A course that could save your child’s life

Youth club is to be set up in Lusk Foróige is Ireland’s largest youth development organisation, working with over 50,000 young people and involving over 5,000 volunteers annually. Foróige, which works with people aged 10-18 in a variety of settings, has over 620 volunteer-led clubs and groups throughout the country. They now want to bring a club to Lusk. Foróige is recruiting volunteers to get involved in establishing a much-needed club for young people in Lusk. Volunteers must be aged 18 years and over and have an interest in working with young people and helping them achieve for themselves. Foróige clubs meet once a week and allow young people to meet their friends, socialise safely and get involved in a variety of games and activities. The clubs give young people the chance to try new things and develop their skills and talents.
The Lusk club will become part of a large network of clubs in the North Dublin region. Once established the club will be able to attend lots of Foróige events with other clubs such as discos, movie nights, talent shows, quiz nights and trips away. Volunteers will be given full training and ongoing support to ensure the club runs as well as possible and everyone gets something positive from their involvement. Volunteering a small amount of your time can have a big impact on others. Volunteering with Foróige is a fun, rewarding and enriching experience. New start as people turning their minds to business I believe people are more confident about the economy and may be turning their mind to business. The Companies Act 2014 introduces two new types of private companies limited by shares. These new companies are (1) a company limited by shares (LTD) or (2) a designated activity company (DAC). It is expected that the majority of the newly incorporated private companies will choose to be LTDs. The methods of incorporation are set out in Part 2 of the act which deals with the incorporation and registration of companies. The new LTD will have a onedocument constitution in place of the current ‘memorandum and articles of association’. In addition to the one-document constitution, one of the fundamental
changes under the new legislation is to reduce the number of directors required by a company to just one. The act preserves the requirement to have a secretary of a company who cannot also act in the role of sole director. This will do away with the need to have a passive nominee director and increase the level of accountability on the one director. An LTD is also no longer required to state an authorised share capital, but may instead state that its share capital will be divided into shares of a fixed amount specified in the constitution. Why have a financial plan? We all work hard for our income, but it can be difficult to keep hold of, and putting some aside for the future isn’t always a priority. At the same time we all have goals, and a good financial plan can help us achieve the things we really want. Short-term dreams like a nice holiday, changing the car or some home improvements, and longer term objectives such as providing for our children’s education, clearing our mortgage early or ensuring we will be comfortable in retirement. You don’t need a lot of money to get started. Putting a little away each month, whatever you can afford, can make a real difference over the longer term. Start by calculating your total income and analysing your spending over at least a three-month period, so that you know exactly where your money is going. Review your outgoings to see if you can eliminate any wastage. •See if you can switch your utilities to a cheaper provider.
•Review regular outgoings like TV, broadband and phone. You can potentially make real savings by bundling them all together. •Cut down on those ‘impulse’ purchases. •Get alternative quotes for life insurance and mortgage protection. You may be able to get cheaper premiums. •Shop around for your car and home insurance
when the renewal notice comes in. •Make sure you claim your tax relief on any qualifying expenses (eg. medical bills). If you find that you can save money after reviewing your finances, think about what to do with it. Consider paying off any high-interest loans and credit cards first. Then start a regular savings plan, somewhere away from your main bank account that’s not too easy to dip into. If you have a pension plan, have it reviewed to ensure it remains suitable and that you are getting the best deal. If you don’t have a pension plan, think about starting one. Write down your short, medium and long-term savings goals. Try to work out how much you will need and how long it will take you to get there. Once you have your plan set up, review it regularly to make sure you stay on track. You may be surprised at the difference it can make. Farrell raises local issues at council level
LUSK-based councillor Ken Farrell (Lab) has raised a number of issues with Fingal County Council on behalf of local residents. At a recent council meeting, Cllr Farrell asked the council for a report on the proposal to have a playground erected between The Forge Estate and
Remount Farm Estate in Lusk. The council told Cllr Farrell that an agreement has been reached with the developer of the Forge Estate for the provision of a junior play-lot within the estate and a mixed age group playground. This will provide for wider usage for residents
in Orlynn Park, Remount Estate and other residential areas adjoining the relief road in Lusk. Cllr Farrell also sought a progress report on the Taking In Charge of Chapel Farm Estate in Lusk. In its report, the council said that the taking in charge of the open spaces at Chapel Farm is at an advanced stage. “Over the summer, land registry mapping was prepared by the Parks & Green Infrastructure Division to facilitate the legal transfer,” the council said. “Extensive contact has been made with the representatives of the liquidator and receiver as well as local residents and all outstanding issues have been satisfactorily agreed. We expect the process to be complete without any further delay.” Separately, Cllr Farrell asked the council what monies are available to commence the planned new layout on Hands Lane, Lusk, which will include a Contra System, and will the plans for this scheme be presented to the committee? Fingal County Council said an application for funding of Hands Lane Improvement Scheme is being submitted to the National Transport Authority (NTA) for consideration in the 2016 allocation. “Plans for this scheme will be prepared and presented to the Area Committee as part of this process,” the council said.

Lusk Tidy Towns invited to National Tidy Towns Awards Unfortunately Lusk Local went to print just prior to the announcement of the winners of the 2015 SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition. Lusk has fared exceptionally in the competition year on year thanks to Pat Kelly and her hardworking team of volunteers. INGREDIENTS For the chicken:
4 chicken breasts, 2 tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tbsp sweetener, 1 garlic clove, crushed, 1 tsp ground cumin
350g sirloin steak, all visible fat removed 1 tbsp soy sauce ½ tsp crushed dried chillies ½ red, yellow and green pepper 1 carrot 300g pack dried wholewheat noodles Low calorie cooking spray

Dice the chicken breast and place in a bowl; mix the marinade ingredients together in a separate bowl and pour over the chicken. Cover and marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours, I prefer to leave overnight.
1½ tbsp reduced fat peanut butter, 60ml water, ½ garlic clove, crushed , 1 tbsp sweetener, 1 tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tbsp fat free fromage frais

Prepare the stir-fry ingredients: cut the steak into strips, place in a bowl with the soy sauce and crushed chillies and marinate in the fridge for at least 10 minutes; slice the peppers and carrot; cook the noodles according to packet instructions, drain and set aside. Heat a wok sprayed with low calorie cooking spray and stir-fry in soy sauce and chillies for 2-3 minutes. Add the peppers and carrot and continue frying until softened. Add the noodles, heat through and serve. Tip: You can replace the steak with the same weight of pork without changing the Syns on any choice. This recipe is not suitable for home freezing.
Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas 4, drain the chicken and then skewer the chicken onto kebab skewers. Place the kebabs on a baking tray, spray with low calorie cooking spray and cook for 15 -20 minutes until the chicken is thoroughly cooked. While the chicken is cooking, make the sauce by mixing the peanut butter, water and garlic together in a pan over a low heat. Continue heating until the sauce thickens slightly, don’’t worry if it seems a little runny, it’ll thicken as it cools. Remove from the heat, allow to cool slightly then add the sweetener, soy sauce and fromage frais. Mix well, beat until smooth and serve with the chicken.

INGREDIENTS 4 x 150g chicken breasts, skinless and boneless 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander 1 tbsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp chilli powder 3 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp fat-free natural yogurt Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 red peppers and 2 green peppers, deseeded and roughly chopped
Method For the marinade: Roughly chop the chicken and place in a bowl. Mix the garlic with the herbs, spices, lemon juice, yogurt and seasoning, stir in the chicken and leave to marinate for at least 30 minutes, preferably overnight. Mix the pepper pieces into the chicken and then thread the chicken and peppers alternately onto eight skewers. Place the skewers under a hot grill and cook for 7-8 minutes on each side or until the chicken is cooked through. Serve hot with a huge crispy salad

This is barbecued pork Chinese-style - delicious for the long weekend! Pork fillet or tenderloin is ideal for this dish because it is such a lean cut and very tender. Serves: 6 Ready in: Over 60 Minutes Syns per serving: : 2 on Extra Easy

INGREDIENTS
700g lean pork fillet, fat removed, 225g mixed salad leaves, e.g. lamb’s lettuce, rocket , Juice of 1 lemon, Salt and freshly ground black pepper, 2 tbsp dark soy sauce, 3 level tbsp yellow bean paste, 2 level tsp peanut oil, 2 level tsp sugar, 2 tbsp Chinese wine (optional) or sherry
Method
To make the marinade, in a bowl mix together the soy sauce, yellow bean paste, peanut oil, sugar and Chinese wine (if using) or sherry. Rub the marinade mixture all over the pork. Place in a container, cover and leave in the refrigerator or a cool place to marinate for at least 1 hour. Remove the pork from the marinade and place over hot coals on a preheated barbecue. Cook over medium heat for about 1½ hours, turning it occasionally and basting frequently with any leftover marinade. Cover the barbecue while the pork is cooking. Remove the pork from the barbecue, set aside a few minutes to cool a little and then cut into large cubes or slices. Serve on a bed of salad leaves sprinkled with lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper and serve hot with barbecued red onions. Tip: Barbecued red onions go brilliantly with this - and many other barbecue dishes... Cut a deep cross in the top of 6 onions (leave the peel on). Add a tiny amount of butter (15g butter in total) and place the onions on a preheated barbecue. Grill for at least 1 hour until the onions are cooked and tender. Allow 1 Syn per serving. For an Extra Easy SP day fill at least half of your plate with delicious Speed salad, of your choice. Plenty of treats in store for Halloween By Patrick Martin
T
he evenings are getting shorter, the mornings are getting cooler and those long bright evenings are but a distance memory as another inconsistent summer has slipped through our grasp. However, while the changing of the seasons can bring with it an air of gloom, despair not. Halloween, and all the excitement it entails, is almost upon us once more, and is the last fun festival we have to enjoy before the countdown to Christmas begins. The children in Lusk (as well as the adults) will already be entertaining thoughts of what they’ll be dressing up as with October 31 fast approaching. Every year the costumes get more and more adventurous with plenty of creativity on show for us to admire. Children are becoming more imaginative with their choice of outfit and there is always the added incentive of competitions for the Best Costume to send them into creative mode. Of course, Trick or Treat will never go out of fashion, and especially for the younger ones, it’s probably the most magical part of the whole Halloween experience. However, there are usually lots of other things to do locally so keep an eye out for events, including Halloween camps that may be taking place in the community. There will also be a mid-term break for the children to enjoy (and their teachers!), and the last bank holiday of the year to look forward to. This year it falls on Monday, October 26. Although Halloween is always a magical time for the youngsters, there are safety issues that can’t be ignored, especially if the children are attending bonfires. Because, the clock will have gone back an hour the previous weekend, it will be darker earlier, and it’s probably a good idea to have your children dressed in bright colours if they are going around the doors Trick or Treating. Also, it’s vital that adults supervise the children at all times. For many years, bonfires on green spaces in residential areas were a main feature of

However, while the sight of a blazing fire illuminating the night sky can add more than a frisson of excitement to the Halloween experience, bonfires come with a major health warning. Horror stories emerging from the Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments in our hospitals over the Halloween period are becoming all too common with some unfortunate people sadly ending up with life-altering injuries that could so easily have been prevented with safety precautions. The fact of the matter is: illegal bonfires can be highly dangerous and can cause a serious amount of damage to people and the environment. Indeed, local authorities, including Fingal County Council, are left counting the cost

financially long after the last bonfire has fizzled out. Of course, this is money that if it were redirected towards providing local amenities, would benefit the entire community all year round. At this time of year, spare a thought too for the excellent work carried out by our emergency services that are on standby to deal with every eventuality on their busiest night of the year. Despite these warnings, don’t lose sight of the fact that Halloween is meant to be a special time in which to have fun. Stay safe and enjoy all the events that are happening in the community. Let’s hope the locals in Lusk have a great time and provide the wow factor with their range of costumes!

Halloween is a magical time for children, and in Lusk, a local couple have been playing their part with a special treat for the kids for almost 20 years. Sam and Ann Skelly place a witch on a lamppost in the area every year and it has become part of the furniture around the village for the month of October. The witch has been photographed many times and Halloween in Lusk just wouldn’t be the same without her presence!
Surviving Ardgillan Castle at Halloween – you haven’t a
ghost of a chance! Ardgillan Castle is undoubtedly one of the gems in Fingal’s crown. It’s a very popular venue for a day out at any time of the year, but at Halloween, it’s even more special. The famous (or we should say infamous!) Ardgillan Castle Spooky Tours are taking place again this year much to the delight of locals. Hundreds of people from the area have already experienced the spine-chilling tour in the 18th century manor house that is chock full of ghosts and creepy goings-on. The promotional material surrounding the event has always indicated that this tour is not for the faint-hearted. Rumour has it that this year will be a Vampire theme. Rumour also has it that several Vampires have been seen in or around the castle over the years. The Lady’s Stairs is a landmark that has long been associated with Ardgillan. Some people say that a lady, who drowned in the sea close to the castle many years ago, haunts it. A spokesperson for the castle said that they are unsure if the lady will appear this year – but you never know, you need to be careful turning every corner. Visitors to the castle during Halloween week have often been seen running and screaming up the avenue, as it is often too much for people to take. Even if you go on a bright sunny day the atmosphere in the castle at Halloween is absolutely terrifying. It’s anticipated that this year it will be even bigger and better than in previous years. So the warning is: go at your peril. And don’t say you weren’t warned!

Lusk 2020 Community Sports Plan
T
he Lusk 2020 Community Sports Plan brings together a number of organisations to strive to meet the future needs of sporting facilities in the community of Lusk. Lusk is a growing area with a strong background in sports and the aim of this plan is to create a development road map that will help guide ongoing investment towards sporting facilities in Lusk. The success of this strategy also relies on the partnership and unity of several organisations. Lusk’s position within Fingal means that it can be used as a sort of sports hub by a number of clubs in the district eg, Fingal Triathlon, Fingal All Stars, and The Hills Cricket Club. The Lusk 2020 Community Sports Plan has been developed with representatives from the Community Council and local schools. The voluntary organisations in Lusk that provide a broad range of services to the community
are viewed as the strategic stakeholders for the plan. Some of the local investors include Lusk United A.F.C, who are actively involved in the training and education of coaches and constantly aimed towards to improving soccer facilities for the Lusk community. Round Towers GAA plays an essential role in the parish of Lusk and with over 500 members across all age groups is a substantial stakeholder in this project. Lusk Athletic Club is also involved in this plan and is well positioned to accommodate the growing population of Lusk and other surrounding areas. Lusk AC is also the holder of the Club Quality Mark awarded by Athletics Ireland. The Lusk 2020 Community Sports Plan also aims to improve many aspects of sporting life within the village. One of these objectives is to ensure that there is a healthy relationship between sporting and educational facilities and resources,
with the hope of enlarging community benefits of investment in the sports and education sector in Lusk. There is a focus on making Lusk the healthiest and most active community in Ireland by providing its residents with whatever needs are necessary for them to stay active. The plan aims to ensure there is an adequate number of sporting facilities to support the growing community, and in turn have the ability to host different sporting events. This plan is set to take place over the next three years, and some of the outcomes include a new all-weather floodlit playing pitch, one additional GAA pitch, two juvenile grass pitches, a 400 metre and eight lane running track around an all weather pitch, a cage for shot putt and hammer throwing and a new indoor sports hall.

SCOUTS Lusk Scout Group is an integral part of the community

By Rebecca Rowan The 153rd Dublin, Lusk Scout Group has been an important and integral part of the Lusk community for over 30 years. The group caters for children from age 6 all the way up to young adults of 20. They currently run two nights for their Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts and their Ventures’ section, which looks after 15 to 17-year-olds, has re-opened since 2007 and boasts six ventures and two leaders. Scouts help children and young adults to develop skills such as teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication,
cultural awareness and commitment, all whilst having fun! They part take in many activities including camping, hiking and other expeditions, and are given the chance to earn badges in areas such as Skills, Environment and Community Involvement. Two members of the Lusk Patrols achieved Silver in The Phoenix Challenge this year which is a major achievement. The Phoenix Challenge is a national scout craft competition that takes place at the end of August each year. It is the largest annual gathering of scouts in Ireland, attracting up to 60 patrols of eight scouts from all around the country. Patrols represent both their scout troop and county and will have qualified for the event by finishing 1st or 2nd in their Scout County Challenge. It is a four-day event and encompasses the major aspects of the scout programme which include a campcraft competition, team and skill challenges, special projects and a cooking competition. On the final day, each Patrol receives a Gold, Silver or Bronze standard certificate and prizes are awarded for the individual section winners as well as the overall competition winners. Some of the groups also visited W5 in Belfast this summer, which is a discovery centre, with over 250 interactive exhibitions in four exhibition areas. There is also a daily programme of live science demonstrations and shows which take place throughout the day. Meanwhile, the Lusk Scouts, Ventures and Rovers are also planning on heading to a County Camp in
Larch Hill from October 2-4. The programme for the Camp is being organised by a team of scouts and leaders from Fingal Scout County and the decided theme is Camelot. There will also be a Camelot trade fair taking place over the weekend with stands from different scouting groups and a campfire with the chance for a singalong or a story or two!

Busy spell for Lusk Athletic Club

eptember proved to be another active month for Lusk Athletic Club with weekly training routines and multiple races keeping members fit. The club took part in the 90th celebrations of St MacCullin’s Church by hosting the Lusk Road Races which were a roaring success. The event saw people turn out in force for the races and everyone got into the spirit of things and had a great time. Meanwhile, the Juvenile Cross Country season has officially kicked off with Cross Country League 1 taking place on September 20 at Ardgillan. The competition saw athletes from numerous clubs compete throughout the day and it was a great start to the new season. The East of Ireland Marathons also held a full and half marathon, as well as a 20mile race in Longwood, County Meath, in which members of Lusk Athletics Club took part. This event took place on September 26 and was enjoyed by all. September was certainly a super active month as the Dublin Half Marathon also took place in the 20LUSK LOCAL-OCTOBER 2015
Phoenix Park on September 19, and it proved to be another busy day for Lusk runners. Separately, a new Parkrun is being established in nearby Donabate, with Saturday, October 10 scheduled as the official start date. A trial run was held on September 12 which saw Lusk AC members running the course and lending a helping hand.
On the fundraising front, Lusk AC will be bagpacking in Supervalu on the October Bank Holiday weekend, Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24, to raise much-needed funds for the club. The Archdiocese of Dublin is offering young people, aged 16-30, the opportunity to attend World Youth Day (WYD) in Krakow, Poland, in July 2016. The diocese is bringing two groups (16-18 year olds, and over 18s) to the event. Places are limited. Young adults (18+) are invited to sign up for a leadership course called ‘Anchor’.
