Editor’s Note

Hello and welcome to Lusk Local Magazine.. We really hope you enjoy it! We hope to bring you news each month from your local clubs, schools, committees and societies, to keep you up to date on what’s happening locally. March is traditionally considered as the month to celebrate being Irish across the world. Perhaps surprisingly St. Patrick’s Day only became a national holiday here in 1903 - and to prevent too much enjoyment of the day all pubs were ordered to remain closed! It was not until 1931 that the first ‘official’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in Dublin. While St. Patrick would be surprised and amazed at many of the changes in Ireland since his time, he would recognise something that has never changed - community spirit. Without it our lives would be much poorer, we would be more isolated both from neighbours and from the wider community, and many of the little things we take for granted would be noticeable by their absence - a good example being Tidy Towns. We are here to help you spread the news about your community events big and small, and if we have not heard from you yet please get in touch and tell us your news so we can spread your good stories to all of the community. Thanks to all the businesses who supported us in our first edition, and we ask all our new readers to please support them too. Let’s work together to make it better!

Keeping Lusk Tidy with Tidy Towns

Keeping Lusk tidy is a community effort, and if we make a habit of thinking tidy from now on we can take the ﬁrst steps towards lessening the litter! A little effort can make a lot of difference to the appearance of our homes, school and our work places and their surroundings. It takes only a few seconds to pick up a piece of litter you see lying around and putting it in the bin. If you are out and about and there is no bin at your

disposal, bring the litter home with you - it’s easy to make a difference. The Tidy Towns would like to say thank you to the Lusk Scouts for their involvement in the Lusk Tidy Towns programme, and for the bird boxs they have made to be put up around the village. “Keep Lusk Tidy” sketched by Kelly Hoyne, student, who did a weeks voluntary work for the Lusk Tidy Towns as part of her transition year. Lusk Town Twinning

Lusk Town Twinning Association, an association that pairs up with villages similar to itself across the world, have announced that 26 people will be visiting Lusk from their twin town of Thorigne Fouillard in Brittany from the 13th of May to the 16th of May 2017. Plans are being ﬁnalised at present for this much anticipated visit, where long standing friendships will be renewed. The group are also preparing for the 25th anniversary of their twinning with the French town, which takes place next year. By Pat Kelly

Taking the Scouts to New Heights

Last year 15 of the Lusk Scouts left the comfort of their cosy homes to make their way down to Knockree Youth Hostel. They climbed a total of 490m over 15km to the summit of Maulin in just 5 short hours they completed their ﬁrst major hike. Upon reaching the summit of the mountain there were cheers of delight at achieving such a feat with little to no trouble from everyone involved. Upon reaching level ground, dinner was served and everyone chilled out watching

a movie before heading to bed, suitably exhausted after such a long and exciting day. To keep up to date with what the scouts and other activities the 153rd Lusk Scout Group are up to, check out their Facebook page at 153rd Lusk Scout Group. Or you can drop into their cake sale on the 17th of March, which will be held in the Scout Den after the parade, in order to raise funds for their 2019 camp to America for the world jamboree! Emotional works by Lusk Local Newly launched ‘Mixed Emotions’ by Ray Phoenix is a book of short stories which have been written over a number of years. Proceeds from sales will be going to Remember Us - charity which provides a unique social outlet to people with special needs and their families in the North Fingal region- and the Jack and Jill Foundation - which provides direct funding, to families of children with brain damage up to the age of 4 enabling them to purchase home respite care. Ray says: “This book is not just a fundraiser for them; it’s also a way of making people more aware of them and the work they do. While the aim is to donate to these two main charities it will not be limited to them.” It is available through Amazon.com

Facilities first say Lusk 2020

The Lusk2020 Group, representing local sports and community group, has said it is concerned by increasing development pressure for housing in the area while there is a continuing delay in the delivery of public open spaces and recreational facilities With a recent application for 54 new homes in Lusk (Kilhedge Lane), the 2020 group wants lessons to be learned from previous residential developments which have still not delivered the recreational and social facilities as promised in their applications. “All our local sporting groups are under extreme pressure for playing and training facilities with the growing number of children from the area. It’s hard to fathom

why the Public Open Spaces, which would help alleviate the pressure, still remain in the hands of the developers and have not been transferred to the Councils control for the benefit of the community,”says Lusk 2020. Cllr Ken Farrell, supported by fellow Councillors, raised the issue once again at a recent Council meeting with regard to the proposed Phase 1 of Lusk North housing development (Ref F16A/0596) and the issue of the ‘taking in charge’ of the Class 1 Open Space as part of Lusk North Townpark / Lusk Recreational Hub. LCC Wellbeing Week a Great Success By Sarah Vago, Transition Year student, Lusk C.C. Organized by the Transition Year YSI (Young Social Innovators) group, Time2TLCC, we came up with the idea to set our school up with a mental health wall, to raise awareness about mental health and to run a Well Being Week to educate students on how to look after their physical and mental health. These are some of the activities enjoyed by Lusk Community College on Wellbeing Week this year.

Just dance From Monday to Friday students could come in and dance to various songs and just have a bit of a fun with their friends.

Visit of Sam Maguire and the Round Towers A great day in Lusk CC spent in the company of a certain Mr. Sam Maguire. Our successful U14 Dublin champions were also honored and a visit was had by our local heroes from Round Towers Lusk who brought along their division 4 title and the Joy cup. All part of Wellbeing Week!

Guest Speakers on Mental and Physical Health L.C.C. had special guest speakers including GAA heroes Jonny Cooper and Cora Staunton. Dublinâ€™s Jonny Cooper came in to talk about physical health, along with failure and success. The most important lesson is that failure is a part of success, and therefore one should never be afraid of failure. Cora Staunton spoke about how her love and dedication to Mayo county and club football helped her overcome personal tragedies and encouraged everyone to take care of their mental and physical well being.

Mindful Colouring Throughout the week, students could go and do Mindful Colouring! It was a fun and relaxing activity.

Art Masks in Lusk By Dainielis Lizama, 5th year student A First Year Art Exhibition took place in Lusk Community College recently, showcasing mesmerizing mask designs. Students also designed posters for the event to attract visitors. Lusk Community College Art Instagram, run by Megan Sarah last month, has been growing since November 2016. Danger of Palm Oil Fatbergs on Fingal Coastline Fingal County Council has issued a warning for people to be vigilant for ‘Palm Oil Fatbergs’ which may be washed up along the coast as they can be particularly dangerous to dogs. A number were found recently at Hoare’s Rock, Skerries, and results from laboratory tests have showed that the substance was Palm Oil. It is believed that the Palm Oil was part of a consignment which came off a ship in the English Channel about 18 months ago. The congealed substance has been turning up sporadically on beaches and coasts in England but this is the first time it has been recorded in Fingal. A Fingal County Council spokesperson said: “We believe the discovery of this material in Skerries on Sunday is an isolated incident as we have not had any other sightings along the Fingal coastline. The material is a solid white substance which is known as a ‘Palm Oil Fatberg’ and they can range in size from being as small as a golf ball to as big as a boulder. We are asking the public to be vigilant as this substance can be harmful to dogs.”

Pride of Place Competition Fingal County Council is looking for communities and projects in the county interested in taking part in the 2017 IPB Pride of Place Competition. Pride of Place is an All-Ireland competition which showcases the best in community achievement. It is organised by Co-operation Ireland and is open to every local Authority north and south to nominate groups to represent their county. In 2016 Fingal was represented by the Mulhuddart Motocross Project, Skerries Age Friendly town and the communities of Donabate & Portrane. At the finals, held in Belfast in November, the Mulhuddart Motocross Club was given a special award in recognition of the community endeavour involved. In addition the community of Donabate/ Portrane was runner-up in the Population category for areas with over 5,000 people. The 2017 Competition will again have population categories for communities ranging in size from 300 up to larger areas of over 5,000 persons. In addition, specialist

categories covering, youth-centred projects, cultural projects and urban neighbourhoods and housing estates will feature. Local authorities can enter up to five categories each year. Fingal County Council has been involved in Pride of Place for over ten years and in that time over 30 communities and projects have done Fingal proud by taking part in the Competition. There have been nine outright winners, runners-up and special category prizes over those years. Among the communities to have picked up awards in Pride of Place since 2004 are Skerries, Malahide, Ballyboughal, Donabate, Parslickstown House, Draiocht Arts Centre and Mulhuddart. Communities and projects interested in representing Fingal County Council in the 2017 IPB Pride of Place Competition should email the community office at community@fingal. ie and state in no more than 300 words why you feel you are a good candidate for the 2017 Pride of Place competition. Emails should be sent before close of business on Friday March 24th.

LUSK ICA The ladies in Lusk ICA are currently preparing a float for the local St Patrick’s Day Parade. Recently Lusk ICA was represented by Caroline O’Malley at the National Competition Cherry Bake Competition. Members also attended Swords Craft Day, bringing along a selection of crafts ranging from Italian Quilting to Parchment cards, Jewellery and Encaustic art. It proved to be a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable way to spend the day immersed in learning and perfecting skills. If you are interested in trying out something new why not come along to meetings which are held the first Wednesday of every month in Lusk Scout Den at 8.30pm. New members are always welcome.

A successful opening night for Lusk Facility

The latest community centre for Lusk had a fantastic open evening on 22 February 2017. The Cottage Community Centre located on the Square holds a special place in the hearts of many families in Lusk. The former house of the Devine family has been redeveloped by Fingal County Council as a Community Facility. Lusk Community Council liaised with Fingal County Council on the design, development and management of the facility. A Big thank you to the Parents Committee for organising local fundraising cake sale Power Drama School students were to the fore recently when they entertained guests to a fundraising Cake Sale with lots of singing and dancing by Power Drama Students. Organised by the Parents Committee there was a great variety of baked goods - enough, it turned out, to send trays of snacks to Lusk Community Unit and some to the teachers in Lusk NS for their lunch the following day. Power Drama School is now looking forward to the end of term class Feis on March 25th and a number of students will compete in the Speech and Drama Teachers of Ireland Festival in the Talbot Hotel, Stillorgan, on the 1st & 2nd of April.

Lusk Beavers Animal Party

When the Beavers met Crazy Creatures this January, education and fun became one and the same. The Beavers of the 153rd Lusk Scout group were treated to something special when Feidhlim and Rachelâ€™s Crazy Creatures arrived up at the Scout Den for a big show and tell! Every animal was met with gasps and squeals of delight as one by one they were lifted from their boxs and brought around to each of the kids so that could pet them. With animals ranging from baby bunnies to large pythons, hedgehogs to geckos, little turtles to huge tortoises, there was something that every child found fascinating. Even the leaders found themselves in an excited trance when it was announced at the end that everyone could have a turn holding Rose, the beautifully tame albino burmese python. While the animals were brought around for each beaver to see, they listened to facts on the exotic animals, from their original habitat to what they eat, and even a few tidbits on their personalities. This recipe allows a Starter for 4 people. 20 medium whole Mediterranean prawns peeled and deveined. 80g butter 3 cloves of garlic chopped 1 medium shallot chopped 2 pinches of dried chilli 1 pinch of salt 1 glass of white wine 1 tbs of chopped parsley

Heat a large pan with a tbs of extra virgin olive oil place the prawns in it cook for one minute and turn them add shallots garlic and chilli cook for one minute more add the wine bring it to boiling point and finish with the butter and parsley. For the garnish 1 large roasted red pepper sliced 200g baby rocket 2 tbs of chopped walnuts Mix all the ingredients and dress them with 3 tsp of extra virgin olive oil and 1 tsp of balsamic vinegar a pinch of salt and enjoy.

Lusk AC Races Ahead DONADEA 50K ULTRA MARATHON: Congratulations to the five Lusk AC members - Eamon, John, Nicole, Sean and Will who all completed the Irish 50k Ultra Marathon Championship in Donadea Forest Park on the 11th February.

Lusk Athletic Club had a fantastic race at the Raheny 5 Mile recently, with 42 members taking part in the adult race and a few more in the Childrenâ€™s races. Conditions were slightly damp but it was almost perfect for running. There were lots of Personal Bests and happy faces at the end. Congratulations to Darren Ryan who retained his title as Junior winner for the second year running.

Junsa in Lusk National School

Junsa Taekwondo, which focuses on offering a safe and family-oriented Martial Arts experience for students of all ages, recently visited Lusk National School to meet and teach the children of junior infants, senior infants and first class. The pupils certainly showed enthusiasm and potential for Olympic style Taekwondo. Junsa Taekwondo training takes place in the Round Towers GAA hall every Monday and Thursdays. LUSK Community College U14 CHAMPIONS

Lusk Community college are the new Dublin U14 D champions after a comprehensive final victory over St. Marks of Tallaght. Despite trailing by three points at half time, a superb second half showing from Lusk saw them over the line by 4-16 to 1-8. Best for Lusk were Mark Hanratty, Sean Udehi, Josh Hayes and Player of the Patch and Captain Aaron Naughton. They now go on to represent Dublin in the Leinster championship. The following day the team were joined in the celebrations by the Sam Maguire and received a talk from members of the successful Round Towers Lusk men’s team who had their trophies on display.”

Noticeboard & Parish News LUSK ROAD NOTES In response for a question from councillor Ken Farrell concerning regular cleaning of Ministers Road the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, replied that “Lusk main roads are litter picked over a 5-day working period, and bins are emptied daily. Each Friday the area from the Village to Ministers Park and Kelly Park is swept, and the large sweeper 6-week rota sweeps approach roads and other main roads in the village.” Concerning road markings in Chapel Farm Lusk and when they will be repainted - the Chief Executive noted that they are included in the Area Engineer’s Programme and that it is anticipated that substantial progress on the Programme will be made this year. Following the removal of shrubs along the wall at the verge at Chapel Farm residents are to be consulted with a view to identifying a solution that will be suitable for this a narrow area. Work on replacing a footpath at Dun Emer, beside the football pitches, is expected to be completed shortly. A slow text road marking will be placed on the road and a children at play sign will be placed in the verge along the entrance to Orlynn Park as part of 2017 Signing and Lining Programme.

WHIST CARD GAME LUSK Whist is an old card game played since the 18th century. Whist is the direct forerunner to the game of Bridge. It is a simple trick taking game played by four players who play in two partnerships. A standard 52 card pack is used each player gets 13 cards each. Card rank highest to lowest. In each round there is a special trump suit whose cards are considered higher than all the other suits. Whist has been played in Lusk since the early 1970s. Its a great social evening friendly atmosphere and new friendships can be formed. New members are welcome. Knowledge and experience of playing the game are not necessary as the members will assist you to learn the game It take about 2 hours to play. Whist takes place every Wednesday night @ 8.30pm sharp in the Parish Hall Cost is 6 euro.

Balbriggan Integration Forum are offering free English classes in the Old St george’s School on Hampton Street in the town just a hundred yards away from the Carnegie Library. Head Tutor Peter O’Neill has been Teaching English to Students of Other Languages since 2002, after completing an initial Teacher Training Course at the English Language Centre, in Dublin. He went on to graduate in philosophy 2007, before completing a Masters in Comparative Literature in 2013, both at DCU. He has recently just returned to teaching after taking a career break to pursue his writing, he is the author of six collections of poetry and has edited an anthology of contemporary Irish poetry. The classes are for those looking to learn the English language as beginners or intermediate learners. The classes will run from Monday to Thursday both mornings & afternoons.
