Drumanagh Fort Conservation Plan & Exhibition

Fingal County Councillor Brian Dennehy, Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Grainne Maguire, Chief Archaeologist Michael McDonagh and Fingal’s Community Archaeologist Chritstine Baker at the launch in Rush Library.

The Drumanagh promontory fort conservation plan and exhibition was launched in Rush library on Thursday, 18 October by deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Grainne Maguire. Following a process of public consultation, the Drumanagh Conservation Study & Heritage Plan 2018-2023 contains accessible historical, archaeological, folkloric, and cartographic evidence. It also sets out policies and objectives

for the future protection and management of the site. Speaking at the launch, Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Grainne Maguire said: “I am delighted that the conservation plan and exhibition can be viewed in Rush Library. buttons were found alongside fragments of wine glasses, clay pipes and a range of pottery and food detritus, adding to the story of the Martello.”Evidence of earlier activity was also recovered during the dig. Two shards of pottery uncovered during the excavation have been identified as fragments of amphorae. Used for transporting olive oil between the first and third centuries AD, the pottery originates from the Roman province of Baetica, Southern Spain. Part of a blue ‘melon’ bead found during sieving also has its origins in the Roman world. Christine Baker explains that the discovery of Iron Age materials has been a highlight of the project: “Growing up down the road and having been a student under the late Iron Age scholar, Professor Barry Raftery, I always dreamed of digging Drumanagh. The recovery of two beautifully decorated Iron Age combs has been amazing. However more was to come. Very unexpectedly we uncovered two fragments of human bone. One was identified by our osteologist Dr Linda Lynch as part of a female skull. Radiocarbon dating from Queen’s University has confirmed a date of BC 170- AD 52. It is moving to think of a woman combing her hair here at Drumanagh, 2000 years ago.”

€200,000 grant for new Thomas Ashe Centre Ashe in the Tourism Hub.

Thomas Ashe was born in 1885 into an

Ireland where the Land War was at its height. He attended Ardamore National School and

after completing his education there, he began a five year term as monitor or assistant teacher

in Ardamore.He entered De La Salle Training

College, Waterford in 1905 at the age of twenty to train as a national teacher. After qualification he began his teaching career as principal in

Corduff National School, Lusk, Co. Dublin n

1908. His deep interest in the Irish language and culture led him to become an active member of the Gaelic League, an organisation devoted to

the revival of all things Gaelic. He founded the

Round Towers GAA club in Lusk and the Black Raven Pipe band in Lusk.

Siobhan Kinsella appointed President of Chambers Ireland Siobhan Kinsella, newly appointed as President of Chambers Ireland.

Fingal County Council congratulates former Director and President of Fingal Dublin Chamber Siobhan Kinsella on her appointment as President of Chambers Ireland recently. Siobhan joined the board of Chambers Ireland in 2014 and served as Director of Fingal Dublin Chamber from 2007 to 2017 and as President from 2013 to 2015. She succeeds Niamh Boyle, Managing Director of the Reputations Agency who held the position since 2016. Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid said: “I am delighted to congratulate Siobhan on her appointment as President of Chambers Ireland. I am confident that her experience, skills and professionalism will be hugely valuable in her new role. She has made a significant contribution as Director of Fingal Chambers in representing businesses and I look forward to seeing her continue this work at a national level.”Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin said: “Having served with Siobhan on the Fingal Economic Development & Enterprise SPC and the Drinam Enterprise Centre, I know she is a great ambassador for Fingal and Fingal County Council. My name is Rob O’Donoghue and I am the new Fingal County Councillor from Lusk, following the recent retirement of Ken Farrell. I grew up in our neighbouring town of Rush, and I now live in Gleann Ribh in Lusk.

This includes the immediate prioritisation of the completion of the Phase One of the Sports Hub on the Lusk Ring Road and to ensure that plans for Phase Two, which include further amenities at this location will also be rolled out. This will be achieved in consultation with the 2020 group. I will further ensure that the building of the proposed playground next to the Sports Hub will begin in the short term. I look forward to the opening of the new Community Sports Facility beside Lusk National School which will be available for use by all groups in our community. Rogerstown Regional Park The people of Lusk will be familiar with Balleally Landfill. This facility which was a problem for our community in the past is currently being transformed into a positive public amenity including cycling tracks, walkways and adventure playground. Once opened, this will enhance the

Signs for thought-dogs under control By Claire Stauber ‘It’s the law - all dogs must be leashed’ – from parks to lake beaches, escaping this message on a recent Chicago trip was a no go. There, canine public outings are made easy. It is clear where, if and how dogs can explore the city. Dog owners seem to pay attention, too. Would these notices have made me bat an eyelid before I had a toddler? No. But these posts made me sigh with relief when I took my young son to visit Lincoln Park. Not only that, but back home and having dogs off leash has become a hot topic with local mums in Fingal and it is starting to bug me too. It all started on a summer’s day shell hunting at Malahide Beach. My son and I got to work with buckets in hand and buried our eyes in the washedup sea bed. Then, out of nowhere, a ball of black fluff charges at my son, spins him around until he ends up face down on a pile of wet rocks and soggy seaweed. What seemed like minutes later, the owner saunters over and tries to wrestle the tearaway from us. Classic lines rolled from her tongue – “he is usually great with kids”, “he just wants to play” and “he wouldn’t hurt a fly”. Still in shock, I blurt out that the dog shouldn’t be out of her sight. And with that, the lead was whipped around his neck. Bizarrely the same incident, given not as dramatic, happened weeks later at Portmarnock Beach. Friends have similar stories, mostly from Paddy’s Hill, ironically near Robs Wall playground. Was I just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Fingal County Council introduced Bye-Laws which provide some guidance: Dogs can be off lead at certain times of day, months of the year and if ‘under adequate control’. Someone has got the wrong end of the stick when it comes to what this all means. Avoiding places in fear of rogue dogs or my son growing up scared

senseless of pooches isn’t an option. At the same time, I don’t want to put him in a position where he has a reason to. Perhaps we need to take a leaf out of the Windy City’s book and be more upfront about when and where loving dog owners can let their four-legged companions free. Maybe then, we would all feel safe to enjoy the open spaces Malahide and Fingal in general offers.

Colourful Chicken Curry Forget the chill with warming Curry. As the weather starts to turn chillier, eating foods with spices can help to warm us up from the inside out! Curries are a great dish for cooking in a batch and leaving it to simmer to develop the flavours of the spices. Curry also freezes quite well, providing a flavoursome, nourishing and warming meal for those busy days that you may not have much time to spend in the kitchen. There are so many variations on curry. My recipe is really colourful, tasty, healthy and lean with all the different vegetables.

Colourful chicken curry Makes 4 portions Ingredients •

3-4 (550g) Chicken fillets, chopped into pieces

1 large spanish onion, cut into chunks 3 Garlic cloves, crushed/chopped finely 1 Red pepper, cut into chunks 1 Yellow pepper, cut into chunks 2 whole Fresh red chillis, diced 100g Spinach leaves 200g Natural flavour greek yogurt 1 tin chopped tomatoes 4 tablespoons curry powder 400mls water

Method 1. Prepare and wash the vegetables. Place aside. 2. Prepare and chop the chicken. 3. Heat a non stick pan on a medium heat. If not using a non-stick pan then heat 4 teaspoons of oil in a high sided pan. 4. Add the onion, garlic and fresh chilies and cook on a medium-high

heat. 5. Add the chicken and curry powder. Allow the chicken to cook thoroughly and absorb the flavours from the curry powder. 6.Add the peppers, tin of chopped tomatoes and 400mls hot water. Stir to mix. 7. Simmer for 1 hour until the liquid reduces. In the mean time the condiment such as rice could be cooked as per instructions on the product label. 9.Finally, stir in the spinach leaves and yogurt. Serve and enjoy. €600,000 awarded to seven Fingal projects Balrothery: €100,000 has been allocated towards the enhancement of historic, commercial and recreational core of Balrothery, including the creation of new pedestrian linkages and street parking at the Balrothery Heritage Centre.

Fingal County Council has welcomed the allocation of €600,000 towards seven ambitious projects under the 2018 Town and Village Renewal Scheme.Projects in Lusk, Balrothery, Rush, and Portrane have been included in the allocation of €597,960 awarded to Fingal County Council.Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring announced total funding of €21million under the 2018 Town and Village Renewal Scheme, a key part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development. The funding will allow the Council progress the projects which aim to enhance and rejuvenate each of the seven towns and villages. Amongst the Fingal allocations are: €200,000 – Development of a tourism hub in Lusk on a strategic site within the village, which will include the delivery of a permanent exhibition space themed on the Life and Times of Thomas Ashe, a key nationalist in the 1916 Rising and a central figure in the community of Lusk and the greater Fingal region. The allocations include : €100,000 – Enhancement of historic, commercial and recreational core of Balrothery, including the creation of new pedestrian linkages and street parking at the Balrothery Heritage Centre. €100,000 – Enhancement of Rush Main Street, including a Paint and Shopfront Improvement Scheme, and Signage Provision to rejuvenate and revitalise the main street. €32,000 – Portrane Village enhancements to rejuvenate the appearance of the village and the green space area.

Fingal PPN Co-ordinator represents the youth of Ireland at the UN

Fingal PPN Co-ordinator Jamie Moore addresses the UN General Assembly.

Fingal Public Participation Network co-ordinator Jamie Moore has been appointed a Youth Advocate to the UN General Assembly in New York. Jamie is passionate and experienced in the community and voluntary spheres, and he has been acknowledged for this through awards such as the Gold Gaisce Award, All Island Pride of Place Award and Excellence in Local Government Award.Hailing from Dungarvan, he currently co-ordinates the Fingal Public Participation Network (PPN) in Fingal County Council and sits on the National PPN Advisory Group in the Department of Rural and Community Development. Jamie has been selected together with Aisling O’Boyle, from Dundrum, to join Ireland’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York this Autumn. As Ireland’s UN Youth Delegates for 2018/19 they work closely with Ireland’s Permanent Mission to the UN and represent the youth of Ireland during sessions of the UN committee dealing with human rights issues. The programme is run by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Irish Aid, and the National

Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI), which represents organisations working with over 380,000 young people each year.Jamie is a committed advocate for education and sustainable development, with a focus on youth issues.In a speech to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, October 3, Jamie said: “It is unacceptable that a young person’s education should be dictated by circumstances of their birth. It should instead be reflective of their boundless potential, and cater to their unique needs. The ultimate objective of governments should be to provide the necessary infrastructure and services to ensure wellbeing of young people and empower them to break the cycle of poverty and to become agents of change in their lives, and the lives of their families and communities.” He emphasised the role of youth in shaping the future, calling for, “UN Member States and civil society to take radical steps to deliver on this, working with and for young people to be the generation for change. Young people make up 25 per cent of the world’s population today, but they make up 100 per cent of the future”.

How to avoid a potential tax liability for unmarried couples Considering that the 2016 Census showed that there are over 152,000 cohabiting, unmarried couples in Ireland, it’s worth making sure that any cover is set up correctly to avoid potentially large tax liabilities. Let’s take “John” & “Mary” who live together but are not married. If they have a life policy that covers both of them for €300,000, in the event of a claim, depending on how the premiums were paid, there could be a sizeable tax liability. If John passes away and the premiums were paid from a joint account that both contributed to, then Mary is deemed to have inherited 50% of the proceeds (€150,000). Lusk United AFC growing all the time By Rebecca Daly The town’s soccer club proves that community spirit is essential. Lusk United AFC has been part of the community since 1969. In 2013, the clubhouse moved from its former location on Station Road to Rathmore Road and has grown to 34 teams- including eight girl squads and a senior team. The club runs an academy for children between four and seven on Saturday mornings from 9:15- 10:30am. It costs €3 for one child, €5 for two children from the same family and €6 for three. They also hold an academy for girls from four to nine on Friday evenings from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. New members are always welcome. The talent of the children in this club is undoubtable. Last month, the club’s U11, U12 and U17 teams won their quarter final matches. Parents are encouraged to get involved in the club in any way they can. Not only could they become managers of teams, but they could also help in other ways — for example washing jerseys or collecting money before matches. Lusk United U12s manager and committee member Trevor Russell explains: “A lot parents think they can’t get involved because they might not know about football but there are a lot of things that you can do that helps.” The club is currently being redecorated completely by volunteers. Elba Vargas Russell, the clubs treasurer, explains that it is “an effort of parents, committee members and friends of committee members.” The community can also help by joining the club’s online fundraiser called Forecast5 where they try to predict scores of weekly Premier League matches. Simply sign up with an email address and add Lusk United AFC as the team.For mothers who may want to get involved in the sport, Kick Fit classes are held at the clubhouse for an hour every Tuesday at 6:45pm. These classes are for women over sixteen only. No experience or equipment is needed and the cost is €5. They are run by a qualified personal trainer in conjunction with Fingal County Council.

Rush Fight Academy builds confidence

By Rebecca Daly Speaking to the Head Coach of The Rush Fight Academy, Paul Cowzer, is an enlightening experience as even the scale of their operation is amazing when you think they cater for classes in mixed martial arts, or MMA, Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling and boxing. Based on the Whitestown Road, Rush. They also run a fitness class for ladies and an open class for members that allows people of any age to come and train in any art they want. Rush Boxing Club is part of the academy. Paul said, “The club does not emphasize competing, but rather getting fit and more confident. Some of the members join with the intention of being competitors. Others may join it for self defence or fitness purpose. You can become a member of the club and never compete ever.” However, Paul is asking people to express interest in attending a class based around anxiety and apprehension. From his experience as a coach, a lot of members would open up to him about their anxiety before joining and how the club has helped them. He said, “The point of these classes is to help people develop not only physically but also to help them grow in self-esteem. It’s really good for confidence. If you’re in that sort of environment you get used to it. The rest of your life will just seem to be that bit easier.” He thinks this is especially important for children. The club also offers one on one or private group sessions, where people can concentrate on certain skills. Most classes are taught from a “sports perspective” but in a private session it can be switched to a self defence perspective. Paul said, “Its tailored to the person and what their goal is.” The club is open to anyone who is interested in learning one of the arts, or who just wants to get fit. Jersey Marathon Congratulations to club member, Sean Greensit on completing the Jersey Marathon recently in a smashing 3:23. After his 10th marathon in two years heâ€™s taking a well deserved break for a short while. Well done Sean!

Congratulations and well done to all athletes who completed the 10K, Half Marathon, 20 Mile or Full marathon at the recent EOI Lusk races. It was a great day with the sun shining; many thanks to all the volunteers, the supporters and EOI for hosting it.

Junsa Taekwondo Club News Junsa Taekwondo reach quarter finals in Poland Once again the Junsa Taekwondo group from Fingal did our country proud as their youngsters competed at the highest level in Poland coming away with some outstanding performances particularly from Robbie Weldon Murphy who reached the quarter finals.
