‘Dear Granda’ – A musical success at St Catherine’s NS Rush dedication and motivation of the pupils and staff of St. Catherine’s, but the performance far exceeded them. It was a night that showcased St Catherine’s as a school focused on the arts, on community involvement and most especially on its wonderful pupils. It was a night to be proud of ! Well done the cast and crew of ‘Dear Granda’!

By Emma Mitchell ‘Dear Granda’ is a play written and directed by the very talented St. Catherine’s National School teacher, Ms.Grainne McDermott. She was ably assisted to direct the play by her colleague Ms Rebecca Byrne and the Musical Director was Mr. Eoin Hegarty. The story centres around 12 year old Ryan whose family are forced to emigrate to New York when his father loses his job. Leaving behind his friends is tough but making new friends in America is an even bigger challenge. Twins Tia and Toby certainly do not give Ryan the welcome he is hoping for. In a series of letters to his recently deceased Granda, Ryan explores the feelings of rejection, loss and self esteem.On this emotional rollercoaster he soon discovers that when he digs a little deeper life is rarely black and white and everyone is on their own journey. The plays’ cast was from 5th and 6th classes of St Catherine’s and were supported by stage crew from the same classes, along with St Catherine’s choir and Ukulele Orchestra. Each and every member of St Catherine’s staff gave of their time and helped with everything from seating to set design to rehearsals to gathering prizes for the break. The night was a huge success with every seat filled and a standing ovation at the end. The pupils were so professional, and all the dedication and rehearsals was evident in their performances. Eoin Hegarty wrote original songs and music for the play. The lyrics were sensational and made the hairs stand up on arms throughout the audience! The Ukulele Orchestra was in tune, on time and added hugely to the experience. The choir-as always- were so so good, their voices in the group songs raised the roof !! Expectations for the night were high, as we, as parents, are so aware of the

O’Brien opposes bus route changes Darragh O’Brien TD says he will be opposing changes in the North Dublin area. Deputy O’Brien said recently, “ I am opposed to the proposed changes by Government and the National Transport Authority to the bus routes in our area. These changes are part of the BusConnects proposed overhaul of the bus network, which whilst increasing the total number of buses in Dublin overall, would mean a loss of direct services to and from Rush and Lusk to the City Centre.” He said, “Under these changes, the 33 would be replaced by the nondirect 285/282/A route. This route would not go direct to Dublin City Centre. You would have to change in Swords, and then Santry. This would mean the 33a and 33x would be scrapped. We believe that rather than reducing its services Rush and Lusk need more capacity on the 33a and 33x routes making use of the M1 and Port Tunnel.” The Fianna Fail TD went on to say, “ These proposals are not final. The NTA will be accepting public views from 16th July to 14th September and submissions should be made to consultations@ nationaltransport.ie. The full proposal can be seen at www. busconnects.ie. We would encourage you to make your own submission, and the more submissions the better. Myself and Cllr Brian Dennehy will be putting in a submission to maintain the well-used 33, 33a and 33x, as we believe that Rush and Lusk needs increased direct and peak services on routes making use of the M1 and Port Tunnel. Lusk and Rush have new Councillor The Lusk and Rush are have a new Labour Councillor, Robert O’Donoghue and we have been speaking to him. Having established that he is a local lad that has already worked in the community, we asked him to tell us about his background and ambitions for the area. “I currently work in an organisation that supports charities and state agencies. We help them to improve the supports they provide to individuals and families. My work with community organisations across Ireland has given me a deep understanding of many of the challenging issues affecting our community today. “ I grew up in our neighbouring town of Rush, and I now live in Gleann Ribh in Lusk.It is my intention to work with you and for you, the people of Lusk, to improve our community. I look forward to learning your concerns and priorities and developing some innovative ways to address them. I also intend to progress the projects put in place by my predecessor Ken Farrell. This includes the immediate prioritisation of the completion of the Phase One of the Sports Hub on the Lusk Ring Road and to ensure that plans for Phase Two, which include further amenities at this location will also be rolled out. This will be achieved in consultation with the 2020 group. I will further ensure that the building of the proposed playground next to the Sports Hub will begin in the short term. I look forward to the

opening of the new Community Sports Facility beside Lusk National School which will be available for use by all groups in our community. (This project was led, driven and delivered by Ken).

Rogerstown Regional Park

The people of Lusk will be familiar with Balleally Landfill. This facility which was a problem for our community in the past is currently being transformed into a positive public amenity including cycling tracks, walkways and adventure playground. Once opened, this will enhance the wellbeing of our whole community and I am fully committed to ensuring that this facility will be accessible to the public in the very near future. The above are just some of the issues that I will be focusing on as I commence my role as your local representative. I feel privileged to have been given this opportunity to be your new Councillor and look forward to meeting you on a one to one level over the coming months. I look forward to hearing your issues and aspirations for the town. Following in the footsteps of Ken, the promise I will make to you is to do my very best.”

Fingal County Council launch fleet of Electric vans

Mayor Lavin launches the new electric vans with Council CEO Paul Reid and officials

Fingal County Council’s five new electric vehicles were launched by Chief Executive Paul Reid and Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin at Malahide Castle recently.The fleet of fully electric Citroen Berlingo vans to be used by staff are the beginning of Fingal’s transition to electrification.

More electric vehicles are set to follow in a commitment to promoting sustainability and tackling climate change. Fully electric vehicles provide a reduction in air pollution and carbon emissions tackling global warming whilst offering whole life cost

savings. They require less maintenance and offer the drivers a quieter, smoother, more enjoyable driving experience. They are very functional and are superior at accelerating and climbing than standard petrol or diesel powered vehicles. During the launch, Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin said: “Fingal’s environment and natural landscape are extremely important to the Council, Fingal’s residents and its visitors. It is vital that we take steps to protect and preserve them and this initiative is just one example of the efforts being made to do so. These vehicles are also more cost effective and easier to maintain, allowing us to become more efficient.”With twelve dedicated charging points recently installed across five Fingal offices and depots, each of the vehicles can cover 170 kilometres on a full charge, and take just 30 minutes to completely recharge the batteries at the installed fast charging points. Further developments on this journey currently being worked on are the installation of charging points in Fingal’s street lighting columns and Smart Bench technology.The five electric vans are now operational and being used across the county.

Fingal Leader Partnership allocated 6 places under the Rural Social Scheme

Friends of Autism/ADHD Ltd are urgently looking for volunteers to help us in all of our Charity Shops. Two shops are located in Laurena House , 40 Dublin Street , Balbriggan (furniture store and clothes store) , one shop is located at Unit C6 (outer ring) Millfield shopping Centre Balbriggan and the fourth shop is located at 21 Thomas Hand Street , Skerries. Volunteers are needed to cover either a morning shift or an afternoon shift, but any time you can give would be appreciated. Our Millfield shop is open on a Thursday 12-8, Friday 11-5 and Saturday 11-5, the other stores are open Monday-Friday 10 am to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 5pm. A sample of the duties involved include sorting donations, displaying of stock, till work, and helping customers with their purchases. The furniture store would also require help with van deliveries and collections. Any training needed will be provided, and we promote a healthy, happy all-inclusive working environment. The benefits to participants are that the scheme provides for Farmer / Fishing friendly part-time work in the participants locality at times that does not interfere with their farming/fishing activities. The minimum weekly payment is â‚Ź220.50. The spouse/civil partner/cohabitant/ child or sibling can work on the scheme for 19.5 hours per week if the farmer / fisherperson does not wish to take part. Rented accommodation and income protection By Dave Kavanagh There are obvious differences between those that have mortgages and own their homes and those that rent their accommodation, such as getting a deposit together to purchase a property and qualifying for a mortgage, versus being able to move location at relatively short notice. For those in rented accommodation, there are a few other points worth considering: If someone owns their property and runs into temporary, financial difficulty, for example an injury or illness that keeps them off work for a while, there are arrangements that can be made with their lender for a short term, leaving them in a position where there is no immediate impact on their living arrangements. However, for those renting privately, if the same event occurred, they would most likely be evicted if they could not pay rent on time and in full. When someone cannot work due to illness or injury, depending on their employer, they may be paid for a certain period of time, they may be paid “at the employer’s discretion” or they may not be paid at all. Yet, ironically, a higher proportion of people that own their homes have things like income protection or specified illness cover in place. One of the reasons for this, is that at the time of going through a mortgage

application process, they are usually exposed to some degree of financial advice, whether from the lender, a broker, or a financial adviser, who may have made them aware of the options available to protect against the unexpected loss of income (or the financial impact of a serious illness). Having not gone through this process, many of those renting are not aware of these same options, despite being more vulnerable in rented accommodation. Another school of thought is that people who are making a commitment to purchase their own home, are more likely to plan for such events so that their long-term plans of owning their home mortgage-free, are not compromised. Whereas those in rented accommodation may not have given the same consideration to their long-term financial security. In the current climate of expensive rents and very limited property vacancies, the impact on anyone in rented accommodation suffering a loss of income is even more problematic. It’s well worth taking a little time to consider how you would be impacted and investigate what options there are for you. In basic terms, the earlier (younger) someone commences income protection and/or serious illness cover, the cheaper the premiums will be. Income protection will pay a portion of someone’s income if they are unable to work due to illness or injury and suffer a loss of income, after a deferred period and until they can return to work. Specified illness cover will pay out a tax-free

Drogheda is putting the final touches to its Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann preparations ahead of what is expected to be the biggest event in the towns history this coming August. A full programme of events has been announced for the forthcoming Fleadh. Among those performing are Martin Hayes & Denis Cahill, Hothouse Flowers, Damien Dempsey and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra to name just a few. Chairperson of the Fleadh Executive Committee Lolo Robinson said, “This will be a Fleadh to remember, we have been working tirelessly in ensure that Drogheda and County Louth will reap the benefits of this international celebration of music, dance and Irish language”. Lolo Robinson commended the hard work, commitment and professionalism of the many voluntary groups, particularly the people of Drogheda for the enthusiasm shown as Drogheda gets Fleadh ready. Attracting more than 400,000 attendees, the Fleadh is the world’s largest celebration of Irish music, language, song and dance. It attracts close to twice the number of people who attended the Irish Ploughing Championships 2017. Drogheda is expected to reap huge economic benefits from the week-long event, its estimated that €40m will flow into County Louth as a result of the festival. The longer term benefits

will include increased awareness of Drogheda and County Louth as a tourist destination and forging strong community ties. Drogheda is perfectly positioned to capitalise on the population numbers in Dublin and Belfast. Its strategic location just off the M1 and its first class public transport links makes it the perfect location for visitors to travel to with ease. Mum and daughter fashion shopping in Swords

By Fashion Editor Carina Cunningham Welcome guys and girls to ‘Community Local’s’ first Mum and daughter day out shopping shoot. I had asked in past if any of you out there would like to be styled. Anna Waters took me up on the offer and in fact emailed me asking if I could go shopping with herself and her lovely daughter Ciara. So we took it one step further and decided to do a photo shoot in one of the local fashion shops. Anna and Ciara both live in Swords so The Pavilions was the obvious choice. Anna is in her early forties and Ciara is nineteen, they are both stunning ladies and great fun to style. I chose the Vila fashion store mainly because their shop window is always so well co-ordinated and the colours are very striking. The way they colour block them with denim playing a relaxed part and their mixing up layers is very clever and ageless. These looks really can be worn from young to older lady. In fact teamed up with a posh hat they could be worn to the races or even a casual wedding. Their sizes are very user friendly 14 LUSK LOCAL-AUGUST 2018

and look stunning on curvy ladies also. We enjoyed going a little crazy taking photos in the shop window, at the fitting rooms, and even in front of the Vila light up image in-store boxes. It was a great day all round and very pleasurable shopping. Thestaff in Vila really do know how to team up their collection to create super relaxed colourful outfits from their extensive stock. We were lucky to have Ava ‘s attention and direction on what works for all ages shapes and figures. I think she hit the nail on the head here and guided us very successfully. Over the next few months I will be doing a face and hair transformation plus a few good men getting into flashy threads and looking sharp. Until next time, many thanks, Vila and to Anna and Ciara. Mega Mango Chilli Chicken Salad “This recipe is bursting full of colour and flavour and suits this Summery time of year as it is a light but tasty and satisfying meal. The marinated chicken is so succulent and the chilli kick complements the sweetness of the mango and the crunchy freshness of the fruit and vegetables in the salad. It can be made for a BBQ or for an evening meal and leftovers can be enjoyed the following day for lunch!

Ingredients

• 8 cherry tomatoes, cut into halves • 4 handfuls salad leaves • 1 mango, skin removed and cut into chunks • 60g pine nuts • Juice of 1 lime For the chicken marinade • 2 tablespoons Chilli powder • 1 tablespoon Paprika • Pinch of black pepper • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Serves 2

Method

• 3 chicken fillets, diced • 2 peppers, cut into strips • 1 red onion, cut into slices • 1/2 large cucumber, cut into half slices • 110g beetroot, cut into small chunks • 2 chillies, sliced

1. Mix the above marinade ingredients really well in a bowl. Add the diced chicken and cover in the marinade. Leave to one side. 2. Prepare the salad ingredients as described in the ingredients list except

for the lime juice and assemble the cut/sliced vegetables and fruit in the serving dish. 3. Cook the marinated chicken on a BBQ, grill or in a pan. 4. Add the cooked chicken to the prepared salad. Pour the lime juice on top and mix to distribute evenly. Enjoy! St Maurs GFC Rush club notes

The club camps run from 14-17th Aug (hurling/camogie) and the 21st24th Aug (football). Camps are open to boys and girls between the ages of 4-12. Non-members are also welcome. Boys hurling continues throughout the summer with the Camaint competition, a series of blitz style matches against other Dublin clubs throughout the month of July, culminating in finals day in Parnell Park in August. We finish off the summer in style with the football mini-leagues. This event runs for 3 nights in September and is always a well supported, successful event.

Volunteers wanted for groups in Lusk Volunteers needed the run a Parent & Toddler group in Lusk. We need to get a few volunteers who would be willing to run this group in a morning in the Community Cottage.The volunteers will need to be GARDA vetted and first aid training. The Fingal childcare committee will arrange the training for them. Grants are available each year to help with running costs, so if you can spare a morning please contact Pauline 087-3951716 for details. Junsa Taekwondo Club News Junsa Taekwondoâ€™s second group for granding on the 30th of June 2018. These guys are more experienced and are a little older with beginners up to the age of 13. Master Russell noted that this group of white to yellow belts was one of the most studious groups of students. A very strong grading from everyone.

Lusk AC -Donabate parkrun takover!

Newbridge House was a sea of white and blue on a Saturday morning recently as Lusk AC took over Donabate parkrun. Numerous members of the club stepped forward to ensure a full volunteer roster including no less than 8 pacers. The finish line balloons in Lusk colours were a nice touch and the event certainly enhanced the clubâ€™s growing reputation. Well done to all who took part.

Ironman Frankfurt

Huge congratulations to Mo McDermott who recently completed the gruelling Ironman in Frankfurt. This consisted of a 3.8km swin, 180km cycle and 42km (marathon) run. Well done Mo!

Surprise visit!

Team Championships in Tullamore

Congratulations and well done to the 5 teams in Tullamore recently. Some great performances in running, jumping and throwing, conditions were tough and so was the competition. Keep up the hard work and well done Eoin McGurk, Harvey Smith, Sarah Rigney, Grace Kingston, Tia Kodia and Eimear McBride.

We had a surprise visit from Miranda Tchuetchoua recently to Rathmore Road. Miranda represented Ireland in the Hammer at the European Championships in Hungary. Miranda (a member of Lusk AC) is based in Canada but has always kept her links with her first club. She was very generous to spend time with club members; particularly our juvenile members who gained valuable knowledge from a coaching session with Miranda. We look forward to her continued success!

Malahide 10k

It was 10am and the temperature was 23 degrees on a Sunday morning at the start of the Malahide 10k in the Castle grounds. The course around the park took in forest trail and sweltering open grass sections but our Lusk AC crew were strong throughout. Well done everyone who participated.

Energia 24hr Challenge 2018

Lusk AC fielded 3 relay teams at the Belfast 24 hour event at the weekend. This entailed each member of the 4 person teams completing a 2 hour run 3 times during the 24 hours with a 6 hour break in between each run. It was an amazing weekend during which friendships were formed as the camaraderie was second to none. Everyone dug in to rack up the miles on the 1,652 metre loop in Victoria Park. It was warm during the day runs but each team member also got the opportunity to run under the moonlit sky. Sleep was at a premium but all came away having thoroughly enjoyed the event although most may take some persuading to sign up again next year. Well done to the 5 club members who took part and the visitors who helped us to complete the teams. Thanks to Waterstown Warriers, Star of the Sea and all the DBRC gang. We also want to give a special mention to the fantastic support team who looked after the teams superbly throughout the 24 hours.
