At the time of writing this we are in a period of increasing nnmbers of those suffering from Covid 19. It has been a long time since the pandemic began to dominate our everyday lives. What the future holds for any of us no one knows, but what we do know is that we, as a people, are resilient, caring and kind and we will not let this awful disease spoil our lives. Things will improve if we work together to make them better. Christmas is coming and we will enjoy it with or loved ones and families even though we still have to be very careful . We must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitisers, wearing masks when appropriate, social distancing and having our Covid Certs in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We all love to party especially at this time of year but we must be careful. We must protect our mental and physical health and when Christmas shopping, shop locally. We at Local magazines really appreciate and and love promoting local community based sporting, charitable and voluntary organisations. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers. In the next couple of weeks we will be in the throes of Christmastime. Those days and the season ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers, many of us again working from home, and especially to the survival of those of us who have health problems. This is the time of year when we are told to be charitable, show love and think of others. Let us do exactly that by adhering to the public health guidelines so that the smiles of our children, our grandchildren, friends and neighbours on Christmas day tells us that we have played our part and we are all healthy and happy. So, please let us stay safe, enjoy the season, check on our elderly and infirm relations, friends and neighbours and remember please continue to shop local !

O’Donoghue calls for expanded parking facilities at Lusk Sports Hub At the November Area meeting Cllr Rob O’Donoghue tabled a motion regarding the future plans for provision of parking at the Lusk Sports Hub where recently has had issues with parking for patrons of the Hub. Cllr O’Donoghue was advise that discussions had recently taken place between the Chair of the Lusk 2020 group with the two school principals with view to allowing use of their car parking facilities in the evenings.At the meeting the two school Principals have agreed the location of a pedestrian gate and to replace the existing boundary fencing between the Lusk Hub and the schools with procurement of the new gates and fencing being undertaken with the aim of having the infrastructure in place before the end of quarter one of 2022. Cllr O’Donoghue welcomed the report and thanked the 2020 Group stakeholders, the Operations Department of Fingal County Council and the two Principals of the local schools for their quick and decisive actions in formulating a solution to the issue. He stated ‘as the Sports Hub develops, we need to ensure that access for users of the Hub is adequately catered for given the rise in obesity rates and the ever increasing number of volunteers and club members who use the facility on a weekly basis.’

A happy and healthy Christmas from Lusk Action Group The Christmas lights are up again, thanks to our hard-working LAG team, your generous donations and, most importantly, our three dedicated local electrical contractors, Eamonn from Eamonn Walsh Building and Electrical, Gary from SAGAR Electrical and Mark from TMA Electrical. All of their time was given for free for the benefit of the community and we are, yet again, very grateful. Preparations for our Biodiversity garden continue after meeting some unexpected delays. October and November saw a flurry of Fingal County Council activity around the town, delivering the programme of works. The majority of these were due to our engagement with FCC, and Cllr Robert O’Donoghue’s representations on our behalf. Particularly welcome were the road improvements on Treen Hill, the renovation of the bandstand and the new fencing around the tennis courts in Orlynn Park. We have requested resurfacing of this for inclusion in the next programme of works. We have asked the community for feedback regarding improvements that need to be made around the town. They cannot run this really important service without the help of

Fingal Farmers - Welgro Produce Ltd win Competition 2021 Welgro Produce located in Rush Co Dublin has been selected as the winner of the third Irish Newbie new entrant competition. Welgro established by Shane Halpin, Sean Weldon and Gary Weldon is one of only two commercial cucumber growers in Ireland. Shane Halpin is a local Lusk guy with a farming background, Sean Weldons mother is from Lusk and he attended Lusk National school, Gary Weldon is a Rush local.Shane who has a background in horticulture and mechanics, Sean with an accounting and processing background and Gary who has an agricultural degree share the management responsibilities. The company employing up to 15 people at peak times in the areas of grading/ picking, packing and distribution. As with many new entrants across the EU access to land was a major hurdle for these three friends to become established in a strong horticultural area. Leasing the disused glasshouses was the most viable option to get established while maintaining sustainable set-up costs.Welgro has developed relationships with a number of well-known retailers which is instrumental in ensuring a route to market for the cucumbers produced. Speaking following the announcement Shane Halpin said: “We at Welgro are very proud to have won the Newbie award. We as a team have worked very hard over the last year and it is great to get the recognition of Teagasc.” Gordon Peppard Teagasc noted; “it is very exciting to see three young enthusiastic new entrants to

agriculture, recognise a gap in the market, devise a business plan and seek out the necessary facilities to make their plan a reality.” The Newbie Network is an EU Horizon 2020 funded project with 10 European partners. Newbie offers a unique platform by bringing together new entrants,

successors, advisors, researchers, important regional and national actors and relevant stakeholders in national networks, with the aim of enabling new entrants to successfully establish a sustainable farm business in Europe.

Have your say on Aircraft noise at new runway! The Aircraft Noise Competent Authority (ANCA) is holding a 14-week public consultation on its draft recommendations regarding DAAs application to amend aircraft operating restrictions at Dublin Airport when the new north runway opens.The public consultation will inform ANCA’s final direction to the Planning Authority before it rules on daa’s application next year. ANCA’s recommendations are: (a) Introduce a Noise Abatement Objective for Dublin Airport - the first of its kind in Ireland – as a long-term plan to ensure best management of aircraft noise at the Airport. This will serve to dramatically reduce the long-term impact of aircraft noise by 30% by 2030, 40% by 2035 and 50% by 2040, compared to 2019 aircraft noise levels. They also plan to make three new conditions: (1) Noise Quota System – or noise budget - for night-time operations at Dublin Airport between 11pm and 7am; including a restriction on very loud aircraft flying at night. (2) Restrict flights on the new north runway between midnight and 6am (00:00 – 05:59). and (3) Provide a new Residential Sound Insulation Grant Scheme of up to €20k for residents most affected by night-time noise from Dublin Airport. The ANCA team will hold webinars and be available to engage with stakeholders during the consultation period which is running from 11th November 2021 to 28th February 2022.. ANCA has recorded a short video on the public consultation available at youtu.be/IZD2DeRidkE and registration has now opened for the first of a series of evening webinars where the public will have the opportunity to put their questions to the project team

How to make Christmas financially manageable By Dave Kavanagh Although it may be too late for some people, there are a few things that can be done to make the festive season less of a financial burden. Manage expectations: Most people can’t remember what they got 2 years ago, so don’t put yourself under too much pressure for “big” presents. Leave the credit card at home: At about 20% interest, adding debt for things you don’t need to overspend on, only starts the new year off in a negative. Be realistic with food shopping: The shops are only closed for 1-2 days, do you really need so much? In the days/weeks after Christmas, make a list of all the things you bought but didn’t really need or through out, and keep it for next year. Kris Kin-dle: Talk to family and close friends to agree to pick one person and buy them a present for a set limit, to ease the burden. Other things you can do all year round that can save you enough to cover the cost of Christmas: Switch utility providers, the savings can be quite substantial. Compare be-fore you shop for larger items: Just because one store has a sign saying the fridge you want is re-duced from €900 to €800, doesn’t mean that another store that does not have a sale on, isn’t sell-ing the same fridge for €750. Take the time to shop around when your car or house insurance re-newals come in, it can be well worth the effort. Review premiums that

you pay regularly, such as mortgage protection or life cover, especially if they were taken out directly with a bank who could not compare. Finally, go through a few months’ bank statements: we regularly find people paying for things that should have been cancelled years before.

As 2021 comes to a close Lusk Community Council is looking to January 2022 for the establish-ment of a new Implementation Team for the Lusk Vision 2030 Plan. The first Face2Face briefings on the plan took place on the 7th and 14th November for our public representatives, community organisation representatives and the general public. It was very heartening to hear nothing but pos-itive messages of support from our Councillors and T.D.s as well as from the wider community, for Lusk Vision 2030. (See Lusk Vision 2030 on Facebook) This Plan has the potential to help shape the many suggestions that were put forward by the community. Uniquely for Lusk, it is the first Town Centre First plan in Ireland, a policy being promoted in the Programme for Govern-ment. Lusk Community Council is looking for very broad engagement across the community of Lusk so that we can turn the many recommended initiatives in Lusk Vision 2030 Plan into reality. We can all make positive contributions to the town and your help is needed.

Lets still make it - ‘A Season to be jolly ‘ !

by Siobhan O Neill White Tis the season to be jolly…..but after the last 22 months we can be forgiven if we’re not quite so jolly this year. Many of us are hesitant about socialising too much so we’ve to come up with some ideas for fun things to do at home!Board games may sound old fashioned but once you gather around and pull out a game, it can be great fun. We love the usual games like Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly but this year, we’ve added some new ones from cool Irish company Neverboard. ie They have adult games, kids games and ones for teens. We’ve been having good craic with Cards Against Humanity and Ticket To Ride.Baking is

a fantastic way to spend a winter afternoon with kids. We got a cake mixer from Nisbets at the Ilac Shopping Centre and it’s been such a good investment Baking is an activity our children always want to get involved with and the results are deliciously rewarding! As for cooking, a good casserole dish and quality cookware are just the motivation needed to try new recipes. Each week a member of our family takes a turn to pick a recipe from our cookbooks. As we are home more often nowadays, finding new recipes to cook has kept dinner time interesting! No doubt there will be some rainy days over Christmas break so now is a good time to pick up some crafty materials. The Works is a brilliant shop for art supplies,

craft sets, puzzle books and games. I picked up a word search puzzle book for our 10 year old and she has been getting great mileage out of it. It was under a fiver too, so great value and lots of quiet time for her (and us!) There is something nice about having a pajama day, throw in some hot chocolate and a movie and everyone is happy. Bronagh chocolates from Co Kerry make yummy stir in hot chocolate sticks. They even come with marshmallows on the sticks! Nuttily Nutritious Christmas Pudding!! “This is a tasty twist on the traditional Christmas pudding. It is packed full of ‘nuttylicious’ nutrition and because it is quite rich and decadent, you will find yourself feeling satisfied after 1 slice! Don’t forget to be active over the festive season too, whether it’s dancing, walking, running or ice-skating that floats your boat, be sure to fit in the fitness as much as the food!

Nuttily nutritious Christmas pudding!! Ingredients:

Makes 8x100g servings

• 200g Almonds • 100g Pecan nuts • 100g Dates • 100g Sultanas • 80g Dried figs • 150g almond butter (or just use

whatever nut butter you have, better if it is smooth) • 30g honey • 50g cocoa powder • Juice of 1 large orange • 100g dark chocolate Tip: for some added festive flavour add 1 teaspoon of each of the following spices to the dried fruit mixture to soak in overnight with the orange juice: cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg.

Method 1.Soak the dried fruit (dates, sultanas and figs) overnight in the juice from the squeezed orange. 2. Blitz the nuts using a powerful blender/bullet until all nuts are in a fine mixture. 3.Blitz the dried fruit in a food processor/blender and add into a

mixing bowl with the nut mix. 4.Add the almond butter, cocoa powder and honey into the dried fruit/ nut mixture in the bowl and mix to combine all of the ingredients together. 5.Place the mixture into a dome shaped container/mould and leave in the fridge for 3 hours. 6.Before serving, melt the dark chocolate. Turn the mould upside down on your serving plate and gently tap the top and sides in order to ease the pudding out. Then pour the melted chocolate all over the top and sides. Sleep is the magical pill everyone wants, but no one utilises

Sleep is a recurring state of relaxation that is characterized by an altered state of consciousness, inhibited sensory activity, muscular inhibition, and severely reduced interaction with outside entities. This state alternates between REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, during which dreams occur, and non-REM sleep. While in REM sleep the mind dreams and the body experiences a state of near paralysis that keeps a person from physically acting on dream stimulus (this is called sleep paralysis). Sleep itself is a state in which the body builds up and restores the immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems. Source: alleydog.com.Sleep plays a very important role in many aspects of daily life. Without it we become irritable, have an increased

appetite, higher stress levels, are susceptible to illness and much more. All of which, over time, can have a major impact on physical health, mental health and relationships. The benefits are widely known and very well studied over many years, but here are some practical tips to help improve the quality of your sleep.Firstly reduce your screen usage for at least an hour before going to bed. The screens we so regularly use; phones, tablets, laptops, tv’s all emit blue light, which suppresses melatonin production in the brain. Melatonin is the hormone partly responsible for maintaining the sleep/wake cycle.The next practical tip is to leave your phone outside your bedroom. .It is well reported that people should be sleeping between 7-9 hours per night. However it’s just as important that sleep and wake times are consistent across the whole week, including the

weekend. Caffeine is a mainstay in most people’s morning ritual but too much caffeine later in the day can have a big impact on the quality of sleep. This tip follows on from number one, find yourself a night time routine.The last tip is; upon waking in the morning time, get as much light as possible. This is also linked back to the sleep/wake cycle mentioned earlier. Ideally you go outside to get some natural light but that is very hard during the winter months. The next best thing would be to turn on all the lights in the house to get as much light as you can until early afternoon.Improve your sleep, improve your health.If you’re interested in learning more about sleep, I highly recommend the book; Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker.I will be running a FREE Active Start Challenge in January. News & Events Christmas Raffle on sale as the Clb reaches 700 members! The club were delighted to reach the milestone of over 700 members recently. Thanks to all the coaches, volunteers and members for the continued support you give to make our club what it is. We are really proud to be practising all athletic disciplines; within a fully inclusive club. A bike stand has been constructed at The Hub so we encourage all members to cycle, walk or run to training where possible. Tickets for the Lusk AC Christmas Raffle are now on sale with details on our facebook page. We have some fantastic prizes and all proceeds will help to raise funds for the club for the year ahead. Junsa Taekwondo Club News Junsa Taekwondo training hard for grading Now that we have our new premises and can train in our pods indoors we have begun to concentrate on our sparring skills and preparing for our Christmas grading. Due to all the restrictions this year we were unable to have our summer graduation so hopefully we can have one this coming December. Junsa would like to wish all their members and friends a very Happy Christmas and a safe new year.We are always looking for new members young and old to take part in our wonderful Martial Art and sport.
