Lets take care and enjoy St Paddy’s Day ! With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed, we at Locals Magazines are like you, thankful we may be beginning to enjoy life again. Plans are going ahead for our first proper St Patrick’s Day in two years. Children and community groups are spending their time organising and decorating floats. Bands from all over the country are heading for our towns and villages in Fingal and Dublin city. We look forward to the sea of green, the music, and the joy of the spectacular parades celebrating our patron saint’s day that are the envy of the world. However we realise we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of variants of Covid 19 nationwide if we don’t continue to take care. Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past two years. In celebrating the re-opening after lockdown we should recall local shops and enterprises going above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly during the lockdown and now it time to give back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print during this crisis. With some experts predicting yet another phase if we are not careful, we must all continue to grasp this new era and continue to pull together. This means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Johnston welcomes progress at Ballymastone Car Park

Corina Johnston, Labour Party area representative has welcomed the resurfacing of the Ballymastone sports ground car park which was carried out recently. This follows on from an on-site meeting on 8th February arranged by Duncan Smith TD and attended by Duncan, Corina Johnston and senior officials from Fingal County Council. Johnston said; “At the meeting I raised my serious concerns regarding the condition and safety of the car park for children and adults using the sports facilities in Ballymastone. I also raised the need for public lighting especially in the winter when so many children/youths are entering and exiting the clubs grounds for training into a dark car park and the need for bicycle racks to facilitate those cycling to the sports grounds. “ Johnston continued; “ The officials stated they could not provide a hard surface given the huge cost involved, however the alternative temporary surface will be repaired whenever required. We also received a commitment that bicycle racks will be installed shortly.” Corina added; “Last year I made a submission to Fingal County Council as part of the Ballymastone Recreational Hub plan public consultation process that the existing car park and it’s upgrade be included in the project. Regrettably my submission and many others from concerned parents were rejected by Fingal County Council. A major error in my opinion. I firmly believe that the existing car park which is located adjacent to the existing grass and all weather facilities will continue to be required and upgraded. This can best be achieved by its inclusion in the Ballymastone recreational hub project. “ Johnston concluded; “ We will continue to campaign for this objective and to this end we have submitted a motion for the council meeting on 17th February next. The motion recommends that the existing plans for the hub be revised to include the existing car park and it’s upgrading. We will keep you informed of developments.” 4

Henchy welcomes Capital Sports Grants Cllr Adrian Henchy has said he is “ absolutely delighted to confirm the Capital Sports Grants announced for 2022 have been a very successful outcome for a number of Sporting clubs and organisations across the DonabatePortrane peninsula. My sincere thanks to my colleagues Minister Darragh O Brien and Minister Jack Chambers who gave me the time on many occasions to strongly support my local clubs in their endeavours to improve on and off the playing facilities. I am especially grateful to Minister Chambers who met with me in recent weeks giving me the opportunity to strongly put forward my case on the merits of the clubs across Donabate Portrane. Sincere thanks and recognition to all of these individuals, you know who you are, your clubs know who you are and we as a wider local community are lucky to have you driving these enormous improvements in our sporting facilities across Donabate Portrane..With overall funding of well over €550,000 awarded across Donabate Portrane, congratulations to the following clubs:Donabate Portrane Community Centre Gym Adaptation Multi-sport, Balcarrick Golf Club- Balcarrick women into golf development.Donabate Golf Club - Equipment and Drainage, The

The overall record funding allocation both nationally and for Donabate Portrane was secured following negotiations between Minister with responsibility for Sport Jack Chambers and Michael McGrath, Public Expenditure Minister.These allocations are the country’s largest ever Sports Capital & Equipment Programme distribution. The assessment process for grant provision was adjusted for this year’s programme with greater marks awarded to projects which would increase female participation, as well as increasing participation for people with disabilities.Under the Sports Capital Programme over 13,000 projects have now benefited from sports capital funding since 1998, bringing the total allocations in that time to over €1billion. Finally once again on behalf of everyone in our local community a massive thanks and recognition to all our local clubs for the incredible work you do and congratulations to all the successful clubs in been rewarded Capital Sports funding, an immensely proud time for the Club Executives, teams and club members.

What if your income gets stopped? By Dave Kavanagh When advising clients and analysing their finances, I ask them how long (if at all) their employer will pay them if they are out of work long term due to illness or injury. In some cases, it is standard and can be something like 3 months at full pay, then 3 months at half pay and then a pensionable rate of pay. For many, they are not sure and when they look through their employment contract, it states “at employer’s discretion”. Many people realised how vulnerable they were when the pandemic arrived, dropping some incomes from €600 or €800 per week down to €350 of PUP. Many don’t give much consideration to how they would cope if they suffered a loss of income for an extended period because they think “it’ll never happen to me”. Sadly, many find out the hard way following an injury or illness that keeps them out of work for months or even years. This is where having Income Protection in place, can be the difference between maintaining a level of income that keeps your lifestyle virtually unchanged, or dropping to a level that could force you to use up any savings and also get into financial difficulty. So how does it work? Depending on your circumstances, you choose an appropriate level of cover. This is based on not exceeding 75% of your salary, less any state income entitlement. You also

choose a “deferred period” which refers to how long you are off work before payments commence. The premiums are based on factors like your age and occupation, as some occupations would leave you more at risk of not being able to work. If dropping from your current income to the state benefit of €208 per week is something that would impact badly on you, perhaps it is time to consider.

Lambay Sports & Athletics - a busy vibrant athletic club

Lambay Sports & Athletics) is Donabate & Portrane’s busy vibrant athletic club, just emerging out of lockdown and ready to embrace an exciting future ahead! LSA is as rapidly growing local athletic club, established in 2011. We promote health, well-being, and physical fitness with a lot of fun for all ages and all abilities throughout the community. The club is growing from strength to strength with over 300 members. Our busy little club has competed in some recent events where our adult and juvenile members have excelled in their personal goals. Creating new records at our local parkrun to winning medals at the National Indoor Masters Championships 2022 in Athlone. Our adults also take part in events organized by other Athletics Ireland clubs such as the Raheny 5 Mile earlier this year, the Lusk 4 mile in March and the Dublin City Marathon in October. We cater for all abilities with groups starting from complete beginners with our walking and Couch to 5k group to intermediate and advanced intervals. Our juveniles age groups have recently competed in the

Dublin Indoor Championships 2022 in Abbotstown. For many it was their first experience of the National Indoor Arena and they loved it and were wonderful ambassadors for the club. There were smiles and fun all around and new PB’s created. Recently Donabate Parish Hall as part of their Cultural Programme had or will have: The Through the Lens Photography Group put on an exhibition on the last weekend in February.The Bleeding Pig Cultural Group are putting on a film early March to celebrate International Women’s Day -The Donabate Dramatic Society will have a production at the end of April. During the time slots for these events to take place the daily activities are suspended. This programming approach allows for blocked events and daily activities to co-exist to provide for the whole communities needs. The plan at present is to close

The Tower Singing Circle celebrates Burns Night

On Monday 24th January The Tower Singing Circle celebrated the songs, poetry and music of Scotland’s poet Robert Burns. The Donabate/ Portrane peninsula has quite a few residents who are from Scotland and we welcomed them to join us in our celebration.Local piper Mick McNamara started off the celebrations with a rousing “Scotland the Brave” and this was followed by the traditional “Address to the Haggis”. Janey Wylie wielded her knife with great gusto as she said“An’ cut ye up wi’ ready slight,Trenching your gushing entrails bright,” to loud applause.Anne Condon read “The Selkirk Grace” and “To the Immortal Memory” was given by Hugh Carroll who read “The Birl for Burns” by Seamus Heaney. Former Portrane resident but now living in Calgary, Canada, Sean Buckley, gave a very complimentary “Toast to the Lassies” and Eilish McDermott gave a less than complimentary “Reply to the Toast to the Lassies” We were joined by our guests for the evening - Angela and Jack Plunkett. Originally from Glasgow, Angela and Jack have a huge repertoire of songs.We were delighted to welcome Emily Peart full time Highland Dance Tutor from the Sollus School of Highland Dance based in the Sollus Centre in the village of Bready just 7 miles from Derry. Emily performed the Highland Fling.Margaret Godwin introduced members of The Tower Singing Singers and visitors who sang a variety of Burns and Scottish songs.

Leithinis now returning to live lessons and sessions

After a year and 11 months of lessons over zoom our face to face classes resumed on the 7th February. We now have 49 students taking lessons in 9 different instruments. In addition to our classes our Grupai Cheoil Gatherings for members are back up and running. The next session will be on the 4th of March in the Parish Hall which will be a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. We would strongly encourage all our members to partake in these sessions as they allow our students to play the tunes they have learned at the lessons with other students who are at a similar level.We have alot of experienced and talented traditional Musicians living on the Peninsula. If you are interested in seeing them showcasing their skills come along to the Traditional Irish Music Sessions led by Denis Stack in Keelings on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 9pm. Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed has now resumed our pre-Covid activities, albeit with caution, withexercise classes on Monday mornings, croquet & boules on Tuesday mornings, coffee & chat on Thursday mornings and plans being made for an outing soon. We are also exploring how to get involved building owl boxes, under the guidance of the Barn Owl Project. Recently, we held our first proper AGM in two years, at which a new committee was elected, with Seán Buckley as our Chairman. We also completed our self-assembly storage shed, which proved to be a greater challenge than the instructions implied. Active Age for All started their year with a very successful AGM in January and a new Committee was elected. Registration for classes took place at the beginning of February and we had a great response with most classes nearly full. People are delighted to get back to in-person classes once again. They started on the 14th of February, but we do have some places left in Chair Yoga, Singing, Music, and Bridge. So come along and try a new activity this Spring! Home Cook Recipes

Scrumptious protein pancakes just for you Protein has become a bit of a buzz word and although most of us in Ireland DO eat enough protein for what our bodies need, a lot of us tend to eat the majority of our protein in our evening meal. Research has shownthat it is more beneficial to try and eat food sources of protein throughout the day rather than a load all at once! Having protein in this way and especially following exercise that uses our muscles will help to keep our muscle and our bodies lean. And the great news is that applies to everyone, no matter your age. Here is a recipe for ‘protein pancakes’ which uses basic food ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen!

Ingredients

Makes 5 x 100g FULFILLING Pancakes!!!

3 eggs 200g oats 300ml high protein milk 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Method 1. Blitz the oats in a blender/nutri bullet until they turn into a flour like mix. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until mixed thoroughly. 3. Heat a non stick pan. 4. When the pan is hot pour some of the mixture on and allow to cook for 2-3 minutes. (Covering the pancakes will help them cook faster). 5. When the edges start to lightly brown and look dry and bubbles start appearing

on the pancake surface,flip the pancake over and cook the other side. Top them off as you like and GOBBLE EM UP!!!! (I love mine with peanut butter, sliced banana and dark chocolate drizzled on top as a scrumptious and VERY satisfying treat!) With almost 1,200 members, St Pats is the biggest sports club in Donabate Portrane. They’ve been going from strength to strength year on year. They now field 9 adult teams in Mens & Ladies Football, Hurling, Gaelic For Mothers & Others along with social football for Dads & Others. They have Juvenile Football for boys & girls at all ages and Hurling / Camogie from U13 / U11 downwards. Their Academy for children born 2015, 2016 or 2017 takes place on Saturday mornings.
