casting days trying out like all the other models wanting to be part of this show to help our charity NECRET Cancer Research. She showed us her portfolio of shoots to date and we were so impressed with her we just wanted her on board. In 2006 Lana was diagnosed with a fatal brain Tumor ( Gilobastoma Multiforme Grade 4). Her doctors were predicting her survival as only up to three months and guessing after that. However she is still here thank god and keeps busy working out in the gym six days a week and is even taking boxing classes. She has fantastic inner strength and has made her own You tube video showing how she exercises while using her wheelchair. Her aim is to be a positive example and inspire people to continue to be the person they are and not let their illness consume them. We had planned putting Lana on to a throne in the fashion show but when we had her dressed in her wheelchair we realized this is the way for her to model and she did it with class. I have watched her You tube video –‘Lana - June 2017 training with Lana Salome Kurasidze ‘and it’s very clear she is a beautiful person both inside and out. We were privileged to have her on our show and I really hope in the future we can do something new together. Take a look at her pictures guys and girls and see this beautiful lady. All of our white turkeys are from Hogan’s Family Farm in Kells, Co Meath. Their Charlesfort Turkey breed is a slow growing turkey maturing over a longer period of time adding to its delicious flavour. Compared to the commercial turkey it has a bigger more rounded breast formation, giving more breast meat per lb. Our free range bronze turkeys are reared locally by Irene Kelly in Lusk. These have a darker meat with more intense flavour.

All ham is free range and sourced from FX Buckley’s. Our butchers can provide any cut of choice, from traditionally cured ham fillets, to a full ham on the bone.

Colourful Chicken Curry Forget the chill with warming Curry. As the weather starts to turn chillier, eating foods with spices can help to warm us up from the inside out! Curries are a great dish for cooking in a batch and leaving it to simmer to develop the flavours of the spices. Curry also freezes quite well, providing a flavoursome, nourishing and warming meal for those busy days that you may not have much time to spend in the kitchen. There are so many variations on curry. My recipe is really colourful, tasty, healthy and lean with all the different vegetables.

Colourful chicken curry Makes 4 portions Ingredients • 16

3-4 (550g) Chicken fillets, chopped into pieces

1 large spanish onion, cut into chunks 3 Garlic cloves, crushed/chopped finely 1 Red pepper, cut into chunks 1 Yellow pepper, cut into chunks 2 whole Fresh red chillis, diced 100g Spinach leaves 200g Natural flavour greek yogurt 1 tin chopped tomatoes 4 tablespoons curry powder 400mls water

Method 1. Prepare and wash the vegetables. Place aside. 2. Prepare and chop the chicken. 3. Heat a non stick pan on a medium heat. If not using a non-stick pan then heat 4 teaspoons of oil in a high sided pan. 4. Add the onion, garlic and fresh chilies and cook on a medium-high

heat. 5. Add the chicken and curry powder. Allow the chicken to cook thoroughly and absorb the flavours from the curry powder. 6.Add the peppers, tin of chopped tomatoes and 400mls hot water. Stir to mix. 7. Simmer for 1 hour until the liquid reduces. In the mean time the condiment such as rice could be cooked as per instructions on the product label. 9.Finally, stir in the spinach leaves and yogurt. Serve and enjoy. How to avoid a potential tax liability for unmarried couples Considering that the 2016 Census showed that there are over 152,000 cohabiting, unmarried couples in Ireland, it’s worth making sure that any cover is set up correctly to avoid potentially large tax liabilities. Let’s take “John” & “Mary” who live together but are not married. If they have a life policy that covers both of them for €300,000, in the event of a claim, depending on how the premiums were paid, there could be a sizeable tax liability. If John passes away and the premiums were paid from a joint account that both contributed to, then Mary is deemed to have inherited 50% of the proceeds (€150,000). Not being married, she is only entitled to the “Stranger’s” tax-free threshold of €16,250, so she is liable to pay tax on the balance (€133,750 x 33% = €44,137.50 tax bill!) If John paid the premiums, Mary is deemed to have inherited all of the proceeds, leaving her with a tax bill of €93,637.50. If Mary paid all of the premiums herself, then there is no tax liability. It is important that couples in this situation set up their cover accordingly, by doing 2 x “life of another” plans. This way, each pays for the cover on their partner and then there would not be a tax liability in the event of a claim. This can often be done at no more cost than they pay for a joint plan. Taking a few minutes to review what you have in place for something as important as this can make a huge difference. If you have friends or family that this may apply to, make a suggestion for them to read this to see if there is anything that needs adjusting. Inspiring careers with Fingal Libraries’ STEMcon

Inspiring the next generation was the theme of Fingal Libraries’ STEMcon on Wednesday last, October 10, and the event did just that, as almost 300 people - including students from eight local secondary schools, representatives from home-schooling groups, and Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid - attended the conference at the Castleknock Hotel. Organised in association with Science Foundation Ireland, Creative Ireland, Europe Direct, and the Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown (ITB), the event was introduced by Senior Executive Librarian Lilian Whelan, County Librarian, Betty Boardman, and formally launched by

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin. In his address, Mayor Lavin spoke about the importance of studying STEM-based subjects, and the reasons why a STEM-based career is a good move, before praising Fingal Libraries’ endeavours to promote these subjects across the county. “Fingal Libraries are leading the charge when it comes to fostering interest in STEM,” he told the rapt audience. Dr Mary Meaney, former President of ITB, and the first women appointed to lead an Institute of Technology in Ireland, was an excellent Moderator for the event. The morning began with the Executive Fire Prevention Officer of Dublin Fire Brigade, Ruth Walsh and Fingal County Council’s Community Archaeologist, Christine Baker; who was asked by one excited audience member whether she had ever found a dinosaur bone. We were also delighted to hear from Site Reliability Engineer in Google Dublin, Eimear Crotty and IT Director with Liberty Information Technology (LIT), Felim O’Donnell before Deputy State Pathologist, Dr. Linda Mulligan spoke, declaring her delight at addressing a “live” audience!We heard how to ‘Earn as you learn with an Aviation Apprenticeship’ from Apprentice Aircraft Engineer, Patrick Grogan, before the final speaker, Eimear Ni Bhroin, Language Officer with the European Commission Representation in Ireland, asked the crucial question ‘Can languages unlock a career?’ A lively and extremely interactive question and answers session followed, as the attendees got a chance to quiz the panel on their careers.

U 18â€™s make great start to the season

Malahide U18s started their season in great fashion with a thumping 31-0 win over Coolmine in the league. The first half was very tight with Malahide taking a narrow 5-0 lead. The unfortunate loss of a player to a broken leg at the stroke of half time seemed to motivate the home team to step up a gear as they swept Coolmine aside in the second half. As for the injury wish the lad a speedy recovery and hope he is back playing once again as soon as possible. Punishing forward play and brilliant running from the backs saw them score four tries, while giving nothing away in defence. Against very tough opposition, it was a game Malahide wanted more and they thoroughly deserved their victory.

Cup Victory for Malahide United AFC’s U15s

By Rebecca Daly Malahide United AFC’s U15A team won their cup final for the Ned Behan Cup against St. John Vianney of Artane recently. Played on the 11 a-side pitch at the Oscar Traynor Centre,the game finished 2-0, with two superbly taken goals from Oliver Carroll and Harry Smith. The win was a first for the boys and their manager Karl Spain in this competition. However, while there have been some changes in the team, for the most part it has been the same for the past ten years. Karl says that he’s over the moon for Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

the players as “they do all the hard work.” The boys were well prepared for the game and put in around three hours of preparation between their training sessions on the Wednesday and Thursday before the match. These sessions had full attendance as the lads were keen to bring the cup home and their dedication paid off. Karl summed that up by saying, “The guys during the week were just ready to go.” However, the team had to postpone their celebrations as they are in the running to win their league, with the final in early November. They will play Glebe North Football Club from Balbriggan in the meantime and are focussed on

that at present. Karl is feeling good about the team’s ability. He mentioned that when it comes to games, he lets the players take control. “We let them make the decisions.” However, Karl believes that winning is not the most important thing and that he’ll be happy if they can develop as players. He said, “If they try their best and they put in a great performance good things happen.” The lads have a big challenge ahead of them but in the meantime our heartiest congratulations on winning the Behan Cup and we look forward to their continued success in the future.
