Beauty & the Beast a BIG hit in Lusk

Power Drama School were delighted to present yet another major production recently. December 2016 seen “Beauty & the Beast” hit the stage. Starring a cast of seventy seven local children aged 5-18 in our biggest production to date which included 14 song & dance routines. Our production ran in Lusk National School and we had a wonderful time rehearsing & preparing our students for this show. Our non for profit production was sponsored by Fingal County Council, Caseys Supervalu, Lusk, Centra, Dun Emer, Lusk, Papa Gigios, Carroll Produce Ltd, Corr IT Consultancy & MC Building & Carpentry. We are extremely grateful for their support as it would be impossible to stage such a big production without support. Our thanks also to all the wonderful companies & individuals providing spot prizes for our show & to Centra, Dun Emer & Very Important Party, Rush for selling our tickets. During the course of preparing for our production students learn valuable life skills such as the importance of working as part of a team & that it takes perseverance, dedication & hard work to achieve a goal. Students also have great fun & have developed great friendships through the classes.

Local News Taking part in a production is a wonderful way for students to develop their performing arts skills along with increasing their self esteem & confidence. We’ve had a wonderful year in Power Drama School and look forward to what 2017 holds for us. Highlights from 2016 include; participating in the Lusk St. Patrick’s Day Parade, collaborating with Lusk Heritage Group on the new film “The Inquest into the Death of Thomas Ashe”, our Senior student directed showcases of “Hamlet” & “Pigs in Blankets”. We also were honoured by a recent visit by experienced stage, film & TV actor Vincent (Vinnie) McCabe to our school. Lusk Educate Together Winterfest

By Rachel Reilly Last month the Educate Together school in Lusk hosted a bustling and busy Winterfest, with plenty of fun and games. There was something for everyone at this fest and in keeping with the season there was a hunt for elves and their friends, a nature trail around the school, raffles, gingerbread decorating, face painting and, of course, refreshments. My breath was taken away by a busy Christmas market which took place inside the school, with a wonderful Saint Vincent DePaul giving tree, where people could bring gifts and drop them off as a donation to the charity. Beside this beautiful tree was a stall, set up and hosted by the students themselves. Here they were selling small bags of chocolates and sweets, alongside darling little handmade snowmen for a cheery â‚Ź2 each. These snowmen were made by the Green Craft Club, an after school club in the school, currently consisting of about 20 kids who create small crafts, mostly from recycled goods, 8

and sell them for charities such as the Saint Vincent DePaul. The school is working towards their sixth green flag and this club is determined to help charities out along the way! Silence fell across the crowd as winners of the bake-off were announced. With over fifty entrees, the judges said they found it hard to pick just one winner per category. I was lucky enough to get to talk to Nicholas Flood-Urbano, one of the entrants of the Bake-off, about the hard work heâ€™d put into making a stunningly beautiful gingerbread house, before his name was announced as one of the winners of the cake section. Outside you could watch the Santa shoot off, where the kids could practice their goal scoring against the man himself, or you could see Dermot Higgins, a teacher at the school, who showed a presentation about his planned cycle around the world which he plans to start the day he retires - more information can be found at gogodermo.com A big thank you is in order for Trish, Wendy and the rest of the Parent Teacher Association, without whom, this day would not have taken place.

Queen of the Land - North County Macra na Feirme Recently one of our members Grace Hoey participated in the W.R. Shaw Queen of the Land Competition in Tullamore, Offaly. Grace who is a Lusk Local really did us all proud. The Queen of the Land festival was founded in 1964. This year there were 32 Queens participating in the competition from Macra na Feirme clubs all over Ireland, as well as International Representatives. The judging panel included last years winner Christine Buckley, Billy Shaw of W.R Shaw and Anna-Marie McHugh of the National Ploughing Association. Our Dublin representative Grace from Lusk is a member of North County Macra. Grace is 22 years old and is in her final year of culinary arts in DIT. Grace is the Young Farmers Chairperson of Dublin Macra and PRO of North County Macra. North County Macra are always looking for new members. If your aged between 17 to 35 and would like to get involved in sports, travel, drama, debating, or just want to meet new people and have some fun then it’s the ideal organisation to get involved in. North County have their meetings on the first Friday of every month in Kettles Hotel, Swords. If you would like more information please contact the club secretary Emma on 0861704927.

Lusk Locals Bring You The Beauty Bible The Beauty Bible is a booklet created by two transition year students in Lusk Community College. Mollie Gibbons Powell & Cathal Finnegan wrote the booklet to take part in the Student Enterprise Awards. The compeition involves creating your own business with a product or service. The Beauty Bible idea came about after both Cathal & Mollie realised how much they loved makeup. They decided to write the booklet to give beginners/intermediate makeup lovers some tips and tricks. They were extremley happy with the printing of the booklet by The Irish Media Group. Huge thanks to Sabrina Morris for the help in organising the printing! Lusk Community Sports Plan 2020 Updates

Following on from discussions in Dáil Eireann and Fingal County Council regarding the further planning applications and development of the Class 1 Open Space/Lusk Recreational Hub in recent weeks, the Lusk 2020 group and our elected representatives are still asking why the first phase of this plan has yet to be taken in charge by the Council. These Open Space lands, which are interlinked to houses purchased in Lusk Village Estate, are still unavailable for use even though their family homes have been completed for more than 10-years now. In this regard we note the following historical planning condition: Ref (F01A/1465) - Condition No.19 - ‘.....The areas indicated as open space..... to be available for use

by residents on the completion of their dwellings’. Over ten years waiting for access to the Open Space Areas, over 600 homes approx. built to date in the Lusk Village Estate, which (we estimate) has resulted in excess of €4million for the Council in development levies paid by the home-owners. We find this situation completely unacceptable, one that has to be resolved by our Council now for the benefit of the residents of Lusk Village Estate and the wider recreational needs of our community.The group also highlighted the need for residents to share their concerns with the Council over a new planning application (F16A/0495) for the Class 1 Open Space. Lusk 2020 lodged an objection to this planning

application stating that Lusk had undergone a significant residential expansion under previous Fingal County Council Development Plans and those changes brought many community, social, economic and educational challenges but with none of the promises of Public Open Spaces / Lusk Recreational Hub being delivered on by the developer. This planning application was discussed in detail by Councillors at the Local Area Council meeting (8th Dec), highlighting our serious concerns with the Council that this planning application is contrary to the Fingal Development Plan. My BiaBites recipe below is a great way to use up any extra festive nibbles lying around and put them to good use in the lunchbox as a nice energy blast far from the past!!! When I make these in schools, students are always amazed at how quick and easy they are to make and how delicious but nutritious they are to eat! Dried fruits make these bites sweet and along with a small amount of natural sweetener, there is no need for adding sugar. Dark dried fruits are also quite nutritious as they contain valuable amounts of minerals such as iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium which are quite important for energy and metabolism. The oats are full of soluble fibre and B vitamins helping to fill us up and slowly release energy over time. The nuts and seeds contribute healthy fats and protein to help stabilise our blood sugars and curb our appetite. 100% cocoa powder is antioxidant and nutrient rich with iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and flavonoids. It also has energy and mood boosting effects due to its natural caffeine and theobromine content. -Blitz the nuts/seeds in a blender until they become quite fine/powdery. Updates From Lusk Freewheelers Cycling Club

By Shay Hickey, Committee Member We formed our club with three members in September ‘15 and now we have grown to 35 active members. We have taken part in several charity events over the year raising funds for a variety of charities. We did North Ring of Kerry,Great Dublin Cycle,Cycle Against Suicide just to mention a few. We had a fantastic Club Social/Charity event in August where we had 45 cyclists mainly club members and some friends from other cycling clubs. We raised €700 for St Francis Hospice which we presented to Shelly O Connor on behalf of the Hospice. This was a huge success for our first fundraiser for our club and a big thanks to all

who made generous contributions for a worthy cause. We now have a Main Sponsor, Windsor Motor Group (Airside) which has really put us on the map as we all look professional in our sponsored gear and this is helping us to attract new members and making us proud to part of a great social club. We are always encouraging new members to join our club,male and female of all ages and standards and our mission is to grow and encourage people to get involved, get fit, have fun and become a part of our very successful club. Big thanks also to all Local Businesses who sponsored us when we formed which really helped with Club Registration Fees ans initial set up fees. Latest News from Junsa Taekwondo! Junsaâ€™s Conor Deery represented Ireland along with his team mate Craig Proctor Malone from Sport TKD at the World Junior championships in Burnaby Canada.

A very proud moment for Junsa Taekwondo at the ITU national black belt grading were Robbie Weldon Murphy, Patricia Agibuno and Matthew Agibuno received their 1st Dan black black. We also had three students promotion to 2nd Dan, Ciaran McKeown, Lauren Farrell and Wictoria Zeman. Theresa Gorman to 3rd Dan and finally Stephen Russell to 4th Dan master. A very proud moment for Junsa Taekwondo.

CHURCH CHOIR: The Church Choir sings at the 10am Sunday Mass. It is a vibrant choir seeking new members of all ages. Practice is Mondays at 8.15pm. FAMILY MASS GROUP:

The purpose of the Family Mass

Group is to encourage the active participation of both parents and children in the liturgy. A core group of adults is required to help organise the 11.30am Sunday Mass once a month, they may also assist with the ‘Do this in Memory Me’ Mass.

WALKING & SPORTS CLUB: Fingal Walking & Sports

Club have a limited number of Memberships available for the 2016/17 walking season. Walks take place every Sunday morning between September and June. Walks are generally in the Fingal/ Dublin area, commencing at 10.30am and last for two to 2.5 hours. Annual membership is €10 per person. Homeless Drop Off Box Lusk On Chapel Farm Road Geraldine ‘Lusk Local’ set up a drop-off box called “Homeless Drop”. Great to see the generosity of spirt alive in our town. All donations were greatly appreciated and went to one of the Homeless Shelters in Smithfield.

Multi-Cultural day in Lusk Community College

The first ever Multi-Cultural Day took place in Lusk Community College, in 2016. It was quite a successful event. A huge variety of cultures and countries, from all over the globe, were represented by many students of the school. 19 Countries were represented, such as, Spain, Congo, Botswana, Ecuador, Philippines, Nigeria, France, Japan, Russia, Ireland, Peru, Poland, Italy, Ghana, Portugal, Zimbabwe,

Belgium and Cameroon! Students were given the opportunity to learn new words and phrases in different languages and facts about the countries and to get a taste of delicious foreign foods and dishes. Students were given their very own Lusk C.C. passport and were given stamps from every country they “visited”. A fantastic effort was made by all involved, from the students running their country’s stand, to the

teachers who were involved with organising the event, and helping the students, and of course the other students who were exploring all the different countries. The Trad group and Choir played and sang lovely Irish tunes and songs in different languages. This day was also a golden opportunity for Lusk Community College’s first ever, newly-formed Press team, who were busy filming,

interviewing and taking pictures throughout the day. Ms. Atkins, the former principal found that “It really gave us a taste and was an opportunity for all students to comedown, and visit the stalls and get a taste of what other students in our school do on a very regular basis, or eat on a very regular basis.” Well done to all involved!
