O’ Donoghue welcomes Operations Programme of Works in Lusk Lusk Councillor Rob O’Donoghue has welcomed the Operations Programme of Works 2019 from Fingal County Council this month. The Programme of Works outlines projects relating to roads, traffic, open spaces and public lighting that will be carried out by Fingal County Council in 2019. The overall 2019 budget totalled €2.66 million for all of Fingal with €167,000 being disbursed on a variety of projects in the village of Lusk, outlined in the table. Part of the works have already commenced outside of Round Towers GAA club on the Ministers Road. Cllr O’Donoghue commented, “Im delighted to see the Council moving so quickly to install a new pedestrian crossing and

This should go someway to improving safety for the many people using the facilities in Round Towers and is an important issue that both myself and my predecessor Ken Farrell advocated for.” Cllr O’Donoghue said in particular the Chapel Green/ Treen Hill and Ministers Road area are to see road restoration and improvement. He said there are to be works too at the Hands Lane footpath and two new road ramps aat Ministers Road. In addition Cllr O’Donoghue said their will be bilb planting at the Dublin Road Roundabout, and three tiered floral display planters at Main St, Lusk to improve the local open spaces.

By Rebecca Daly Gaelscoil Ros Eo has begun planning their celebrations for their tenth anniversary. The school was set up in 2008 and was held in the Rush Scout Den in Kenure Woods. In February 2009, the school moved to its current location on the grounds of St. Maurs GAA Club in Rush.The school are marking the occasion on June 7th. They plan to hold some shows in the school - as Gaeilge, of course – during the day for the pupils along with some other activities. They also plan to invite their past pupils in to celebrate the anniversary. In the evening, they will invite parents to a celebration in the hall in St. Maurs GAA Club with a barbeque, music and a raffle. To fundraise for this special day, the school are running a monthly cash draw called “an Pota Óir”, which translates to pot of gold. To enter this, participants send €5 in a special envelope into the school. All of the envelopes are then put into a drum and one winner is chosen. The money made from the collection of the envelopes is split into two, with half going to the chosen winner and half to the school. The first draw took place at Christmas, with the school and the winner taking €265 each!The draw is open to everyone and envelopes can be collected in the school.

Community Groups lobby for better transport Community groups from across Fingal have come together to lobby for better public transport infrastructure. Representatives from Malahide, Skerries, Rush and Donabate met recently in a bid to form a group to seek improvements in the stretched public transport links in the area. The meeting was called by Donabate Portrane Community Council. The surge in building and growing employment has meant that it was now proving difficult for commuters to access services to get to work, the meeting was told.The roads network is also congested.Private housing development activity is now very close to 2008 levels, when the housing boom was at its peak, according to recent information from Fingal County Council.Bus services at peak times are at capacity and there was a need for more direct services into the city, the group said. Rail was not a viable option for many in Fingal.There has been little investment in the Northern Commuter rail line in the past few years, the meeting heard. At a recent meeting with Irish Rail community groups were advised that there would be no significant

improvements until at least 2021.This is despite the fact that passenger numbers are up 5% year on year on already, leading to record numbers on this route. The meeting of the Fingal community groups in Donabate was told that transport links must be prioritised in terms of addressing infrastructural deficiencies to the rail and bus network. Donabate Portrane Community Council recently raised these issues at the Fingal County Council’s Public Participation Network planning, housing and transport linkage group meeting. A petition has also been circulated in Fingal calling on the Minister for Transport Shane Ross and National Transport Authority to prioritise and urgently ring-fence the necessary funding required to address the public transport deficits.The meeting was told that Minister For Transport Shane Ross and NTA must ensure the provision of direct bus services into and out of the city centre at peak times to alleviate the congestion on the trains. Donabate Portrane Community Council is calling on all community groups along this rail line to support and share this petition as a matter of urgency.

Vacant Housing Unit established by Fingal County Council Fingal County Council has established a dedicated Vacant Housing Unit to ensure that numbers of empty houses around the county are kept to a minimum.As part of this, a specific Vacant Homes Officer has been detailed to manage the pressing need in bringing these properties back into use as demand for housing continues to grow. Director of Housing Margaret Geraghty said that although the amount of vacant housing stock in Fingal is one of the lowest nationally, there is an urgency to bring vacant stock back into use and this has been recognised by Fingal County Council through its establishment of a Vacant Housing Unit. She said: “It is seldom the case that a property is vacant simply because somebody has decided not to live there. There are a range of reasons why a property might not be in use, so we try to open direct engagement with the property owner, the receiver, the bank or whoever it happens to be, to get the houses back into use.” In terms of its own stock, the local authority has continued to maintain a void rate of less than one per cent during 2018. She added, “We have about 5,500 properties in our stock, which is an increase of 60 per cent over last 10 years. There has been a very substantial increase in social housing across the county, and we manage to maintain a very low vacant property level within our own stock.This is something that we continue to put a lot of focus on in terms of how we go about our business,

Scrumptious protein pancakes just for you Protein has become a bit of a buzz word and although most of us in Ireland DO eat enough protein for what our bodies need, a lot of us tend to eat the majority of our protein in our evening meal. Research has shownthat it is more beneficial to try and eat food sources of protein throughout the day rather than a load all at once! Having protein in this way and especially following exercise that uses our muscles will help to keep our muscle and our bodies lean. And the great news is that applies to everyone, no matter your age. Here is a recipe for ‘protein pancakes’ which uses basic food ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen!

Ingredients

Makes 5 x 100g FULFILLING Pancakes!!! 10 LUSK LOCAL-MARCH 2019

3 eggs 200g oats 300ml high protein milk 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Method 1. Blitz the oats in a blender/nutri bullet until they turn into a flour like mix. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until mixed thoroughly. 3. Heat a non stick pan. 4. When the pan is hot pour some of the mixture on and allow to cook for 2-3 minutes. (Covering the pancakes will help them cook faster). 5. When the edges start to lightly brown and look dry and bubbles start appearing

on the pancake surface,flip the pancake over and cook the other side. Top them off as you like and GOBBLE EM UP!!!! (I love mine with peanut butter, sliced banana and dark chocolate drizzled on top as a scrumptious and VERY satisfying treat!) Joint Supplements – Does my dog need one?

The answer to this may seem quite simple, especially if you have an elderly dog with arthritis, then yes a joint supplement will absolutely be of benefit to your dog. But what about the rest of us with healthy fit animals? A number of factors can come into play when trying to answer this question, health & size of the dog being two that come to mind straight away! Most people will come to the conclusion that their dog is healthy and therefore feeding a joint supplement is probably not necessary until the dog gets older or indeed starts showing signs (slowing down, stiffer movement especially in the morning, or trying to get up after a nap/rest) that they might well need one, but there are many situations where feeding a joint supplement can be considered a wise

investment, as the good old saying goes ‘prevention is better than cure’. Larger dogs as well as working dogs who are more active and put their joints under more pressure & strain would be a prime example where feeding a joint supplement earlier on may be of great benefit to them later on in life. The two main types of joint problems we see in dogs are developmental and degenerative. Developmental joint problems would include hip or elbow dysplasia (a deformity of the hip/elbow joint that occurs during the growth period). Whereas a degenerative joint problem is usually seen as osteoarthritis. A joint Supplement in most cases will certainly help your dog if they suffer from either of these ailments but will also slow down the onset of these if you start

them before your dog shows any signs or symptoms. Joint supplements are very gentle on your dog’s system and not like medication, with most you cannot over dose your dog on as your dog will only absorb what’s needed. There are many different types of joint supplements available, albeit some better than others but the majority of these supplements share two common ingredients, Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Glucosamine aids in the production and rebuilding of cartilage, allowing for smoother joint movement. Chondroitin which is often used in human healthcare for its anti-inflammatory effects, will also help to maintain cartilage and keep ligaments and muscles strong in your furry little friends. If you think your dog might

Busy new year start for Lusk AC Itâ€™s been a tremendously busy start to the year for Lusk AC with many athletes taking part in competitions and races already. Membership numbers are up and our new Fit4life group are doing really well. Congratulations to the 70 juvenile athletes who competed recently at the Dublin Indoors in Abbotstown. Each one of you gave 100% over the two weekends in both track and field. Thanks to the coaches and parents for your help. See you at the Nationals!

Junsa Taekwondo Club News Junsa compete at national and International competitions Junsa Taekwondo has been busy training for the upcoming Irish and international competitions for 2019. This year we are putting extra emphasis on the grass roots of the club by entering National development training sessions and development competitions, all specifically designed to development young Taekwondo athletes . We are also currently keeping our more senior athletes busy with international competitions in Holland, Belgium and Germany and thatâ€™s just the month of March!
