Editor’s Note

Hello and welcome to the second edition of Malahide Local Magazine.. We really hope you enjoy it! We hope to bring you news each month from your local clubs, schools, committees and societies, to keep you up to date on what’s happening locally. March is traditionally considered as the month to celebrate being Irish across the world. Perhaps surprisingly St. Patrick’s Day only became a national holiday here in 1903 - and to prevent too much enjoyment of the day all pubs were ordered to remain closed! It was not until 1931 that the first ‘official’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in Dublin. While St. Patrick would be surprised and amazed at many of the changes in Ireland since his time, he would recognise something that has never changed - community spirit. Without it our lives would be much poorer, we would be more isolated both from neighbours and from the wider community, and many of the little things we take for granted would be noticeable by their absence - a good example being Tidy Towns. We are here to help you spread the news about your community events big and small, and if we have not heard from you yet please get in touch and tell us your news so we can spread your good stories to all of the community. Thanks to all the businesses who supported us in our first edition, and we ask all our new readers to please support them too. Let’s work together to make it better!

Dublin GAA teams honoured by Council

The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler makes a special presentation Dublin Ladies Senior Team player Niamh McEvoy (St Sylvester’s) to mark the team’s achievements in 2016. Also in the picture are Sinead Ahern (St Sylvester’s), Emma Colgan (Fingallians) and Oliva Leonard (St Maur’s).

The Dublin Senior Football Team and the Dublin Ladies Senior Football Team were honoured by Fingal County Council for their achievements in 2016 at a special ceremony in County Hall, Swords. The chairman of the Dublin Co Board, Sean Shanley, and Chief Executive John Costello were present along with Paul Flynn (Fingallians), Paddy Andrews (St Brigid’s) and Darren Daly (Fingal Ravens) from the men’s team and Niamh McEvoy (St Sylvester’s), Sinead Ahern (St Sylvester’s), Emma Colgan (Fingallians) and Oliva Leonard (St Maur’s) from the Ladies team. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, said 2016 had been a very good year for Dublin GAA with the men retaining their All-Ireland Football Championship and the National Football League titles, while the Ladies reached a third successive All-Ireland final and the semi-finals of the National League. “If you look at the Dublin GAA crest you will see the Fingal Raven prominently displayed and we are proud of the contribution that clubs and players from our area play in the success of Dublin’s GAA teams from under-age to senior,” said the Mayor. The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid also paid tribute to both teams and, in particular, the players. “You are role models for people in the county because of what you on daily and a weekly basis,” he said. Many of the Councillors present at the presentation also took the opportunity to speak and congratulate the players on their achievements and the inspiration they provide to the citizens of the county. In reply, the chairman of the Dublin Co Board, Sean Shanley, thanked the Mayor and Council for honouring the teams and also praised the Council for their assistance in helping clubs throughout the county, particularly in the provision of playing facilities. 4

Pride of Place Competition

Fingal County Council is looking for communities and projects in the county interested in taking part in the 2017 IPB Pride of Place Competition. Pride of Place is an All-Ireland competition which showcases the best in community achievement. It is organised by Co-operation Ireland and is open to every local Authority north and south to nominate groups to represent their county. In 2016 Fingal was represented by the Mulhuddart Motocross Project, Skerries Age Friendly town and the communities of Donabate & Portrane. At the finals, held in Belfast in November, the Mulhuddart Motocross Club was given a special award

in recognition of the community endeavour involved. In addition the community of Donabate/ Portrane was runner-up in the Population category for areas with over 5,000 people.

The 2017 Competition will again have population categories for communities ranging in size from 300 up to larger areas of over 5,000 persons. In addition, specialist categories covering, youth-centred projects, cultural projects and urban neighbourhoods and housing estates will feature. Local authorities can enter up to five categories each year. Fingal County Council has been involved in Pride of Place for over ten years and in that time over 30 communities and projects

have done Fingal proud by taking part in the Competition. There have been nine outright winners, runners-up and special category prizes over those years. Among the communities to have picked up awards in Pride of Place since 2004 are Skerries, Malahide, Ballyboughal, Donabate, Parslickstown House, Draiocht Arts Centre and Mulhuddart. Communities and projects interested in representing Fingal County Council in the 2017 IPB Pride of Place Competition should email the community office at community@ fingal.ie and state in no more than 300 words why you feel you are a good candidate for the 2017 Pride of Place competition. Emails should be sent before close of business on Friday March 24th.

Fingal County Council Announce 2017 Artists’ Support Scheme for professional Fingal Artists Fingal County Council has announced the 2017 Artists’ Support Scheme. The funding allows professional artists to avail of an award towards travel/professional development opportunities, a residency, or towards the development of work. The objective of the Artists’ Support Scheme is to support individual professional artists from Fingal to develop their artistic practice. The purpose of the award is to provide artists with the time and resources to think, research, reflect and engage with their artistic practice. The award is open to practising artists at all stages in their professional careers working in music, visual art, drama, literature & dance. To be eligible to apply, applicants must: have been born, have studied, or currently reside in the Fingal administrative area. Speaking about the award, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid said “I am pleased to announce this funding scheme, which assists artists to develop their professional careers. The Council awarded 29 artists through this scheme last year and continues to nurture artistic excellence in Fingal.” The funding is for projects/initiatives which will take place between 1 June - 31 December 2017. Baby Talk!

Baby sign language is a series of simple gestures, or signs, that parents and their little one use together to quickly and easily convey meaning. The signs are used before a baby can even talk, so it helps reduce the frustration associated with him not being understood. Most babies don’t begin to speak until well into their second or even third year and this can lead to frustration and tantrums. However, a baby who expects to be understood - and can be understood using sign language - is calmer in any situation. Imagine your baby could tell you he wanted his teddy, or more milk, or that he saw a plane! It is a lot of fun for both babies and their parents. Baby sign language is very simple. Babies will have the gross motor skills from around six or seven months to make signs. Using ISL, Irish Sign Language, parents and their babies learn the signs for people, objects and emotions they will use every day. Parents are encouraged to start with just one or two signs and to use them consistently and in context. For example, every time you go for a drive you say the word ‘car’ as you sign it. “Does baby want to go out in the car?”, “You like the car, don’t you?”, “What a lovely red car!”. You are repeating the word and the sign, and baby quickly understands what the sign means. Then, after a while, he will be able to sign back. Language follows movement and signing helps activate all the parts of the brain that are used in language acquisition. You are making it easier for babies to remember words and sounds by adding a kinesthetic and visual element to the aural and oral side of language. Babies naturally begin to gesture between 6 and 10 months old. For example, they point at an object of interest; 8

they raise their hands when they want to be picked up; they wave hello and goodbye; and they nod and shake their heads. Teaching a baby to sign is simply extending their existing gestural vocabulary. Baby sign language is most suitable for infants between the ages of 3 and 23 months old. They will begin to understand meaning at around 3 months old, and will begin to meaningfully communicate at around 6 months. Around this time the fine motor coordination necessary for signing develops too. Signing will take babies through those sometimes difficult first couple of years when they long to explore and communicate with the world, but are often scuppered by the inability to express themselves. As they begin to talk the signing drops away but, as outlined below, the benefits are long term. It has been shown that signing can be of great benefit to preschoolers and in the early school years too, helping develop early literacy and numeracy. Marilyn Daniels, a professor of speech communication indicates: “Sign language can be used to improve hearing children’s English vocabulary, reading ability, spelling proficiency, self esteem and comfort with expressing emotions.” There are many advantages to using sign language with your baby. Here are just a few: Firstly it reduces the incidents of tantrums arising from frustration. Signing also encourages your baby to talk - you speak as you sign - and research shows that babies who sign tend to talk earlier than their non-signing counterparts. It also creates a strong parent/child bond. When you spend time signing with your baby, you spend quality time speaking with them, making

eye contact and, often, singing and saying rhymes. These fun activities for baby are crucial to their early development and will help their vocabulary, self-expression and confidence by providing them with a responsive and nurturing environment. Research has shown that babies who learn to sign have a greater vocabulary at school-going age and a higher IQ at the age of eight. Signing is great for emotional development too. When a baby can sign he is hot, cold, tired, calm, excited, hungry, sick, sad, happy etc. he is developing an awareness of his emotions, and a vocabulary with which to express them. Teaching your baby to sign is fantastic for fine motor coordination - thus giving your little computer programmer/engineer/footballer/ dancer/artist a head start in developing these crucial skills. In order to do all those clever things when your baby is older, she needs first to develop her hand to eye coordination and her spatial reasoning. Signing is a simple way to have your baby practice these skills every day from an early age. Much as we adore our little darlings, those early days of being a parent can be draining. It seems like a continuous cycle of eat, poo, sleep...eat, poo, sleep... repeat. Why not break the monotony by communicating, and really connecting, with your baby before she can even speak? Imagine going to your 9 month old baby in the morning to pick her up out of the cot, only to see her sign ‘Mammy’ or ‘Daddy’. Now, if that doesn’t start your day with a smile, nothing will.

St Sylvesters goes from Strength to Strength The under 10 girls football team in St Sylvesters is going from strength to strength. We now have a squad of 36 girls who meet to train every Wednesday evening in Broomfield, there’s always a great turn out for training no matter what the weather! Many of the group have come through St. sylvesters nursery, we also have a few girls who have only joined recently. The benefit of team sport participation is clear to see, with many girls making new friendships and having great fun. This season we are participating in the Dublin ladies Gaelic u10 league, where we will be playing in a three team league in Dublin north county with our first match against st Vincent’s planned for Saturday 25th in Broomfield. We are very grateful to Ciara McCabe from McCabes Pharmacy who recently arranged sponsorship of half zip tops for all the team. The girls love their tops and with all the group having them it really adds to our team spirit. Thank you to McCabes! Also our weekly training and weekend matches would not be possible without the time and commitment given by Mentor Fergal McParland and the coaching team of Derek Neill, Shay Cullen, Aoife Haverty, Deirdre Sharkey, Ronan Dempsey and Sarah McParland. A big thank you from all the girls to the team of coaches.

Malahide United Hits The Netherlands Malahide United U14 Premier team travelled to The Netherlands in February to play two games against opposition teams based in The Hague: BSC’68 FC (Benthuizen) and DSO Zoetermeer FC. The trip extended the connection between Malahide United and BSC’68, as the Dutch team travelled to Dublin in 2016 to play in Gannon Park. The Malahide team tested their footballing skills against two U15 teams, with a 2-0 win vs BSC’68 and a 2-1 loss vs Zoetermeer. Both games were of a high calibre, played at a very competitive pace, with players looking to keep the ball on the ground and pass. BSC’68 generously hosted Malahide to a Winter BBQ, where the friendship was extended over good food, followed by presentations to the players and speeches from both managers and the BSC’68 Club President. The trip included a visit to the Kyocera Stadium to see Den Haag vs Feynoord and a tour around the Amsterdam Arena, the home of Ajax and the Dutch national team.

U21s keep St. Sylvester’s warm

In what has become the Dublin County Board “brass monkey” U21 Championships, St. Sylvesters has had a great out of season set of games in both football and hurling. The club only play a knockout championship in the U21 grades in Dublin, having dropped the league format quite a few years ago due to overload on players in that age group. In the U21 Football Championship B Final St

Sylvesters beat Raheny by 2-13 to 0-13 U21 in a fast-paced final. Raheny had taken an early lead but never recovered from one of their backs being sent off later in the game/ Syls also accounted for Clontarf, this years Minor A Champions and Ballinteer St Johns in the earlier rounds. In the U21 Hurling Championship C Final St. Sylvesters went down to St, Maurs, 3-09 to 1-11.

Syls were trailing for most of the first half before striking back in the second, but, despite all efforts, the goals did not come and St. Maurs brought a hurling trophy to the North of the County. Syls had beaten St Kevins in the semi final in a cracking game of hurling and an equally fine away win over Kilmacud Crokes.

Danger of Palm Oil Fatbergs on Fingal Coastline Fingal County Council has issued a warning for people to be vigilant for ‘Palm Oil Fatbergs’ which may be washed up along the coast as they can be particularly dangerous to dogs. A number were found recently at Hoare’s Rock, Skerries, and results from laboratory tests have showed that the substance was Palm Oil. It is believed that the Palm Oil was part of a consignment which came off a ship in the English Channel about 18 months ago. The congealed substance has been turning up sporadically on beaches and coasts in England but this is the first time it has been recorded in Fingal. A Fingal County Council spokesperson said: “We believe the discovery of this material in Skerries on Sunday is an isolated incident as we have not had any other sightings along the Fingal coastline. The material is a solid white substance which is known as a ‘Palm Oil Fatberg’ and they can range in size from being as small as a golf ball to as big as a boulder. We are asking the public to be vigilant as this substance can be harmful to dogs.”

Heat a large pan with a tbs of extra virgin olive oil place the prawns in it cook for one minute and turn them add shallots garlic and chilli cook for one minute more add the wine bring it to boiling point and finish with the butter and parsley. For the garnish 1 large roasted red pepper sliced 200g baby rocket 2 tbs of chopped walnuts Mix all the ingredients and dress them with 3 tsp of extra virgin olive oil and 1 tsp of balsamic vinegar a pinch of salt and enjoy.

Many Hands Make Light Work!!!

Hoping to increase the number of points that Malahide received in the Tidy Towns Competition last year, Malahide Tidy Towns are organising several ‘Clean Ups.’ First up is a ‘Spring Clean Up’ on Saturday, March 11, from 10.00am - meet at the Railway Station. Bring gloves and yard brushes if possible, if not they will be supplied.

Everyone is encouraged to join in, young, old, male, female - the more the merrier. Malahide is a great village to live in, the community spirit is fantastic, and Tidy Towns want to show the adjudication panels how many people actually care about their village and come out to assist on these clean ups.
