Local News

At this time of the year we love to get out and about. We visit beaches, drive around beauty spots and have picnics as the good weather brightens our days. This is a time to enjoy with our families and friends whether it is in this country or abroad. However after the holidays, long weekends, city breaks or whatever are over, we will have to return to the reality of everyday living in this community. We are known throughout the world for our generosity of spirit and our kindness and caring philosophy on life. However every year brings its new challenges and this Summer and Winter will be no exception. We are now in an era where the community and voluntary sector will be called upon more and more and we will be called upon to support such organisations. Whenever anyone says such things we generally think of giving what we can to a worthy cause but what about joining the hundreds of volunteers who give so generously of their time to help others? What about helping to care for those less fortunate than ourselves, those who for one reason or another cannot help theselves? We are a community based magazine group who have been publishing magazines across Fingal in Balbriggan, Lusk, Swords, Malahide and Donabate/Portrane for many years. During that period we have had close contact with hundreds of Community and Voluntary groups Charitable and Sporting organisations from all these areas. Some of us have worked in community based organisations and that is why we appreciate the efforts of those involved. Those who give up their time for no gain to feed the hungry, or care for those who are mentally or physically disabled or spend time coaching a sport they enjoy? Those people get a satisfaction and peace of mind that feels like nothing else they will ever be involved in. It is not about their ego. Instead it is about giving of themselves in order to help others without looking for praise or reward. So as your holidays this summer draw to a close why not review how you use your spare time and maybe it will be time for you too to get involved in your community. In the meantime enjoy the month of June and your hols!

O’Donoghue discusses phasing and taking in charge in Lusk At the May Area Committee Cllr Rob O’Donoghue brought a motion discussing the phasing of amenities transfer to the Council related to residential developments in Lusk. As part of conditions set down for residential developments Class 1 Open Space or Commercial buildings may be phased so that they are completed in a timely manner in order to provide amenities for the people in the town to utilise.O’Donoghue commented ‘that while I accept that phasing is not an exact science, and it needs to be flexible there is a perception that in Lusk, time and again that the social dividend that comes with residential development is back ended. The Class 1 Open Space associated with the Forge was conditioned that it should be developed in tandem with the residential development and

should be available to future residents of the development prior to the occupation of any dwelling in the last phase of the development. This has unfortunately not happened to date and the space is consequently not available for use by the residents and local sporting organisations.’ ‘It is vital now that that as highlighted by An Bord Pleanala in August of 2018, that the safeguards put in place around the Class 1 Open Space associated with the Station Road Development at the northern section of the Lusk Sports Hub is transferred in an expedient manner to ensure the delivery of amenities for clubs at the Hub. I welcome the Council managements assurances that the delivery of the site has been subject to ongoing monitoring by the Planning Authority’

The consultation period for the Fingal Development Plan 2023 – 2029 has now closed. Lusk Action Group along with other community organisations and local residents made submissions on the plan. We thank the members of our community who took the time to make submissions. We all strive to improve our town. Lusk Action Group has recently been made aware of building quality issues being experienced by homeowners in The Forge estate. Mindful of the fact that the same developer responsible for the delivery of this estate is now looking for planning permission from An Bord Pleanála for another very large estate within Lusk, we intend to investigate these issues, document them, and present them to the developer and relevant authorities and push for any necessary remediation to be undertaken without delay. If you are experiencing any building quality issues in this estate, please contact us at the email address below. Summer is fast approaching and it’s always a busy time in Lusk with many people enjoying the outdoors. We ask that the local environment is kept to the fore of people’s minds during this time and if you encounter litter to pick it up and dispose of it in a bin of which there are lots around the village. You might consider a litter picking walk once a week or even once a month. All you need is a bag, a pair of gloves and a litter picker. Half an hour along a patch of your choice makes such a difference to our town. Remember that the Summer Festival is coming up in mid-June. LAG is still looking for sponsorship from local businesses and support from members of the community to help on the day. Reasons people use to avoid their finances By Dave Kavanagh For many reasons, people often put off having to deal with their finances (it’s not the most fun exercise!) despite the fact it can give them peace of mind, reduce outgoings and often leave them with more money left over each month. But what are they really saying? “I’ll have a look at that after Christmas”. Often replaced with “after Easter”, “after the holidays”, “after the kids go back to school” and a few others. What is actually being said is “I’ll name some time in the future so that I don’t have to deal with it now”. Let’s face it, you can easily find 30-60 minutes once a year to deal with something this important. You’ll be glad you took the time. “We have everything in order already”. Great. That is if it’s been reviewed in the last few months, but on closer examination, it often hasn’t been looked at in years and circumstances have changed. It’s important to keep things relevant to your current personal circumstances. “Our bank sorted everything for us”. Your bank may have sorted a few things, but in most cases, banks are tied to one company, so a fair comparison cannot be made, meaning you could be paying way over the odds for whatever the bank has put in place for

you. Dealing with an advisor who is not tied to one company and can compare other options is the only way to make sure you get the best value. “I’m busy at present, I’ll give you a shout in a few months”. Let’s face it, going through your finances is rarely on anyone’s list of favourite activities. But the fact remains, if there is an activity that you like you will make time for it. Burying your head in the sand is rarely a successful solution to most problems. Someone once told me that they had no time and in the same conversation told me they had queued for over an hour in a drive through for doughnuts. Lusk Vision 2030 Shortlisted for European Bauhaus Award

Lusk Cultural Centre nearing completion

As the COVID challenge in society wanes, Lusk Community Council is focused on delivering a range of strategic initiatives for Lusk. Lusk Vision 2030 is the strategic plan that we commis-sioned and completed in 2021. We are now focused on the delivery of this strategic plan for the town. The Community Council is delighted that Lusk Vision 2030 has received recognition in Eu-rope with its shortlisting in the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2022. The project has been chosen as one of 52 overall finalists out of 1,100 submissions from across the EU. No matter what the outcome of the awards, this international recognition for Lusk Vision

2030 to be shortlisted is a source of great pride for the town and for the Community Council. We have submitted the final Lusk Vision 2030 plan to Fingal County Council for the review of the Fingal Development Plan as we seek to embed the Lusk Vision 2030 priorities in the Fingal Development Plan 2023-2029. In line with the principles of “Town Centre First”, the construction of the Lusk Community Cultural Centre represents the single largest community led investment in the town to date. As the con-struction project is nearing completion, we are focused on opening up of the Cultural Centre with a very special exhibition, staffing

arrangements for the new community facility and the creation of a community campus composed of the Cottage Community Centre, Saint Macullins Centre and the Cultural Centre in the heart of the town. We see the Cultural Centre as a phase 1 project on the Katie Hunt’s site. The Community Council and Fingal County Council have received grant ap-proval for €48,600 under the Town & Village Renewal Scheme for the design of phase 2 for the site. This phase 2 project represents a very significant workload that we are now beginning and look forward to bringing forward new phase 2 proposals in line with our Lusk Vision 2030 strate-gic plan by the end of 2022.

Check out the new Howth School of Fish

Established by local fisherman Sean Doran, whose family have been in the fish business in Howth for 60 years, this new marine focused excursion is sure to delight family members of all ages. This fun educational experience consists of talks on fishing vessels, how they fish and what species they catch in Irish coastal waters. Hear from real fishermen as they tell stories from the trawlers in action battling Irish weather & learn about fish stocks and sustainability. Then experience some fun hands-on activities such as rope tying, and shucking oysters, and enjoy a delicious seafood lunch in our restaurant overlooking the pier. options include a boat trip around Ireland’s eye where guests will hear about local shipwrecks and the history of Grace O’Malley, the pirate queen. Located on the West Pier in Howth, facing out to Ireland’s eye and Lambay Island, part of the excursion will take guests on a walk along the pier to look at real fishing trawlers and talk to active fishermen about their day to day lives. This special day out will be of interest to groups of friends, family, transition year and catering students, groups of chefs and hospitality staff and tourist groups with an interest in how a fishing harbour works and how best to prepare and eat fish that is sustainable in stocks.Specialist groups can avail of a tailored package to focus

The Ned and Máire Maguire Perpetual Trophy We would like to congratulate Tommy Murray of Derham Park, Balbriggan, Co Dublin who is the recipient of this years Ned and Máire Maguire Perpetual Trophy. Back in 1986 our Guide Dogs branch formed and began fundraising. One of our biggest fundraisers was a sponsored walk in the late 80’s to 90’s and one couple who did the walk every single year was Ned and Máire Maguire from Delahasey just outside Balbriggan. The couple would go door to door with their sponsor card and inform people of what a guide dog was and what they did. This was long before we could spread the word with a simple text via mobile phone or by sharing a post on social media. They were doing the work that social media does today and getting the word out there. So, when Ned and later Máire passed away, a trophy was sourced, featuring a mother with a litter of puppies. It is named after them to reflect the extraordinary commitment they gave to our branch. The trophy is given annually to someone or some business that does something that stands out in the past year to help our branch. This year we were delighted to award it to Tommy Murray who joined our branch in the late 80’s and has given over 30 years of service to us, including but not limited to, helping at dog walks, emptying counter boxes, church gates, selling Christmas cards and calendars to name a few. We extend our congratulations to Tommy and thank him for all he has done for our branch. The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival – Dates for your Diary!

The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival was last held in 2019. Covid restrictions meant that it could not be held in 2020 or 2021. BUT we are delighted to say that we are working on Festival 2022. The Festival will be launched in The Brook, Portrane on Thursday 8th. September and finish on Sunday 18th September.Festival favourites are back on the programme.The Dublin String Quartet is performing in our Gala Concert and they will be supported by The Blanchardstown 12 LUSK LOCAL-JUNE 2022

Brass Band, Skerries Strummers and David Scott. Films for the 3 Day Short Film Festival are being sourced by Emma Fagan from Fillum.We have workshops for adults and for children, tours of Portrane Martello Tower, St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland and Newbridge House, Biodiversity Walk and Talk led by Hans Visser, biodiversity officer with Fingal Co. Co. Family events - “Go Fly Your Kite” and walking treasure hunt. Health and Well Being workshops in The Community

Well and Tai Chi on Portrane Green.These are just SOME of the events.We will be back with a more comprehensive list next month.We have 2 fundraising events during the summer – A Quiz and a Raffle and we ask you to support these. The reason I say this is nutritious is because it contains nuts which are full of protein, healthy fats, fibre, minerals such as magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and vitamins such as vitamin E and some B vitamins. It also contains dark chocolate, made of at least 70% cocoa, which is known to be high in antioxidants including heart healthy flavonols. Finally I use a small amount of honey/ agave syrup/date syrup or maple syrup to add a bit of sweetness......scrumptious!

We’re delighted to inform you that Lusk United have surpassed the incredible milestone of reaching 1,000 members.At a closer glance the club now consists of the following membership details: * Total members – 1,022 - Juvenile members – 732 - (Female / Male breakdown – 263 (36%): 469 (64%) - Adult active-playing members - 150 Founded in 1969, Lusk United AFC provides an opportunity for the community of Lusk to participate in soccer with well in excess of forty teams now participating in football and associated activities. Outside their core activities, the club has been instrumental in being involved in additional community events in recent years, such as the 24hour football fundraisingmatch in aid of Pieta House and the continued hosting of the East of Ireland Marathon series.In recent years the

clubs growth in girl’s football has been phenomenal, which has been highlighted further with the likes of the club’s partnership with the FAI in delivering a girls only football programme for transition year students from local secondary schools whereby thirteen girls completed the FAI Safeguarding Workshop and the FAI PDP 1 coaching course. They also received some first aid training with St. Johns Ambulance and had a workshop with Jigsaw North Fingal on mental health. Another example of the growth of female participation within the club is as one of the founding members of the ‘Ladies KickFit’ programme – an exemplar of female participation in sports via a FAI & Fingal County Council (Sports Office) partnership. Junsa Taekwondo Club News Team Junsa Taekwondo back to Competition Recently Junsa Taekwondo took part in a development tournament in Baldoyle organised by our national governing body , Taekwondo Ireland and hosted by Baldoyle Taekwondo. The tournament was an excellent opportunity for all our students to gain experience and was open to all age groups from 5 year old to seniors. It’s was a great tournament where Junsa had numerous wins and great performance’s but most of all a fun afternoon. Junsa Taekwondo trains in Lusk scout den.
