With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed, we at Locals Magazine are like you, hoping we may be beginning to enjoy life again. However twelve months after the first lockdown we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of Covid 19 nationally if we don’t adhere to their regulations . Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past few months. This means shopping locally so that our local businness need not only survive but our local employment is secured. Many of us can recall local shops and enterprises going above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly and now it time to give back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print during this crisis. The days and months ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers and business owners and the survival of those of us who have health problems and those children who have their whole lives ahead of them. In other words all of you our readership. With some experts predicting yet another phase if we are not careful, we must all continue to grasp this new era and continue to pull together. This means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Lusk’s future is in your hands this month! By Brian Arnold May 2021 is a key month for looking to the future of Fingal and Lusk. The 12th May is the submission date for the first stage of the Fingal Development Plan while the 27th May is the date for submissions on the Fingal Coastal Way. In advance of these dates Lusk Community Council consultants, working on the Lusk Vision 2030, will be giving feedback on what you have told them. We hope that this feedback will help you to frame your submissions for Fingal County Council.We are mid-way through the Lusk Vision 2030, the consultants have completed extensive consultation both online and via virtual workshops. This represents a first for Lusk and the Community Council. The timing is very important as it is helping to frame the submission which will be made to Fingal County Council in advance of the 12th May deadline. We have to emphasise the importance of the Fingal Development Plan which will run to 2029. This document will affect all of our lives, so please take time to thInk about it and make a submission. Your views are what is important. Please do not take other peoples views and reheat them for your submission. Take 15 minutes to think about what you want and sketch out your ideas, write them down and submit via the Fingal County Council consultation portal. Fingal have set out 7 themes

to make is easier to connect with and understand the process i.e.1. People & Place , 2. Climate Change,3. Connectivity and movement,4. Employment, economy and Dublin Airport,5. Cultural heritage, 6. Covid 19 has brought so much more information online and Fingal County Council has made great progress in explaining the 7 themes and how you can engage on the new Development Plan via their website . This is important so take

your 15 minutes to engage.The level 5 lockdown has prevented the commencement of the construction contract for the Lusk Community Cultural Centre on Church Road. However it is hoped that work will have commenced by the time that you are reading this article. Looking forward over coming months, if thevaccination programme does what we hope it will, we look forward to the reopening of our community facilities in Lusk and Fingal. Fingers crossed. O’Donoghue calls for safe crossings for Station Road At the April Area Committee meeting Cllr Rob O’Donoghue tabled a motion regarding the dangers of future increased traffic along the Station Road ,Lusk, linked to the new housing development and town centre and called for safe crossing points for current and future residents.Cllr O’Donoghue stated that ‘The area will be used by current and new residents accessing the new Lidl which will be constructed post the lifting of Covid restrictions. The increased traffic that this will bring will primarily affect residents of the surrounding estates and nursing home and provision should be made now to ensure the safety of residents accessing the new town centre and our nursing home.’ The response from the Council stated that a number of pedestrian crossings are to be provided, to facilitate access to the new development on Station Road. A zebra crossing will be provided on the Station Road arm of the Remount Roundabout. To the west of the entrance to the Community Centre, a raised table and uncontrolled crossing will be provided to provide access to the new town centre.Cllr O’Donoghue hailed the decision stating that ‘the new town centre will be used not only by residents of Lusk but also of surrounding towns, which will bring revenue into the town and that is welcomed. Balbriggan on a sunny day and Anne was asked if she needed help crossing the road. Anne was wearing dark sunglasses at the time and the person thought she was blind. We will all miss Yarrow, especially

Anne, and wish him ‘Good Luck’ in his training and future life as an Assistance Dog.Looking back to

the 1980s, Issue 10 of Guidelines, the newsletter, of then called ‘Irish Guide Dogs Association’, featured ‘The Beginning of the Balbriggan Branch’ by Tom O

’ Neill Chairman.Tom qualified with his first Guide Dog Frank, a black Labrador in 1985, and

returned to Balbriggan which at the time had a population of about 8,000.Tom found out that there were no branches of the association in the North Dublin area so he and his wife Breege formed the branch ‘if only to show the local people what a Guide Dog could do for a visually impaired person’.

In 1987 £3,500 was raised and the branch continues today with the help of our loyal supporters and volunteers.

Take a closer look at what you have By Dave Kavanagh There are many aspects of life that people take for granted, especially if it’s something that is long running and gets paid by direct debit from your bank account. I regularly see clients that have had the same cover plans in place, without ever checking if they are still suitable for their current circumstances. Changes in employment, income, new additions to family, or moving home are just some of the things that could completely alter your requirements. You could even be paying for something that is no longer required or needed. If a plan was taken out directly with a bank or insurance company (where it was not compared) you could be paying premiums way higher than necessary.

What kind of details should people be aware of? For a start, just knowing the basics would be helpful. With things like life cover, mortgage protection or serious illness cover, what premiums are you paying? How much cover is in place? When is the plan due to expire? Does it have a conversion option that would allow you to continue cover beyond the end of the plan if your health deteriorated? Is it “dual” or “joint” cover? If you pay for income protection, has your salary

reduced or increased over the years? Are you paying for levels that you may no longer be able to claim for? While it may not be the most “fun” exercise, taking some time to examine the details of anything you may have in place, is usually very worthwhile. You may save yourself money but you will also have the peace of mind that what you have in place is the most appropriate for your circumstances.

Funerals during Covid are proving very stressful

By Siobhán O’Neill White So many of us have lost loved ones over the past year and grieving has been made even more difficult with lockdown and restrictions. In January we lost my beloved Nanny Tess. She was a fabulous woman and we were so sad to lose her. It was extremely difficult that only 10 people attend her funeral. Then, in March, we suddenly and unexpectedly lost my husband’s Mother. She was a very active woman and as she was only in her 70’s, the shock of her passing has been very traumatic to process. Our children are devastated. They have had days where they cried in school or couldn’t get to sleep because they were so upset. Again, the funeral was very restricted and caused us alot of pain and sadness. Not being able to have her siblings and son-in-law in for the service felt cruel and wrong. As so many of us are navigating bereavement, we asked parenting coach, Allen O’Donoghue, from Help Me to Parent, for some advice on dealing with bereavement as a family. He says:1) to take care of yourself and look at what is going on for you as a parent;2) try not to hide your own grief from your children,

seeing you be upset or know that you are upset, may give them “permission” to grieve themselves;3) try not to force them to talk or worry if they don’t show emotion, sometimes they need to just try and process things for themselves;4) just listen to them, if they come to you upset, let them experience their emotions and reassure them that it is absolutely okay to feel how they feel;5) if you have a child who generally doesn’t want to show emotion, let them know that it is okay to cry and be upset, but that they don’t have to do it in front of anyone;6) you could get a notebook to let them write how they were feeling if they need to;7) get professional support if they really need it.For more advice, contact Allen at: r 086-805840 for support.

NEAT - An underestimated element of weight loss

By Ciaran Russell Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT, refers to unplanned physical activity which is the largest component of caloric expenditure that you can readily change. People are more sedentary than ever before and this contributes to an increase in chronic illness, all because we are spending more time staying still. Many people working office, or now home office, jobs will likely be sitting down for the majority of their work day, which is followed by sitting down to watch the next must see TV series for the evening.Over time this compounds into a population of people that don’t move their body

as much as the can or should and can then lead to further health concerns later in life.Thankfully there’s some steps we can take to increase our levels of physical activity which not only benefits you when you want to lose some excess body fat but it will also positively contribute to better health. For example; things like walking to school with your kids or cycling to the shop instead of getting in your car. When you’re back in the office or shopping centres, opt to take the stairs over the lift. Even park your car as far away in the carpark as possible. These small actions will become habits over time and will have a really big impact on your levels of activity.For the office workers, set regular alarms to trigger you to take

a movement break, leave your bottle of water or your phone on the other side of the room so you have to get up to get them. Better still get yourself a standing desk if possible. The aim is to move as much as possible throughout your day. Some might find it helpful to set a daily step target. By setting a number of steps to be achieved every day you are giving yourself some more motivation to get moving. By putting more emphasis on your NEAT and increasing your levels of physical activity you are building better habits for the future more active you. Having a more active day will have a positive impact on your physical and mental health, your energy and your weight loss.

Niamh’s Grilled Chicken and Grape Salad May is officially the first month of the Summer season and hopefully we will have lots of nice sunny weather which ‘May’ entice us to eat more salads! This recipe is quick to throw together but has lots of variety with crunchy and juicy textures and flavours!! Really handy and can help avoid food waste too, especially if you have left over cooked chicken or salad ingredients that need to be used!!! Ingredients: (Serves 1 person) • • • • • •

1 chicken fillet 1 handful (approx. x10) grapes (green or red) 50g pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds 6 cherry tomatoes 200g spinach and other leaves (Fresh Basil leaves add a beautiful flavour of Summer!) 60g Feta cheese

Feel free to add any other ingredients of your liking such as red onion, scallion, peppers, diced beetroot, shredded carrot, cucumber, slices of apple, Goat’s cheese, couscous, walnuts or pecans. 12 LUSK LOCAL-MAY 2021

Tip: For more flavour, toast the seeds by heating them on a dry pan over a medium heat for 1-2minutes until they turn golden brown and produce a rich, toasty fragrance. DON’T take your eye off them though as they burn quite easily and toss them around on the pan to ensure even toasting!

Optional Balsamic Honey Dressing (alternatively use a dressing of your liking) (Makes 4 servings. Store any leftover dressing in an air-tight container in the fridge and use within 3 weeks) • • • • •

3 tablespoonsBalsamic vinega 1 tablespoon honey 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 5 tablespoons olive oil Pinch of black pepper.

To make the dressing, place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth (approx. 30 seconds). Alternatively whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl until they are well combined. (Although using a blender will result in a smoother consistency). Stir well before serving to ensure the ingredients are combined.

Method:

(1.)Grill the chicken fillet with spices or flavouring of your liking. I like Cajun spices or paprika.(2.) While keeping an eye on the grill, prepare the salad ingredients by washing and chopping/slicing. (3.) Place all of the salad ingredients into a large mixing bowl (spinach, sliced grapes, tomatoes, feta cheese and seeds). When cooked thoroughly, slice the grilled chicken and add into this mixing bowl. Then add a dressing of your choice and toss all the ingredients around in the mixing bowl. Ensure the dressing coats all of the ingredients evenly. (4.) Assemble the salad on your serving dish. Lusk United successful application for Sports Equipment Grant

The Executive Committee of Lusk United A.F.C. are delighted to inform you of the great news of our successful application for funding to the 2021 sports equipment grant of Fingal County Council (Sports Office). Lusk United A.F.C. will receive a payment of €2,000 which will partially support the upgrade works to the fencing at our all-weather training area at Station Road, Lusk. The Executive Committee of Lusk United expressed their gratitude to those involved for making this happen and they look forward to working with all stakeholders,particularly 14 LUSK LOCAL-MAY 2021

Fingal County Council, in delivering these upgrade works over the months ahead. Once again, it has been a busy month for the Lusk United Youth Council, as they continue to work to foster team spirit in our underage players while they are unable to train and play. This month saw the Easter Hunt. Local children firstly enjoyed painting rocks with an Easter theme, then heading out on Easter Sunday, with no doubt a belly full of chocolate, on a hunt for painted rocks. It is so heartening to see the Youth

Council go from strength to strength and strive to provide children in our community with such fun activities. Meanwhile, it is all systems go as we prepare for the return to play. Pitches have been fertilised, reshaped and goalposts moved as we make facilities even better for our players and their long awaited return. If anyone wishes to get involved with our club as a volunteer, we would be delighted! The more the merrier as we #workhard and #havefun at Lusk United, aiming to make a better community for all. News & Events Lusk AC raising money for Daffodil Day Well done to our members and their families who took on a 24 hour relay challenge in April from Friday 3pm to Saturday 3pm in aid of Daffodil Day. There were 48 half hour slots to fill across the 24 hours and none were left blank. The weather was kind although those hardy enough to fill the slots in the early hours of Saturday morning had to endure sub zero temperatures. Thanks to the organisers. Donations kindly accepted to Daffodil Day 2021. A reminder to parents to renew their children’s registration now that Juvenile training has resumed. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for full return to training details.A big thank you to our coaches & mentors for sending weekly training plans to keep us motivated while in lockdown. Good luck to everyone preparing for the Portmarnock 5k / 5 mile and the Drogheda 10k that take place in May. Don’t forget to register. Junsa Taekwondo Club News Junsa still training on line during the pandemic While still we are still training online and keeping our skills up to date, we are looking forward to the restrictions easing and beginning to train safely outside.It will be the first time since Christmas that we have trained together face to face.Here is just a few photos of our guys training online and one or two from the past.
