Editor’s Note April - Time to Rise!

If March centres around St. Patrick’s Day, April is when we begin to appreciate that Spring has really arrived - the temperatures rise (as do our spirits!) and the days begin to have a bit of length in them once more. For those who figure Winter is a time to stay indoors, April offers the chance to get out and about again, to enjoy taking a bit of exercise without fearing frostbite and, with a bit of luck, fewer children to hose down after their various mucky escapades :) In a way April is when we come out of hibernation, start planning various events with a fair hope that weather will not stop play, think of various DIY projects - maybe even carry some of them through - and check the finances to see if a Summer holiday will be possibility. While the origins of some of the names of our months are clear ( January, for example, comes from Janus, the Roman god of ‘openings and beginnings’), April is somewhat of a mystery. It may derive from the Latin word ‘aperire’ (‘to open’) in the context of the season when trees and flowers begin to bloom, but it is also possible that April is derived from the Greek or Etruscan goddesses, Aphrodite and Apru. As always thanks to all our readers and of course the businesses for all your support. Let’s work together to make it better!

Lusk National School received the Local Debates Trophy from Ger Ó Sé, principal of St Catherine’s NS, Rush. The children competed against St. Brendan’s NS, Loughshinny, St. Catherine’s NS and Rush NS performing brilliantly throughout. Well done to all!

Work on Lusk Community College on-track to commence this summer

Works on Lusk Community College are on-track to finally start this summer says Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell. “Many parents, teachers, and members of the local community in Lusk have understandably been frustrated over the delays which have hindered the completion of the school building project in the past. “Following the approval for phase 2 of the development of Lusk Community College last October, we were informed that the process would take between three and six months to complete. Now, I have been informed by the Department of Education and Skills that the Design Team for the project are currently finalising the shortlist of contractors who will be invited to tender for the project. “Notwithstanding the delays in the past, I am pleased that we are finally making progress on delivering phase 2 of Lusk Community College. This completion of phase 2 of the school building is vital in terms of ensuring all students and teachers in Lusk Community College have the resources and space they require, and that adequate capacity is provided to cater for the needs of the local community now, and in the coming years. “With the contractors who will be invited to tender now being shortlisted, and should no further issues arise, construction on phase 2 of Lusk Community College is on-track to begin this coming summer. Overall, the development of phase 2 of the school should be completed within 18 months.

There was a meeting held recently with Lusk twinning members to discuss welcoming our Breton friends. Ideas that were put forward included a trip to the beautiful Farmleigh House and a visit to the Guinness Storehouse, as well as a walk around the City of Dublin tour and it’s sites. We will also be welcoming Breton town’s new Mayor and her husband on their ﬁrst visit to Lusk. Locallink Fingal, Louth and Meath Local Link provides safe secure and reliable Public Transport services in local and rural areas of Ireland. The aim is to provide safe, reliable and secure bus transport services in Rural Ireland. The mission statement of the original Rural Transport Programme, is ‘to provide a quality nationwide community based public transport system in rural Ireland which responds to local needs’. Local Link’ is the brand name for the organisations delivering the Rural Transport Programme nationally. At a national level, the Rural Transport Programme is managed by the National Transport Authority. In 2017 the National Transport Authority will continue to identify improvements in existing services and developing appropriate new routes based on the budget of €15.9m (includes €1.5m from Department of Social Protection). Over 40 new additional rural transport services are currently being examined by the Authority to be delivered across the State this year. Key features of the new service developments include greater integration with existing public transport services and better linkage of services between and within towns and villages. At a local level, in Fingal, Louth and Meath, the original Rural Transport Programme companies are now pooling their experience, knowledge, resources and competence across their respective counties to deliver excellence in rural public transport services and passenger experience, care and comfort. ‘ In Fingal specifically, two new Locallink services are due to come on stream in mid-April 2017. These are • Balbriggan, Millfield, Naul, Balyboughal, Oldtown, Garristown and onto Ashbourne. • Knocksedan, Swords Manor, Brackenstown Road, Main Street Swords and Pavilions Other proposed routes for the area are also under consideration/development at the moment such as a package of routes centred around the Fingal train stations, accessing tourism sites and local parks. The theme of the initiative is ‘Trains and Tourisim’.

Rush and Lusk News Updates

In March we held our Green-Schools Day of Action at Rush and Lusk ETNS on our current Green-Schools theme which is Global Citizenship - Litter and Waste. The action that we took as a whole school was for each individual to design and create a piece of clothing or a

piece of artwork using recycled materials. Pupils, along with the help of their parents, got really imaginative and reused materials in creative ways. The green- friendly items that were made varied greatly, from masks, hats, dresses, bags, gloves and jewellery to signs, jetpacks and more

abstract pieces. Our whole school assembled in the yard and classes took it in turns to walk across a runway, modelling or carrying the recycled item that they had made. Afterwards we held a small raffle to recognise and reward all of the effort that our pupils put into this project.

On Thursday 9th March, RaLET’s new music group ‘Ceol le Chéile’ played for the first time to their school as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge. They played a number of tunes they’ve been learning, while the whole school clapped along in the 8

sunshine (you can see their performance on the school website: www.ralet.ie). The group has been together since January and consists of a group of talented children playing a range of instruments including the uilleann pipes, tin whistle, ukulele,

chanter, bagpipes, recorder and percussion

(bodhrán and snare drums). They hope to have

many more opportunities to play for their school in the future.

Linn Dubh Social Housing in Rush

Alan Farrell, Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, has welcomed Stage 1 approval by the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government for the acquisition of 11 housing units at Linn Dubh in Rush. “I am pleased with the Stage 1 approval for the acquisition of 11 housing units at Linn Dubh in Rush by the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government. The approved cost for this project is €3,774,000 and will be funded by the Department’s Local Authority Housing Capital Programme. “Increasing the number of social and affordable housing units available in Dublin Fingal is of the utmost importance in order to tackle homelessness and ensure every person on Fingal County Council’s housing list has the opportunity to live in their own home. “This announcement by the Department builds upon similar approvals over recent weeks and months. However, it is essential that investment in acquiring and building social and affordable housing units in the North County continues. “I will continue to actively engage with the Department for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government in order to ensure the need to provide greater levels of local authority housing in Dublin Fingal remains a key priority in his Department.”

Painting festival in Rush Dublin Plein Air Painting festival is coming to Rush on Saturday, June 24, as one of its ‘paint out’ days. This new summer festival is on the way to Fingal as painters from Ireland and all over the world descend on the region for the first ever ‘Dublin Plein Air Painting Festival’. The week long festival runs from June 19-25. The ‘Plein Air’ movement encourages artists both amateur and professional to leave the studio and paint out doors within the landscape. So look out for artists on the streets around Rush this June. Their work will also be for sale at a reception that evening. Artist John Dinan will also be hosting a plein air workshop in the Rush on that day as part of the festival. Where he will teach the painting out doors tricks of the trade. The festival will visit seven different towns and villages in Fingal. The venues are Balbriggan, Naul, Skerries, Swords, Malahide, Rush and Howth. For more information visit the festival website. Lusk Community College News A world on display February assessment came for the 1st year geography students at Lusk Community college and students surprised with some innovative and creative project. A wide array of projects were on display, with exploding volcanoes, features of river erosion and deposition and the mantle of the earth being some of the highlights.

Martin Tully from Tully Nurseries visited Lusk Community College recently to talk to 5th year LCA students about garden design. The students thoroughly enjoyed it and got to show Martin the daffodils they planted. They plan to visit Tully Nurseries in the future and learn more about Agriculture and Horticulture.

Hard luck to the U16 Boys team who were defeated 1-10 to 1-07 in Abbotstown on Monday March 20th. Both teams put up amazing performances and fought extremely hard. Within the first five minutes Lusk was on a high with their first point and soon after scored a second. Unfortunately the weather conditions werenâ€™t great but the boys didnâ€™t let that get in their way. They fought hard and

stuck together making Lusk Community College very proud. We all hope to see the boys back fighting again in the final next year. They had great supporters this year and they will continue to support for next year. Although the team was strong, there were a few outstanding performances made by Ben Murphy, David Moore and Luke Codd.

Mindfulness

Students of 3South are taking up a four week mindfulness course to help them find a way to relieve stress from the upcoming Junior Certificate and beyond. Mindfulness is good practice but takes patience to master. The purpose of mindfulness is to clear the mind from thoughts and put focus on the task in hand. This course will hopefully make an impact on their Junior Certificate. Some benefits of mindfulness... 1. Negative thoughts are expelled as you take in positivity 2. Lusk Community College News ‘Real Bodies’ on show at the Ambassador Theatre Fifth Year History students from LCC visited the ‘Real Bodies’ exhibition in the Ambassador Theatre this week before watching ‘Hidden Figures’ as part of their ‘ Civil Rights in the USA’ module.

Fairtrade Fortnight Seachtain na Gaeilge

Fairtrade Fortnight was ongoing in Lusk Community College from the 27th of February to the 12th of March. This event celebrates the topic of Fairtrade, equality, and agriculture. In Transition Year, a group of students showed presentations to various classes about Fairtrade, and in Home Economics students baked banana bread using Fairtrade products. and chocolate were handed out to students during the week, and coffee and bananas were also given to staff. The school was decorated with student posters on the topic of Fairtrade and the Fairtrade noticeboard was given an overhaul. Keep an eye out for the Fairtrade logo when buying products! Seachtain na Gaeilge lasted four days in Lusk Community College. There were many activities that were held in the school. Everyday there was a ‘Croichnaigh an Seanfhocail’ this was when an Irish phrase was read out over the intercom and students had to finish it in Gaeilge. On Wednesday the Home Economics department held a ‘Bia na hEireann’ competition won by John and Joshua in 1st year. Throughout the course of the week 1st and 2nd year students were given Gaeilge Dockets. Students had to speak Gaeilge outside the classroom and they were given a signature by teachers. Finally on the last day of Seachtain na Gaeilge there was a ceili, the highlight of the week. Thanks to Ms Burns the ceili was the perfect send off into St. Patrick’s weekend. Dana Aragones, TY LCC

Skerries Trad Festival 2017

This year the 16th Skerries Traditional Music Weekend will take place from 19th – 21st of May in the picturesque seaside town of Skerries situated in the North Fingal region of County Dublin. In 2017 Skerries will play host to a weekend packed with music, song and dance where leading artists will travel to Skerries and join with locals and visitors in a celebration of our unique Irish heritage. A great selection of top class individual players will be participating throughout the weekend on many levels including formal concerts, tutoring and pub sessions. Artists such as Mary Bergin, Con ‘Fada’ Ó Drisceoil, Bríd Harper, John Carty, Laoise Kelly, Mick O’Brien, Danny O’Mahony, Mairéad Casey, Conal Ó Gráda, to mention but a few! Local musician James O’Mahony will lead the way to some of the local schools accompanied by a team of musicians to perform and interact with the primary school students. Skerries Traditional Music Weekend is proud to be involved in this Outreach Programme which over the years has nurtured a keen interest in traditional music among the younger members of the local communities. Music and Dancing workshops will take place on Saturday. This year there is a variety of instruments to choose from including ‘Harp’ as well as the continuation of the ‘special beginner Tin Whistle Class’ for Adults with tutor Andrea Gallagher. This initiative is limited to 10 spaces only and a tin whistle will be provided for each student. Also included is a Master Fiddle class with John Carty. Get your dancing shoes on dancers of all ages and dance the night away with the The Kilfenora Céilí Band. This much anticipated event will be held on Saturday night at 9.00pm in Skerries Community Centre. Listeners very welcome – Bring a friend! Saturday afternoon and evening sessions continue to draw in the crowds and the Singing Session with MC Con Fada Ó Drisceoil and special guests is at 9.30pm in Joe Mays.

The very popular Sunday morning recital in Skerries Mills is hosted by Mary Bergin who leads her fellow tutors in an early morning tune. Special guest will be the young piper, Amy Campbell. Method

Cáca éisc (Makes 12)

1. Cook the sweet potato and mash. Cook the various vegetables. 2. Add the salmon to the sweet potato mash and mix together. 3. Shape into balls or use a cutter to make shapes. 4. Dip the balls into the egg and cover them. 5. Dunk and roll the balls in breadcrumbs. 6. Fry off on a pan until the outside of the balls start to brown and become crispy. 7. People from the north Dublin area would be of great benefit so that they can reminisce about shops and characters and dance halls and things of yesteryear that were local to the general area. The Juvenile section of Round Towers GAA Club also celebrated the success of its players at its Annual All Star Awards night. The awards were preceded with a medal presentation to the winning and runner-up teams in their respective 2016 competitions, with the U13 boys winning their Div 5 League, the U14 boys winning their Div 8 League and Féile competitions, the U15 boys were runners-up in U15 C Championship and the Minor boys were runners-up the Minor B Championship competitions. U21 Dublin footballer, Josh Connell on hand to present the boys with their medals. As

with previous years a Senior Dublin player was on hand, and John Small did the honours in presenting the 2016 All Star Hurling & Football teams. Congratulations go to all the players who were both nominated for, and to those who made the final All Star Teams. Congratulations also go to Cormac Howley and Luke Codd who were announced Footballer & Hurler of the Year. Other awards handed out on the night were to Hall of Fame recipient Joe Carton who was Club Chairman from 1946 to 1954, with the club having one of its most successful runs under his

stewardship. His daughter, Angela Cahill was delighted to accept the award on his behalf. There was also a special presentation to both Josh Connell (U21) and Aaron Duffy (Minor) in recognition of them playing for Dublin for the first time in 2016. There were special thanks on the night for Club sponsors Oliver Marketing and to John Small and Josh Connell for their help on the night as well as players, coaches and parents on another successful year at Round Towers.

Congratulations to Lusk Local, Colin Browne who completed the Haul D’Naul 70K cycle recently through North County Dublin. It was a tough course with plenty of hills and headwind. Well done and great cycling!
