O’Donoghue wants Cycle Track and Walkway from Lusk to Train Station Following on from the recent Rush to Lusk Cycle Route

Feasibility Study, Cllr O’Donoghue has called for the fast

tracking of the of the implementation of the Study’s findings

to connect Lusk to the train station. Fingal County Council’s (FCC) overall objective is to deliver a high-quality, safe and attractive pedestrian/cycle network within and between the towns of Rush and Lusk, and improve connectivity to the local Rush/Lusk train station and to a number of schools

and tourist attractions in the area. Councillor O’Donoghue

stated ‘The pathway from Lusk to the station is narrow and dangerous. The berm periodically encroaches on the path

making space for pedestrians even more narrow. Many Lusk residents cycle and walk from the town to the station, the

current road and footpath make it difficult to make for this

journey to be made safely. I am calling for the expedition of plans for the construction of the proposed cycle track and

walkway from Lusk to the Station, which will also link the

town to Rogerstown Park and the proposed Fingal Coastal Way.’ He continued, ‘In the larger picture, this will also

take cars off the road, reducing carbon emissions and traffic

congestion on the Station Road, encourage fitness and active living while also making commuting to the station safer for Cllr Rob O’Donoghue

cyclists and walkers. I am confident that there will be good

news in the near future regarding the installation of this key piece of infrastructure between Lusk and the train station.’

Your Guide to the EU Digital Covid Certificate Europe Direct Blanchardstown has published a series of video interviews on the topic of the EU Digital Covid Certificate.The aim of the interview series is to inform the public as to the purpose of the certificate and how it can be used to facilitate travel within the European Union. The interviews were organised by Europe Direct Manager Siobhan Walshe and recorded by Assistant Coordinator Barry O’Carroll.There were three interviewees in total:Barbara Nolan– Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland.Barbara discussed the Digital Covid Certificate from an EU perspective including the purpose of the certificate and how it will facilitate travel within the EU. Ossian Smyth - Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. How Budgeting Smarter Can Increase Your Funds By Dave Kavanagh Making a little time occasionally to go through your finances and budgeting, can be very rewarding and leave you with more money left over each month. A few practical tips: Carefully study 3 months’ bank statements. Make sure that you can account for every single trans-action. On a regular basis, I encounter people who have been paying for things that they should not be, direct debits they forgot to cancel.Make a detailed list for grocery shopping (and don’t shop while hungry). This leads to only buying what you actually need, a lower bill at the till and less throwing out of food gone off. Compare before you shop for larger items. Just because one store has a fridge you want reduced from €950 to €850 in their “Sale”, does not mean another store nearby that does not currently have a sale on, is not selling the same one for €799. Compare utility providers. Whether it’s electricity, gas, broadband, mobile phone service or similar, there can be substantial savings to be had by switching to better deals. Check when car/house insurance renew-als arrive. Don’t automatically accept a renewal premium without checking around. A few phone calls could save

you hundreds of euro.Review premiums on life cover/mortgage protection/serious illness cover. Especially if you arranged it directly with a bank or insurance company that could not compare. In over 20 years of helping people with their finances, I have never seen anyone NOT make savings by doing the above. LCC launched the final ‘Lusk Vision 2030: Lusk for Life’ Strategic Plan Lusk Community Council launched the final ‘Lusk Vision 2030: Lusk for Life’ Strategic Plan via Virtual Public Information Meeting recently. Following months of independent research, analysis and listening to the people, Lusk Community Council is pleased to launch the final ‘Lusk Vision 2030: Lusk for Life’ Strategic Plan. A virtual public meeting was held online at 7pm on Thursday 26th August to launch the final Strategic Plan. The Plan presents a vision for how Lusk can develop with the best interests of the current and future citizens to the fore.‘Lusk Vision 2030: Lusk for Life’ is a unique community-led action plan for Lusk town commissioned by Lusk Community Council in late 2020, and undertaken by consultants AP+E architects in collaboration with Miriam Delaney and Tara Kennedy. The team listened to public concerns, designed strategies for future development, and provided action

plans and recommendations for how proposals can be achieved by the community. The level of engagement from clubs, community groups, stakeholders and individuals demonstrated the huge appetite for positive change in the town. Key messages highlighted the need for better facilities for teenagers and children in Lusk, a need to expand and improve community facilities, build social cohesion,

‘Go hard or go home’ mentality is outdated

By Ciaran Russell You will have heard this phrase ‘Go Hard or Go Home’ before but maybe this mentality is hindering your progress. How often you rest will directly impact on how you adapt to the training stimulus. By training too hard for a long period of time you run the risk of overtraining. This doesn’t have to mean a complete break from your exercise programme; it can be lighter sessions or different exercise than what you had been doing for the previous weeks. The reason rest is an overlooked part of training is because when you stress the

body for a number of weeks doing the same or very similar exercises or activity your nervous system won’t have a chance to play catch up and you will eventually crash. When this happens, you may feel very tired, you might experience some cold or flu symptoms and you may find your mood is off. These are typical signs that you need to take the foot off the gas. When you have a balanced training programme of intense exercise coupled with proper rest your body will have sufficient time to adapt and recover in a way that will positively benefit you and your training goals. A ‘go hard or go home’ or ‘no pain no gain’

mentality is outdated. Too many people go all in at the very beginning of a new fitness programme in order to race to the end to see the amazing results only to give up a few weeks later. But if you accept that fitness will be a lifetime endeavor you can plan your goals better and will enjoy your training more. While Covid is still a worry when getting families together, with some clever organisation, you can ensure you all have an enjoyable and memorable day. For our daughter’s Communion, we had my husbands side of the family over for food, drinks and cake in our back garden from 2-4pm and then, my side of the family from 4.30-6.30pm. We got deli food and laid it out on a big table outside so that everyone could help themselves. This cut down on groups congregating in the house! Our daughters Communion dress was too small due to all the postponements, so we went back to Alexanders on Parnell St and they kindly swapped it for another. Event Programme is launched for Dublin Climate Action Week

The event programme and online registration have launched for Dublin’s first Climate Action Week (DCAW21), taking place from Monday 13th to Sunday 19th September 2021. A range of online and in-person climate action events are now open for registration at www.dublinclimateactionweek. ie. The broad range of events address the theme areas of Energy & Buildings, Transport, Flood Resilience, Nature Based Solutions, Resource Management and Citizen Engagement.The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Climate Change 2021 Report, categorically underlines the need for urgent action on climate change by all sectors of society. One

of the highlights of the DCAW21 Programme includes a Climate Action Panel Discussion with the Chief Executives of the four Dublin local authorities, taking place online on Tuesday 14th September 2021 at 10am. A number of online film screenings are planned, and outdoor climate film screenings will take place at venues across Dublin. There are also a range of family events, including workshops for children and guided walks in public parks. The Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the Mayors of South Dublin County Council and Fingal County Council, and the Lord Mayor of Dublin City Council, have jointly stated in

Guide Dogs - Global Accessibility Awareness In our digital world it can be difficult for a person with low vision or blindness to use social media. ‘Jaws’ is a screen reader used by many including Guide Dog owner Tom O’Neill from Balbriggan, Co Dublin. In their video, Guide Dogs Australia highlight 3 important tips we should be familiar with. Tip 1: Good Punctuation. Use a full stop at the end of a sentence or phrase to indicate to ascreen reader the end of the text. Example: Irish Guide Dogs. When using a symbol such as @ in an email address, each separate word should be capitalised. Example: GuideDogsBalbriggan@gmail.com otherwise the screen reader sees a jumble of letters guidedogsbalbriggan@gmail.com. Tip 2: High Contrast. Some eye conditions distort a person’s view of things, so colours used are important. A yellow line on a white background can be very difficult to see but a yellow line on a black background is easier to see. Use geometric shapes on advertisements.Example: A large black arrow on a white background could be used to point out important information. In Australia they use large black and white arrows to indicate where the door on a tram is. We could do something similar in Ireland on buses, Luas, DART and trains. Tip 3: Be open and flexible. If approached by someone with low vision or blindness for help, listen to them and work out a solution to the problem together. Be open to new ideas. Lusk United pay tribute to retiring Chairman and need new players

After 2 years as Lusk Utd Chairman, Ciaran Russell, stood down from his position at the recent AGM in July. Ciaran has been involved in the club for most of his life as a player, coach and committee member. Indeed, Ciaran has spent the best part of a decade on the committee in various roles always giving 100% commitment and bringing a rare skill set that will be a great loss to the committee and the club. Ciaran has overseen the first club survey, the development of a club strategy, a restructuring of the committee and a very successful girls only academy at which Ciaran was a coach.The Russell name is synonymous with Lusk and with Lusk Utd; Ciaran’s contribution will go a long way to cementing his name in the

history of the club and we as a club would like to thank him for all his efforts. We wish him the best for the future, and we hope to see Ciaran back on the sidelines at games or even on the training pitches again in the future. Super Cereal Bars “Back to work, school or college after the Summer break may mean back to routine but it doesn’t have to mean back to bad habits! Autumn is the season for change and what better way to start the new school year than on a healthy note. A lot of cereal bars in shops are loaded with sugar which give an instant energy high but this is rapidly followed by an energy crash and cravings for more sweet foods. These cereal bars below are tasty but very satisfying and filling. Not to mention they are so simple to make and contain only 5 ingredients which are very commonplace in many homes. 14 LUSK LOCAL-SEPTEMBER 2021

Ingredients

Makes 15 bars • 500g muesli (No added sugar) • 200mls milk • 100g nut butter (Peanut/almond/ cashew etc.) • 4 tablespoons honey • 150g dark chocolate to coat on top

Method 1. Make a well in the centre of the muesli in a mixing bowl. Add the milk and using a knife make an ‘X’ in the mixture, mixing the milk into the muesli. 2. Add the honey and nut butter and combine together. 3. Spread onto a baking tray with grease proof paper and freeze for 4

hours or overnight. 4. Just before removing from the freezer, melt the dark chocolate and then spread it on top of the mixture. 5. Place the mixture back in the freezer for another hour. Make sure it is quite solid. Then cut it up and gobble up! Try store some in a lunchbox in the freezer so that they last the week!! News & Events Lusk AC returned to competitions in July Lusk Athletic Club half marathon a great success! The club were delighted to hold a Half Marathon for members during August. Starting with a lap of the Hub, the route took in Quickpenny, Hedgestown and Wimbletown before returning to the Hub via the ring road. There was a nice mixture of experienced athletes who were running as part of their Marathon training plans and newer members who in some cases were completing their first Half Marathon. Well done to all who took part or helped out with organising or water drops. All groups are scheduled to return to training in early September. Robbie will fight in Under 21s while Nicole and Tosia will fight In the cadets.
