Happy Easter to everyone from the Locals Team! We are so thankful we seem to be beginning to enjoy life again. What a wonderful proper St Patrick’s Day we had for the first time in two years. Children and community groups and clubs right across Fingal put on fantasic parades of floats in their areas. . Bands from all over Fingal and the country entertained us and even the weather stayed good as we were rewarded with the smiles of the children dressed appropriately for the day. No other place in the world celebrates their patron saint’s day like we do, with the marching bands, the sea of green, the music, and the joy of the spectacular parades which are the envy of the world. However there has been a rise in the Covid admissions to hospital recently and we have to realise we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of variants of Covid 19 nationwide if we don’t continue to take care. Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public places, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past two years. We should remember the local shops and enterprises who went above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly during the lockdown and now it is time to give something back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print over the past few months. Lets shop local, support our carers and HSE frontline staff and all stay safe, enjoy our Easter eggs, and keep smiling ! Happy Easter from The Locals Team.

it is great to see so many local residents and groups along with so many local councillors which shows their commitment to their local constituents.” Over 100 people registered for the ‘Shine a Light’ event and many more people engaged in all of our International Women’s day events this week which is great to see. The Community Development team has been working hard on getting back out and engaging with local communities and groups and developing community initiatives. Council Works Programmes for Lusk in 2022 At the Area Operations Meeting Councillor Rob O’Donoghue warmly welcomed the inclusion of funding to be spent on road and active travel infrastructure in the coming calendar year in the Lusk area. He commented, ‘I am delighted with that the works that have been included and will be pushing for other areas in the town that need attention to be considered for upgrade through other funding streams.’ Works listed under the 2022 Programme of Works include footpath upgrades at Treen Hill and Dun Emer, road resurfacing of Hannah’s Avenue, drainage works on Ministers Road/ Hands Lane, lighting on Hands Lane and the installation of additional footpaths through the Orlynn Park

Green Space. In addition, over €500k has been earmarked through the Capital Roads Programme for the upgrading of the R132 and as part of the NTA’s Allocation for Active Travel Projects, Ministers Road to Blakes Cross and Kilhedge Lane have had funding allocated for the construction of new protected cycle lanes and Safe Routes to School at Corduff National School. Cllr O’Donoghue stated that ‘detailed design has been carried out on this stretch of cycleway and this design is currently under review by our Active Travel Engineering Team in FCC. I am pleased to see that this project is included on our works programme for delivery later this year.’

Easter Egg Hunt and a Salt Cave!

By Siobhan O’Neill White Thinking of organising an Easter egg hunt for your little ones? It doesn’t have to be EGGstravagant but with a little effort, you can make it really fun!We like to create riddles for our children to solve, to find the eggs and treats we have dotted around the house and garden. And if it rains, don’t worry because you can do it all indoors! All you need is chocolate and imagination! Here are a few ideas for riddles and hiding places:• In the place you sit down, look for chocolate upside down (under the sofa!) • Where you lay your sleepy head, find a yummy treat instead (inside their pillowcases) • Inside the pots and pans, rummage around with your hands (choc eggs in pots/pans)

• Where we block the daylight out, is a treat for you to scout (behind the curtains) • School is out for 2 whole weeks but check your schoolbag for scrummy treats • Where dirty clothes are made clean, look near the washing machine! (laundry basket)Dealz have easter eggs from €1.50, ideal for egg hunts. They also have Easter decorations to pop up around the house. Dunnes Stores have fab Easter decorations too, such as pastel coloured wreaths. The Works stores have ‘Colour your own’ Easter egg hunt bags and Easter eggs kits, which are ideal for rainy days for keeping kids busy whilst using their imagination. We recently held our 2 nd AGM and wish to thank everyone who attended. LAG is proud to be a voice for the people of Lusk and will continue to do our best to help shape how Lusk develops for the benefit of us all. After two years of being the main driving force behind the LAG we wish to thank Lynne Barker, who is stepping down as Chair of the group in keeping with our constitution, for all that she has done and the selfless dedication that she has demonstrated for the benefit of our town. Lusk appreciates you and all that you have done on our behalf Lynne. Our new Chairperson will be Colin Browne and Lynne will remain on our committee and continue to be an active part of the group. With our proposed Summer Festival having received approval from Fingal Co Co, we now need help from the community to make

it happen. We will need musicians, entertainers, people to help with the multicultural section, people to give a few hours to help marshal the event and financial support (keep an eye on our FB page for further details). Style Warriors Fashion now at Ardgillan Castle

By Fashion Editor Carina Cunningham Well, she’s back again after the two-year restrictions! Carina Cunningham of Style Warriors Fashion and Entertainment Show has a new venture. Carina is now assisting new and older modelling enthusiasts, who are looking to explore the fashion world. From vintage to movie star, burlesque to lingerie, debs’ dresses to communion, period to gothic, wedding to evening wear – she has it all. Carina has an extensive wardrobe collection available for photo shoots and for hire. She has been creating period costumes and hats in Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan in her new studio: Style Warriors Dreamscape Room 102. She shares the beautiful surroundings of the castle with fellow artists, who also display their

skills in their own studios at the castle. Studios for visual artists, potters, ceramicists and jewellers have been open since June of last year where the artists and crafters freely meet and greet both the public and tourists seven days a week. This venture came to life with Argillan Castle Manager Tom Reilly’s vision and the support of Fingal County Council and the Ardgillan Castle Board of Management. On the 15th of May, Ardgillan Castle will be hosting a wedding fair and Carina will be looking for models to join the team for a fashion show on the day and learn a little about what it’s like being a model. There will be a model casting day held in the castle, a bootcamp day and then the fashion show on the

day of the wedding fair. Anyone who is interested – please contact Carina on her Facebook page. Stands of local wedding suppliers will also feature on the day. The castle itself is a venue for civil ceremonies. And now brides can avail of the in-house vintage wedding décor that is available to couples planning their weddings at Ardgillan. Mags Morgan with her divine Mizz Rio wedding collections will share the catwalk with Carina at the fair.Casting day and bootcamp dates will be announced shortly. On the wedding fair day, 24 models’ names will go into a hat with the winner getting a free photoshoot from Carina!

Why don’t we consider the bad stuff? By Dave Kavanagh It’s human nature to want good things to happen to us and conversely, for bad things not to happen to us. A constant example I see of this, is the vast amounts of money that is spent on the lotto every week, despite the odds of winning the jackpot of 10.7million to 1, compared to the numerous people I talk to that have no preparations in place, for the potential financial loss in the event of a serious illness or even a fatality. Considering that in Ireland, you have a 1 in 4 chance of developing one of the conditions covered before age 65, and, according to one of the main life companies’ claim statistics for 2021, 32% of their death claims were under age 60. The difference between how people affected by such occurrences will be impacted financially, is usually dependent on how people have planned and prepared. Of course we don’t want bad suff to happen, but it happens frequently whether we want it to or not. (Exponentially more frequently than the aforementioned lotto jackpot wins!) Whenever I talk to people who have just reviewed their own individual circumstances and put appropriate plans in place, they talk about the “peace of mind” that this gives them and the fact that it is one less thing to worry about now that they are up to date with the knowledge that sufficient cover is now in place to prevent any

major financial loss, should one of those “bad things” happen. It requires a conscious act of making the time to look at your own situation and finding out the levels and types of cover that are suitable and affordable for you. A simple phone call or email may be all you need to get started and having one less thing for you to worry about.

Lusk Community Council Raises Flag For Ukraine As the Covid pandemic fades into our history, Europe and the World is facing a new crisis with Russia’s war on Ukraine. The news stories and images of Ukrainians fighting for their country’s independence is a story that Ireland is all too familiar with, however the scale of the Ukrainian crisis is beyond belief. As we welcome many Ukrainians to our country, we still ask ourselves how can we help? On the 12th March Lusk Community Council raised the Ukrainian Flag over its 1916 Memorial as a symbol of friendship between our countries. We were honoured that a recent emigrant from Ukraine, Svitlana Turlo, raised the Ukrainian Flag in Lusk. As a further sign of our shared friendship, we presented Ireland’s Tricolor to Svitlana. In a truly inspirational

speech, Svitlana committed to fly Ireland’s national flag in Ukraine, when she gets to return to her home. The relevance of the 1916 Proclamation was aligned with the modern day crisis by Councillor Cathal Boland, when he recited a section of the Proclamation and inter-changed Irish references to Ukrainian references as follows: “ We place the cause of the Ukrainian Republic under the protection of the Most High God. Whose blessing we invoke upon our arms and we pray that no one who serves that cause will dishonour it by cowardice, inhumanity, or rapine. In this supreme hour the Ukrainian nation must, by its valour and discipline, and by the readiness of its children to sacrifice themselves for the common good, prove itself worthy of the august destiny to which it is called.”

Cultural Centre in Lusk awarded €48,600 Fingal County Council welcomes the award of €48,600 in new funding for the Cultural Centre project in Lusk. The funding is provided by the Department of Rural and Community Development under the 2021 Town and Village Renewal Scheme Project Development Measure. The funding is aimed at helping communities through the planning and identification of enhancements in public spaces together with an emphasis on supporting remote working options in rural communities. Fingal County Council looks forward to working with Lusk Community Council in the delivery of the project which will benefit the wider community in Lusk and surrounding areas. The funding is provided to conduct preliminary site investigation works and planning studies to facilitate

the advancement of a Phase Two Development of the Lusk Cultural Centre project to planning and construction stages. Welcoming the announcement of the new funding by the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphries, TD, the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Seána Ó Rodaigh, said, “I welcome the announcement from the Minister. Funding from the Town and Village Renewal Scheme to help progress worthwhile projects is very helpful in the ongoing enhancement of the public realm in the county.” The Town and Village Renewal Scheme is provided through the Department of Rural and Community Development to promote rural and community development and to support vibrant, inclusive and sustainable communities throughout Ireland.

News & Events 600 compete at Lusk AC 4 Mile race It has been a very busy and successful February and March for Lusk Athletic Club as our Juvenile and master’s athletes competed Indoors in Abbotstown and Athlone in various Track and Field events with great success. Lusk AC athletes also competed in cross country in Dunleer on what was a memorable day for the horrible weather conditions, on the road at the Dungarvan 10 Mile and we had an amazing 33 athletes run the Bohermeen Half Marathon on the 13th March. Sunday 6th March saw the welcome return of the LUSK 4 Mile race with close to 600 runners taking part on what was a fantastic day for the club. Lusk AC had close to 60 members running the race and another 100 members volunteering to ensure the race went smoothly. The club received many compliments on the great hospitality afforded to all competitors and on the excellent Medal, T-Shirt and goodie bag for all finishers. Lusk AC would like to thank everybody who helped with the race, the local community, race sponsors and most especially the athletes who came and ran the race.

In recent months our National Governing Body , Taekwondo Ireland, in conjunction with Junsa Taekwondo and other member clubs have put together a series of small tournaments for beginners right through to the higher grades. As an NGB we are starting to focus on the grass roots players and hopefully future Olympians. Have a look at our clubs competition preparations here! Junsa Taekwondo train in the Lusk scout den three times a week and we have Specific classes for each age group and also programs that suit everyone. At the moment our beginner and intermediate classes only have a few spaces and the advanced is filling up fast.Please contact Master Stuart Russell for further class details. We hope that everyone had a well deserved St. Patrick’s holiday and are all looking forward to Easter.
