As we look forward to the coming year it is of course time to make resolutions and we are sure many of you have done so by now. Lusk Cub Scouts awarded Chief Scout Award

Cub Scouts of 153rd Lusk Scout Group recently received their Chief Scout Award from County Commissioner Thomas Martens. The award sees youth members embark on a 9-month programme that has them working on ‘Adventure Skills’ as well as a number of individual ‘Special Interest’ projects. In addition, youth members are required to plan and execute an expedition as well as a two-night residential event. For their expedition, the youth members decided upon hiking the Barnvare Loop in Carlingford. The residential event saw the youth members link in with a local Polish Youth club, for the first night the group camped at Lough Dan Scout Centre, the following day was spent hiking in Glendalough, before retiring to Glendalough Youth Hostel for the second night. The last day saw the Cub Scouts follow the Wicklow Way back to Lough Dan, allowing them to close out on yet another Adventure Skill badge. All in all, a fantastic achievement

for this group of young people, it is a first for 153rd Lusk Scouts, as these youth members are the first in the

group to complete the Chief Scout Award at this level. All the hard work has paid off

and all involved, leaders and youth members are incredibly proud. BRAVO! Lusk Scout Group.

It is proposed to hold an explanatory meeting to gauge the interest of starting a Men’s Shed in Lusk.Round Tower GAA Club has kindly offered us a meeting room.A meeting will take place in Round Tower GAA Club at 7pm on 14 January 2020. New Year Super Fish Supper Following the festive period, some of us may not want to see turkey or ham on the menu for quite a while! With the new year comes new years resolutions and a lot of people make goals to enhance their health. Fish is full of lots of nutritional goodness. Yet, despite being an island, our intakes of fish in Ireland are quite low. Some people say it’s the smell that fish may leave in the kitchen that turns them off or that they’re just not sure how to make it tasty. But the great news is that fish is quite easy and quick to cook. And a top tip to get rid of any unwanted odours is to place 1/2 lemon in water in a cup (cut side up) and heat in the oven/microwave for 4-6minutes. Burning a nice scented candle also helps! Ingredients: Serves 2 • • • • • 8

2 Salmon fillets 200g Tenderstem broccoli 250g Asparagus 2 teaspoons black pepper 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil

2 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon minced parsley leaves Juice of 1/2 of a lemon Sweet potato chips:

260g sweet potatoes 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil 1 teaspoon chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon black pepper Method:

1. Preheat oven to 200’c. 2.The sweet potato chips take longer to cook, so do these first. Wash, peel and slice the sweet potato into chips. 3. Place the remaining ingredients for the sweet potato chips in a large bowl and stir well to combine. Then add the sliced sweet potatoes and coat in this mixture. 4. Place the sweet potato onto a baking tray and bake in the oven for 40-45minutes at 180’c. Turn them halfway through baking to

ensure they cook evenly. 5. Place the salmon onto a baking tray that is pre-greased or lined with parchment paper. 6. Mix the lemon juice, parsley leaves, oil and garlic together and brush the top and sides of the salmon with this mixture. Bake in the oven at 180’c for 12-15minutes (depending on the thickness of the salmon). When cooked through, the salmon will look opaque and flake easily with a fork. 7.Brush the remainder of the mixture from step 6 onto the broccoli and asparagus on a foil lined baking tray and sprinkle with black pepper. Bake in the oven at 180’c for 10-15minutes or until tender. 8.Serve up with a lemon wedge. Launch of Fingal CC’s Arts Plan 2019 – 2025

Swords Castle was the venue for the launch of the new Fingal County Council’s Arts Plan 2019-2025 which will set out the strategy for arts in the county for the next seven years. Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Eoghan O’Brien was joined by AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Rory O’Byrne, County Arts Officer and special guest speaker Art O’Leary, Secretary-General to the President, in welcoming an audience of artists, cultural policymakers, educators, families and the general public. The content of the plan was informed by a process of public consultation that took place over six weeks from May to June 2018. The first stage of public consultation took the form of an online survey. The second stage of the consultation employed the ‘World Café’ methodology, whereby the Arts Office hosted two half-day workshops with invited stakeholders. Guests were invited to experience two special exhibitions programmed for the occasion, which align with the planning and vision for Swords as a site for contemporary art in the context of the proposed new Cultural Masterplan.

Artist Michele Hetherington presented Talk softly, new site-specific work at Swords Castle. Hetherington is a local Fingal artist and was the recipient of the Fingal Arts Graduate Award in 2018.Alan James Burns presented Silicon Synapse, a Virtual Reality and psycho-acoustic installation in the historic Carnegie Library, Swords. This artwork is jointly commissioned by Fingal County Council and the European Commission’s SciArt programme and is funded by Arts Council of Ireland Open Call Award. The arts plan also features the artwork of photographer Rich Gilligan. Originally a native of Fingal, Gilligan has been commissioned by Fingal Arts Office to document and capture the cultural landscape of the county. This process began in August 2019 and will continue through 2020.Rory O’Byrne concluded that, ‘The arts plan is a celebration of the people and places that define our great county, and we look forward to working with as many people as possible over the coming years to realise our purpose - to bring the arts to life in Fingal and Fingal to life through the Arts’.

Lusk Waterways - Phosphate Pollution By Tom McCloughlin, DCU Water Institute. The waterways around Lusk are all quite small but important sources of freshwater for Turvey / Rogerstown estuary, and drain the lands mostly,to the north of the estuary and have been doing so since the last Ice Age ended. There are two complex stream systems both feeding the estuary: one, is the Palmerstown Stream system which has two main branches meeting below Beau hill, and then entering the estuary at Rogerstown under the little bridge. The other one is the multichannel Ballough stream which rises beyond Naul in some of its branches and joins the Ballyboghill ‘Riv-er’ at Corduff Hall, and on into the estuary. A project by the DCU Water Institute aims to rectify this situation by taking multiple samples of water from the 4 streams comparing a total of 30 sample points on the north side of the estuary. The factor we are most keen to monitor is phosphate which enters water as runoff from agriculture either from N.P.K. fertiliser or in animal husbandry, as manure spread on fields (which doesn’t happen much in the North County). Phosphate also comes from human waste as well as animals. Washing machine or sink outflows containing detergents in turn containing phosphates directly into wild waters from older houses, or yard drains using lots of detergent, have

huge damaging impacts on the streams which poisons the fish that travel up the streams, even to Lusk to try to survive their juvenile lives. The situation is not irreversible, and all of us in Lusk can check one of the following: (A) Homeowners should check that their washing machine outlets, bath-room/kitchen sink drains, soil pipes do not drain into streams and rivers.Businesses should not have yard drains draining directly

into streams and rivers. (B) Farms using NPK fertiliser should follow the guidelines .( C) And finally, road runoffs - rainwater gullies - should not drain directly into streams and rivers as tyre dust (especially the erichrome black to make tyres black) and other particulate matter from vehicles is poisonous to living things, but that rests with the municipal authorities and NRA.

News & Events Lusk AC Celebrates a Successful Year Happy New Year to all of our members and welcome back to training. Our new term starts on Tuesday 7th January for all groups. Our new Fit4Life will commence on Tuesday 14th January. Please register online via our website to renew memberships. New members are always welcome.
