Editor’s Note August has a tendency to fly by, particularly where children are concerned. School bells will soon be ringing so it is time to shift into high gear to get kids ready. It’s time to consider turning off the television and limiting computer time - soon enough it will be time for homework so it makes sense to put some order on the evenings. Ditto for bedtime! Kids are often too busy playing to recognize that they are tired. Putting them to bed earlier may not make you the most popular parent, but their growing bodies will thank you, especially with the earlier wake up time! Wake your kids up at what will be their regular morning wake-up time for school. And put away the sugary cereals and make a healthy breakfast part of your daily habit. Buying school supplies like backpacks, binders, and pencil cases holds a certain magic for getting kids excited about hearing the school bell ring again. Start eating lunch at the same time as the school does. You can easily help your child’s stomach get on a schedule so that little bellies don’t grumble while they are in a classroom. You want them focused on learning, not on their hunger.

A Tragic Tale of Loss and Death

Remembering Muriel MacDonagh (Widow of Proclamation signatory Thomas) who died off Shenick Island one hundred years on 9th July 1917. The death of Muriel MacDonagh, drowned while swimming off the south beach, Skerries, in 1917 just a year after the execution of her husband, Thomas MacDonagh, was recently marked by a series of events in the town. In July 1917, the National Aid Association - a group which helped the families of the 1916 leaders -had rented a house in the town of Skerries for the use of relatives of the Rising leaders for a short holiday. The group staying in Skerries included Muriel and her sister Grace (widow of Joseph Plunkett), Lily Connolly ( James Connolly’s widow) and their daughter, Ina, Agnes Malin (Michael Malin’s widow) and their son Joseph. The Muriel MacDonagh Centenary Weekend, saw a series of talks in the Old School. John Dorney, looked at the year 1917; a year of seismic change across Ireland in the aftermath of the Rising and the war still raging on the European continent. Marie Bashford-Synott, local historian and member of Skerries Historical Society, presented a paper that delved into the lives of the women of Skerries who served in the ranks of Cumann na mBan during the revolutionary period. Liz Gillis, historian of early 20th century Ireland and author of several books, presented her accounts of the life and times of the widows of the executed leaders of the insurrection of Easter Week 1916. Gerard Shannon, of Skerries Historical 4

Society and organised of the Centenary Weekend, presented his research and findings concerning the death of Muriel MacDonagh off Shenick Island. Who was Muriel? How did she meet Thomas MacDonagh, and how did she face life as a widowed mother of two after the Easter Rising? And what brought her to Skerries that fateful July? Gerard also be formally launched the “Skerries War of Independence 1919-21 Commemorative Committee” in order to form a local group to mark in an appropriate and dignified way the events of the revolutionary decade and their effect on Skerries; including the creation of a permanent memorial in the town. The Irish Volunteers Dublin Brigade Commemorative organisation brough their travelling exhibition to the Old School with memorabilia, replicas, artefacts, photographs and other items related to the revolutionary decade. A commemorative march led by a piper started from the Sea Memorial (where Muriel is listed on a plaque) to a designated point on the South Strand. There, several speakers recalled the tragedy; including a reading of the words of Fr. Joseph Mallin SJ, the sole surviving child of an executed Easter Rising leader and who was on the South Strand that fateful day. Rush Festival Committee has decided to stage this year’s Rush Harbour Festival in the Harbour Park from Friday, August 4, to Monday, August 7. Rush has had a long history of staging summer festivals, like the May Bush Festival which ran during the 1970s and 1980s, and the Harbour Festival, which was started in 2010, and has become the major August Bank Holiday festival in the North County and a source of muchneeded funds for community projects. Since it was founded in 1974, Rush Community Council has endeavoured to co-ordinate the efforts of various community groups under one umbrella and to unite them in their endeavours. The Community Council and the town’s various community groups are made up of volunteers who give of their time to make Rush a better place to live in and today’s residents are reaping the dividends of that work. Rush Community Council and the Rush Tourism Committee look forward to welcoming the residents of the town, as well as visitors from near and far, to this year’s event over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Blake’s Cross Safety Issues Brendan Ryan, Labour Party TD for Dublin Fingal, has called for a traffic safety assessment at Blake’s Cross after a string of accidents in recent weeks. “The junction at Blake’s Cross on the old N1 and the road to Lusk/Rush/Skerries has seen a string of vehicle accidents in recent weeks,” said Deputy Ryan. “The dangers of this junction have been well known for years but the recent spike in accidents is a major cause for concern. I am calling on Fingal County Council to undertake a safety assessment of the junction with a view to drawing up a safer traffic management plan for this junction. “Traffic volumes have increased in the last couple of years and this important intersection in Fingal needs to be upgraded to take into account for this increase. Blakes Cross is the primary entry point for residents of Rush, Lusk and Skerries. It is vital an assessment is done urgently to ensure as best as possible, the safety of drivers at this important point. I have written to the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council regarding my concerns,” he added.

Once again the Flavours of Fingal was a big success and this year it was a free event with a reasonable €5 parking fee. A fun weekend for all the family, it started on Friday evening with live music, followed by the major event on Saturday and Sunday within the grounds of Newbridge House. Now in its sixth year, Fingal County Council, Fingal Farmers

Group and Fingal Tourism got together to create family entertainment. The best part was the kids area with big inflatable bouncy castles, my kids had a ball. We treated the family to donuts and coffee from one of the many vendors dotted around the place. To keep the children entertained there was an arts and crafts table and also face painting which went down a treat. Just

beyond the inflatable area was the Supermilk Wild Air run. For those of you interested in cars and tractors, the Flavours had Vintage cars and many tractors on show. There was an agricultural display of livestock and many equestrian shows and competitions. In the courtyard area, a stage was set up and Cobbe’s café were busy serving teas and coffees to customers. As the family strolled around the walled gardens it was great to see the many stalls selling their arts and crafts. In order to cool down on a hot summer’s day, a craft beer village were selling their selection of beers. The whole weekend combined the sights and sounds of a traditional show with a fantastic family and food experience. Woolly Wards petting farm arrived to the delight of the children in the big village barn and everyone loved the sheep dog trials as well as the magic shows and living history displays. Within the walled gardens celebrity chefs got to work with cookery demonstrations. Just beyond the House there was a Great War Society World War display and real live Viking re-enactments as well as jousting and Falconry displays. A World War hospital and soldiers and tanks were on display, I even got to hold a war pistol. With so much to do and see, the Flavours of Fingal was a great weekend for all the family.

Lusk United Summer Camp

Every year the Lusk United FAI summer camp is a huge success and this year was no exception. With the support of Fingal County Council new goalposts were purchased, sparking increased interest in Goalkeeping - from just two U9s wanting to be in goal there are now upwards of 30! The Club now has a Goalkeeping Academy every Monday and the Super Celtic International Academy Camp coming up in October. “The amount of fun these camps bring to our community is phenomenal and not to mention comraderie and passion,” says Peter Thompson. “Working on keeping teenagers busy instead of hanging around corners is top of our agenda.

Classic Times for Round Towers

The Thomas Ashe Park Golf Classic, in aid of Round Towers Lusk GAA Club took place in early July in Beaverstown Golf Club. The event raised funds to continue the development of the club. Winners on the day were John O’Neill, Sean Reilly, Cathal Hurley & David Boylan. There was

a great turnout of 22 teams. The club also ran Cul Camps and had a visit from Senior Dublin players Ciaran Kilkenny and EmerNí Éafa. Well Done to all the little superstars!

‘24 Marathons in 24 Days Challenge’ Hugh congratulations to Shane Finn and his team from Dingle, Co Kerry who just completed this gruelling challenge. He ran 24 marathons; starting in Donegal and taking in every county in Ireland to finish in Dingle. Lusk AC were very proud to help Shane along the way and run part of his marathon route as he passed by Lusk. Shane and his team have raised over €100,000 for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland. Ingredients • 600g Meat of your choice cut into pieces such as: chicken, beef, pork or tofu • Vegetables of your choice such as: Red onion, peppers, courgette, mushrooms • 1 tin coconut milk • 4 tablespoons smooth peanut butter • 2 tablespoons curry paste • Juice of 1 lime • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 5 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped finely • About 5cm ginger, peeled and chopped finely • Small wooden skewers Tip: use whole coconut milk as the light versions mainly consist of water and won’t give the nice creamy, smooth consistency for the Satay sauce!

Method

“The smell of BBQ in the air just tastes of Summer but if you haven’t managed to see much of the BBQ so far, maybe this recipe will inspire you to heat up the grill before the weather starts to chill!! This dish is relatively easy and definitely one that the whole family could take pride in! You will probably have most of these ingredients and you will be able to use them up in so many other recipes. Mix the ginger, garlic, curry paste, peanut butter, soy sauce, honey and lime juice together. 2. Stir coconut milk into the mixture bit by bit and mix well to create a creamy smooth consistency. 3. Add the meat/tofu and chopped vegetables to 2/3 of the satay mix. Keep the other 1/3 of the satay as a dipping sauce! 4.Leave the mixture to marinate for up to 3 hours in the fridge. 5. Thread the meat/tofu and vegetables onto the skewers. 6. Grill the skewers for approximately 15 minutes, turning occasionally. Dip into the sauce saved from earlier. 7. Heat any leftover mixture on a pan until the meat and veg is cooked and serve with rice, noodles or oriental salad.
