Over the past 2 years we have come through a lot. We have come through and are going through lockdowns and curfews. We have been asked to isolate if we have been in touch with our family and friends who have tested positive and we have been told we must ‘elbow greet’ instead of hug those we love and meet. However all of these restrictions have been imposed in a loving way by our Government to try and keep us safe and healthy. It has also been recommended by Health experts that we have no less than three vaccinations to date. This has all been proposed to try and keep our loved ones safe and healthy and to try and safeguard our elderly and our future generations. This Valentine’s Day will be yet another one unlike others we had gotten used to, whether we are teenage lovers or more mature partners. However that does not mean that we cannot show love to those who mean the most to us. Remember. chocolate shops, florists and restaurants and hotels are all open (at the time of going to press) Unlike any other period in history we have the means to stay in touch and communicate without meeting in person, whether that be through a mobile phone call or Facetime or Zoom or whatever technology we have at hand. The worldwide communications structure is so vast now that we need never feel alone and can send messages of love and support to those we care most about. We should also all shop locally and ensure the local jobs of our neighbours and friends. We all know the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others. Community transfer of the Omicron variant of the virus seems to be the problem so lets not go back to meeting numbers of people and lets be careful and safe. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible. We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together once again as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as soon as possible and stay safe and enjoy our lives while being responsible. So please, obey the rules, stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all our families and those we love.

FBD Young Farmer of the Year Award 2021

Congratulations to Lusk farmer Shane Halpin who won “Other Enterprises” category (Horticulture) at the FBD Young Farmer of the Year Awards 2021 in association with Macra na Feirme in partnership with the IFA. The competition was first launched in 1999 and and has been successful in raising the profile of young farmers within their community by recognising their achievements and contribution to farming.. Shane graduated from Technological University Dublin with a degree in Horticulture. He always had an interest in farming from a very young age, he gained this 4

interest from his grandad and his uncles at their farm in Lusk, he spent all his school holidays working with them. Shane also spent some time working on farms in New Zealand and the USA to gain further experience.Shane started Welgro Produce which is located in Rush, Co. Dublin along with Sean and Gary Weldon in 2020. Welgro is one of only two commerical cucumber growers in Ireland. The company employs up to 15 people at peak times in the areas of grading/ picking/packing and distribution. Their company recently won “The Irish Newbie new entrant

competition” in association with Teagasc. They were also featured on RTE’s “Ear To The Ground” program recently. Shane is also a member of The North County Dublin Macra na Feirme. Shane made it into the final five of the Young Farmer of the Year Award 2021 by winning his category. The awards were announced on December 17th at an event which was streamed live on Macra Na Feirme’s Facebook page and zoom. Lusk Community Council Planning for St. Patrick’s Day As we crystal ball gaze over coming months, we must also start planning for what we know. St. Patrick’s Festival will provide an opportunity for the community to celebrate our National Holi-day and while we don’t yet know what that will look like, we are starting to plan for the day, in the hope that Lusk will be able to have its traditional parade. Come what may, the Community Coun-cil will look to brighten up the town with banners and bunting. We will have the Round Tower il-luminated again for the festival and all going well, we will have a real life parade on the streets of Lusk. We are encouraging every household to play their part by flying flags and bunting across the town for St. Patrick’s Festival. If everyone makes an little effort, it will lift the spirits of the town and in the light of the last two Covid years, this will be much needed. Lusk Community Clean-Up, organized by Willie McGee, is one such example of a bunch of volunteers making a big difference with the appearance of the town. Willie particularly wants to give a shout out to Lusk Community College students for taking part in the Clean-Up.The Fingal Development Plan Review is ongoing with motions being proposed by Councillors in recent weeks. The Draft Fingal Development Plan will be on public display for a period of 10 weeks from February 2022 to May 2022. This will be your opportunity to comment on the plan and to review what is being proposed. In the context of the Development Plan Review we have delayed the first meeting of the Lusk Vision 2030 Imple-mentation Group to February. 2022 is looking good so far. Let’s hope it continues.

Lusk Tidy Towns Committee are delighted that our markings in the National Tidy Towns Competition went up by 5 points despite all the building works in Lusk. Thank you to everyone who supported our Christmas Card Launch and to those who purchased the card and calendar. It is now 30 years of producing cards, and a book will be produced of the

cards and verses written by local residents and photographers. Wishing everyone a very happy healthy new year.. Also this month Lusk Tidy Towns are very proud of the work they carry out on behalf of this community. Valentine’s Day Romantic Rawlos Try these for a tasty, romantic Valentine’s day or an any day treat. Blitzing up dates in a little bit of water turns them into a melt in the mouth healthier caramel!!! Add nut butter and you’re packing in protein and healthy fats (which we need in small amounts!) Smoother them in dark chocolate and you’re reaping all those beautiful cocoa benefits!! The great thing is even though they are so delicious, they are very filling so you won’t scoff them down as you might do with a normal pack of Rolo’s.Plus they are SOOO simples to make! 12

Ingredients

(Makes 12 ‘Rawlos’) • 60g Dates in 1-2 tablespoons water • 140g Almond butter (or a nut/seed butter of your choice!) • 50g Dark chocolate (AT least 70% cocoa)

Method 1. Having soaked the dates in a small amount of water overnight, mash them up. If they don’t mash up easily, heat them gently in the microwave/hob. 2.Add the nut/seed butter to the mashed dates and mix well. 3. Roll into balls and freeze for 1 hour.

4.Melt dark chocolate. Coat the balls in the dark chocolate and freeze for 20minutes. See how long they can last melting in your mouth without you gobbling up their gooey centre and crisp chocolate shell!!!!

Fingal Community Groups invited to apply for Community Activities Funding

Community and voluntary groups in Fingal are invited to apply for funding under the 2022 Community Activities Fund.The Community Activities Fund (CAF) is a once-off fund that provides grants to assist community and voluntary groups with facilities upgrades, equipment purchase and running costs. The CAF is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development with Fingal allocated €301,042 in funding for groups across the county. The CAF is administered by Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs) in each Local Authority area. It is part of the wider Community Enhancement Programme, which has funded over 8,000 projects in urban and rural communities throughout Ireland since first being

launched in 2018. Applications are now being sought from community and voluntary groups in Fingal for grants up to a maximum of €15,000 with a closing date for applications of Friday, February 18, 2022 at 6:00 pm. Commenting on the announcement, AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council said: “The work of the community and voluntary sector is highly valued by Fingal County Council. The Community Activities Fund will assist community groups with the valuable work they do within our communities. I would advise community groups to examine the CAF and avail of the opportunity to apply for funding if it is relevant to their activities.” Declan Ryan, Chief Officer of the Fingal Local Community

Development Committee added: “The Community Activities Fund comes from within the Community Enhancement Programme group of funds. These funds have been availed of widely by community groups in Fingal in recent years, which has resulted in valuable funding being distributed to groups in disadvantaged areas in particular. The new CAF has the added benefit of allowing applications for both capital costs and operating costs. This added flexibility is very welcome. Improve your health, improve your wealth! By Dave Kavanagh Another start of a year and despite Covid 19 still present, many people will still be intent on embarking on making some positive changes or improvements in their lives. The most recognisable of these is the ‘losing weight” one. It’s worth noting that if done properly, losing weight can have the added bonus of leaving you with more money at the end of each month. So how does that work? Well, by “doing it properly” I refer to NOT going on a diet, or buying products with magic properties that will make the weight just fall off. Instead, making small, sustainable lifestyle changes. It can be adding some exercise in week 1, drinking more water (and less alcohol/ sugar laden drinks) in week 2, reducing portion sizes in week 3, substituting things like chips for wholegrain rice or pasta in week 4, breaking the association of biscuits/cakes whenever you have a coffee or tea in week 5, etc., etc. Doing it this way, makes it sustainable and when weight is dropped slower over a longer period of time, it is far more likely to be kept off. So how does that improve your wealth? When I analyse people’s spending budgets, it’s clear that takeaways, alcohol, sweets, cakes biscuits etc., pop up quite frequently. If you keep track of the savings when you cut down on many of these things, it’s easy to see how much you can save. Keeping a detailed spending budget

where you log every day what you spend (not just the name of the shop, but the actual items) Lets you look back and accurately see what you have spent on the things you actually want to cut down on (one person told me “I can’t believe I ate 38 packets of crisps last month!!”) As for the xmas leftover junk, it can either go in the waste or on your waist. Make the right choices, one day at a time, and you bank account will thank you.

News & Events Lusk AC – Races, and Training programmes 2022 Lusk Athletic Club are looking forward to an exciting 2022 with all our adult and juvenile members with plenty of new PBs and more “Real events” to take part in. 2021 ended with a charity run on St Stephens Day where the club raised €700 for the local Lusk Community Unit. We then had two club races on the 28thDecember, the Holly Berry 10K won by Daniel O’Brien and the Turkey Trot 5K won by Sheila Bourke. Thanks to all who turned up to run or volunteer, we had a great turnout including a large group of friends from Balbriggan Runners who took part. On the 9th January 2022 the Dublin Master cross country championship races took place in St Annes Park, Raheny and Lusk Athletic Club were well represented in both the men’s and ladies’ races. Great running by all our athletes against the best master’s athletes from all the other Dublin athletics clubs. Lusk Athletic Club started another Fit4Life and Fit4Youth training programme on Tuesday 18th January. Our friendly coaches will continue help you to complete a Parkrun 5K after just 8 weeks training in a fun, relaxed environment. **New members always welcome to the Hub, Rathmore Road any Tuesday or Thursday 6.45 PM**registration is now open at luskathleticclub.ie and on the Myrunresults website. Junsa Taekwondo Club News Grading Day at Junsa Taekwondo recently! Recently Junsa Taekwondo held their first grading of 2022 in their new training venue, the Lusk Scout Hall. The new hall is a fantastic venue for our sport and we were made feel very welcome by everyone in the 153rd scout group. The club grading was a fantastic success with all students passing and attaining their grade with some double grade’s on the day. Our photos show some of our students on the day.
