Welcome to June When politics and religion are too incendiary, and gossip can rebound on you, there is always the weather to discuss. And, where weather is concerned, we generally have a pessimistic view! “Yes, it has been a nice couple of days, but it can’t last, there’s a cold/rainy spell on the horizon - I feel it in my bones.” June, in fairness, is a month of change - officially it is Summer but the month is not quite Spring, not quite Summer, long evenings but not as long as they will be in July and August, warm but with a hint of heat to come. It’s the time of year to get off a little early from work, see if the barbeque has survived the Winter, get the kids out of the house (without any electronic playthings), limit TV watching and generally get the garden up to scratch. And, when the weekend comes around, this is the time of year when you will find plenty to do in Fingal. With parks and beaches galore every family can enjoy free fun at their own pace or veg out in the often vain attempt to get a suntan before sunburn :) And, when you are out, bring a camera, we are always looking for local Fingal photos - who knows, we might even print some of them (in December! to remind everyone that we actually did have a Summer).

Rush to the Round Towers Children from Third Class at Rush and Lusk Educate Together recently paid a visit to the Round Towers in Lusk. The children, who have been working on a local history project, were given a guided tour by Pat Kelly. “We had a fantastic day,” says Georgina Rushe.

Lusk Twinning, The Grand Finale The Grand Finale of the Lusk Twinning visit was held in The Airport View Hotel, Lusk on the evening of Monday 13th May with the host families and friends of ThorigneFouillard. The Chairman of Lusk Twinning,

Seamus Tynnan welcomed everyone. The Mayor of Thorigne-Fouillard, Pascale Jubault thanked everyone for a lovely time. They spent their time visiting The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, having lunch in Nancy’s pub, a walk to Croppies Acre; a park dedicated to the 1798 Rising in Ireland which was inspired by the French Revolution. There were also visits to the Eileen Gray Exhibition at Collins Barracks Museum as well as a visit to view The Asqart; a restored boat. They also enjoyed a trip to The Phoenix Park and Blanchardstown Shopping Centre. President of Thorigne-Fouillard, Annick Gaillard also thanked everyone for their warm welcome and hospitality. The Programme of music, dance and song was held at the Airport View Hotel in Lusk and was enjoyed by everyone. Gifts were exchanged from the two towns and we bid them a farewell on Tuesday May 16th. Towns and Villages funding scheme The Department of Arts Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has launched a new round of funding for 2017 under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. The focus of the Scheme is to develop projects to enhance and develop towns and villages socially, economically and culturally. Last year seven communities across Fingal shared €380,000 in grants from the scheme which has seen its funding increase from €10 million to €12m for 2017 with a similar amount anticipated for 2018. The scheme will be administered in two separate phases and over a two year period. Phase 1 will concentrate on projects to enhance and develop towns and villages socially, economically and culturally while Phase 2, which will be launched in the second half of 2017, will be a pilot to encourage residential occupancy. Fingal County Council is now seeking expressions of interest from community and business interests in the towns and villages in Fingal for projects for development as part of the Scheme. The Council’s Director of Economic Enterprise, Ed Hearne, hopes communities in the County will submit expressions of interests by the deadline of May 29, 2017. “This is an excellent opportunity for communities throughout Fingal to obtain funding to deliver projects which make our towns and villages vibrant places to live, work and do business in. Last year seven communities received grants ranging from €29,000 to €100,000 which was further supplemented by funding from Fingal County Council and enabled a wide variety of community projects to be completed,” said Mr Hearne. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, said: “There is great pride throughout Fingal in where we live and the Town and Village Renewal Scheme is an opportunity to further improve our communities.” Expressions of Interest Applications and all the explanatory documents on the Scheme are now available at www.fingal.ie

In line with the previous scheme there are two categories of towns and villages; Category 1 being those towns and villages with a population of less than 5,000 and Category 2 being those towns with a population of greater than 5,001 and less than 10,000. The Census data for either 2011 or 2016 can be used. 60% of funding being made available will be for the category 1 towns. All applications under Phase 1 of the Scheme must be submitted to Fingal County Council by May 29 and the selection process will be a competitive one with the final decision being made by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. Full involvement with community and business interests will be an essential feature of successful projects. The explanatory document includes a detailed list of the types of activities that can be supported but it should be noted that up to 80 per cent of the total project cost will be provided for any individual project with the minimum grant available being €20,000 and the maximum grant of €100,000. A higher maximum of €200,000 will be considered for a limited number of projects where a robust case demonstrating exceptionally strong economic benefit to the town can be made. The scheme also now provides for optional funding for public art works up to €20,000 which enhance public spaces as part of one or more proposals submitted in respect of their area. All projects will be required to commence in 2017 and will be expected to incur a reasonable proportion of expenditure by mid-November and this should be a consideration in the project selection process.

Lusk Scouts spreading flowers By Rachel Reilly With the cold weather leaving us behind for yet another year we here at Lusk Local have began to see some so exiting changes. With the blossoming of spring flowers, the returning of our native song birds and a grand stretch in the evenings, it’s safe to say spring is well under way. With this change into spring the local Scout group have stepped forward and embraced the changing seasons with the hopes of adding some spring colour to the town. With encouragement and guidance from the Lusk Tidy Towns Association the scouts, accompanied by their leader, Daniel Stuart-Kelly, set out to make Lusk a brighter place on a sunny afternoon in March, conducting some Guerilla Gardening. Guerilla Gardening is where they go out and plant flowers in all sorts of unusual places where flora don’t normally grow, with the intention of spreading colour, cheer, and, of course, flowers to the community! Daniel came up with this project as part of his final stage of leader training for Scouts. For his hard work and inventive project, Daniel received his wood beads as a symbol of him completing his leader training. The Lusk Scout troop are incredibly proud of Daniel, and the scouts who helped him out, for his achievement and contribution to the community.

Lusk Community College News Friendship week at Lusk Community College â€œFriendship week took place at Lusk Community College recently. This week was all about recognising the signs of bullying, creating new connections and keeping a helpful eye on each other. Events that took place included lessons on anti bullying, mindful colouring, poster displays and the creation of friendship bracelets. By Barry Tiernan

Updates from Power Drama School Lusk

It’s been a very busy few months at Power Drama School. Over 70 students took part in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Lusk wearing “Beauty and the Beast” costumes. Although the weather wasn’t favourable the students made the best of the day & kept the crowds entertained. Power Drama School were crowned overall Parade winner, which was a fantastic achievement for the school. The school held their first class Feis on the 25th of March with guest judge, Soprano Nichola Costello, adjudicating. It was a great day for students to showcase their talents to family & friends and receive some professional feedback on solo performances. Power Drama School students also entered the “Speech and Drama Teachers of Ireland” Drama Festival on the 31st of March, 1st and 2nd of April where they competed against students from all over Ireland in Shakespeare, Musical

Theatre, Poetry and Storytelling. The standard of performances across the board was excellent so they were delighted with how well all of their students performed. Keeva McLoughlin took home a gold medal for Junior Musical Theatre, Lillyann Shevlin received a silver medal in Poetry, Caoimhe Luccan was awarded a bronze medal in a Junior Musical Theatre, Aisling Sharkey received bronze in Shakespeare and 3 of our Senior Students, Jason Murphy, Aisling Sharkey and Heather Hennessy were highly commended in Intermediate Musical Theatre. During the Easter holidays the school hosted a Masterclass in Mime with eminent Mime Artist Astrid Adler. Thirteen students took part in the Mime masterclass. A great day was had by all and the students mastered some new Mime skills which they can use in future performances. Fundraising has begun for a new original production which will take place in The Draoícht

Theatre in March 2018. Students, teachers, parents & supporters raised €547.46 for Temple Street Children’s Hospital in their recent 50/50 bag packing fundraiser on the 13th & 14th of May in Tesco, Rush. At present a number of our students are rehearsing for a charity concert we are guest performing in on the 9th of June to raise funds for a Pastoral Care centre in Priorswood. Our students will be doing a sponsored walk in June to continue our fundraising drive for our biggest production to date bringing 80 students to perform in The Draoícht Theatre next March.

Darkness Into Light Skerries

Having completed Malahide in previous years, I decided this year to walk the Skerries Darkness into Light for a change. It was a great route with a fantastic finish along the coastline as the sun came up. It really is an incredible event and an incredible experience. Thousands and thousands of people of all ages out at 4am in the morning, an incredible atmosphere and clearly something that means to much to so many people. It was great to have such massive crowds turn up at both Malahide and Skerries and to have the Pieta

LIP SYNC BATTLES 2017: Fingal County Council has launched a new free online database of all its burial records, indexed and fully searchable. The Council has responsibility for 33 burial grounds, and has records of burials dating back to 1905. Apart from the burial records of over 65,000 people interred in Fingal between 1905 and 2005, the database also contains information about the history of each graveyard, maps and drawings, photographs and location information, notes
