Editor’s Note July is the month when photos move outdoors and Fingal offers many chances to make memories - beaches, parks, festivals and more. It is also the time when photos are ruined by what brought us out to play in the first place - the sunshine. Here’s a few easy tips to get better results this Summer. It seems counter-intuitive but a bright sunny day is often a terrible time to get photos of family and friends. Not only do the conditions force your loved ones to squint into the lens, but the harsh light also creates dark, distracting shadows on their faces. Set your camera or phone to ‘auto-flash’ and check the results frequently. One advantage of bright sunshine is that it lets you take action shots quickly and, hopefully, will freeze the scene in perfect detail. Get in as close as you can - the more you zoom in the more you will experience camera shake. When you are taking photos of your children get down to their level! It works a dream. Remember, digital photography is free so make full use of your ‘Burst’ photo opton - it’s always great to have a choice. And, just because you are snapping away, don’t forgot to make sure you have some protection from the sunshine - there’s nothing quite like sunburn to ruin your day!

Lusk Community finally sees the ‘Light at the end of the Tunnel’

Lusk2020 Group was formed in 2014 and brought together several local sporting clubs and Lusk Community Council with the aim of ensuring that the sporting needs of the community would be met going into the future. This group pulled together to create a roadmap that would develop and expand the sporting and recreational facilities in Lusk, in line with its rapidly growing population - Lusk Community 2020 Sports Plan. The group has campaigned tirelessly to deliver this ambitious plan by way of a Recreational Hub along Rathmore Road, earmarked between Lusk United and the adjacent schools of Lusk Community College and Rush/Lusk Educate Together. In recent weeks, Lusk2020 has received welcome news that the Class 1 Open Space of ‘Phase 1 of the Recreational Hub’, which will account for approximately 60% of the Green Area of the hub in its final entirety, has been transferred to the Councils control for the full benefit of the community.

This move sees Lusk2020 getting out of the starting blocks, to face into a journey to deliver a recreational hub in liaison with Fingal County Council and other stakeholders for the whole of Lusk. It will give clubs the crucial facilities needed to train and develop their members, provide an opportunity for all in Lusk to participate in sporting activities and helping them remain active

throughout their lives. It can only be a positive outcome for the whole community of Lusk. This has probably been Lusk’s first time that the different sporting groups have collaborated with each other to work towards a common goal for the betterment of their community, and all the hard work that has gone on behind the scenes has started to pay off.

Public Meeting outlines ongoing Community College concerns A Public Meeting organised by Lusk Community College Parents Association was held in mid June to give the local community an opportunity to hear from their political representatives directly and to voice their concerns over ongoing building delays. The meeting, chaired by Caroline O’Malley included presentations by the Building Subcommittee of Lusk CC Parents Association. The meeting was told that the Department of Education has been claiming of late that the Building Project for Phase 2 had first been included in the Building Program of November 2015. In reality, however, the project had originally been scheduled for completion in 2014 but was then beset by a series of deferrals and inexplicable delays and it was disingenuous of the Department not to admit to the fact that there had been such long delays. Michael Lenehan of the Building Subcommittee also argued that it was remiss of the school patron, the Education and Training Board, not to have been keeping a watching brief on the project to inform the school stakeholders of the delays as they arose. Paul McNally remarked that once it was insufficient pupil numbers that was given as the

reason for not providing a school and then it was a lack of money. What, he asked, was the reason for not providing the completed school now? Gabriel Kelly reminded the meeting of the determination of Thomas Ashe in ensuring educational opportunities for the whole community. He said our politicians needed to truly mark the legacy of Thomas Ashe this year - the centenary of his death while on hunger strike - by ensuring Lusk’s children today are not deprived of educational opportunities. He appealed to those politicians present to work collectively and individually to ensure that there are no further delays to the completion of the school. TDs Darragh O’Brien & Brendan Ryan, Senator James Reilly, Cllrs Malachy Quinn, Grainne Maguire, Brian Dennehy, Barry Martin and Ken Farrell all said that they understood the frustrations of the community and would demand that the Minister of Education meet with the Sub-committee. A request in January by the Subcommittee to meet with the Minister was declined. Senator Reilly’s closing remarks were “Keeping the heat under the Minister - that is the commitment that I give to you here tonight”. Brendan Ryan

Ken Farrell, also representing the Board of Management, apologized for shortcomings in the communication process undertook in future to pass on any information received from the Dublin and Dun Laoghaire ETB to the Parents Association. Contributions from the floor included a request to ensure the students get access to adjacent fields for recreational purposes and highlighted concerns over fire-safety, particularly in relation to the pre-fab classrooms. School Principal Orla Forde said that in spite of the challenges with the congestion, the staff and students pull together brilliantly to make Lusk Community College a great school and she referenced the sporting achievements this year as an example of how well the school was doing. Lusk Community Council Chairperson, Brian Arnold recalled that ten years had passed since a local delegation advocating for the building of the second-level school were told that there would be chaos if the school was not built and that it incensed him to see that chaos is what the community is dealing with now.

Rathmore parkland in public ownership

Fingal County Council has confirmed to Cllr. Ken Farrell that the open space on the Relief Road, Lusk, is now in public ownership. Following extensive discussions with local sporting and community groups the Council has prepared a plan for the parkland - including soccer and GAA pitches, a playground, adult exercise circuity and car parking spaces. “This is the most important piece of land in Lusk and the facilities the Council will now deliver on will be appreciated by all in Lusk,” Cllr. Farrell says. “We look forward to seeing these facilities in place in the very near future.

Lusk Community College News Lusk Athletes make their College proud Having qualified after impressive showings at both the Dublin and Leinster heats - both Thomas Lara Leonard and Grace Codd were Leinster champions) three of Lusk Community Collegeâ€™s top athletes travelled to Tullamore to represent Lusk Community College in the Schools All Ireland Athletics Finals. Well done to Eabha McNally who finished 5th in the intermediate girls pole vault, Thomas Lara Leonard who finished 6th in the junior boys pole vault and a huge congratulations to Grace Codd who took home a Bronze medal in the junior girls pole vault.

Graduation Day for Transition Students

Lusk Community College held their first Transition Year graduation recently. Their year head Ms McNerney and principal Ms Forde were on hand to recognise the fantastic work and achievements by this group. Parents and the local community were in attendance for a night full of short sketches, musical performances and awards. Among the recipients of awards were Nathan Oâ€™Brien who won the spirit of TY award and Niamh Rafferty who was student of the year. Well done to all.

Lusk Community College News Lusk College awards their best students Lusk Community College held their annual end of year awards day on the final week of term. Both academic and extracurricular achievements were recognised with the first awarding of the Patricia Atkins award going to Ben Murphy for his outstanding contribution to the school.

Lusk College building confirmed After a nine-month delay tenders for the next stage of building at Lusk Community College are due out this month, according to Department of Education information issued to Darragh Oâ€™Brien TD. Subject to no issues arising it is anticipated that construction will commence in late 2017 and the project is scheduled to take approximately 18 months to complete.

Scheme for School Clothing and Footwear

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance scheme for 2017 is now open for applications. The budget provision for the 2017 scheme is €37.4 million and eligible families will receive a once-off payment to assist them with the extra costs incurred when children start school in September 2017. The rates of payment are €100 for children between the age of 4 and 11 years and €200 for children over 12 years of age. “I encourage all local parents of school children to examine their entitlements”, said Cllr Tony Murphy (Ind). Things to do this Summer Summer school holidays are here and parents are starting to panic! But don’t worry, there is loads of things you can do to keep the little ones occupied! Pack a picnic and head to Ardgillan Castle for the day. Build sandcastles on the beach. Or bring home seashells, paint them, pop them in a glass jar and hey presto, a gift for Nanny! Inevitably there will be days when it’s raining, so stock up on baking cases & equipment (Dealz, from 1.50) and make cakes to entertain them. If you fancy a day out somewhere different, pack a picnic and check out Airfield Estate in Dundrum or Irish National Stud in Kildare - they are fab to spend a day and there is loads of space for the children to run and play. For a rainy day, the National Aquatic Centre is brilliant and is close to the M50, so easy to get to for family day out or for their sports summer camps. Most cinemas have kids movie mornings starting from €3, ideal for the younger children. If your children are a little older, check out Dublinia or Glasnevin Museum, these are both super for older kids & teens. Lauren Farrell go’s from strength to strength in Europe with Team Junsa Junsa taekwondo has recently competed in Europe at the highest level, competing in country’s such as Holland, Belgium, Moldova Greece and Luxembourg. One of their team members , Miss Lauren Farrell has made it to the podium on 3 different occasions winning 2 silver and 1 gold in her first year at European level. Junsa also put forward an incredible , 8 students for the Irish Taekwondo Union national black grading and all passed with fantastic results. While at home at grass roots level the team have been working hard for their grading and upcoming local tournaments. Junsa has also been busy bringing taekwondo to the local schools in Lusk. Lusk national school, Hedgestown national school, and Rush & Lusk educate together.

Mega Mangolicious Ice-cream

Method Ingredients • 2 mangos (frozen chopped without skin) • 2 bananas (frozen chopped without skin) • 4 tablespoons vanilla strained/greek style yogurt (Tip: The strained/greek style yogurt has a thick, creamy consistency and is also high in protein) 16 LUSK LOCAL-JULY

There are many variations for the below recipe but I have kept it nice and simple. It is mega refreshing, smooth, creamy and provides a nice dose of vitamin C, potassium and calcium which in addition to Vitamin D from the sun will help to keep bones and teeth strong and healthy. Tip: Mangos are relatively cheap at the moment. Make sure they are soft as it will make them easier to cut and blitz up! Method to mangoliciousness! 1. Blitz the frozen mango and banana in a powerful blender for a few minutes until it starts to become smooth. 2. Add in the vanilla yogurt spoon by spoon, mixing gently in between and until you achieve a nice soft scoop consistency. 3. Gobble it up or freeze it for later....if you can resist!
