Welcome to the very first edition of Malahide Local Magazine.. We really hope you enjoy it! We hope to bring you news each month from your local clubs, schools, committees and societies, to keep you up to date on what’s happening locally to you.. So say Goodbye to January Blues and Hello to February. The 1st traditionally marks the beginning of spring though the local temperatures would not have you assuming that in many cases. We have a lot to celebrate this month being the month of Love February 14th - Saint Valentine’s Day make sure to make it special with your loved ones. Also not forgetting Shrove Tuesday (or Pancake Tuesday) on the 28th February. Any local clubs, Schools or Committees we have not yet heard from please get in touch and tell us your news so we can spread your good stories to all of the community. Great Achievement for Malahide Swimmer Rachael Lee

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, makes a special presentation to Rachael Lee to mark her achievement in setting the fastest ever time for swimming the English Channel by an Irish person.

Fingal County Council has honoured the achievement of Malahide swimmer Rachael Lee in setting the fastest ever time by an Irish person for swimming the English Channel. Last August, she swam from Dover to Calais in 9 hours and 40 minutes and beat the previous best time by 11 minutes which had, ironically, been set by her partner Tom Healy. A special presentation was made to Rachael by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, who said: “Swimming the Channel is one of the great feats in the sport of swimming and Rachael has joined an illustrious group of special men and women. “We shouldn’t be too surprised at Rachael’s feat or her impressive time because she has impressive

pedigree as a swimmer. Her swimming skills were honed off the High Rock in Malahide and she is also a Swift-Water Rescue Technician, as part of her day job with Dublin Fire Brigade. Indeed, she was involved in the rescue of a man who fell into the River Liffey just days before her Channel swim.” The Mayor also recalled that Rachael was part of a Dublin Fire Brigade team that completed a two-way relay swim of the Channel in 2008 and has also won the Irish Long Distance Swimming Association’s Women’s Championship as well as the prestigious Lake Windemere Race in Britain and the Liffey Swim here in Ireland. Tributes were also paid by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Eithne Loftus and Councillors Anthony

Lavin, Matthew Wain, Eugene Coppinger and Dara Ní Laoi. Other present at the reception in the Council Chamber at County Hall, Swords, were Councillors Joe Newman, David O’Connor, Howard Mahony, Adrian Henchy, Anne Devitt, Edmund Lukusa, Paul Mulville, Paul Donnelly, Barry Martin and Brian Dennehy. The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, also added his congratulations and said: “We try to encourage people to be active in sport because we have such a young population in Fingal. Sport promotes wellbeing and positive mental health and we now have another great model in Rachael Lee.”

Month of Goodbye to miserable, dreary January. Hello February; month of romance! But, if like us, you have children and limited access to babysitters for Valentine’s day you may not be able to get out for a night on the town. Don’t worry, with a little planning you can have a romantic night at home. First tip is to feed the children separately. Give them dinner early and set them up in front of a movie with popcorn and the promise of an ice-pop if they are quiet for a while. Then set the table with candles, linens and wine and enjoy a quiet dinner for two with dimmed lights and soft music. Why not play a special song after dinner and have a dance around the kitchen? Fingal artworks are texaco calendar choice An artwork by 16-year old Fingal student Wiktoria Anna Witkowska from Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan, has been chosen to illustrate the 2017 Texaco Children’s Art Calendar. One of 13 chosen to illustrate the publication, Wiktoria’s piece, entitled ‘The Face’, appeared during the month of December and will be seen in thousands of homes throughout Ireland in 2017. Winning second prize in category A of the 2016 competition, it was one of a number said by a competition adjudicator to perfectly reflect the incredible talent and imagination of children and the essential role played by schools who encourage and inspire their students through art education. Another Fingal student – Nicole Halpin (13) from Malahide Community School – was also chosen. Her work, entitled ‘Love Is...’ can be seen reproduced in the month of February. Over recent months, their works have featured in exhibitions held in Belfast, Drogheda and Dublin.

Malahide man appointed by mercedes-benz

In anticipation of continued growth in 2017, Malahide man David Latham has been appointed to the position of Truck Sales Specialist by Naas Roadbased Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles dealership MUTEC. Having held a similar position with Rygor Trucks, the largest Mercedes-Benz truck dealership in the UK, David is IMI qualified in Truck Sales & Account Management. The final Battle takes place!

The Battle of the Book is a reading programme that ran from September 2016 to January 2017 between Fingal Libraries and six primary schools within the Fingal area and is kindly supported by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). The aim of the programme is to get children reading, by using a multi-disciplinary interactive approach with art, an author visit and an active competition element between the different schools and their local library. The programme is designed to encourage the children to read and gain confidence, to discuss a common book providing a shared experience of reading to ignite a reading for life culture. As well as reading the book “The Ghosts of Magnificent Children” by Caroline Busher the children participate in different activities organised by Fingal Libraries surrounding the themes presented in the book. Two hundred school children from six Fingal schools descended on the Draíocht theatre in Blanchardstown last month, to battle it out in the final of the Battle of the Book. All of the children read The Ghosts of the Magnificent Children by first time author Caroline Busher, who visited each of the schools involved. The schools partaking in the competition were St. Margaret’s National School, Mary Queen of Ireland National School Rivermead, Old Borough Swords, St. Nicholas of Myra Kinsealy, St. Marnock’s Portmarnock and St. Patrick’s in Skerries. The children gathered to take part in a quiz to see which school knew the book and its author best. Ghosts.. is a spooky tale of an evil circus ringmaster, undead children, a blood curse and plenty of weird and wonderful twists and plots. RTE Junior presenter Reuben said when reading the questions out ‘only with this book could I possibly utter the following sentence...what is the name of the man with a duck’s head for a face...!’ It was a very close competition but St Margaret’s National School came out as victors in a highly contested final. The project is jointly funded by the Dublin Airport Authority DAA and Fingal Libraries. Maura Cassidy of the DAA was on hand to present the St Margaret’s team with their certificate. 12

Fantastic experience at Chez Sara Restaurant Malahide Malahide village is a fantastic place full of colour and atmosphere, from its marina to the gardens and the castle, it has developed into a modern and progressive town. Malahide has also acquired a reputation as gourmet capital of the East Coast, to be a successful restaurant or pub in the village one has to be pretty special indeed. With 36 eateries and 7 pubs it can be tough to compete, of all these Chez Sara Wine Bar and Restaurant is one of the best around and well worth a visit. This little hidden gem situated at 3 Old Street Malahide, opened its door 13 years ago. The chef /owner Max Usai took over a year ago, and kept the same vintage Frenchstyle bistro as before but he took it to a different level. Chez Sara is a casual, charming and intimate restaurant offering a high quality of steak and sea food cooked with a Mediterranean flare. As soon as we walked in the door we were given a warm welcome, and the place was surprisly busy for a Tuesday night in the middle of January. We had no reservation but we were accommodated quite quickly. The a la carte menu is extensive and well-priced, the early bird menu is also great value, two starter, two main courses and a bottle of wine for €59.00, but we decided to order from the special’s board. I had the Gambas a la Plancha to start with and a pan fried fillet of Hake with prawns, spinach and asparagus velouté is to die for, my guest had the Antipasto misto followed by the Beef Bourguignon with creamy mash potato and she was well impressed. To drink, Max recommended us a bottle of Dolcetto d’Ovada, which was on as special and it went down like a treat. The wine list is large and interesting ideal for any wine lover, you can find a great selection of European wine with an emphasis on French and Italian and some excellent new world wines as well. The next time you are planning a special night out, why not give Chez Sara a try, you won’t be disappointed. 14

Ingredients • 200g Kale • 1/2 tablespoon rapeseed/olive/coconut oil • Juice from 1/2 lemon/ lime 1/2 teaspoon each of a mix of herbs and spices such as chilli powder/cayenne pepper/smoked paprika.... Tip: If you have a dressing at home such as chilli & lime or basil & garlic, you could also use 1-2 tablespoons of this instead of making your own dressing.

Method “Kale....many of us consume it in juices, salads or the traditional Irish ‘colcannon’. But do you know just how nutritionally good kale is and how it can be eaten as a much healthier alternative to standard potato crisps? Kale has a rich iron and vitamin B12 content, both really essential for our energy, alertness, drive and focus in daily tasks. Kale contains several different flavonoids so it is boasting with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Not to mention its high calcium, vitamin C, vitamin K and vitamin A content. It is heart healthy, high in fibre and health promoting. Indeed with all these nutrients we could refer to it as the ‘50 shades of kale’!!! To maximise the nutritional benefits of kale such as the absorption of its calcium and iron content, try combine it with a food rich in vitamin C such as other vegetables like peppers, potatoes, other leafy greens or fruit such as oranges, kiwi or a squeeze of lemon/lime juice. Research also shows that absorption of fat soluble vitamins- A, D, E and K can be aided by combining foods rich in these vitamins with a small amount of healthy fats such as rapeseed or olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, oily fish. In my recipe below I use a splendid mix of healthy fats and vitamin C to make my kale crisps CRAZILY NUTRITIOUS AND DELICIOUS!!. ENJOY!

50 Shades of Kale coming your way: 1. Preheat oven to 150’c. 2. Rip the kale up into large leaves with your hands by removing the stalks. (Throw the stalks into a juice or other recipe. DO NOT WASTE OR YOU WONT BE GETTING YOUR 50 SHADES OF KALE!!) 3. Make the dressing by mixing your chosen oil with juice and herbs/spices. 4. Toss the kale in a large mixing bowl with your dressing. It is important to do this in a mixing bowl rather than on the baking tray to ensure the leaves get covered evenly. 5. Spread the kale pieces onto a baking tray (use a baking sheet/parchment paper to prevent burning). Ensure the kale pieces are not overcrowding so that they all get a fair share of crisping! 6. Bake at 120’c for 15 minutes. Turn them over and bake for another 10-15 minutes until crisp! Malahide camera club exhibition

The Official Opening of the fourth successive photographic exhibition of Malahide Camera Club will take place in the Parish Pastoral Centre, Main St, Malahide, on Friday 10th February, at 7pm. We are honoured that the Official Opening will be performed by Michael O’Sullivan, FIPF, FRPS, President of the Irish Photographic Federation, to which Malahide Camera Club is affiliated. Our exhibition will take place again this year in the local Parish Pastoral Centre, adjacent to the St Sylvester’s Parish Church, in the Main Street in Malahide. This is a superb community facility, which makes an outstanding exhibition centre, and we are delighted to

display our images here in the heart of the Malahide Community. A total of 139 images will be exhibited, displaying a variety of genres of photography that we feel will delight, stimulate and move our viewers. Of significant interest this year is that there is a particular emphasis on images of Fingal. The exhibition is testimony to the close partnership and cooperation that have always existed between Malahide Camera Club and the local community. Malahide Camera Club, through its annual fund-raising venture, has raised much needed and appreciated funds for the local community down through the years. The local community, in turn, has always been only too willing to support Malahide Camera Club in its many artistic, creative and photographic ventures and achievements. Malahide Camera Club, founded in 1995, continues to grow into

one of the most prestigious and successful camera clubs in Ireland. We meet every Thursday night in the Grand Hotel, Malahide and have over one hundred members, many of whom have received prestigious awards at home and abroad in recognition of their exceptional artistic abilities. Fingal County Council played an important role in supporting the foundation and development of our club over twenty years ago, and we are pleased that we still receive their ongoing support and assistance. This year we are delighted to have received funding from the Council, recognising the importance of the arts in helping to develop healthy and vibrant communities. The exhibition will be open to the public from 12 noon on Saturday 11 February until Sunday 26 February 2017.
