Countdown is on for Tidy Towns results Lusk Locals celebrate the award success for Clay Cottage.

BUOYED by their success in last year’s SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition, all involved with Lusk Tidy Towns will be eagerly awaiting the results of the 2016 competition which will be announced later this month. In 2015, chairperson of Lusk Tidy Towns Pat Kelly and her team were thrilled to win a bronze medal for the first time, their hard work all year round paying rich dividends. In Category E, Lusk was awarded 293 points, six up on its 2014 total. The team is hoping to build on that this time around by garnering enough points to win a silver or even a gold medal in their category. It has been a busy year since for Pat and her team members, particularly during the period prior to the judges visiting the beautiful village of Lusk. Congratulations are due to the hard working team of the Lusk Tidy Town Committee, the business people and the community of Lusk who have presented the village in the best possible light for 2016. This is even despite the poor summer weather! Thanks are also due to Fingal County Council for their support throughout the year. The national SuperValu TidyTowns

competition is an annual competition organised by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government with the support of the main sponsor SuperValu and many other agencies. The competition involves participating areas being rated on all aspects of their local environment and prizes awarded to the best under many different categories. The overall winner is ‘Ireland’s Tidiest Town’, which is announced at a national ceremony in September each year. With progress monitored and detailed feedback provided year on year, most participants initially enter the competition to generate interest about the environment in their community and create a solid platform on which to raise issues with the relevant authorities. Over time, the areas attain a standard where competing for major prizes is within reach. As such it is very much a development programme as much as a competition. Meanwhile, the Overall Winner of the Lusk Tidy Towns Garden & Business Premises Award was recently announced and it went to Clay Cottage, Dublin Road. The award was presented by Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler.

1916 Memorial to be officially unveiled The 1916 Memorial will be officially opened this month.

Lusk Community Council is putting the finishing touches to the 1916 Memorial beside the Carnegie Library, in preparation for a September 2016 official opening. Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler will perform the official opening of the very special memorial in Lusk at 4pm on September 24. Lusk Community Council launched its

New wastewater pumping station to be built THERE was some good news locally when Irish Water announced that it is to build a new wastewater pumping station in Skerries. The station, which will cost €5.1 million, will aim to replace the old water treatment plant in Loughshinny. The project involves the decommissioning and removal of the existing foul and storm water pumping stations and construction of the new Rush Road Pumping Station and gravity sewers. The pumping station will be located at Holmpatrick on the Rush Road in Skerries, and the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) to

to upgrade the wastewater infrastructure in Rush, I’m delighted to see that there is funding amounting to €9.7 million to address the issue. “These works will permanently stop the discharge of all untreated sewage in the Rush area that has been ongoing for decades.” Senator Reilly said the sewage issues in the north county were “neglected for far too long”. “These issues have been around for decades and no one did anything about it,” he claimed. “I understand that many people are very unhappy with Irish Water and the way it was set up. I was also very annoyed about the way the whole situation was handled. “However, Irish Water have been quick to take action on cleaning up the sewage issues in the north county and I must commend them on that.’’

Open invitation to Lusk parishioners St Mac Cullin’s Parish

Volunteering Sunday

This is an opportunity for all of us to be active in our parish, in lots of different roles. St Mac Cullin’s Parish, Lusk, will be hosting an open invitation to all parishioners to participate in the different roles and ministries in the Church. A full list will be on display in the church and will be spoken about over the Sunday Masses in the lead up to Volunteering Sunday. The parish pastoral council is hoping that the talents of the parishioners can be put to good use and allow all parishioners the opportunity to become Ministers of the Word, Ministers of the Eucharist, join the ministry groups that help with the sacramental preparation, help with special occasions and much more. On the weekend of October 8 and 9 at all Masses, there will forms to fill in to help collect contact details and preferred choices. Coordinators for each group will be in contact to arrange meetings, training, practices etc. St Mac Cullin’s is looking forward to everyone taking ownership of their parish. Lights, cameras, action for Remember Us

A Balbriggan-based social group for young people and adults with special needs is set to appear on RTE’s Nationwide. There was great excitement in the area when the cameras rolled into town. Members of the group became film stars for the day, while Nora and Jean and their families were interviewed for the programme. Separately, Remember Us have launched a campaign to get their new space at Balbriggan Retail Park fitted out. Their members’ slogan is: ‘PLEASE HELP US TO MAKE THIS SPACE OUR HOME. WE NEED YOUR CASH TO MAKE THIS DREAM REAL’ As the building is shell and core Remember Us have to start from scratch with work including plumbing, heating and extending the mezzanine. The group have a mammoth task ahead but with the sheer passion, determination and drive of the members and the support of everyone in the community, this dream will happen. Lusk locals make the French connection

Pictured are locals from Lusk and Thorigné-Fouillard in the town of Nantes during their recent visit to France.

For over 20 years, Lusk has been twinned with the French town of Thorigné-Fouillard in Brittany, northwest France. Delegations from each town generally visit each other in alternate years for cultural exchanges and are hosted in the homes of local families. This provides a great opportunity for local people in Lusk to experience the French way of life. Over the years, personal friendships have been built up between the two communities. Earlier this year, 25 people from the Lusk community visited their French friends. They were received by the town mayor, Jean Jacques Bernard, and took part in many cultural and social experiences. The Lusk Twinning Association have invited their French friends to visit Lusk next year. If you would like to get involved in any way, they would be delighted to hear from you. Rush Harbour Festival a major success

Rush was truly in the pink for the August Bank holiday weekend and the Harbour Festival. The balmy weather added to the carnival feeling around the town. Visitors flocked to this amazing village and there were queues at bus stops that have not been seen since the 80s. There was only one place to be and that was at Rush Harbour Festival. Haven Pharmacy had Captain Jack and his band of marauding Buccaneers to entertain people in the park until St Maurs Pipe Band arrived to open festivities on the Friday night.

Dancing started early with music from Stage Two and everyone had that bank holiday feeling in anticipation of a great weekend to follow. On Saturday morning the Eurospar train took to the road ferrying people around the town on a Heritage Trail. The craft market was in full swing in the marquee, with talented craftsmen and women from the north county and beyond displaying their produce. Just as the Rush Athletic penalty shootout on the beach finished, the crowds started to gather for the Dermot McNamara and Co Ravens Air Display which really wowed the crowds, Rush Sailing Club crew had the marks laid off the shore on the North Beach as the planes flew overhead. The excitement and anticipation of the crowd was palpable as this event made history as the first ever Rush Air Display. What a sight, loops and acrobatics in the skies above Rush, a fantastic display by the visiting Ravens. They finished their display with a love heart, and Rush said we love you back as cheers from the crowds in the park and along the beach and harbour walls said ‘come back next year’. On Sunday morning families gathered again for the Armstrong’s Sandcastle competition. Armed with ‘jam sarnies’, over 60 families took to the beach to design and create masterpieces. Valerie and Aisling, the festival judges, had a difficult task as standards are getting higher every year. Picnic blankets were laid and deck chairs

occupied for the afternoon in the park as music from local bands entertained the crowds. Food stalls, bouncy castles and bumper cars meant there was something for everyone to enjoy. Smash Hits proved to be exactly that - a huge hit, all ages came to dance the night away in the park and the scene resembled a mini open air festival, something never seen before in Rush. Visiting boats from Howth and Skerries joined the Rush fleet for the Blessing of the Boats on Monday morning. Cillian Bissett piped Fr John Collins to the Harbour and Skerries Lifeboat was presented with a cheque from the Jean and Jim Doyne. Joe, Andre, Andy and their teams got to work to get the marquee ready for the highlight of the festival - The Mayor’s Tea Dance. Buses started to arrive and the guests of honour were escorted into the marquee to their reserved tables. Residents from Rush, Lusk and Balbriggan nursing homes joined their families and friends at the dance and Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler and Cllr Brian Dennehy started the dancing off with their selected partners. Within minutes the dancefloor was full and Mary and Fran from Stage Two kept the music going for the rest of the afternoon.

The pride and the ownership by the people of Rush of their festival was evident by the amount of willing volunteers who offered to help over the weekend and by the crowds who flocked to each event. Without their help the festival would not be the success it is year after year. From the volunteers who man the front of the park directing traffic, supervising the train, litter picking, ticket selling etc, the list is endless. Special thanks must go to Fingal County Council and its representatives who supported the festival and also the local business

community for their sponsorship and financial support for the various events throughout the weekend. Jamie Bollard and the St Johnâ€™s Ambulance crew as well as Sgt John Cannon and his team made sure everyone was kept safe over the entire weekend and were always on hand throughout the four days. The festival organisers would like to thank the community and its many groups and individuals for their support. Roll on 2017 plans are already in hand and it will be even more spectacular!

Paternity Leave now a Statutory entitlement

Mr & Mrs Cody Lusk from West Virginia (pictured) visited Lusk recently. When they came to Ireland as newly weds, Pat Kelly showed them around the historic Tower of Lusk Heritage Centre. From August 2, 2016 Paternity Leave became law and is now recognised as a new legal right in Ireland. Paternity leave may be taken at any time from September 1 2016 and must be taken within 26 weeks of the birth/placement of the child. An employee considered to be a ‘relevant parent’ of a child will be entitled to two weeks’ consecutive leave from their employment to care for their child. A ‘relevant parent’ includes the child’s father, the spouse/civil partner/cohabitant of the child’s mother or sole male adopter as well as parents of a donor-conceived child. Same sex couples jointly adopting a child must choose one parent to be the ‘relevant parent’. Only one period of leave will apply where there are multiple births or adoptions at the same time. Celtic Games in Wales Lusk AC was extremely proud of club members Sarah Derham and Adam McNally who were selected to represent Ireland at the Celtic Games in Swansea, Wales. They travelled to Swansea for the 40th Celtic Games on August 6 after qualifying to represent Ireland in the pole vault in their respective age groups at the National Championships in Tullamore. They were part of a very strong Irish team who took part in the games. Adam finished second place and Sarah in third, both after putting in excellent performances. The experience of international competition has been priceless to them and they have learned a lot about their own ability. Overall the event was an amazing display of athletics talent. Next year’s Celtic Games will take place at Santry Stadium on Saturday, August 5, 2017. Well done Sarah and Adam!

event and Max Lara took part in the Under 12 Boys’ team cross country relay, just missing out on a place in the final. They all ran well and enjoyed the experience. Next up on Sunday, Thomas Lara ran in the Under 14 Boys’ final of the team relay event with the Dublin team placing fifth overall. In the afternoon he competed in the Under 15 duathlon and was delighted with a fifth place in a challenging event. The following weekend it was Leah Riley and Kirsty Seaton’s turn to wear the Dublin colours when Leah competed in in Under 12 ball throw and Kirsty took part in the Under 14 80m hurdles. Many congratulations are due to Lusk runner, Gary Reinhardt, who ran the Connemara 100-mile race in an amazing 17 hours, 47 mins. Gary also marched home in third place. The Connemara 100-mile race takes place over a gruelling course from Clifden through Letterfrack, Leitirgeish, the Inagh Valley, Maam Cross, then on to Roundstone and back to Clifden to complete 100 miles. Very well done Gary!

Countdown is on for Dublin City Marathon The miles are upping each week now in preparation for this year’s Dublin City Marathon which takes place on Sunday, October 30 If you would like company on your long runs please come along. There was another huge contingent of Lusk AC runners taking part in races this month. The hugely popular Rock ‘n’ Roll races took place in Dublin on August 6. The bus leaving Lusk at 7am on the day was full of nervous anticipation as for some it was their first half marathon. Six of the crew had been given the task of pacing various distances for the races while another six put something back into the sport by taking on the important job of marshalling the course. It was an extremely windy morning and so no doubt times were affected by this. However, there were some great achievements and it’s fantastic to see the progress that is being made by all. No summer respite for Junsa Taekwondo Taekwondo never stops at Junsa, even in the summer. At the beginning of August, Junsa Taekwondo lead the way for themselves and two other clubs, Sport Taekwondo and Baldoyle Taekwondo, to a high level training camp in Belgium. Domestically they were busy too. The Lusk-based clubâ€™s August summer camp was a great success with guest instructors from other clubs in attendance. Meanwhile, Junsa Taekwondo had the great hoonour of recently being accredited with the status

of Taekwondo Academy within Taekwondo Ireland, the national governing body for Olympic Taekwondo in Ireland. And in further good news, you can get involved in this progressive club too. At Junsa they are always open to new members and they train beginners all the way to elite athletes. They train at Round Towers GAA Club. The North County Dublin club have made a connection with current Scottish champions Celtic FC and all was revealed at the fun day on Saturday. A large crowd attended for a great day of face painting, bouncy castles, barbeque etc. to hear the news that the club will be joining ranks with this great club and a bright future looks in store for them. Announcing the link up, club chairman Emmet Burke said: “Firstly, as chairman I would like to welcome everyone here today, our members, our parents, our volunteers, and of course our special guest Barry Rodgers from Celtic Football Club. “Before I introduce to you our guest I would like to briefly outline the enormous strides our club has made over the last few years in developing our soccer club at a community level, and to outline the path that the committee and I will continue on in order to develop Lusk United, its ethos, its academy, its facilities. “Our academy, under the direction of Niall McGuirk, continues to grow and provide a

basis for the development of soccer within the community, and provides huge growth in members within the club. “Coach training policy continues to bear fruit as more of our managers/ coaches continue to develop their skills in this regard through the FAI coaching programme. “This is a real positive step and could be witnessed recently in the skills displayed by our schoolboy teams at our recent street leagues. “Our facilities/development committee continue to work tirelessly in relation to keeping our pitches/ facilities in great order and to further develop what we have, the Astro training area being a great example of what we, as a club can deliver when we work together. “As chairman, I have seen a huge change in the energy provided by parents/volunteers over the last few years, and it rests with the committee and I to harness this and to continue to bring Lusk United forward. “Our special guest from Celtic is here today as we announce the partnership between his club and Lusk United, this being a small step for a club of Celtic’s standing and history, is a giant step for Lusk United and continues with the strides being made as outlined earlier. “It is because of these strides and the energy within the club that Celtic Football Club are here today, and it is this energy that we will continue to promote and harness.” Barry Rodgers said: “Celtic have academies all over the world at the moment, we have them in the USA, Europe and Asia and I am glad to see Lusk United come on board. “I look after the clubs in Ireland and Europe

and we put on coaching camps at Easter, October and summer for the players and also camps to teach the coaches the Celtic philosophy. “We also do team tours and at times select teams to come over and train with our academy and take in a game to give the experience of being involved with the club.” If the club continue the way they are going, facilities are top notch, club membership is growing year on year and now this like with the Scottish giants the future will certainly be bright and lasting.

4 tablespoons Oats 4 tablespoons Milk (Dairy/Coconut/Almond/ Hazelnut Milk etc!) 4 tablespoons Natural Yogurt (Could use Strained/Greek style yogurt for more protein!) -1 tablespoon milled Chia Seeds (For Omega 3, Fibre, Protein!)

1.Layer the Basic Ingredients in a container with Oats and Chia Seeds first, followed by milk, then yogurt. 2.Continue with these layers and mix in your favourite ingredients to make it “OOOAT” SO GOOD!!! (For OATALICIOUS IDEAS see the blog on: www.biabites.net) 3.Leave overnight or for at least 3 hours to allow the oats to soften. If you DO NOT want the Fruit/Other Crunchy Toppings to go soggy, then DON’T soak them overnight and just have them ready to add in right before YOU DIVE IN!! Here is just some nutritional info about a versatile, inexpensive and staple food like oats: Oats are a basic kitchen staple BUT NOWHERE near basic when it comes to their Nutritional Value and the “Oatalicious” things you can make with them! Oats contain OODLES of a special fibre called Beta-Glucan. They also contain low GI wholegrain Carbohydrates for healthy hearts, digestion, weight management and energy levels. Some research suggests that 3g or more of Beta-Glucan per day can lower LDL and total cholesterol and this can be achieved by having 2-4 portions of oat based products e.g. breakfast cereals, breads and crackers every day. In clinical trials a 5% total and LDL cholesterol lowering effect was seen within 4 weeks in those who consumed more oat based foods.
