Butler wants free wifi across Fingal in 2018

Lecture 8pm, Wednesday, January 10th. Garry Ahern will present a talk on the adventurous life of

‘Captain Paddy Saul, Irish Aviation Pioneer’. At a recent meeting of Fingal County Council, Cllr Butler asked about the possibility of free public wifi being rolled out in 2018 across Fingal. In reply the Council said it is currently developing a plan for the rollout of free public Wifi across the towns and villages in Fingal. They said it is planned to commence this rollout in 2018. The rollout of public WiFi will take place in conjunction with the implementation of the National Broadband Plan. As part of the rollout the Council intends to apply for funding under the forthcoming WiFi4EU initiative once the call for applications is announced.

Captain J.P. Saul, a Dubliner, (who spent his earliest years in Malahide), was navigator of the ‘Southern Cross’ on its historic trans-Atlantic flight from Portmarnock Beach in 1930. As a young mariner, he sailed the seven seas, later serving in WW I & WW II. Turning to aviation, he headed Air Traffic Control, at Foynes, at Shannon Airport, and in Dublin. A keen angler, he headed the Irish Federation of Sea-Anglers and was regarded as its father-figure.

The Liam Rodgers Community Centre was launched by Mayor of Fingal Cllr Mary McCamley at Kinsealy in Swords on Friday, December 8. The Community Centre was approved in 2012 and is named after local community activist Liam Rodgers, who died in 2009 following a battle with cancer. Mr Rodgers had campaigned for many years alongside the Kinsealy Melrose residents’ association for the existence of a community centre and continued to do so up until six weeks before passing away. The Community Centre will include a sports hall along with meeting rooms that will cater to the various youth clubs, ladies’ clubs, seniors groups, residents’ associations and more. Speaking at the launch, Mayor McCamley said: “I am delighted to launch the Liam Rodgers centre today. After many years of planning and campaigning, I am very happy to see Mr Rodgers’ dream being realised. Community Centres offer varying and extremely important services to locals of all ages and backgrounds. Not only do they provide a venue for sports clubs and community meetings, they offer a social outlet that many in our community value and depend on. I look forward to seeing the projects and events that will be organised and held in this centre in the coming years.”

Fingal remembers -2018-2023 – Can you help? 1916 Commemoration

Fingal County Council is developing a Commemorations Programme for the period 2018-2023, when there will be many aspects of our past which need to be remembered and commemorated. These may form part of the Decade of Centenaries in which we will remember significant historical events that took

place between 1918 and 1923, or may relate to other aspects of Fingal’s history and heritage. The Council is now embarking on a consultation process so that the people of Fingal can have their say on what we should remember and commemorate. This process will also encourage a discussion on how such

commemorations can develop a deeper and more lasting engagement with our past. We are looking for your input in suggesting events, persons and themes we should remember between 2018 and 2023. This public consultation process will run until Monday 15th January 2018 and your input is vital for its success. The Fingal Commemoration Programme 2018-2023 aims to: • Reflect the results of the public consultation process now being undertaken by the Council. • Set out the events, persons and themes which Fingal County Council will prioritise for commemoration during the period 2018-2023 • Outline ideas for, and methods of, remembering and commemoration which groups across Fingal may wish to apply to their own commemorative aims during this period. • Detail the supports the Council aims to provide to local groups and organisations wishing to develop a commemorative event or endeavour during the period 2018-2023. The Council also encourages ideas and suggestions for commemoration from outside the Irish experience reflecting the fact that Fingal is one of the most diverse counties in Ireland with residents from many different countries.

Budgeting Smarter for the new year How to be in better control of your money improve how much you have left over each month: Carefully study 3 months’ bank statements. Make sure that you can account for every single transaction. On a regular basis, I encounter people who have been paying for things that they should not be. Direct debits they forgot to cancel. Subscriptions no longer relevant. Doubling up on things like house insurance (happens a lot!). Make a detailed list for grocery shopping (and don’t shop while hungry). This leads to only buying what you actually need, a lower bill at the till and less throwing out of food gone off. Also, check your receipt after going through the till. “Accidental” over-charging is far more prevalent than you may realise. (Since I began keeping record, one store has overcharged me 65 times!) Compare before you shop for larger items. Just because one store has a fridge you want reduced from €950 to €850 in their “Sale”, does not mean another store nearby that does not currently have a sale on, is not selling the same one for €799. A little research can produce big savings. Compare utility providers. Whether it’s electricity, gas, broadband, mobile phone service or similar, there can be substantial savings to be had by switching to better deals. Check when car/house insurance renewals arrive. Don’t automatically accept a renewal premium without checking around. A few phone calls could save you hundreds of euro. Review premiums on life cover/mortgage protection. Especially if you arranged it directly with a bank or insurance company that could only quote you for their products. Massive savings can be made doing this, as you pay for them over such a long period.

As a new year commences in Malahide, many people consider how they can do some things better than they did last year. Every choice you make, every activity you do, every change you contemplate, are in some way connected to your finances. You have income. You have expenditure. The aim is that the first one is always greater than the second, that leaves you with “disposable income”. For most people, the income side is relatively constant. So how can you improve the amount you have left over? On the spending side. The first thing to realise is that most people don’t accurately know the full details of their expenditure. They’ll know some of the main 8

and regular ones, but not all. You can test this by trying to list everything that you spent last month, then look at what you actually spent. They will rarely match. (Think of the last time you took €50 out of an ATM and bought a bottle of wine, for example. What did the rest of the €50 go on?) So the first step is to undertake a strict monitoring of spending for a month. Every cent spent on anything, whether cash, cards or direct debit. Log it every evening. After a month, you’ll have something to work with. The first thing you will usually notice is that you spent money on things that you really did not need to (and often wish you hadn’t!) This can help moving forward with reducing spending. But what else can you do? A few tips to cut spending further and hence,

EIB loan could trigger €180m investment in Fingal Fingal County Council received an early Christmas present when they signed a €70million Framework Loan Agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) which will trigger a €180million investment in strategic infrastructure projects within the county’s Capital Development Plan. This represents the first EIB support for county-wide investment in partnership with an Irish local authority for more than a decade. and will enable a step-change in economic growth prospects for Fingal which has Ireland’s fastest growing and youngest population. The Framework Loan Agreement with EIB will give Fingal County Council the capacity to borrow €70million over the next five years and this will be invested in capital projects in areas such as: Transport, connectivity and housing land activation,Enterprise development and job creation including development of new industrial sites,Tourism promotion and visitor attractions including investment in historic properties and cycleways, Social and cultural facilities including libraries and facilities for the arts and Environmental investment EIB President Werner Hoyer and Vice President Andrew McDowell joined Mayor of Fingal Cllr Mary McCamley and Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid at a special ceremony in County Hall, Swords, on December 7 and signed the Framework Loan Agreement.

Fingal CC wins Business Award

Fingal County Council was given an award for their work with home-grown businesses and generating Foreign Direct Investment at the InBusiness Awards on Wednesday, December 6. Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid and Councillor Jimmy Guerin accepted the award on behalf of Fingal at the sixth InBusiness Awards ceremony at the Westin Hotel in Dublin. He said, “ We have a highly educated, skilled and diverse population and workforce who with the right resources and supports can contribute hugely to progressing Fingal..” Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Mary McCamley welcomed the award: “We have many innovative and enterprising business people who contribute to employment, tourism and the economy across Fingal and in many cases further afield too. 1700 students from 34 Fingal schools ran the final mile of a marathon in Morton Stadium as part of the MarathonKids Programme being implemented by Fingal County Council on Thursday, December 1. The fifth and sixth class students ran a total of 25.2 miles during group training sessions over an eight week period. To complete the

marathon distance, they ran a full mile at Morton Stadium together. On reaching the finish line, the runners were congratulated and presented with a medal by International Olympic Athlete, David Gillick. Also waiting at the finish line to present the runners with their medals were Fingal County

Personal Insolvency Arrangements work and can return people to solvency while keeping the family home. A PIA or insolvency is not bankruptcy, it comes before bankruptcy and it is a better solution than bankruptcy for both the borrower and the banks in most cases. The courts have approved thousands of insolvency arrangements since the legislation became effective. PIAs work exactly the same and on the exact same basis for the ordinary family home borrower with €250,000 worth of debt as they do for a debtor who has millions of euro of debt. If you are unable to meet your financial commitments (including the mortgage on your family home) as and when they fall due, you are insolvent and eligible to make an application for a PIA. The sooner you contact a Personal Insolvency Practitioner (PIP) the better. The PIP will advise you of your options and assist you in completing your prescribed financial statement and PIA application form. Sports grants bring seasonal joy to Malahide clubs Six sporting organisations in the Malahide area are celebrating and not just because this is a new year, for just before Christmas clubs across the Fingal region the received much needed Sports Capital Grants from the Government, after the fund was almost doubled this year. Some 48 Fingal clubs collected over €3.7 million from this preChristmas bonanza funding everything from pitch development to sports equipment and clubhouse refurbishment and developments. In this area, over Malahide Basketball Club received €2,356 for refurbishment of their dressing rooms. Malahide Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club received €123,000 for new LED floodlights on nine courts with new fencing and nets. Malahide Rugby Football Club received €150,000 for an indoor gym. Malahide Sea Scouts Ltd received €73,167 for new equipment. Malahide United Association Football Club received €150,000 for an new all-weather pitch and Malahide Yacht Club received €61,200 for essential rescue equipment. Reacting to the Fingal allocation from the grants, Senator James Reilly welcomed the funding and said: ‘As a former Minister who set up the national programme, Health Ireland, I am delighted that the Fine Gael Government continue to invest in sporting facilities for Fingal.’ He called on future funding from the Sports Capital Grants programme for a planned ‘sports hub’ in Donabate and to develop at least one municipal swimming pool to serve populations in Swords and Balbriggan.”

Malahide Castle – a jewel in the east

Malahide Castle has a long and rich history, spanning over 800 years with the Talbot family. The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century. The building was notably enlarged in the reign of Edward IV, and the towers added circa 1600-1650. The estate survived such losses as the Battle of the Boyne and the Penal Laws. It was home to the Talbot family for almost 800 years (1185 to 1975). Among the family members were noted statesmen, churchmen and scholars and one great member of the family, Sir John Talbot known as Lord Furnival, was immortalized in Shakespeare’s play ‘Henry VI’. Thirty individual Talbots had their seat at Malahide, from the first Lord Richard Talbot to Lord Milo Talbot, the 7th Baron, who died in 1973 Richard Talbot came with Henry II to Ireland in 1174 and was given the grant of Malahide. In 1286, a further Richard de Talbot, grandson of the original grantee, granted all lordships, escheats, reliefs and marriages to King Edward and settled the manor of Malahide on his son, Milo. Milo the 7th Lord Talbot de Malahide carried out some modernising alterations to the castle after his retirement from British Diplomatic Service. He also created the Talbot Botanic Garden after inheriting property in 1948. Malahide Castle and Demesne was eventually inherited by the seventh Baron Talbot and on his death in 1973, passed to his sister, Rose. In 1975, Rose sold the castle to the Irish State, partly to fund inheritance taxes. Many of the contents, notably furnishings, of the castle, had been sold in advance, leading to considerable public controversy, but private and governmental parties were able to retrieve some. Rose Talbot, one of the last surviving members of the Talbot family died at Malahide House, Tasmania in 2009. A guided tour of this magnificent castle is highly recommended but visitors must purchase or collect pre-paid tickets from the Admission Desk in the Visitor Centre at the Courtyard prior their tour. The tours operate Monday to Sunday all year round.

St Pats minors win league in thriller

St Pats ended their year on a high note with their Minor Lads winning the League Final 1-11 to 1-10 against a quality Fingal Ravens side. There wasn’t much to separate the teams all game and the tight score reflects a tight match. In fact it seemed as if the game would be heading into extra time when they scored the winner in injury time. The level of football played and the amount of supporters there on a bitterly cold wet Sunday morning bodes well for these young men and the club in general. At the younger end of the Club, the Academy has finished for the Christmas break. They were delighted to have a special visitor to cheer them on for the final Saturday. Santa was very impressed with all the Donabate Portrane boys & girls and how well they’re listening to their coaches. The Club is extremely lucky to have so many teenage volunteer Cinnires who work at the Academy, Cul Camps, Easter Camps & Mini All Ireland. It’s a well known facet of the GAA & LGFA to give back to your Club; it’s truly taken to heart in St Pats where they are very fortunate to have such a great spirit in the Club. • 120g Oats • 130g Milled flaxseed/linseed (See mixes with seeds/fruit in most supermarkets) • 120g Mixed nuts • 2 Eggs • 2 Bananas • 150g Plain yogurt • 30g Honey • 2 teaspoons Cinnamon • 100g Raisins • 50g Dates, finely chopped • 100g pecans, chopped

Method “Many of you will have heard the phrase or indeed have used it yourself ‘New year new you’. This often comes down to our health and in order to make these ‘new’ changes last we need to make them habit. One healthy habit is having breakfast and kick starting your metabolism and energy levels for the day. 1 in 3 of us in Ireland skip breakfast and on average it takes just 9 minutes to make a healthy breakfast. A quick solution could be to pre-make a batch of these super easy muffins below so that you can bring them with you on the journey and have them on the go Pre-heat oven to 180’c. Method: 1. Mash the bananas and mix with the 2 cracked eggs in a bowl. 2. Blitz the oats in a blender and add to the egg and banana. 3. Blitz the mixed nuts in a blender and add to the mixture. 4. Add the cinnamon, flaxseed, honey and yogurt to the mixture and mix well together. 5. Finally add the raisins, chopped dates and pecans. 6. Scoop the mixture into muffin cases on a tray and pop into the oven at 160’c for 30minutes. 7.Store in an airtight container for up to 6 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Change it up for variety and substitute 100g of other nuts/seeds or dried fruits to suit your tastes and preferences!!!
