Lets pull together and ensure a happy Christmas Oh dear, once again we have gone into severe lockdown in a bid to surpress this pandemic which has been plaguing our country and the world for the last10 months. Once again our movement is restricted. We have to stay at home instead of going to work except for certain exceptions and we are subject to nearly all the restrictions we had earlier this year. So,what can we do to make sure a new day dawns for us all soon. Well two simple things spring to mind. Firstly lets all pull together like we did at the start of the year and secondly lets all obey the Government rules and flatten the curve again. We should also all shop locally and ensure local jobs. Maybe this is the sharp shock we all needed to remind us about the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others.Community transfer of the virusseems to be the problem so lets not go back to meeting numbers of people. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible. We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together now as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as possible and stay safe and enjoy the Christmas season. We all have mothers, fathers, children, spouses, partners and family we love and do not want to see ill or die, so please, please lets all pull together, protect ourselves, protect our loved ones and our neighbours and give each other the best Christmas present ever by flattening the curve again. That way we can have as near a normal Christmas once again. So please, obey the rules, stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all each other. The Locals team.

LAG Library campaign begins in earnest! We are pleased to report that we submitted our proposal to Fingal County

Council for Lusk Library last month and met with them following this.

We have the endorsement of Minister for Community Development, Joe

O’Brien, and Senator Regina Doherty. We are very lucky to have Cllr Robert O’Donoghue on our committee, and he has been of utmost importance in bringing our agenda to Fingal County Council and ensuring good communication links.

A library in our community will have far reaching benefits. It is no longer

simply a place to borrow books, but a holistic focal point in which to support and empower us, benefitting the whole community, schools, businesses,

the older population and the youth. The library offers courses in literacy, numeracy and communication; support for those seeking employment,

programmes on health education, support and collaboration with schools, business development education for self-employed and entrepreneurs and

work and study spaces. The list goes on.As a community with a rich history and with such a unique national monument, the library would play a part

in keeping this heritage and our cultural identity alive. Our Lusk Heritage Group have, throughout the years, and with very little funding, passed

along the history of Lusk. The library would support them, promoting the celebration of our history.

Our schools have all contributed to our proposal with their endorsements.

The benefits to them would be many, making a wonderful amenity finally accessible to our children, and enriching their education and experience.

Lusk has seen incredible population growth in the last number of years, with supporting infrastructure and amenity struggling to keep pace. How can you get 66% instant growth on your money? By Dave Kavanagh A hugely important topic is planning for retirement. Unless you want to try and live on a mediocre state pension for what is likely to be over a third of your adult life, it would be wise to make your own plans and plan early. Obviously, the longer you contribute to a pension, the more you will have when you retire. One of the most attractive aspects is the tax relief on contributions at your marginal rate. This means that for anyone on the 40% tax rate, every €100 you contribute is only costing you €60. Another way of looking at that is that your €60 has grown by just over 66% to €100 the moment you have put it in! The other tax incentives, are that pension funds are invested in a tax-free environment and you can also take a tax-free lump sum at retirement stage. If you’re fortunate enough to already be in a company pension scheme or a superannuation, that is great (although depending on your length of service, you may want to supplement your fund by paying AVCs (additional voluntary contributions)). The people that administer your pension scheme should be able to provide you with information about that. If you have your own limited company, you can set up your own scheme and allow the company to pay for all or some of

the contributions. For everybody else, You can set up a personal pension or a PRSA (personal retirement savings account) and still get the tax relief. Self employed - One option that many self-employed people avail of, is to pay an annual amount into a pension in order to reduce their tax bill. Usually, they would have up to 31st October in the current year in order reduce their 2019 tax bill, but due to Covid-19, for those filing and paying online to Revenue, they will have more time to do this. Lusk Tidy Towns Christmas Card and Calendar launch By Pat Kelly During these dreary days of winter, the joy of receiving a Christmas Card is needed and looked forward to. The Lusk Tidy Towns Committee has been producing Christmas Cards and Calendars for over 28 years.We began by producing 6 postcards and these proved to be most successful. Then we produced our Christmas Cards and Calendar, all depicting scenes of Lusk. Lusk the little town that we love so well,We’re so lucky to reside herehappily we dwell. Lusk is the anglicized version of LUSCA meaning ‘cave’, St.Maccullin is our saint, his incorruptible body rests eternally in our Round Tower grave. There’s sunshine galore it rarely rains, We’re the gourmet hub of market gardening set amidst luscious green country plains. We’ve our very own vineyard brewing the sweetest tasting Lusk wine, We’ve the historic church of St.Maccullin where we gather to worship God divine. We’re of Viking descent-our veins pulsate of courageous Norse blood, Genetically amalgamated with early Christians who fought at our Round Tower & bravely stood. We’re fused together down the years by strong ‘Luskian’ family ties, The matching surnames remain today-they shall never die. We’re a close knit village all united for the same goal, Deep delight in our little village seeps through each heart & soul. We support neighbours & deliver COVID shopping to their door, Kindness & generosity is engrained within EACH Lusk person’s core. New settlers have flocked in droves and today alongside us abide, We embrace them with open arms to Lusk-Welcome to North Dublin’s BRIGHTEST side! There’s the kickboxing, Tidy Towns & Drama School, Growing up in Lusk there’s a host of opportunity-you won’t turn out a fool! There’s horses & carts- a Santa at Christmas who rides the ring road, There’s Bernard who pridefully cycles a painted Dublin barrel with a navy & blue flagged load! We’re a bunch of colourful characters who stand out a mile, Yet, we’ve hearts of gold- nobody beats our unique FINGALLIAN smile! We’re an eclectic mix of young & old, Vibrancy & good spirit here in Lusk flows like gold. We’re the best little town in Dublin by far,and you’ll reach us in 20 mins from the city centre by car! We’re a genetically modified bunch of assorted faces, We’re a thriving modern suburb with a blessed addition of so many diverse cultures & races! There’s the rural residencies & mansions out the commons road, It’s like Connemara up there with a Dublin post code! We’ve the Black Raven pipers who puff out Amazing Grace from the bandstand, There’s the Skinny Batch Cafe-opportunistically into any local there you could land! orienteering! We’ve The Square, Community Centre & St. Patricks Day parade, There’s the Bandstand barbers who give a great number 1 with a slick balding blade! We’ve the dreaded ‘dog snatchers’ who put on cable ties to mark our bins, We’ve also got Fr.George who acts as Jesus & wipes away all sins! We’ve the St. Vincent De Paul who advocate alongside our poor, Here in Lusk we all look out for each other nobody is ‘très grandeur’. Lusk the town that I love so well, I wrote this little poem so that the whole world I can tell!

Lusk United A.F.C. successful applications to community grant funding

The Executive Committee of Lusk United A.F.C. are delighted to inform you all of the great news of our successful application to the 2020 Fingal County Council Covid-19 Emergency Fund.Fingal 2020 Covid-19 Emergency Fund is a grant programme which is aimed at providing funding to community groups that are responding locally to the Covid-19 pandemic. Lusk United A.F.C. wish to thank those involved for making this happen, particularly Fingal

County Council, and the Department of Rural and Community Development in awarding our community football club the funding for this project. Additionally, we wish to thank our partners on this project - Rethink Graphics, with the deliverables of the project now in use across our club.Secondly and for the second year in a row, Lusk United A.F.C. have been successful with their application to the 2020 Fingal County Council (FCC) Youth Sports (Small Grant)

Scheme. Lusk United A.F.C. are one of 96 sports clubs, across Fingal, that will receive €1,200 under the scheme from Fingal County Council Sports Office which is partially funded by Sport Ireland. The Executive Committee of Lusk United wish to thank all those involved for making this happen, particularly Fingal County Council (FCC).

O’Donoghue Demands End to Power Cuts Cllr Rob O’Donoghue spoke with representatives of the ESB at this months Area Committee Meeting where the issue of the ongoing power outages in Lusk were discussed. O’Donoghue stated ‘I have been informed that the issue of ongoing power outages in Lusk is not to do with load capacity from the Glasmore Plant but with items such as timber/trees shorting the output line that feeds Lusk.ESB workers have physically inspected the line and sent drones down it to identify areas where, in particular, timber is interfering with the supply, with the intention on having the trees removed. Home Cook Recipes

Niamh’s basic bread – a truly lovely loaf! With lockdown and Covid restrictions, baking has been on the rise and became a more regular occurrence,even in households who never baked before!! This recipe here is quite a basic bread but the resulting loaf is really lovely and the beautiful baking smells are so comforting especially on darker Winter days. For more fibre, use a strong wholemeal flour.

Ingredients: • • • • • •

500g strong flour (And a bit more for kneading) 1.5 teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons olive oil (Helps give the bread a nice colour!) 1x7g sachet active dry yeast 3 teaspoons sugar 300ml warm water (Not too hot or it will kill the yeast) Preheat a casserole or pyrex dish with a lid for 30minutes at 250’c (has to have a lid in order for the bread to rise in the oven)

Method: 1. Mix dry yeast well into the flour in a large mixing bowl. 2. Add sugar, salt and olive oil. Then add the warm water. 3. Mix well until it combines together to form a dough. 4. Sprinkle some flour on a flat surface. Knead the dough for 10-15mins until the dough is less sticky, has a smoother surface and can stretch without tearing. If the dough is sticking to your hands, you could coat rub a small amount of olive oil all over your hands. 5. Roll the dough around to form into a ball. 6. Put a small amount of olive oil in a bowl and place the dough ball inside. Completely seal the top of this bowl with cling film. Leave to prove (set aside in a warm place) for 2-3hours until the dough has doubled in size. 7. Sprinkle some flour on a flat surface. Knock the air out of the dough by pressing it. Shape

again into a ball and leave for 1hour to do a final proof. 8. Score the top of the dough using a sharp knife. This helps the gases release 9. Place the dough in the preheated dish with the lid on for 20minutes at 250’c. 10. Remove the lid and allow bread to cook for a few more minutes in the oven until golden brown. 11. Place on a cooling rack/tray. Allow to completely cool before cutting. This can take up to 2hours.

GoRedForDyslexia in November by Siobhan O’Neill White Did you know that 1 in 10 children in Ireland are Dyslexic? In the past, Dyslexic children were often shunned and ignored in school, as they were not considered to be clever. But the reality is, Dyslexic children are clever, creative and smart. Our daughter is Dyslexic and struggles with reading and spelling but also happens to be intelligent and observant with a vivid imagination. Thankfully schools are much better at supporting Dyslexic children nowadays. Our daughter gets additional learning support and can use technology, such as her scanning pen, in school too. The scanning pen (reader pen) is a tech pen which help her understand words and their meanings. When she comes across a word she does not understand, she scrolls the scanning pen across the word and the pen reads the word aloud to her. The pen also has a dictionary function, to give her a definition of the word if she needs that. awareness month (#GoRedForDyslexia) and is a good opportunity to start conversations about Dyslexia. If you have worries about your child possibly being Dyslexic, contact The Dyslexia Association Of Ireland at Dyslexia. ie for advice and support. Also, speak with your child’s teacher and school principal about it. They can help arrange testing.We first started to worry about our daughter possibly being Dyslexic when she was around 6 years old and was struggling with homework. She had difficulty reading small, simple words and would often jumble them up. She really struggled with the word ‘was’, always reading it as ‘saw’. The school offered reading support and then, when this was not enough, they agreed to have her tested for Dyslexia. It was helpful to get the confirmation of Dyslexia because we knew what to do to help her and the school was fully supportive too. Please speak out and ask for the help and support you need because it will really help your child and that will make school a better experience for them. News & Events Lusk AC raised thousands for St Vincent De Paul

Congratulations to club member Dwain Moore on completing his first sub 3 hour marathon. Dwain ran the 26.2 miles around Lusk and surrounding areas in a brilliant time of 2:56:55. We received confirmation that a total of â‚Ź4,457 was raised for St Vincent de Paul from our 12 hour relay earlier this year. Well done to all in the community who ran, helped and donated. Club members have taken advantage of the wide open spaces of two local parks for some extra Sunday training recently. As well as the regular Sunday morning hill training at Ardgillan there were also speed sessions held at the slightly flatter Newbridge House. Our Fit4Life group are a great bunch and have worked really hard. They are highly motivated and our coaches have been delighted with their progress.

Junsa Taekwondo Club News Junsa training outdoors at Round Towers GAA club. With even stricter restrictions in place and not able to have classes indoors we at Junsa have adapted our training and taken to the outdoors. The Round Towers GAA club have very kindly aloud us to use their Astro pitch to continue our Taekwondo training.While we are still limited to class numbers we are still aloud to keep on training in our Olympic sport.Taekwondo Training outdoors is very unusual and can sometimes feel alien to us, but the students have settled in to their new environment well. Junsa Taekwondo would like to extend their gratitude to the Round Towers GAA Management, committee and coaching staff for facilitating us in these very difficult times.
