Summer heat and smiling faces at last Having been through the most frightening, boring, and completely frustrating couple of years in our lives, it is wonderful to feel the summer heat, with ice cream and smiling faces at last. A lot of our editorials have predominatly warned of the dangers of letting down our guard and rightly so. However, while all the advice is still very necessary, as variants of Covid are on the rise again, lets enjoy what is left of our summer while keeping the families happy and healthy. It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying the recent spell of sunshine and the doom and gloom of Covid banished from their thoughts. Summer may be here but even though it seems we may be able to mix more and enjoy it, we still have to be very careful . We must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We must also protect our mental and physical health as well and let the sunshine into our lives once again. This should also mean supporting those who have supported us over the past 15 months. This means appreciating our wonderful health care workers whether they are Doctors, Nurses or Health Service Ancillary staff, they have all played and are playing their part in keeping us safe and healthy. It also means shopping locally supporting our local businesses and securing local employment. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine and love promoting local community based sporting and voluntary organisations. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers. We hope you have a healthy and happy August with your smile, and the smiles of your family and friends brightening your days. Oh and don’t forget enjoy the ice cream and shop locally. Johnston welcomes potentially significant archaeological find - Donabate

Local Labour representative, Corina Johnston recently said, “I was contacted by a number of local residents last week regarding a potentially significant archaeological find on lands in Donabate which are subject to a live planning application.”I met the residents on site, who confirmed that they had been alerted to the find by a local farmer who stumbled upon the opening while sowing in the field. They immediately visited the site and unearthed what appears to be an underground tunnel with writing on one of the walls similar in nature to Ogham writing an early medieval alphabet.In view of the potential significance of the find Duncan Smith TD and I contacted the National Monuments Services and Fingal County Council and requested an urgent visit and an interim inspection of the site. In the meantime the entrance needs to be protected and closed off. The manner of the demolition of Turvey House a building of historical importance in 1987 must never be allowed occur again. National Monuments have confirmed to Duncan Smith TD and I that “this matter is currently being followed up on and an entry will be added to the Sites and Monuments

Record in due course.” I have ascertained that the find is located on land that is subject to a current planning application with An Bord Pleanála and I have notified the board of recent developments on the land which may have implications for the planning application. Plan This Early in Your Mortgage Application By Dave Kavanagh Every year, I see examples of people who have done all the right things in preparing to apply for a home loan to purchase their new home. They have saved regularly to build a deposit, maintained stable employment, avoided taking out new loans (and made sure any existing or previous loan obligations were paid in full and on time), conducted their current accounts efficiently, etc. but sadly, they don’t get to proceed with their house/apartment purchase (certainly not in the time frame they wanted to) because they cannot get their mortgage protection life cover accepted. This can be for a number of reasons but primarily it comes down to this.When you apply for any form of life cover, it is underwritten based on your current and past medical history. If someone has had any adverse medical conditions, if deemed serious enough, it could prevent cover being granted. More commonly, someone may have been recommended by their GP or consultant to have certain tests done, but they never got around to it. This would usually prompt a life company to postpone a decision until the tests are done and satisfactory results are available. Depending on the type of tests, this could take months to get sorted. For these reasons, anybody planning to apply for a mortgage should research how they will be underwritten for mortgage protection at an early

stage, particularly if they are concerned that a past medical issue could be a problem. In the current climate regarding Covid-19, many are even getting their mortgage protection in place early and extending the term so that they are certain of having cover in place, when it is time to draw down the home loan. Once cover is in place, any new medical issues that arise will not be relevant.

What an end to a busy, fun, and successful year! We concluded our year with a wonderful end-of-year party. We had face painting, music, bubbles, tug-of-war, races, and medals. Garda Michelle and Garda Colm, from Clontarf Garda station, joined us for the fun. The athletes loved their car,especially the siren, lights, and car horn. Thank you to all the volunteers, fundraisers, and supporters who helped make this happen. This year, we have welcomed many new members into our Young Athletes Club this year. We have also started our new junior basketball club for athletes from 8 years to 6

16 years old. Thanks to our fabulous fundraisers and to our volunteer coach Ciara, we were able to offer swimming lessons to many of our members in the Pop-Up Pool.The first two athletes to ever compete for our club came away with 4 medals between them. We are so, so proud of Tim and Becca. Finally, one of the first athletes to join our club is moving to Wexford. We’ll miss you Noah. We will see you when you are competing for Munster and Ireland in the future. Thank you to Eamon, Susan, and Lottie for all your support throughout the years. It’s not goodbye, it’s au revoir. Active Age for All Community News

It is that time of year again when you get to decide what exciting classes you will choose for the coming winter. Hard to think about it now with the sun shining outside, but we in Active Age have been working hard preparing our programme for 2022/2023. You will see many of your old favourites there such as Pilates, Yoga, Sit & Get Fit, Stronger for Longer Art and Singing and Music.Our free activities - Croquet, Boules and Bowls and Table Tennis will of course continue. We are also adding some classes for those who are not as interested in the more physical activities, with Drama and Crafts and hopefully Cooking to be added to our programme. 8

The photo competition theme is Positive ageing and it is open to people of all ages and abilities.DCU are looking to find rare gems of local talent from our communities to showcase our intergenerational engagement throughout Ireland. Tips for keeping down the back to school costs!

By Siobhan O’Neill White (mams.ie) As parents know, getting children back to school is stressful and expensive. On mams.ie, we have some tips which may help reduce that stress.The Back to school clothing and footwear allowance is a payment made to parents to help with the cost of schooling. Many most parents will have received it by now. However, if you are on a low income, social welfare payment or are struggling due to the rising cost of living you can and should apply for this payment. In cases where both parents are working, you may still qualify. Applications are open until September. Uniforms are a big expense, especially when schools have a ‘recommended supplier’. A crested jumper or cardigan can be €30-40 and jacket €50-60. Instead of buying from these shops, you can buy generic uniform items and have the school crest added. Look for places like Bestwear in Drogheda, who will embroider school crests on for €3-5. We were able to pick up a plain wool cardigan for €10 and plain PE jumper for €8 in Dunnes Stores at the Ilac SC this week and will have the crests added for €10. This is a significant saving. You can also request crests from your school and sew them on yourself. When buying primary school books, look for offers on places like Book Haven and Schoolbooks.ie Many secondary schools have moved to ipads which are great for kids. Everything is up to date and they are easier to carry than heavy books. If your child has an ipad, it is very important to protect it with a cover, so it doesn’t break if (when) they drop it. Hoco in he Ilac SC has a great range of ipad covers. For personalised stick on and iron on label, for uniforms, technology, books etc mynametags. ie labels are excellent. They have a clever coating meaning viruses like Covid cannot stick to them. You will need a sturdy schoolbag for your child and Smiggle have colourful bundles starting at €30. Ideal for primary school kids, the quality is excellent. For stationery, pencils, pens, maths sets and all the accessories your child needs, The Works stores are excellent value. Welcome to all the new people joining the Peninsula Pacers!

We belong to the Walking Ireland Group which is part of Sports Ireland. There are over 400 groups in the country.We do SHORT EASY WALKS/TRIPS - 5km for most people require average fitness & we also do LONG MODERATE TO DIFFICULT WALKS which are 10/12km and can be hard so one needs to be fairly fit and able to keep up with the group.We try to vary the walks but sometimes we will repeat them especially as we try to be environmentally & cost friendly; we use trains & buses as much as possible! We are out to keep fit but also to have fun!!!! Our most recent outing with 15 people was after taking the train from Donabate to Balbriggan, we walked from there to Laytown some 11/12km along the beach with the tide out, going through some forest area which emerged near a great pedestrian bridge which lead directly into the Village Inn for some good food and well deserved refreshments! We returned by train from Laytown to Donabate after a great day out! Our next walk coincides and links with the Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival, so it is local - Saturday 10

Pacers Trip to Epic Museum and the Custom House - On Saturday the 18th June the Peninsula Pacers embarked on a slightly different trip. Eight of us ventured into Dublin to visit the Epic Museum and the Custom House. Both venues being on Custom House Quay and an easy walk from Connolly Station it was more about exercising the mind rather than the legs! First stop was the Epic Museum in the CHQ building which tells the story, or rather a lot of stories, about the emigration of the Irish to all parts of the world. Beginning with the defeat of the Irish

at the Battle of Kinsale in 1601, which resulted in the ‘Flight of the Earls’ from 1607, to the present day. The departure of the Earls was a watershed in Irish history, symbolising the end of the old Gaelic order. You won’t find leprechauns and pots of gold here but you will learn the stories of Irish emigrants who became scientists, politicians, artists, poets and even outlaws.Following a relaxed lunch in the CHQ building we strolled down the quay to the Custom House where we were delighted to find that admission, and an official guide, were free.After a very interesting and informative hour, and having plumbed the long-suffering guides’ knowledge to the depths, we left him in peace, did the obligatory photo shoot and wended our way back to Connolly Station, There we were pleased to discover that we had time for a little refreshment before the train home. All in all a very enjoyable outing a great easy paced walk albeit in an urban setting and we can strongly recommend visits to both of these venues. Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed – Business as Usual

At Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed, we are continuing our activities over the summer months. We have exercise classes on Mondays, croquet at Newbridge House on Tuesdays, a cuppa and a chat at our Thursday morning get-togethers at the Scouts’ Den and work on our plots at Turvey Allotments at other times as the need arises.We also have regular outings to places of interest, most recently to the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, the Custom House Visitor Centre and the National Maritime Museum in Dun Laoghaire, three very different but interesting venues. These outings usually end with lunch at a local eatery. If you are interested in joining us, drop down to the Scouts’ Den any Thursday morning between 10:30am and 12:30pm or call Jim on 086-3694316. Donabate Parish Hall autumn programme starting soon!

Donabate Parish Hall autumn programme starts at the end of August with a large array of activities taking place every day, these range from Irish Dancing to Cards, from Montessori to Senior Citizens, from Traditional Music to Bridge. In October/November daily classes will be suspended for a number of weeks to facilitate Cultural & Creative events. These will include Photography Exhibitions and an Active Age for All Display to name but a few! Learn how to throw on the pottery wheel - Jill Kelly

by Carina Cunningham This Summer, why not learn how to throw on the pottery wheel in a oneto-one, three-hour introduction class to pottery with Jill Kelly in her beautiful studio ‘Clay and Cocoon’ in Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan.With over twenty years of teaching experience in adult education in various schools around Fingal, Jill has a passion for sharing her expertise and knowledge with people so that they can enjoy the many benefits of creating art. During her ceramics Diploma in NCAD she went to work for Michael Roche in Kiltra Bridge Pottery and learned to throw pots under his guidance. She then went on to work for Mel Bradley, hand painting on silk in the CraftTower, Pearse Street, where she learned how to paint on silk, something which she now incorporates in her semi-abstract botanical paintings. She went back to college to complete her post-grad in Art & Design Education and has been a special needs assistant for the last thirteen years in a secondary school.“I like to think my classes are a form of art therapy to help bring out everyone’s creative side. of making something with their own hands as satisfying as seeing the end product at the end of a class. We are all capable of creating art and I have seen this first hand with all of my students. Being in Ardgillan has made this process even more special for me and I’ve very excited to continue to take in new customers into my studio over the coming months”. Jill is planning to hold longer, more extensive classes in Autumn/ Winter later thisyear but also has some limited availability for the remainder of her summer classes (please see contact info below).These classes begin at 10:15 am and last for three hours with a maximum of two students per class. After, your pot will be fired twice in her own kiln, glazed, and will be ready for collection a few weeks later, ready for you to take home. Jill is also planning on taking parents and children aged seven and above for shorter classes at the beginning of October. Some of her bespoke creations, pottery, and art can be found in the craft shop in Ardgillan Castle, alongside new gift vouchers for her pottery classes that make for a lovely alternative gift for someone special. Niamh’s Mouthwatering Beef and Black Bean Sauce Serves 1

Ingredients

50g sliced onions 200g sliced beef 120 chopped mixed peppers 1 cup of whole grain rice 40g sliced mushrooms 40g black bean sauce

To make homemade black bean sauce: • • • • • • •

200g black beans 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 2 shallots 2 cloves garlic 5cm fresh root ginger 1 tablespoon chilli pepper flakes 1 & 1/2 teaspoons cornflour dissolved in 1 tablespoon water

Method to make sauce: 1.Mix the beans, shallots, chilli pepper flakes and rice wine vinegar together. Mash the beans well. Set aside. 2. Sauté the garlic and ginger in a small amount of oil on a pan until soft and flavours infuse. Add the mixture from the previous step. 3.Bring the mixture to the boil then simmer for 10-15minutes. To thicken the sauce, stir in the cornflour mixture. Simmer until thickened.

To cook the rice: Bring 1.5 cups of water to boil before adding a cup of rice and let it simmer before all the water has dissolved. Then it is ready to serve.

To cook the rest of the ingredients: 1.Add 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil into a nonstick pan (preferably). Gently cook stripped beef just to brown it then remove from pan. 2.Add vegetables to pan and lightly cook before adding black bean sauce and beef then cook till sauce begins to bubble and meat is cooked thoroughly. 3.Serve with cooked rice. LSA Breaking Records at National Track and Field Championships

The National Juvenile Track and Field Championships took place in Tullamore in July. It is the highlight of the Athletics Calendar, and this year LSA had two athletes competing. Éabha O’Farrell competed in U16 girls’ 3kg Hammer and Anna Gavigan competed in U19 Girls’ Discus. Both had qualified for this event by winning their respective competitions in the Dublin Championships in May and June.This was Anna’s final competition as a “Juvenile” and she signed off in style by winning the Discus Championships with a throw of 45.95m and setting a new U19 Championship record!This was Anna’s third major Championship win this summer. At the start of June, Anna won theSenior Girls’ Discus in the All-Ireland Schools Championship representing Loreto

Secondary School Balbriggan. Three weeks later she had her best success to date winning the 150thNational Senior Track and Field Championships.Anna is a great example of the Long Term Athlete Development policy. She has been training and competing with LSA since 2014 but it was only in 2018 that she began to win medals in the Dublin Championships and qualify for national finals. Later that year she started to train with coach Gerry Ronan, and has gone from strength to strength since then. Our younger Juveniles may well be inspired by being coached by a National Champion – Anna is part of the coaching team with Fiona’s group at our Thursday evening training session, and she also coached at our recent summer camp. Meanwhile, Éabha is another up and coming

LSA Juvenile Athlete, also coached by Gerry Ronan. Éabha set a new LSA club record for 3kg hammer when she threw 36.80m to finish 5th in the National Juvenile Championships.
