O’Donoghue welcomes tender process for playground Cllr Rob O’Donoghue has welcomed the tender going out this month for construction of the playground at the Lusk Recreational Hub. Following tender evaluation, it is intended to appoint a contractor in the second quarter and have construction commence thereafter. He said, ‘I also welcome the fact that following the work of my predecessor Ken Farrell that the following works have been carried out at the Hub : 2 extra seven a side soccer pitches, a 100m sprint track, a 1km looped perimeter track, works are ongoing on the completion of a full sized GAA pitch and the perimeter lighting and the lighting of the carpark is currently being installed. Arrangements are currently being made for the installation of dog bins and signage within the sports hub. The Operations Department of Fingal County Council in consultation with the Lusk 2020 Committee are seeking to identify have the most suitable location for the provision of a storage compound for the use of all sports clubs. The requirement to provide changing facilities to service the hub is noted and will be progressed in tandem with the future development of the entire sports hub. Cllr O’Donoghue commented ‘It is now my intention to drive the Phase 2 of the Sports Hub project which I hope will include, skate park, tennis courts or other sports facilities to be decided in conjunction with the Lusk 2020 group and Fingal County Council’.

Dowling demands greater garda resources for lusk

Fine Gael local election candidate for Rush and Lusk Bob Dowling (FG) has requested that greater policing resources are provided for the area of Lusk. Mr Dowling made the comments in response to queries from local residents on whether additional Garda resources could be allocated to serve the town. Dowling, who has been a long time campaigner for additional policing services in Donabate and Portrane, has recently welcomed the news that Rush Garda Station will soon re-open. However, he says a greater emphasis now needs to be put on Lusk in order to deal with an increase in the level of crimes and anti-social behaviour. “I was delighted to press for the re-opening of Rush Garda Station and Minister Flanagan was extremely helpful and caring when I raised that issue with him. Now that Rush station will re-open, I want to raise the same issue about the lack of resources with the Minister but in Lusk. The station is not operational often enough to serve the residents and it is becoming clear that the Garda presence is becoming more and more depleted”, he said. Anti-social behaviour has recently become a serious issue in Lusk and in other areas in Fingal, but Mr Dowling says he believes that a greater presence from the Gardaí would deter such behaviour occurring. “The good news is that now that Rush station is re-opening; the response time from the Gardaí to Lusk will be a lot quicker. However I believe that the need is there for a fully operational station in Lusk at all times, especially at weekends, when anti-social behaviour has occurred. Lusk deserves a real Garda presence that is visible to the locals and prevents crime”. Finally, Mr Dowling said he would be contacting the Minister on this issue and raising it with him at every opportunity. “Minister Flanagan, along with Senator Reilly and Deputy Farrell were extremely helpful in resolving the issue of re-opening Rush station. I believe that with the correct representation, an increase in Garda resources for Lusk can be achieved and this is a priority in my election manifesto”, he concluded.

€3.4 million for Housing Adaptations Grants - Cllr Tom OLeary €3,377,777 has been made available to support home adaptations for older people, people with a disability and people with mobility issues in Fingal , a Fine Gael Councillor has said. The funding, which has been increased this year, will enable older people and people with disabilities to remain living independently in their own homes for longer and will also facilitate early return from hospital. Councillor Tom OLeary said: “I am confident that today’s allocation will continue to build on the progress made since the introduction of this scheme in 2007 and it will demonstrate the Government’s continued commitment to older people and people with a disability.This follows on from the launch last week of our policy document ‘Housing Options for Our Ageing Population’, which committed further resources from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government for this scheme.I am also pleased that funding has been increasing year on year since 2014 and this shows the importance that is attached to the scheme. These grants have an immense impact on the quality of life of the many beneficiaries and play a vitally important role in helping people with a disability and people who are reaching an age in life when they are less mobile, to continue to live independently in their own homes.” Councillor Tom OLeary continued, “Grants of up to €30,000 are available to assist people with a disability in carrying out necessary works to make a house more suitable for their needs, up to €8,000 to assist older people living in poor housing conditions to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out and up to €6,000 for mobility aids to address mobility problems for a member of the household. The grants are 80% funded from the exchequer by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, with 20% funding or €675,555!from from Fingal Co Council .The grants also create employment opportunities for builders and local businesses and help reduce the dependency on our health services by supporting independent living for as long as possible.”

Comhaltas Leithinis Donabate Portrane The newly formed Comhaltas Leithinis Donabate Portrane is going from strength with ever increasing numbers attending. Our first event was with a number of other groups- Irish Comhra Group, AAFA Cantoiri, Tower Singing Circle & Comhaltas Leithinis Donabate Portrane. Which was held at Cates Cafe & in the mall at the Supervalu shopping centre recently! So if you are interested in Irish music and song why not give us a try? Keelings Sessions We began our Keelings sessions (for over 18s) on Wednesday 27th March at 9.00pm After that, they will revert to being on the third Wednesday of the month (Wednesdays- 17thApril,15th May,19th June), stopping for summer, to resume in September when we begin our full programme of lessons and sessions. We will meet in the back function room of Keelings, and in September will move into the main lounge DJ area. Slow sessions in Café Natural - Wayne Hand Slow sessions for beginners/refreshers will take place weekly in Café Natural on Sundays from 11.00-13.00.The first date will be Sunday 31st March.The first hour will be for children primarily, the second for adults. These slow sessions are open only to members of the Leithinis Donabate Portrane Comhaltas due to space constraints, and from September attendees would be expected to be regularly attending classes with the branch. We hope to join people at the Sessions- eg Family Membership €20 per annum. Session FREE! We will be setting up an email address & facebook page in the near future & are very excited with the great response so far!

Launch of Séamus Ennis Centenary Celebrations The recently launched year-long programme of events in Fingal Libraries marks the birth of Séamus Ennis 100 years ago.Fingal Libraries is delighted to partner with the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre based in the Naul for a year of Centenary Celebrations to mark the birth of Séamus Ennis 100 years ago. The Séamus Ennis Centenary Celebrations were launched on Friday 22nd February in The Atrium, Fingal County Hall in Swords, by piper Ronan Browne, along with special guests. The evening featured a performance from talented pipers on Séamus Ennis’ pipes and the reminiscences of people who knew him, including Ivor Browne. A world-class musician, singer, raconteur, mimic and linguist, he was also renowned as a folklore collector for the Irish Folklore Commission.The 23-year-old Séamus embarked on his first field trip for the Folklore Commission with little more than pen, paper, tin-whistle and bicycle. The songs, music and lore he collected now form part of the National Folklore Collection held in UCD. He continued to collect (and broadcast) songs and music from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall, firstly for the Folklore Commission (1942-47), then Raidió Éireann (1947-51), the BBC (1951-58) and finally intermittently as a presenter on the newlyfounded Teilifís Éireann. perform in public up to his death in 1982. Betty Boardman, County Librarian, commented: “This is a wonderful opportunity for Fingal Libraries to work with the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre, to help tell the story of this remarkable musician who left a lasting legacy of music, song and folklore for the nation’’. A series of concerts and presentations in

honour of Séamus, curated by Ronan Browne, will take place in Fingal Library branches throughout the year and at the Fingal Festival of History in Swords Castle this October. The next event in the series is Music and Madness – Ronan Browne in Conversation with Ivor Browne, which takes place in Blanchardstown Library on Friday April 26th at 2 pm.

Lusk United Celebrates 50th Anniversary Year 2019 marks the 50-year anniversary of Lusk United A.F.C., a community based soccer club that has delivered so much since its foundations during the summer of 1969.The club currently has more than 450 players across 34 teams; which includes schoolboy/ girl teams, a senior men’s team and a children’s academy, catering for 4-7 year olds while the club also implements keep-fit programmes for ladies.To mark this golden milestone of serving its community over the past fifty years, Lusk United A.F.C. have planned a series of events over the coming year, these include: The Celtic FC Camp at Rathmore Road, Lusk this month, a 24 hour football match in June, Street Leagues and a Fun Day in July in Lusk and or Gala (50th Anniversary ) Dinner on September 7th at City North Hotel in Gormanstown, County Meath.Speaking of the landmark year for the club, club Chairperson Emmet Burke expressed his delight that the club is celebrating fifty golden years of being a cornerstone of the Lusk community and expressed his gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the club’s success, history and memories over the past five decades. The club looks forward to the year of festivities ahead which includes a headline event of a ‘Gala Dinner Dance’ in City North Hotel, Gormanstown on Saturday, 7thSeptember.The club would love to hear from anyone who wishes to volunteer in these festive activities, particularly from any past club members. Hundreds compete in Lusk AC 4 mile road race

The wet conditions on Sunday 3rd March couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 685 runners, joggers and walkers who completed the Lusk 4 mile road race. It was a very successful event for Lusk AC and the club would like to thank all the sponsors, race committee, volunteers, the local community and everyone who took part. Winner of the race was Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrocks while Catherina McKiernan of Annalee AC was first in the Women’s race. Lusk AC were delighted to take the men’s team prize and club member Daniel O’Brien was thrilled to win the U20 race. Anyone out and about early in recent weeks will have seen large numbers of runners on the ring road taking part in the 40 day 6am challenge. All are welcome to join us every week day until April 18th. Winner of the Women’s race, Catherina McKiernan.
