Spring has sprung and Summer is on the way !

May is here, flowers are blooming and Spring is passing into Summer. So, despite all we have been through with the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns we have a lot to look forward to. Things like the heat of the sun, long balmy summer evenings and the joy that comes with rising temperatures. For the sports lovers among us it means competition time either watching or participating in. Our friends in community/voluntary/sporting and charitable organisations who regularly contribute to this magazine will be actively engaging in all sorts of fundraising activities. Every year we are asked to either partake in or donate to these activities and now because of the current europeanwide inflation these good cases need our help more than in recent years. Also this Summer, a lot of us are really hoping to put the last 2+ years behind us and strive for a far healthier lifestyle than in the past. Then there are some of us who just want to chill and catch some rays. Nowadays we live a faster lifestyle than previous generations.We are also more aware than any generation in the past of of our need not only to live a healthier lifestyle, but also of our need to protect those less fortunate than ourselves. Currently there is also an emphasis on protecting our environment for our children and their children and we have an absolute duty to do so. There seems to be a greater onus put on promoting all these issues in the summer season than any other time of the year and we are sure this year will be no different. However having said all that, lets not forget or take for granted the traders and amenities in our local area, especially the retailers and services that were there for us in the dark days of the pandemic but who will now open their doors to the summer sun. So please remember to support or advertisers, support our local community groups and voluntary/sporting and charitable organisations. Oh and stay healthy and don’t forget the sun block!

Johnston welcomes funding for extended cycle path to Portrane Corina Johnston, Labour Party Local Representative has welcomed the recent announcement of funding by the National Transport Authority which will facilitate an extension of the existing cycle path on the Donabate Distributor Road to Portrane. She said; “I am very pleased to have been informed that €1,225,000 has recently been allocated to Fingal County Council by the National Transport Authority(NTA) as part of its Active Travel Investment Grants 2022.” Corina continued; “ In response to representations from Duncan Smith TD and I the NTA confirmed that this project includes the development and implementation of cycle protection measures at various locations along the relevant stretch of road. These measures will include the installation of uncontrolled crossing points, junction build outs and the construction of kerb protected cycle lanes.”Johnston added;” Fingal County Council in response to a question submitted to a recent council meeting on my behalf by my colleague Cllr Robert O’Donoghue confirmed that this project proposes to link the existing cycle path from the West along the newly constructed Distributor Road to the junction of Portrane Avenue in Portrane. The funding allocated for this scheme is for the development of design options, preliminary & detailed design and implementation of protected cycling infrastructure on the ground. The Council’s Active Travel Unit is currently procuring a consultant to work on this among other projects in the programme of works for 2022. Once the options report is available, this will progress to detailed design and implementation by year end.“ Johnston concluded;”I am very pleased that this project has been prioritised and funding awarded by the NTA and look forward to its implementation. When completed this will enhance cycle links between Donabate and Portrane and ultimately provide a direct cycle link to Malahide and Newbridge Demesne via the Broadmeadow Way Greenway which is projected to be delivered in 2025. “

Whist in Donabate Parish Hall Every Monday

There has been a card playing group in Donabate for as long as anyone can remember, for at least the last forty years. Every Monday night the group gather at 7.30 pm in the parish hall to play whist. Every player pays €7, and the

amount collected is paid out in winnings after hall rental expenses are deducted. We did have eighteen months down time during the pandemic lockdown, but we are delighted to be back again and fully operational. We are of course always

looking for new members, and you can be sure of a warm welcome to our group. If you play cards at all you will quickly get the hang of Whist as whist is the cornerstone of so many card games.

Can Clever Planning Prevent Paying Tax? By Dave Kavanagh A tax that is often not considered and doesn’t usually make the Budget headlines each year is Capital Acquisition Tax. In 2019 in Ireland, there was €455 million collected in Capital Acquisition Tax. This covers both inheritance tax and gift tax. It also includes estates that may have been taxed in previous generations. For example, if someone left an estate worth €2,000,000 to an only daughter, she would (in the current tax year) have a tax bill of almost €550,000. After she pays the bill and puts what’s left in the bank, any interest is taxed (DIRT). Guess what happens when she passes and leaves her estate behind? It’s taxed again! Spouses can leave any amount to each other tax free. After that, the three thresholds are, a) Children - €335,000, b) Other close relatives €32,500 and c) All others (including cohabiting partners) - €16,250. Everything received above these is taxed at 33%. So, is there any way to prevent it? There are two main actions that can either reduce or eradicate such a tax bill. The first is to take the time to plan when making a will. Let’s say a value of €750,000 was being left to 2 adult children. (Not a big estate if you combine a house, savings and a life policy). This would create a tax bill of over €25,000. Instead, if €670,000 of it was left to the 2 children and the balance between a few grandchildren, there is no tax bill.

The second thing that can be done is for the person leaving the estate to take out a Section 72 plan. This is a type of life policy that is allowed to pay any tax liability without adding to the value of the estate. It becomes particularly important for anybody that does not have children to plan things out, as even other relatives can only receive €32,500 before any balance is taxed. These thresholds are particularly important for anybody in the process of planning or making their will.

Leithinis Donabate Portrane CCE

Leithinis Donabate Portrane CCE were delighted to be invited to play some tunes at the relaunch of the Parish Hall. Other acts included Ukele United and Donabate Dramatic Society. The Hall is looking fantastic and is a great community facility that is used by many local groups. A great evening was had by all.Our lessons resumed on Monday 25th April following the Easter Break.Our recent slow sessions led by Erin have been very successful in allowing members to participate in playing tunes in

a friendly and fun environment , however we are always improving and to cater for the varying abilities we have refined the times of these sessions: 7.45pm to 8.30pm Junior Members - 8.30pm to 9.15pm slow tempo to suit all adult members - 9.15pm to 9.45pm faster tempo to suit adult members.The next 3 sessions will be held in the Parish Hall on : Friday 13th May and Friday 27th May. There will be a €5 cost per family to cover costs. We hope to see many of our members at these musical sessions.

Some people from BUGS based in Blanchardstown; whom many of us play with on a Wednesday night led by Tania Cahill & some Donabate folk led by Phil O Brien had a little session at the re launch in the Parish Hall. It was great fun and enjoyed by all. The group aim to play about one a month and the next session is Friday 20th May. If you play a bit already and are interested drop in at 7 30pm. 6

Peninsula Pacers Rush to Rogerstown 12km walk

The Peninsula Pacers went on a great 12km 3hr walk on a Saturday in mid April. The route was really interesting & the weather was only glorious. We parked at the Millbank Theatre / Rush Library and headed down the Sandy Lane to the South Shore beach where the beautiful vista of Lambay Island and The Burrow & 8

Portrane awaited us! Turning right we headed to Rogerstown Harbour and on to the NEW Rogerstown Park passing along by fields of tulips then along a thin rough road which hugged the inner estuary. This walk is only possible at low tide! We returned to the Harbour and headed up the Chanel Rd back to our cars. Finally we went

for a delicious lunch/dinner at The Man of War Pub - an original of the species! Good food and full of character now under new management. It was a lovely day and really enjoyed by all. By Jack Shanley Almost 50 years after it was made, Nicolas Roeg’s ‘Don’t Look Now’ remains to this day one of the great horror masterpieces in cinematic history. Not only is it frightening but it pulls you in and makes you feel as lost as the two main characters while they wander the streets of Venice. The must-see 1973 classic was adapted from Daphne du Maurier’s book of short stories ‘Not After Midnight’, released in 1971. Very skilfully made (cinematography, sound, writing, editing), we’re treated to devastatingly good performances from Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. We really feel their pain and intense sorrow which is essentially the core of the film. ‘Don’t Look Now’ delves into the interesting topic of the psychology of grief and how the death of a child can have a massive effect on a relationship. It is set in this mesmerising dark dream-like city of Venice. In a way the dark look depicts how the couple feel after the loss of their daughter. Devastating, poignant and beautiful all in one, ‘Don’t Look Now’ is very highly regarded by film critics around the world and by some of the greatest directors we’ve seen over the past 30 years, influencing the likes of Academy Award Winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting), Academy Award Winner Steven Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, Traffic) and the great Christopher Nolan (Inception, Interstellar). The film is so highly regarded that in 1999, the British Film Institute acknowledged the importance of Roeg and his filmography by naming ‘Don’t Look Now’ the eighth greatest British film of all time in its Top 100 British films poll. Synopsis: Following the death of their daughter, John (Donald Sutherland) and his wife Laura ( Julie Christie) head to Venice where John is commissioned to restore a church. There, John and his wife Laura meet two sisters (Hilary Mason, Clelia Matania) who claim they are in touch with the spirit of their daughter. Laura believes them, but John doesn’t until he catches sight of what looks like his daughter running through the streets of Venice. Men’s Shed Looking for New Members Donabate Portrane shedders are a busy lot. There’s not much spare time, with exercise classes at the Scouts’ Den on Mondays, croquet and boules at Newbridge House on Tuesdays, coffee and chat at the Scouts’ Den on Thursdays, tending the plots at Turvey Allotments on other days and occasional outings to place of interest. A vine in our greenhouse, which was thought to have died, is now thriving and has been nicknamed Lazarus. Who knows, next autumn, along with the usual spuds and onions, we may be harvesting and pressing our own grapes. Watch out for the latest offering from the Men’s Shed - Châteauneuf-du-Turvey! Now that we’ve had our first proper AGM in nearly three years, we’re open for new members and to suggestions for other activities. Local Special Olympics Club Need Volunteers

Special Olympics is an all-Ireland sports organisation for people with an intellectual disability. Donabate Portrane Special Olympics Club (DPSOC) is one of 293 Special Olympics clubs across Ireland. The club has over 80 athletes and is run by over 40 volunteers, who give of their time freely to support the athletes and help them develop their sporting skills. If you would like to volunteer your time on a weekly basis, the club is always on the lookout for new volunteers. The club is specifically for younger athletes, aged 4 – 12. Training sessions take place every Saturday at 11:30, 12:30 and 13:30 in the Donabate Portrane Educate Together National School. Sessions are volunteer led and no previous sport or coaching experience is necessary. All you need is a willingness to get involved and have fun. New members are always welcome. For further information please email dpsoclub@gmail.com If you have a child who would like to become an athlete in the club we have a waiting list for new members. Email us to get your child added to the list. Lastly we would like to congratulate Special Olympics volunteer Suzanne Dunne who completed her 5th marathon on Saturday the 19th of March in aid of the club. Suzanne raised €1,900 for DPSOC by completing 5 marathons over a 5 month period! 12

Launch of Newly Refurbished Donabate Parish Hall

In late March the Parish Hall had an event to launch the newly refurbished Parish Hall. Due to covid concerns numbers were limited.Our Mayor of Fingal Seána Ó Rodaigh who arrived by train an active traveller! was the guest speaker. Fr Pat Reilly PP spoke on behalf of the Parish Hall Committee and the community. Both of them focused on the importance of community and places that cater for the depth & breadth of activities that take place in our area. The Parish Hall mainly caters for Cultural Activities, Recreational, Meetings & events.The Programme now runs with daily activities eg Senior Citizens, Flower Friends, Montessori, Bridge Club, Eggheadz Youth Yoga & Well-being, Leithinis Traditional Music, Irish Dancing, UkuleleUnited etc. Then on a few occasions during the year the 14

daily activities are suspended for about three weeks to facilitate Drama, Exhibitions and special events to take place. eg Through the Lens Photography Exhibition, The Film Club marked International Women’s Day for the Bleeding Pig and the Dramatic Society production in late April.Fr Pat thanked all that had a part to play in the refurbishment particularly FCC who grant aided the works and our councillors who supported these grants being allocated in the chamber.The grants came from The Community Enhancement Scheme, The Community Facilities & Remedial Works Scheme, Covid 19 Emergency Funding, Community Activities Funding Scheme and the Village Renewal Scheme.A number of public representatives came on the night and a big thanks is extended

to them Duncan Smith TD ( who uses the hall) Cllr Adrian Henchy, Cllr Paul Mulville, Cllr Rob O Donoghue, Cllr Joe OBrien & Corina Johnston. He particularly thanked the Parish Hall Committee, Bernie Guillespie from the Parish Office, Breda Dockrell & Jim O Donohoe for their efforts in bringing this project to fruition. He outlined all the people who keep the place going on a day to day basis with such incredible voluntary work. He spoke of all the tradesmen & suppliers who had gone beyond the call of duty in work done on the Parish Hall.On the night some Leithinis CCÉ played a few tunes & UkuleleUnited played and sang a few songs - all which was very much enjoyed! ACTIVE AGE for ALL news – Failte Isteach

It’s great to be back to classes and socialising after our Easter break. Our classes will run till the end of May. Active Age members are now involved in the Failte Isteach Programme with DPCC and Fingal County Council. We put out a call to our members for those who wished to be involved in this programme for teaching conversational English and were surprised at the response – 20 members of Active Age are now involved. We are being trained by those who have worked before with this programme. We will be working primarily with those who have newly arrived in Donabate from Ukraine, but conversational English will be available to people from anywhere who are new to our area. At the first group meeting of Failte Isteach many teachers emerged and people who had worked abroad and taught English. The encouragement from those who had previously worked on this programme was most reassuring and it became clear that you don’t need to be a teacher particularly – that if you just want to contribute and

communicate with people who have a real need to belong somewhere at this point in their lives. If you know of anyone who needs to feel more connected to their community by attending Failte Isteach classes, do let them know that they will be happening, and tell them to leave their name at the Community Centre. On the 10th of May we will hold a Coffee Morning for Sick Children with the Children’s Health Foundation and we hope that we will get the usual great support from our members and neighbours. We have started a new Acorn Tablet Try Out programme to digitally connect our older members. Having completed our first programme with many satisfied and new digitally connected customers. Niamh’s Luscious Nutella Cheesecake Although most of my recipes take more of a healthy approach, it is important to understand thattreats can be part of a healthy diet, just once they don’t become too often! I had a lot of chocolatey fun making this recipe with my niece and nephews as a treat! Quite simple but involves biscuit bashing, melting, stirring, mixing, spooning, patience and sticky chocolatey fingers and faces! I hope you enjoy as much as we did making it!

Ingredients: • • • •

300g dark chocolate digestive biscuits 120g butter 250g mascarpone 400g nutella

You can use a greased/non-stick springform based tin or simply a plate.

Method: 1.Place the biscuits in a strong bag that can be tied and can withstand the force of a rolling pin!(I use an empty breakfast cereal bag). Bash the biscuits using a rolling pin or other utensils until they form fine crumbs.Alternatively you could blitz the biscuits in a food processor/ blender. 2.Melt the butter in a saucepan. Take off the heat and stir in the biscuit crumbs until well mixed. 3.Tip the biscuit mixture into the tin and press down firmly with the back of a spoon to make a smooth and even surface.

Place in the fridge to chill while making the filling. 4.Place the nutella and mascarpone in a mixing bowl and combine well together. It helps if the nutella has been heated gently beforehand. 5. Spoon the nutella/mascarpone mixture on top of the biscuit base and place back in the fridge to chill for a 2-3hours or overnight. 6. Eat as it is or decorate as you like! Ardgillan Artists Collective Studios: Nicola Weldon by Carina Cnnningham Did you know that our fabulous Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan has opened its doors to a collection of artists? Welcome to “Ardgillan Artists Collective Studios”. All crafts and artists candidates had to go through a rigorous application and interview, to be awarded a designated studio. The board of management at Ardgillan Castle made the decision on who could join the castle in this new venture. This month we would like to introduce you to the lovely artist Nicola Weldon. Nicola works mostly with clay and plaster as mediums. The unique process that she uses with clay captures impressions of wild meadows, flowers, foliage, and seaweeds. By working in monochrome or by creating contrast through the delicate use of colour, together with her attention to detail, Nicola’s aim is to reproduce the wildness of nature in each image. Nicola said. “I love being based at the Castle, together with 10 other artists and the fact that each artist’s work is so different. Having access to the extraordinary selection of flowers and plants from the grounds at Ardgillan for my work, makes it even more enjoyable. Recently, I have been enjoying exploring plaster and how it lends itself to the relief effect. I believe my framed plaster reliefs are a good contrast to my other work.” You can find Nicola’s pieces on display at Ardgillan Castle Arts and Crafts Shop , as well as in her studio in the castle.
