Lets stand together and shop local !

With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed, we at Locals Magazine are like you, hoping we are beginning to see a new dawn for us all. However we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of Covid 19 nationally. Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past few months. This means shopping locally so that our local businness need not only survive but our local employment is secured. Many of us can recall local shops and enterprises going above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly and now it time to give back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print during this crisis. The days and months ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers and business owners and the survival of those of us who have health problems and those children who have their whole lives ahead of them. In other words all of you our readership. With some experts predicting a second phase we must all continue to grasp this new era and continue to pull together. This means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Let us all stay safe, obey the regulations and enjoy the sunshine and remember please shop local! The Locals Team. Lusk Local Disclaimer

Lusk Community Council avoided the sting Biodiversity came to the Carnegie Library

Community Hall this week when a swarm of honey bees settled in the chimney. Our local beekeeper Brendan O’Herlihy was on hand

to help capture the swarm from the Carnegie Library and shift them to their new home.

Bren’s Honey is available in many local retail

outlets and in the future some of Bren’s Honey will be from the Carnegie Library bees. Many thanks Bren. STAY SAFE and PROTECT OUR BEES.

Lusk Action Group – Working for the Community! We hope that the community is enjoying freedom again, with the lifting of Covid restrictions. We are very lucky, here in Lusk, to have have a very active Foroige. Together with them, we are in the early stages of creating a proposal for a permanent Foroige building. This would be used for youth clubs, youth development groups and youth cafe, so needed and wanted in our community. We have also recently pulled together volunteers from the community who will assist with the youth club. You can expect to hear more from them about how they will be starting back. We have been requesting more Dublin Bus shelters. This may be a long process, but we will continue to communicate the community’s agenda. We have recently been made aware that, as part of the Rogerstown Estuary Park development, there will be a skate park and adventure playground. We continue to look at options for a multi use hard play area, closer to the town, for sports such as basketball or football. We will be submitting a proposal over the coming weeks.Although we have requested fencing in the sports and recreational hub, along the bank of the stream, Fingal Co Co feel, after assessment, that itis not required. It is our intention to submit a proposal for a library in the autumn. This is widely sought in our community, and we will do our best to try and deliver that.Rubbish is a continuing issue in the sports and recreational hub. This is 4

difficult at the moment, but we will continue to request these until we have success.Remember all the fantastic local businesses that kept us afloat during lockdown. Continue to support local! Enjoy the rest of the summer and stay safe. Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

The Great Gatsby passes on to Doggy Heaven 2010-2020 We are very sorry to tell you that The Great Gatsby passed over the rainbow bridge on Thursday 2nd July peacefully in Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind Headquarters in Cork. Gatsby, or Gats, as Tom called him, was one of a kind. He was loved by everyone who met him and by Tom in particular. He guided Tom for almost 8 wonderful years and was looking forward to his retirement when illness suddenly overtook him. We’ve all seen Gatsby with Tom around the streets of Balbriggan, Skerries, Longford, Dublin and further afield. Gatsby was a fantastic tutor to the many students he visited with Tom in various schools and colleges around the country. Among other events he accompanied Tom along with Qeb, Breege’s guide dog, and Yarrow, puppy in training, with Anne Mulligan, to Skerries Community College in 2019 and 2020. He was a brilliant fundraiser for the Balbriggan North County Dublin Branch of IGDB and if Tom couldn’t attend an event Gatsby went along willingly with whoever was trusted with him. Anne Mulligan local puppy raiser was one of his favorite people. Once he saw Anne he knew that it was time for his free run.He loved going to Ardgillan Park, the beach, Longford and many other places. Gatsby knew when he was working and when he was playing and thoroughly enjoyed his life. He always had a waggy tail waiting to greet anyone and everyone who called to the house. Gatsby joined the O’Neill household when he was about 2 years old. Unice, Breege’s guide dog at the time, was a great help to Tom when Gatsby arrived as she taught Gatsby, among other things, the route

Contact us:communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

to his son Eoins house. Gatsby returned the favour when he welcomed young Qeb into the family in December 2018, co-incidentally he arrived on the day Unice, Breege’s retired Guide Dog, went over the rainbow bridge herself. Gatsby helped Qeb become familiar with his new surroundings, locality and family. Gatsby was in Longford, one of his favorite places, with Tom and Breege for a few days when he started to deteriorate.Tom was in contact with IGDB in Cork and they offered to collect Gatsby from Longford to bring him to Cork for medical care and assessment. Unfortunately it was found that Gatsby had Lymphatic cancer which had spread and could not be treated so it was decided to let him pass peacefully. Gatsby never showed his illness and was with Tom every step of the way. There are so many happy memories of Gatsby, lots of stories to be told but they are for another day. Gatsby will be sorely missed by Tom, Breege, their family and the extended family of volunteers who knew and loved him. Have a wonderful time over the rainbow bridge Gatsby. If you would like to help raise much needed funds for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind as a volunteer there are many ways to do this. Please contact us on 085 7663107 by text or phone call or email GuideDogsBalbriggan@gmail.com You can also Text WOOF to 50300 to donate €4 of which IGDB will receive a minimum of €3.60 or you can log on to www.guidedogs.ie and donate there. Many thanks and best wishes from branch coordinators Elaine Skehan and Ann Mulligan on behalf of Tom

Will video calls become the new normal for financial reviews? By Dave Kavanagh A survey by one of the life companies has revealed that 9 out of 10 people in Ireland were not aware that financial reviews can be done by video call. Many of those surveyed would be in favour of doing a review this way. Some of the reasons cited were: personal safety - no risk of COVID-19, convenience - no driving or parking to meet, easy to arrange, and time saving - no journey to and from a meeting. The feedback from those that have availed of this service was also very posi-tive.

Why video and not just phone call? It is often said that communication is about 20% what you say, 30% tone and 50% body language. It is far easier to understand what someone is explaining when you can see them. The reverse is also true, it is easier to gauge the pace of how you’re explaining something when you can see the reactions of those you’re talking to. Also, screen sharing gives the ability to display a variety of graphics, screens or documents from both sides. So what kind of things can you cover in a review? Most aspects of your current, future and

unex-pected income and expenditure. Your day to day budgeting, planning ahead for the short, medium and long term. Planning for unexpected events with things like life cover, serious illness cover and income protection (and making sure you are not over paying for existing plans!) Calculating what you may need in planning for retirement, including looking at anything you may already have in place. Overall, keeping you up to date and in control of your finances. It could be the most im-portant video call you make this year! Dave Kavanagh QFA has been advising people financially for over 25 years. For quotes or information (with no cost or obligation) he can be contacted by emailing info@financialcompanion. ie or use the contact form on www. financialcompanion.ie or phone 087-6414570. Combined with his previous role of gym/nutrition adviser, he regularly gives talks and workshops at seminars and events for groups, companies and government departments on financial wellbeing, positivity and motivation. As heard on RTE 2FM and TV3.

Snapshots of Fingal’s Past – Fingal Heritage Office wants to hear from you! Do you have photographs of Fingal’s places, people, events,

everyday life, sport, farming, industry and crafts? The Fingal Heritage Network together with the Fingal Heritage Office wants to capture the snapshots of our past and the stories that they tell, for a virtual

exhibition.‘Originally planned as a live event we have had to adjust to

the current situation’ said Fingal Heritage Officer, Christine Baker ‘As a

project for National Heritage Week 15-23 August, we will tell the stories of our past through a virtual exhibition on the Fingal County Council

website’.To take part we need your photographs and a short paragraph

of no more than 500 words telling the story behind the ‘snapshot’. You

can email your photographs directly to the Heritage Officer at Christine. baker@fingal.ie. We can also arrange to have your photographs scanned and returned to you. The deadline for submission is 20thJuly 2020.This is an opportunity to record and share those fleeting stories caught on camera for the future and to remind people of events of the past that make Fingal such a special place to live.

Enjoying the Summer after Lockdown!

By Siobhan O’Neill White Finally, restrictions have been eased and we can get out of the house after being cooped up for so long. Here are some suggestions for family friendly places to visit this summer. First off, Leisureplex. With all the rain lately, this is ideal indoor family fun. Their 6 locations have re-opened in accordance with Covid safety guidelines including hand sanitisers, social distance floorgraphics, “lane closed” bowling cones, safe-queuing floor graphics and safety shields at food diners. For days out, Irish National Stud Kildare is fantastic. Explore the beautiful gardens, follow the fairy trails, see the horses and lunch at the café. The children should sleep soundly after a day here! Dublinia is a fascinating place to learn about Vikings and medieval Dublin. Our teenagers loved this especially discovering the weapons. Interesting for all ages. All through lockdown, Droichead Arts Centre hosted virtual events to keep people connected. Now reopened, check their website to see what’s coming up https://www.droichead. com/ A summer camp we really like is Bricks4kidz Lego camps. They 10 LUSK LOCAL-AUGUST 2020

focus on learning through Lego. Without knowing it, the children are learning STEM. Very clever and fun. For bookings, contact Steve srees@ bricks4kidz.com. At Newgrange Farm, see the baby chicks, milk a cow, visit the outdoor café or enjoy a picnic in the spacious grounds. We loved seeing the animals – even the farm dogs are super friendly and happy toplay with the children. For a perfect staycation, we love Fota Island Resort Cork. The hotel and lodges are now available tobook and their swimming pool is open too! For safety reasons, swim sessions must be pre-booked.This is one of our favourite hotels in all of Ireland. It is close to Cobh, Kinsale, Cork City and right next door to Fota Wildlife Park, so there is plenty to do! For a break on the east coast, The Village Hotel Bettystown is located just a few minutes’ walk from the beach. With ice-cream shops and beach cafes, Bettystown is a lovely seaside village. The bustling town of Drogheda is just 4 miles away and The Arc Cinema there has re-opened too, if you fancy a family trip to the movies! Niamh’s Summertime Frozen Yogurt Bark! A satisfying and scrumptiously refreshing summertime snack! Packed with protein and calcium.

• •

The ingredients are fairly flexible so tailor to your tastes and use whatever flavour of yogurt/ fruit/toppings you like! Vanilla yogurt or adding some honey make it scrumptious!

Multi-coloured yogurt bark • 250g Greek or Greek style yogurt • 1x passion fruit • 20g cocao nibs • 10g goji berries

The most important ingredient to use is Greek or Greek style yogurt as this will prevent ice crystals forming. Here are a few other ideas as shown in the image

Ingredients: Blueberry yogurt bark 14 LUSK LOCAL-AUGUST 2020

200g Greek or Greek style yogurt 100g blitzed blueberries (in a blender or simply mash with a fork)

Tip: The size of the lunchbox you use determines the thickness of the bark. I used a 12cm lunchbox for the yogurt bark in these images which made the yogurt bark 1cm thick. If the yogurt bark is too thick, it will be difficult to bite into it!

Method: 1. Line a lunchbox with cling film. 2. Mix the yogurt in a bowl with your choice of ingredients. Keep a few to sprinkle on top. 3. Pour the yogurt into the lunchbox. 3. Sprinkle the remainder of the ingredients on top of the yogurt. 4. Put the lid on the lunchbox and place in a freezer for 2-4hours or until completely frozen. You will need to allow a few minutes for it to slightly defrost and become soft before eating. For nutrition and healthy eating talks or workshops in preschools, primary or secondary schools, workplaces, sports or community groups please email:niamh@biabites.netSee my ‘Fun food’ and ‘Recipes’ albums on ‘Biabites’ Facebook for other food ideas.Niamh Arthurs BSc, Msc Registered Dietitian Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

Junsa Taekwondo Club News Junsa Taekwondo back in action At long last Junsa Taekwondo is back in action at the Round Towers GAA Club. We are not at full capacity as we still have to practice our safe distancing, but back we are and making our wonderful Olympic sport available to everyone .It is great to see some familiar faces and some new ones at the club.We have been working hard over the last few weeks in preparation for getting back to training , putting in place clean of equipment schedules to keep everyone safe. While there will probably be no competitions this year we at Junsa will be in preparation for next years tournaments. We will also be preparing for any Black Belt gradings that might be put on the calendar at the end of this year. While combat sports has been given the go ahead to resume training , at Junsa Taekwondo we still insist on our intermediate and advanced students wearing face coverings while pad kicking and we will gradually introduce sparring over a period of time , all while still wear face coverings. Step by step. Our beginners class will have very little physical contact, this class is all about learning the moves , improving their skills , movement, hand eye coordination, kicking drills , flexibility , confidence and having fun. Junsa would like to thank all their members for their support on getting back up and running after the last few months, we would also like to thank the Round Towers GAA for their help in getting the hall safe and ready for us to use and of course to the LuskLocal for covering our stories.
