It May be a sunny month!

The beginning of May is associated with the Celtic festival of Bealtaine. This marked the start of the season of blossoming flowers and fruit trees. It’s good news for the majority of people but for those with a pollen allergy May sees grass pollen counts rise (all the way through to August!). The first Monday of May became a public holiday following the Public Holiday Regulations 1993 Act. The holiday was first observed in 1994. Introduced by Ruairi Quinn, it is thought by many as a day to celebrate Ireland workers but that is not the case officially. Japanese workers, however, have it made - there are four holidays between April 29 and May 5. They call it ‘The Golden Week.’ May marks the start of Summer and the restart of the weather debate with older people recalling the blistering heat of 1959, 1968, 1975 and 1976! Records show that, since 1880, May is the best month for sunshine. While it is impossible to predict accurately what this May is going to be like, the people at Accuweather.com took a stab at it - they reckon we’ll have just one sunny day, 25 cloudy days and 4 days of rain.

Lusk Locals Remembering the past

Cuimhníonn Fine Gall, Fingal Remembers Our Patriot Dead, held its third 3rd annual Good Friday Easter Rising Commemoration recently. A small committee of local Republicans organise different events and commemorations to mark the anniversaries of some of those from Lusk, buried in local graveyards, who gave their lives in the pursuit of a Republic. The event started at the gates of the old church and marched up Main Street to the new 1916 monument and then onto the grave of Thomas Rafferty. The commemoration was chaired by Rush man Paul Cowzer. Neasa Ní Bhriain read out a poem by Padraig Pearse as Gaeilge, Jen de Faoite read out the Proclamation, Jay Doyle sang ‘The Dying Rebel’ at the grave and Seán de Faoite gave main oration. The committee recently held a very successful fundraising night in Murrays Pub, Lusk. This September they will be marking the 100 yr anniversary of Lusk’s most famous adopted son, Thomas Ashe.

100 years since the death of Thomas Ashe in 1917 his life and times are being recognised and commemorated by many groups across the country over coming months. Lusk Community Council is highlighting the importance of Thomas Ashe in the community of Lusk, in the Fingal region and on the national stage during the fight for Irish Independence. Ashe co-founded the Black Raven Pipe Band in

Lusk in conjunction with John Rooney. Lusk Community Council are developing a series of banners which will be displayed on strategic buildings in Lusk in 2017. Chick it out! Lusk seen plenty of Easter Chicks this year Parishioners in St. Mac Cullins, Lusk, knitted more than 600 Easter chicks in the lead up to Easter. The chicks were displayed with treats which were distributed to children of all ages at the Easter Masses.

Free Services for Self-employed supports, compared with PAYE employees. We all know that successful small businesses are more likely to create jobs, thereby increasing the opportunities for job seekers in our local towns and villages. Supporting the self-employed is good news for the whole community. “I was also pleased to hear Minister Varadkar confirm that more benefits are to come and we will look to further strengthen supports for the self-employed. “This will include the restoration of scale and polish treatment under the dental scheme, and the option of free spectacles or a contribution towards a more expensive pair under the optical scheme. The past division between employees and selfemployed people will be eradicated as from now on, the restoration of benefits such as these will be available to both groups here in the North County. “Minister Varadkar will also make the invalidity pension available to self-employed contributors who cannot work due to long term illness or disability. This will be a really welcome move for self-employed people here in Fingal who, for the first time ever will have that security if they are unable to work.

Self-employed people in the North County can now benefit from free dental and optical exams through the Treatment Benefit Scheme for the first time. That’s according to Fine Gael Dublin Fingal TD, Alan Farrell who has welcomed the move by Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar to extend these PRSI benefits to 450,000 self-employed people and their spouses across the State. “The Treatment Benefit Scheme covering free dental and optical exams has been restored to employees, and crucially is now also being extended to self-employed people for the first time ever. “This means that small business owners farmers, tradesmen, freelancers, contractors and professionals in North County can now benefit from this Scheme for the first time. “People who work for themselves and pay PRSI at class S can now get the same regular dental and optical examinations, free of charge, that until now were only available to employees. They can also get a grant for hearing aids of 50% of the cost, to a maximum of €500 per aid, every four years. “Many small business owners in Fingal have spoken to me in the past about the fact that they were not entitled to State

Ken Farrell on Local Issues Councillor Ken Farrell raised a number of local issues at the April meeting of the Balbriggan Swords Area Committee meeting of Fingal County Council. As a result clearing and maintaining the footpath from the roundabout on Station Road, Lusk, to the railway station has been included in the Area Engineers Maintenance Programme. Also, the Council says that open space on the Relief Road, Lusk, should be taken in hand shortly. When that happens a plan for improvement will be prepared, including exercise, sporting, play and other amenities. Arrangements have been made for the installation of a bollard at the corner of Chapel Farm Avenue and Chapel Farm Row, Lusk. A request to have a hedgerow or shrubbery planted along the side wall adjacent to the playground at Dun Emer Estate, Lusk, has been put on hold until the County Council can reach agreement with landowners through the Residents Association. A Council report noted that “as the climbers would be directly growing on the boundary walls of private property, it is not possible for the local authority to carry out the work without permission from the landowners involved.” An overhanging hedgerow at Minister Road, Lusk, cannot be cut back until later in the year due to restrictions on hedge cutting, whereby hedges are not permitted to be cut between the 1st March and 31st. As the hedge is on private land the Council will contact the owner in late summer. Cllr. Farrell also asked about Chapel Farm in the Council’s programme for weed killing. A Council response noted; “Our weed control schedule only includes areas of grass around public lighting poles and any other obstacles that interfere with grass cutting. Chapel Farm is included in this schedule since 2016. However the local authority does not have the resources to spray along road kerbs and within paved parking areas within residential estates.

Remembering the Fifth Fingal Battalion

Speaking at the Commemoration Ceremony cllr. Darragh Butler, Mayor of Fingal noted: “ This year is a significant one for us here in Fingal as it marks the centenary of the death of Thomas Ashe, a founding member of the Irish Volunteers and commander of the Fingal Battalion and it is extremely appropriate that we are joined here today by the Black Raven Pipe Bank which Thomas Ashe founded when he was principal of Corduff National School in Lusk. “We are here today to remember the men and women who made up the Fifth Fingal Battalion and played a significant part in the event of Easter Week 1916, particularly at the Battle of Ashbourne and at the Mendicity Siege on Ushers Island. Some of them gave their lives for the cause of Irish freedom and thanks to them we are now living in the country they dreamt of, a sovereign Irish State.” 12 LUSK LOCAL-MAY

Old Fingal brought to life!

Members of heritage groups and historical societies from across Fingal gathered in mid-April at County Hall to launch a Local History Exhibition. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Darragh Butler who launched the exhibition said “We are very lucky in Fingal to have so many groups in all parts of the county who work tirelessly to celebrate our rich history and heritage. This work which is often unseen is important and vital work which helps to build and sustain communities across the county”. without reply before Colaiste Mhuire eventually got a point, their sole score of the first half. The second half saw two unanswered points from Colaiste Mhuire but that was to be all as Aaron Naughton continued to control the game as a third midfielder and Mark Hanratty and Ciaran

Fingal County Council’s Primary School Athletics League Final took place on April 5 in Morton Stadium, Santry. This participation focused event saw approximately 1,700 students representing 44 schools from all over Fingal create an unbelievable atmosphere at the National Athletics Arena. The event which was organised by Fingal County Council’s Sports Office is supported by Athletics Ireland, Fingallians AC, Metro St. Brigid’s AC, Lusk AC and Clonliffe Harriers AC. This year Cricket Leinster and the Football Association of Ireland came on board to offer their support at this truly multi-activity day! The final saw boys and girls from third to sixth class compete separately with distances ranging from 300 metres to 650 metres depending on the age group. Everyone got a medal for participating on the day and they all got a chance to try out the javelin, do some sprints, dazzle coaches with their dribbling skills and show their bowling and batting technique on the multi-activity fun field after completing their race. In all 17 awards were handed out with Bayside NS winning the Best Overall School award in the North County Section. Niall Mc Guirk, Senior Sports Development Officer, Fingal County Council, said: “Our athletics league was created to provide a fun environment for children to become physically active and to give children of all abilities an opportunity to take part in athletics, with an emphasis on encouraging the less active kids to get involved. Full steam ahead at Round Towers

Round Towers Lusk GAA Club has had a busy couple of weeks recently. A Leprechaun Hunt saw Megan Seaton rescuing Diarmuid the RTL Leprechaun and winning a family pass to Croke Park. There was a great turnout despite the weather. In addition, Cormac Howley and Aaron Duffy were part of the U21 Dublin team to win the Leinster Championship, this was a fantastic achievement for them and the club. James Costello ran the Easter Camp where the boys and girls had great fun whilst developing new skills. Each received an Easter Egg for their hard work.

‘Bear-illiant’ teddy bear treats

Method Ingredients • • •

40g Rice Krispies cereal 120g Nut butter (eg. peanut, almond, cashew etc) 2 tablespoons linseed (flaxseed) or sesame seeds (or both!) 2 tablespoons natural liquid sweetener eg. Agave/maple/ date syrup or honey

“With the days getting longer and brighter, there are plenty of reasons to get outside and be active while also getting your Vitamin D from the sunshine! A Teddy Bear’s picnic in the back garden, going on a bear hunt or even a treasure trail in a park are all ‘treasure-ific’ ways to get fresh air and be active and healthy!! To decorate:

1.Place rice Krispies and seeds into a bowl. Add the nut butter and natural sweetener and mix well altogether. 2. Divide the mixture into 8, roll with your hands into a ball and squish down a little to make a flat pattie! 3. Cut dark chocolate diagonally at the corners to make triangle shapes for the ears and nose. Cut the prunes in half. Make the mouth shape with one half and cut the other half in half again and roll into small beady eyes!! 4. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes & enjoy as they “Snap, Crackle and Pop” !!!

Round Towers Lusk Gaelic Football and Hurling club are running the Thomas Ashe Park Golf Classic on Friday, July 7, at Beaverstown Golf Club. The aim of the golf classic is to raise funds to continue the development of the club as well as pay for recent damage as a result of storm Doris. A Tee box and a team of four can be sponsored for €300, while Tee boxes can be sponsored for just €150. Included in the price is an 18 Hole Game of Golf, Dinner, and a night back in the clubhouse in which all sponsors will be highlighted.
