Cllr O’Donoghue seeks clarification on proposed Shopping Centre in Lusk Cllr Rob O’Donoghue is calling on Fingal County Council to allay the concerns of residents in Lusk regarding the construction a shopping centre as part of the ongoing development taking place on Station Road, Lusk. Clarification is being sought by Cllr O’Donoghue at the next Area Operations meeting on the 12th of September as to whether any consultation that has taken place with the developer and the Council with regard to the commencement of the shopping centre. The Counsellor is also asking for an indicative timescale be provided for the instigation of this phase of the development.Cllr O’Donoghue stated that ‘this motion is a result of conversations currently taking place in Lusk, the people of Lusk are worried that the development of the shopping centre is put on the long finger and priority given to the construction of housing. This shopping centre is a key piece of infrastructure for the town that is vital in order to service the needs of our growing population.’

Niamh -Teaching nurses about Naso Gastric tube feeding in Uganda

Our Lusk Local recipe columnist and nutritionist Niamh Arthurs has been volunteering over the Summer in Uganda, Africa with 13 other volunteers as part of a multidisciplinary team including nursing, physiotherapy and nutrition/ dietetics. Their work involved a range of areas including running a 2-week cerebral palsy camp for 25 children which had a tremendous impact on the families who found new hope and support. These families are now linked in with and will be followed up by the Kisiizi Hospital Rehabilitation team. Niamh also provided training to nurses and nursing students on Naso gastric tube feeding, malnutrition screening and treatment to hospital staff and key community outreach workers, nutrition education to communities and 1:1 dietetic and nutrition advice for specific cases. 6

Niamh says, “Building rapport and working alongside employees in the hospital was of pivotal importance in order to enable long lasting changes to occur. It would be similar if someone from another country came into Ireland and told us how to do things better. They may have a point, but we would be reluctant to completely change our ways all at once. We would probably be more open to ideas and to listening to others if we felt our own voice was heard and understood. Our volunteering organisation (UCDVO) are well known and appreciated in Kisiizi. These connections and established relationships really helped us in implementing change and encouraging developments a lot quicker. Another thing we were advised before travelling there, was to teach and do things that could be continued after we left. Otherwise things would

shortly return to the way they were before we arrived. So no short term fixes.One of the greatest realisations I will take with me is to appreciate “life in all its fullness” which is the motto of Kisiizi hospital. We can live on so little and be very happy as the people in these communities do. They live simple, basic lives and are generally happy doing so as they know no different. Yet still having the worst day here is equivalent to one of their best days. I hope everyone has enjoyed their Summers... wherever it has taken you!”

Lusk ICA Summer Outing to the Botanic Gardens

Lusk ICA members enjoyed a lovely day in The Botanic Gardens for their Summer outing this year. We had a guided tour of the gardens and enjoyed lunch in the cafe before going to see the Sweet Pea exhibition, the smells and colours were beautiful. Then we headed closer to home for a meal in City North Hotel to end our day. We look forward to returning after our Summer break on the 4th September and maybe see a few new faces too.

Once again our hard working Tidy Towns Association has worked hard to enhance the beauty of the area. The flower arrangements have added a touch of splendid colour to the village. Lusk United A.F.C. hosts HB Hazelbrook supporting Down Syndrome Ireland What better way to fundraise on a sunny summer’s morning, than with an ice cream party? Lusk United A.F.C. continued with their series of events in marking their 50th anniversary by hosting an ice cream party fundraiser for Down Syndrome Ireland at Rathmore Road, Lusk. This is the second consecutive year that the community football club has helped raise funds for Down Syndrome Ireland, completing an action-packed week which also included the FAI Summer Soccer Schools camp and the club’s Annual Street Leagues 5-a-side games. Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) are a national voluntary organisation supporting people with down syndrome and their families throughout the country. Ice Cream Fundays is an annual fundraising event in aid of DSI, in collaboration with HB Hazelbrook Farm. All proceeds go towards supporting Down Syndrome Ireland, and in particular – their two key programmes of ‘See and Learn’ and ‘Parent Link’. ‘See and Learn’ is an evidence based, structured teaching programme which teaches speech, language and reading skills in small steps, for children with down syndrome

up to 6 years of age. The programme is designed to help educators and parents provide young children with the additional support and practice they need to learn language. ‘Parent-Link’ is about parents supporting parents who share the same journey. With help from fundraising events such as this, ‘Parent-Link’ provides parents with support, understanding, confidentiality and a listening ear. Speaking after the event at Lusk, was Lusk United’s Chairperson Emmet Burke who commented that: “Lusk United were delighted to host for the second year running, our Ice Cream Funday in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. This caps off another great week for our community football club after hosting nearly 150 girls and boys at our FAI Summer Soccer School camp. Lusk United are delighted to raise €1,480.00 for this worthy cause, which I’m sure will be put to great use in supporting DSI’s invaluable programmes”. The ice-cream funday was only one in a series of events to mark Lusk United’s golden milestone of serving its community over the past fifty years.

On Saturday 3rd August 2019 we at Round Towers were delighted to open our second pitch to our members and to our community. Thank you to each and every one who helped over the years to make this special day happen. We hope the community of Lusk enjoyed the celebrations on the day and it was wonderful to have the different generations of players all together in Thomas Ashe Park. Our U8s team had the pleasure of being the first team to play on our new pitch and led our club out with the support of the Black Raven Piper. We look forward to many more historic moments in Round Towers Lusk.
