Our best resolution – stay safe and give hope! As we start a new year we look back on the past 22 months or so and realise we have come through a lot as a county and as a country. We have come through and are going through on and off partial lockdowns. We have gotten used to mask wearing, social distancing and elbow greeting instead of hugging those we love when we meet. However all of these restrictions have been imposed in a loving way by our Government to try and keep us safe and healthy. In the year ahead we usually look forward and make plans and resoltions but this year after so many set backs we must be ultra careful. At this time the best resolution greatest gifts we can give each other is hope. So let us all work together to support each other. Let us stop worrying about the current hospital figures and work together to spread hope to our families, hope to our friends and hope to our communities for a brighter future. Let us all pull together, lets all obey the Government rules and continue to flatten the Covid 19 curve again.We should alsuo all shop locally and ensure the local jobs of our neighbours and friends. By now we all know the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others. Recently it has become obvious that the rise in Covid cases is due to community transfer of the virus. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible.We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together now as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to a near normal society as soon as possible and stay safe and enjoy our lives while being responsible. So please,in the coming months obey the rules, stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all our families and those we love. Successful Lusk ICA Christmas Market

Lusk ICA held their Christmas Market last month. There

was a great selection of stalls both inside and outside the

Scout Den. We had some lovely food and craft stalls and

everyone had a great time. Thanks to everyone who supported the market, it was a wonderful way to start the Christmas festivities. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year.

Happy new year from lusk action group Happy New year! We look back at Lusk’s progress and look forward to changes in the coming year. In LAG’s 2020 online community survey, and in the comprehensive Lusk Vision 2030 survey, it was abundantly clear that there is a huge need for facilities and activities for our young people. We conducted a Youth survey in 2021, from which we gained a clear picture of the needs of our young people. We will use this information to help us to bring to life plans for our youth. This will be in line with the Lusk Vision 2030 plan. LAG have had ongoing engagement with Fingal Co Co regarding the programme of works. During the year, we saw road and path improvements, new fencing on the tennis courts, bandstand renovation, new traffic lights and new benches on the ring road among others. It was the largest amount ever spent on Lusk in the programme. We have listened to the community’s feedback on required improvements, and we have requested the majority of these for next year. The support of our committee member, Cllr Rob O’Donoghue makes this happen with far more ease. We have been busy planning a pilot Lusk Summer Festival, so watch this space! We have been planning our biodiversity garden through the year and had a great bunch of volunteers clearing the site in early Autumn. We met with delays due to access issues, however we are hoping to move on with this project quickly.

We submitted a comprehensive document to the Fingal Development Plan and we raised almost €3000 for our Christmas lights, thanks to your generosity, and we have enjoyed them throughout the festive season! We are delighted to be part of the Lusk Vision 2030 Implementation Group and

we look forward to working with other groups in the community to bring the vision to life. Foroige Youth Club is back up and running in the Carnegie Library on Friday nights from 7 till 9. It is fantastically run, and it really needs to be supported. Get in touch with us on 0863017842.

Lusk Men’s Walk & Talk Group every Monday The Lusk Mens walk and talk group meet at the Hub car park at 7:00pm every Monday for their weekly walk. This is open to all men and it’s an opportunity just get out of the house, have a nice walk, clear the head and have a chat if you wish. You can do it as a once off or every week, no joining necessary, just turn up. This group is organised by Ciaran Russell, so if you want to introduce yourself to him and before long you will find you have made new friends. So why not let any friends or neighbours know about it as new members are alaways welcome

Significant LEADER Funding approved for New Projects in Rural Fingal Significant investment has been secured for Fingal projects at the most recent Dublin Rural LEADER Approvals Meeting. The Dublin Rural LEADER Local Action Group, which oversees the Programme in Dublin, approved €230,748.76 in funding for 5 new projects in Rural Dublin at its November Online Meeting. This brings the total number of projects approved during the LEADER Transition Programme to 15 since it began on April 1st, 2021, with a total value of €543,984.52. The approved projects are in the areas of Economic Development, Rural Environment and Social Inclusion. Fingal LEADER Partnership CEO, Eilish Harrington, welcomed the approval of the 5 projects. “All were excellent projects enhancing services in the rural towns and villages of Fingal. It’s great to see communities benefiting from LEADER funding to help develop and grow their amenities, especially during the difficult times we are all currently in. I would encourage more rural communities and businesses to contact LEADER to avail of the remaining funds during the next 14 months.” Amongst the projects approved for funding are: Balbriggan Meals on Wheels which is approved for €24,063.75 for an outdoor dining

area which will be of enormous help to facilitate the provision of meals to their clients in a safe outdoor setting. Donabate Portrane Community Centre CLG which is approved for €24,354.00 for a feasibility study to capture the needs of existing groups that use the facilities to assist and guide them in expanding in line with community needs.Also St Maur’s GAA Club Rush which is approved for €89,154.58 to install rainwater harvesting and irrigation in St Maur’s GAA Club

The Importance of Getting Financial Advice By Dave Kavanagh Recent surveys by the Royal London Group, have clearly illustrated the advantages in seeking fi-nancial advice. In Ireland, it showed that of those that received advice, savings were 55% higher, the average pension pot was €128,933 compared to €62,600 with those who had not sought advice. The vast majority felt more in control of their finances and felt they were getting the best value with the financial products that they paid for. In these times, Covid-19 has made people more anxious about money. So what stops people from seeking advice in such a crucial area of their lives? Some answers were, “I think it would be too expensive”, “it’s probably not for me” (believing it’s only very wealthy people that need advice!), “my bank looks after all of that” (when the bank is likely tied to one company and cannot fairly compare options for them.) Or “too proud or embar-rassed to let someone go through our finances”. In some ways, this can be likened to some people choosing not to seek medical advice (until potentially too late!) believing that it’s trivial or they can deal with it themselves. The one constant I’ve seen in all my years of advising clients, is the peace of mind and feeling of control that they feel. Even if the exercise of examining and analysing their finances uncovers some mistakes or wrong choices, at least they can now

take action to rectify their situation, and move forward with confidence. If, like many, you are considering making New Year changes to improve your life in some way, you could do far worse than include a review of that which is connected to almost every aspect of your life, your finances.

Groups join together for Let’s Play initiative in Rush

Recently Let’s Play Rush was launched with key events aimed at developing a playful culture in the town. The EU initiative sees an URBACT Transfer Network in Ireland sharing good practice in sustainable urban development between cities and towns, with Rush one of five towns learning best practice from lead city Cork on how to develop play and placemaking actions. As part of the initiative, Rush Library hosted Legobuilding sessions for kids aged from 4 – 12 years. Led by Brick4Kidz, the outdoor play sessions paid tribute to the town’s pirate heritage. The event was organised with the help of Rush Community Council and Rush Tidy Towns. Rush Community Centre also sought to help the town’s senior citizens discover their creativity with painting sessions delivered by artist John Carpenter.The events were funded by Creative Ireland and organised by the Let’s Play Rush URBACT Local Group (ULG) whose members are drawn from the Council, Local Councillors, Rush Community Council, Rush Tidy Towns, Fingal LCDC, Fingal CYPSC and Healthy Ireland. Cllr Brian Dennehy, Chair of Rush ULG, said: “Our participation in this URBACT initiative will be a great opportunity to introduce and develop play and placemaking activities in the town. Rush ULG hopes to run a number of events and projects over the next year, bringing play to the fore for people of all ages in Rush and benefiting from the knowledge of our partners in the URBACT network.” Brendan O’Reilly, Chair of Rush Tidy Towns said: “We are very excited to be working with Rush Community Council and Fingal County Council in rolling out this URBACT initiative in Rush through a series of events and projects related to the Playful Paradigm. Our first two events on Saturday 20 November were a great success, with the youth and senior citizens of the town involved.”Aoife Sheridan, Senior Executive Officer, Economic, Enterprise, Tourism and Cultural Development Department, Fingal County Council, said: “The Council is excited to be involved in a second URBACT initiative, with Balbriggan already involved in the Iplace Network. These networks strengthen Fingal’s connections to Europe and provides the Council with an opportunity to learn best practice lessons from its partners. Lusk CC says Goodbye 2021 Hello 2022

In spite of Covid restrictions in 2021, Lusk Community Council embarked on its biggest ever pro-ject on the 4th May with the reopening of construction, the construction of a new Cultural Centre in Lusk. This project is ongoing and we look forward to its completion in May 2022. The comple-tion of Lusk Vision 2030 Plan for Lusk was another pandemic milestone and January 2022 will see the first meeting of the Lusk Vision 2030 Implementation Team, a new cross community group to work on implementing a miriad of projects to improve our town. Let’s also recognise and cele-brate key improvements achieved in 2021. The Fingal County Council programmes delivered a new lighting system in the old graveyard; the restoration of the bandstand on the Green; upgrading the tennis courts in Orlynn Park; footpath upgrades on Church Road / Ministers Road, path and road improvements on Church Road, while Lidl delivered a new retail outlet for the town. These are all very visible improvements, however much work is undertaken that is less visible, the work of the Lusk 2020 Sports Committee being a case in point. The

2020 Sports Committee has continued to work with Fingal County Council throughout 2021 to make further improvements to the phase one Recreational Hub in Lusk, while working to bring the phase two open space in charge from the developer to Fingal County Council. Once in charge the 2020 Sports Committee will be working with Fingal to develop the final Masterplan for the Recreational Hub, taking into account the needs of our schools, our sporting organisations and the public at large. This is the number one priority of the 2020 Sports Committee in 2022 and it will be another exciting project for Lusk. 2022 will be an important year for the next stages in the preparation of the Fingal Development Plan 2023-2029. Please engage in this process. Your input is important. Lusk Community Council wants to recognise all the voluntary work undertaken by countless volunteers across the community, it is very important, as is the work of our Councillors, who seek to make improvements in our town and community. O’Donoghue Welcomes International Dance Championship to Lusk

Cllr O’Donoghue would like to extend the warmest and congratulations and thanks to the Dance Sport Ireland team and Ken Farrell on their recent Fingal International Ballroom and Latin American Classic Dance Championships which took place in the National School Community Hall in Lusk. Dancers from five to 75 years of age took to the floor in a display of athleticism, style and elegance and wowed spectators with their renditions of the foxtrot, tango, jive, paso doble, a variety of waltzes and the cha-cha-cha. In a nail-biting finale, the Irish team beat out the European team in the final round of the international team event by 41 points to 40. Cllr O’Donoghue stated, ‘the whole day has been an incredible success, and I would love to thank organisers for all their efforts in bringing the event to Lusk. The school hall is the perfect venue for the championships and credit should be given to principal Paul Comiskey for facilitating the occasion. Hopefully, we can secure events like this for the town into the future and encourage more people in Lusk to get involved in Ballroom dancing.’ LUSK LOCAL-JANUARY 2022

Home Cook Recipes

Gorgeous Granola Granola can be full of fibre from oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit in addition to lots of vitamins and minerals. However it can also be full of sugar and a lot of granola in Irish supermarkets are quite high in sugar. This homemade recipe for granola below is simple to make. Wholesome and satisfying to have. And it is scrumptious with fresh fruit and natural yogurt or milk for breakfast, supper or as a snack!

Ingredients • 350g oats • 100g chopped pecan nuts • 150g other chopped nuts (such as hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews or flaked almonds) • 150g mixed seeds (such as pumpkin, chia, sunflower, flaxseed/linseed) • 130ml maple syrup/honey • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract/essence • 40ml melted coconut oil or rapeseed oil

• 150g dried fruit of your desire (such as raisins, sultanas, cranberries, chopped dates, chopped apricots)

Method 1.Preheat the oven to 160’c. 2.Place a baking sheet or a piece of parchment paper onto a baking tray. (This is to prevent the granola mixture from sticking to the baking tray). 3.Add the melted coconut oil/rapeseed oil, maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon into a large mixing bowl and stir to combine. 4.Add the remaining ingredients (EXCEPT the dried fruit) into the mixing bowl and coat the dry ingredients with the moist ingredients. Use your hands to really bind the mixture well together into small clumps/clusters. 5.Spread this mixture as an even layer on the lined baking tray. Use a second lined baking tray if needed. 6.Bake in the oven at 150’c for 35-40

minutes until the granola is golden. Keep an eye on the granola and turn the tray half-way through baking to ensure all the granola is baked evenly. Avoid stirring the granola as this will reduce the granola clumps/clusters. 7.Make sure the granola is completely cool (this will ensure you get nice crunchy clusters!). Then add the dried fruit and store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 1 month.

Be kind to yourself and your loved ones!

By Siobhan O’Neill White If we thought 2020 was tough, in many ways, 2021 was even harder. We’ve all been on a rollercoaster of emotion; worrying about catching Covid, for many people trying to get through Covid and on top of that, the stress of multiple lockdowns. It has been an extraordinarily difficult time so this January, go easy on yourself. Many of us, me included, have put on a few extra pounds since Covid barged into our lives and caused all sorts of disruption. With the levels of worry and fear we have experienced, putting on a few lbs is really not that big a deal in the grand scheme of

things. As January rolls around, lots of us may start thinking about getting fitter and losing weight but this year, we are suggesting that you be kind to yourself. If you want to cut back on the sweet treats a little, that’s ok. If you want to do add extra exercise into your life, go right ahead. But please remember, that we are all going through an incredibly tough time and we need to mind ourselves. Our mental health is as important as our physical health and it’s important to make the time to do nice things for yourself. Whether that’s going for a long walk, relaxing for half an hour with a coffee and magazine or taking a

relaxing bubble bath – do what helps you relax and unwind.And as we are staying at home more than usual, make time for nice activities, like baking with the kids or cooking a nice dinner. Maybe have a pajama day with movies and hot chocolate or bring our some board games for a bit of fun family time.Whatever you get up to this January, remember, be kind to yourself and your loved ones. We’ve got to pull together and support each other as much as possible to get through these strange, unsettling times. Do you want to buy a turnkey property in advance Fingal County Council is urging developers to give them the opportunity to buy new turn-key homes in advance to help ease the housing crisis and deliver affordable housing for those most in need. The Council wants to be able to tap into the large number of unbuilt properties which have received planning permission It has ambitions to secure at least 10 residences at any one scheme, with it hoping that anything up to 150 dwellings could be sold to them in an advance purchase arrangement with developers. Under the proposal, Fingal would agree to purchase an approved number of properties at a development and provide payment on completion. Such an agreement also provides for the direct sale of homes by a developer to an eligible purchaser nominated by the local authority. Liam Burke, Acting Director of Housing and Community Development at Fingal County Council said: “The Housing for All initiative sets out some very clear ambitions around social and affordable housing provision. News & Events Lusk Athletic Club looking forward to 2022! Lusk Athletic Club would like to wish a very happy and healthy New Year to all our members and families. We are already looking forward to an exciting 2022 events with you and hopefully a lot more “real” events” in 2022.The club are confident that ‘red tape’ issues between Fingal County Council and a local developer will soon be resolved and we will be moving to our own home on a dedicated site in Lusk in the first half of 2022 where we can provide safer and better facilities for all our members to train. Club membership for 2022 is now open. Please go to luskathleticclub.ie for details. Training will resume on Tuesday 11th January for all age groups.Some of the club highlights during a very challenging 2021 included seeing the brilliant Cara McNally twice wearing the green of Ireland in International competition. Lusk AC athletes of all ages from juvenile to senior adults and masters athletes posted some fantastic times at virtual and real events and at all distances. Our dedicated athletes competed at track and field events winning national medals, cross country races, marathons which included a number of fantastic sub 3 hour marathon runs, ultra marathons and mountain races. Lusk AC again ran two very successful Fit4Life programmes during the year for new runners and those returning after a long layoff - check our facebook page for the next one in 2022. Another highlight was that club membership reached 700 members meaning that Lusk AC is now the 2nd largest athletics club in the country! Considering that the club was only reformed in 2009, this is a phenomenal achievement and testament to the dedication and hard work of the club committee and our juvenile and adult coaches who invest so much time into the club.The Lusk AC 4 mile race is set for Sunday the 6th March 2022 and we are eagerly looking forward to putting on a great “Real” event after all the virtual races of the past 18 months. Junsa Taekwondo Club News Looking forward to the start of a New Year at Junsa We are still getting there and let’s hope 2022 will bring more great news. At the moment we are still busy building our young athletes to be future black belts ,Poomsae champions , Olympic hopefuls , Taekwondo referees or even trying to fill the kids with confidence and fitness. We help everyone no matter what Taekwondo path they want to follow. Here are some photos of our guys in action and as you will see the first four pictures are of our less advanced students training session while the next six are of when Junsa Taekwondo hosted a training session with Elite Taekwondo. This training session was aimed at the more advanced groups and it was a fantastic training session bringing both styles of Taekwondo together.
