Editor’s Note Starting in September For most kids the start of a new school years brings excitement and anticipation but some are frustrated when they enter a classroom- the kids who are confident and competent on weekends and holidays begin to withdraw. These are the children who try to scrunch down in their seats, hoping to be invisible. They hold tightly to the belief that “if I can’t see the teacher, the teacher can’t see me.” They make excuses and messes - but seldom eye contact. School is a challenge for them, but also for their parents and teachers. When it comes to teaching one size simply does not fit all but time and resources are limited. One key toward change is using encouragement and reward rather than criticism and punishment - to bolster their belief in themselves. September marks a new year with new possibilities. Let them start over. For some kids, this may be the greatest gift you will give them all year.

Sliabh na mBan on way to Lusk

Sliabh na Mban, Michaels Collins’ armoured Rolls Royce vehicle, will be part of the 100th anniversary events in Lusk marking the death of Thomas Ashe There will be an all day event on September 30th, organised by Linda Neary and the Lusk Thomas Ashe Commemoration group, on the 100th anniversary of the death of Thomas Ashe.

Thomas Ashe Vigil Fingal Remembers will be holding a black flag vigil at the new 1916 monument on Monday, September 26, to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Lusks’ most famous adopted son, Thomas Ashe. Non party political event. The group will also mark the anniversary by erecting large placards around the village.

Thomas Ashe has a direct connection with Lusk having founded the Black Raven Pipe Band and nearby Corduff where he was a local teacher. Thomas Ashe commanded volunteers in the area of Ashbourne Co Meath in the Easter Rising of 1916 “I am delighted to have been able to assist Linda Neary and the Lusk Thomas Ashe

Sailing to success The Irish Power Kite & Sandyacht Association will host the European Championships 2017 - marking the first major International Sandyacht competition to be held on the Island of Ireland since the 21st European Championships were in Northern Ireland in 1983. This is the first time in the event’s 55 year history that the event will be held in the Republic of Ireland. The event will see 110 sandyacht pilots from 16 countries including (3 non-European countries). Pilots will range in age from 17 to 76 years. The venue for EC2017 will be the beaches of Laytown and Bettystown, County Meath, from September 10-15.The event will bring over 2,000 plus tourist nights to the East Meath area and generate a lot of tourism for Ireland’s Ancient East. The event is being used to showcase the area and to deliver a successful event for FISLY, with the intent of getting Ireland onto the schedule of future international sandyachting events and possibly hosting a World Championship event at some stage in the future.

Temporary swimming ban on two beaches Fingal County Council has issued temporary ‘Do Not Swim’ notices for Loughshinny and Rush South Beaches as a result of high levels of microbial contamination found in routine samples taken at both beaches on 21st August. The likely cause of the deterioration in the water quality at both locations is suspected sewage from wastewater treatment plant/ sewer network/CSO. Investigations are on-going. The Health Safety Executive has advised that swimming at the beaches be prohibited until levels return to normal. The beaches remain open but beach users are asked to respect the temporary ‘Do Not Swim’ notice as it has been put in place to ensure that the health of bathers is not compromised. Members of the public intending to enter the water at any beach in Ireland are advised to check the water quality in advance by accessing the EPA website at https://www.beaches.ie/# or checking the notice board at the entrance to each beach.

From Fukushima to Rush

Councillor Darragh Butler and Adam Butler with the Japanese Children Project made up of children who survived the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 visiting the Rush Harbour Festival as guests of Rush Scouts. Rush Scouts, The Rush Harbour Festival, ALA Markets & Events and Fingal County Council made them welcome and gave them a great time.

Multi-agency operation targets fly-tipping Fingal County Council and the Gardai are involved in a multi-agency operation which targets fly-tipping in Baldoyle. Checkpoints have been established at random locations and times across the area with officers from Fingal County Council’s Environment Enforcement Unit being assisted by Gardaí from Howth Garda Station, Divisional Crime Task Force, Traffic Corps and Armed Response Unit. The checkpoints will continue over the coming weeks. The aim of the checkpoints was to identify unauthorised and bogus refuse collectors committing offences as well as members of the public who are availing of the illegal service being offered. Both the unauthorised collectors and their clients can be subject to prosecution with fines and possible imprisonment under the Waste Management Act 1996 and the Litter Pollution Act 1997.

As a result of the Baldoyle operation, Fingal County Council made several seizures and is now actively seeking to identify the owners of this rubbish in order to prosecute them. A Fingal County Council spokesperson said: “Illegal dumping across Fingal is a serious issue and we are adopting a hard-line attitude in relation to prosecuting unauthorised collectors as well as those who are employing them to dump their rubbish. The check-points in Baldoyle were extremely successful and we are grateful to An Garda Siochana for their support in mounting this operation. We would appeal to the public to report incidents of fly-tipping to the Gardaí or to ourselves on our hotline number which is 1800 20 10 93.” Cllr. Darragh Butler welcomes the initiative and has called for it to be extened to cover the entire Fingal area.

Memories of a great Summer

Remember Us has just finished its six-week summer camp which ran for 4 days and 1 night each week. Many families got a much needed break when their sons and daughters were out on the camp for some days up to 8 hrs. Outings included a trip to Navan Adventure Centre where members took part in Footgolf, golf driving range, human foosball, arts and crafts with Bernie Davis and historical high jinx in Clonard house in Mullingar. Those taking part tried their hand at tennis in the Balrothery tennis club and cricket in North county cricket club and Balbriggan cricket club. They also headed off to The Irish Military War museum in Collon where they got to ride a real tank. The wax museum was on the agenda another day along with W5 in Belfast. Astro park in Coolock was a big hit as was Clara Lara fun park in Wicklow. The camp finished up with a closing party in the Bracken Court Hotel where entertainment included a magician and disco. The Lord Mayor of Fingal, Mary McCamley, Brendan Ryan TD, and Cllr Grainne Maguire popped in to say hello. Spider-Man dropped in and members got their photo taken with him by Green Screen Photography. “I would like to thank all the volunteers, venues, tutors etc., above for making us feel so welcome and for their support.” says Nora Roban Remember Us founder. “Also Gormanstown coaches and Nifty and their drivers for being so patient with us when we were not in a hurry home on our days out. Castleland Community Centre for the use of their facilities, and Fingal County Council for their grant of €2,000 towards the summer camp.”

â€œWe are delighted that Lusk CC TY Student of the Year Niamh Rafferty has be selected as one of the eight finalists by Transition Year Ireland in an National Award, the Richard Burke TY Personified Award. The award aims to identify the student in Ireland that best represents the Mission and Aims of Transition Year and who has been proactive in fulfilling their own potential. Niamh fully embraced transition year. She took part in work experiences such as the Royal College of Surgeons and Cooke Academy to name a few. She also took part in many competitions like AIB Build a Bank, SCI

fest, Student Enterprise and Young Social Innovators. She was a volunteer within the school community, being a mentor to first years but also the local community both with Gaelscoil and visiting Lusk Community Unit every Friday with pensioner pals. She received a overall Distinction and obtained her Gasice Bronze medal. Naimh is up against stiff competition from all over Ireland so to be even nominated among the eight finalists is a massive achievement. She is a role model for her peers and we wish her the best of lusk in the final which take place on the 12 of September at the TY Expo.â€? Picture attached

Newry to Skerries cycle - part 2 Cyclists having completed the Anna Walsh Memorial 80k Cycle from Newry to Skerries arriving back at the Blue Bar. The event was in aid of Skerries Youth Support Services and Newry Helping the Homeless. Junsa taekwondo recently hosted a 2 day training camp with a guest instructor, Master > Cha Dong Min , Master Cha is a two time Olympic medalist from Korea. This was such an opportunity for our students.

Volunteers Needed Please for our Growing Club National Community Games Not everyone was taking it easy over the summer. We were well represented by our juvenile athletes at the National Community Games. Grace Kodia took part in the U14 Shot Putt and Grace McKenna in the U16 Discus. The girls had very strong performances at the games; well done. Congratulations to Kirsty Seaton who took 5th in 80m hurdles; a great race - it was very tight. Thomas was 6th in Duathlon, well done.

If you’re thinking about joining us please don’t hesitate - you’ll be hooked after a very short time! We have a brand new Fit4Life group starting this month. Perfect for those of you who have never ran before or those returning to running after a break. All groups (juveniles and adults) train on

We have found children joining our club are often lacking in the basic skills like running, jumping, catching but improve very quickly. However, it is up to parents to make changes in their lifestyles. Lusk AC is a growing club that has the skills to create a well-rounded individual but we always need parents to come forward to help us. This ensures all the children of the community have an opportunity to run and jump and have fun in doing this. Currently, many of our children train only on Tuesdays due to lack of parents and coaches. If we had 10 more parents come forward then it would be possible to provide Thursday training also for all these children. We are only limited to what we do because of volunteers not because children aren’t interested. Can you give one hour a week? No experience needed. Dublin Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon There was a mixture of nervous tension and excitement in the air as our runners boarded the Team Lusk bus at 7am the morning of the Rock ‘n Roll. This is a unique event with bands playing at every mile marker as well as a finish line concert in the Phoenix Park. The music stopped for a moment on North Wall quay at 8:30 so we could here the starter’s gun and off went the 30+ club members in pursuit of a PB or maybe an enjoyable experience. Conditions were perfect and there were some great performances from many club members. Lusk AC provided a number of volunteers for the event including 3 pacers. Thanks and well done to all as well as anyone who came out to show their support.

Ingredients • 4 chicken fillets • 60g feta cheese • 100g spinach leaves • 1 large onion diced • 2 cloves garlic • 10 cherry tomatoes, halved • 30g chopped chorizo • 500g wholewheat pasta • 200g Pesto (can buy or make as below) • Ingredients for pesto: • 1 handful basil leaves (approx 10g) • 2 cloves garlic • 70g pine nuts • 60ml olive oil • 50g parmesan cheese

‘Pesto’nishing Pasta Method

“Back to school and back to routine makes this an optimal time of year for getting into good habits from the get go! A lot of eating healthy comes from good food prep such as meal planning, shopping lists, batch cooking and making use of leftovers. This pasta recipe below is quick and easy to throw together and is boasting full of energy and colour to help fuel the body back into school, work and whatever other life demands after the summer break. Make a batch for an evening meal and use up leftovers for lunch the following day. 2 meals done in 1. Pop by to my Biabites cooking demos in October at the Balbriggan Food Festival” Method: 1. Cook the pasta. 2. Gently heat the onion and garlic in a pan with a tablespoon of pesto. Turn up the heat and add chopped chicken. Add another tablespoon of pesto and stir occasionally until chicken is cooked. 3. Add in tomatoes and chorizo and take off the heat. 4. Add in remaining pesto, cooked pasta, spinach and feta cheese and stir well to mix altogether. To make the pesto; blitz the basil leaves and pine nuts in a powerful blender/food processor. Then add the garlic and parmesan and blitz more. Slowly add the olive oil bit by bit while still gently blitzing in order to help it blend in. Scrape down the sides of the blender throughout the blitzing to ensure all ingredients mix thoroughly. Enjoy and see you in October!!
