Lets stay safe and enjoy our lives this Valentine’s Day Over the past 2 years we have come through a lot. We have come through and are going through lockdowns and curfews. We have been asked to isolate if we have been in touch with our family and friends who have tested positive and we have been told we must ‘elbow greet’ instead of hug those we love and meet. However all of these restrictions have been imposed in a loving way by our Government to try and keep us safe and healthy. It has also been recommended by Health experts that we have no less than three vaccinations to date. This has all been proposed to try and keep our loved ones safe and healthy and to try and safeguard our elderly and our future generations. This Valentine’s Day will be yet another one unlike others we had gotten used to, whether we are teenage lovers or more mature partners. However that does not mean that we cannot show love to those who mean the most to us. Remember. chocolate shops, florists and restaurants and hotels are all open (at the time of going to press) Unlike any other period in history we have the means to stay in touch and communicate without meeting in person, whether that be through a mobile phone call or Facetime or Zoom or whatever technology we have at hand. The worldwide communications structure is so vast now that we need never feel alone and can send messages of love and support to those we care most about. We should also all shop locally and ensure the local jobs of our neighbours and friends. We all know the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others. Community transfer of the Omicron variant of the virus seems to be the problem so lets not go back to meeting numbers of people and lets be careful and safe. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible. We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together once again as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as soon as possible and stay safe and enjoy our lives while being responsible. So please, obey the rules, stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all our families and those we love. Have a happy and safe Valentine’s Day from all of us in the Locals team.

99 year old DP Senior Citizen went pony trekking

It is never too late and you’re never too old ! Our picture shows our member Wendy Geary (99) enjoying a horse ride on Calvin, a perfect horse gentleman, on a lovely sunny morning in Corballis in January. All thanks to Henry Smith and Lisa Dandy of Corballis Farm Trekking for organising this for Wendy, she was absolutely thrilled to be on horseback again after so many years and thoroughly enjoyed herself. In fact she’s now in training for an outing on her 100th birthday in April !

£1000 to SVDP from the Through the Lens 2022 Calendar

The Through the Lens Photographic Club are pleased to report a very successful 2022 calendar sale last December. As we had done the previous year we sponsored the local St Vincent de Paul committee again this year and are delighted to have been able to contribute €1000 to this very worthy cause. The theme for the calendar has always been on local scenes and events, and as the years go by this could provide some historical reference in our rapidly expanding community. We know that a lot of these calendars are sent away to family and friends abroad, so it’s nice to think that pictures of our peninsula are gracing walls around the globe!

The AAfA AGM was held on the 27th January by Zoom and we are delighted to say that we have our new Committee in place for the next year. In the Chairperson’s welcome it was clear that the past 2 years have been very challenging due to ‘you know what’! The Committee showed great resilience and patience and keep up their spirits even when we reached the 3rd round of the ‘you know what’. Thankfully things began to look up at the end of last summer and, because of the incredibly high vaccination rate in our age profile, we did manage to run our classes from September until Christmas and that was wonderful for everyone concerned. We have not heard of a single outbreak that was linked to classes. Thank you everyone for playing your part. With Omicron’s arrival, and due to the predicted peak for during January, we have delayed our start until early this month. If you have missed our registration days for classes, don’t panic – you can just text us on 086 8806808 with your name and we can arrange to get all set up for you. Boules Coaching Course -Tues 8th Feb at 2.00pm

Just before Christmas a New Boules Court was put in at Newbridge House by FCC with the idea that a number of groups could get good use out of it; as it is such a fun & accessible activity for all. A Boules Coaching Course has been organised with Tom Donlon (Bayside Boules) on Tuesday 8th February at 2 00pm for people to learn the basic rules & techniques of the game. It is hoped that various organisations will come to learn how to play so we are all on the same page! eg Active Age for All, Senior Citizens, Men’s Shed, LSA, and groups with mobility & accessibility issues as boules is a perfect activity. Improve your health, improve your wealth! By Dave Kavanagh Another start of a year and despite Covid 19 still present, many people will still be intent on em-barking on making some positive changes or improvements in their lives. The most recognisable of these is the ‘losing weight” one. It’s worth noting that if done properly, losing weight can have the added bonus of leaving you with more money at the end of each month. So how does that work? Well, by “doing it properly” I refer to NOT going on a diet, or buying products with magic properties that will make the weight just fall off. Instead, making small, sustainable lifestyle changes. It can be adding some exercise in week 1, drinking more water (and less alcohol/ sugar laden drinks) in week 2, reducing portion sizes in week 3, substituting things like chips for wholegrain rice or pasta in week 4, breaking the association of biscuits/cakes whenever you have a coffee or tea in week 5, etc., etc. Doing it this way, makes it sustainable and when weight is dropped slower over a longer period of time, it is far more likely to be kept off. So how does that improve your wealth? When I analyse people’s spending budgets, it’s clear that takeaways, alco-hol, sweets, cakes biscuits etc., pop up quite frequently. If you keep track of the savings when you cut down on many of these things, it’s easy to see how much you can save. Keeping a detailed spending budget

where you log every day what you spend (not just the name of the shop, but the actual items) Lets you look back and accurately see what you have spent on the things you actual-ly want to cut down on (one person told me “I can’t believe I ate 38 packets of crisps last month!!”) As for the xmas leftover junk, it can either go in the waste or on your waist. Make the right choices, one day at a time, and you bank account will thank you.

Fingal Community Groups invited to apply for Community Activities Funding

Community and voluntary groups in Fingal are invited to apply for funding under the 2022 Community Activities Fund.The Community Activities Fund (CAF) is a once-off fund that provides grants to assist community and voluntary groups with facilities upgrades, equipment purchase and running costs. The CAF is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development with Fingal allocated €301,042 in funding for groups across the county. The CAF is administered by Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs) in each Local Authority area. It is part of the wider Community Enhancement Programme, which has funded over 8,000 projects in urban and rural communities throughout Ireland since first being launched in 2018. Applications are now being sought from community and voluntary groups in Fingal for grants up to a maximum of €15,000 with a closing date for applications of Friday, February 18, 2022 at 6:00 pm. Commenting on the announcement, AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council said: “The work of the community and

voluntary sector is highly valued by Fingal County Council.The Community Activities Fund will assist community groups with the valuable work they do within our communities. I would advise community groups to examine the CAF and avail of the opportunity to apply for funding if it is relevant to their activities.” Declan Ryan, Chief Officer of the Fingal Local Community Development Committee added: “The Community Activities Fund comes from within the Community Enhancement Programme group of funds. These funds have been availed of widely by community groups in Fingal in recent years, which has resulted in valuable funding being distributed to groups in disadvantaged areas in particular. The new CAF has the added benefit of allowing applications for both capital costs and operating costs. This added flexibility is very welcome. LSA Masters compete in 1st Cross Country

History was made on 9th January, when three of LSA Masters athletes took part in our first ever Masters Cross Country in St Anne’s Park, Raheny. The atmosphere was electric with all the local Dublin Clubs being represented. We are very proud of our LSA athletes Patrick Phillips, Steven Rice, Damien Hand, and Donal Iremonger for flying the LSA flag at this event. Pat Hooper would be delighted that we had a team out for a Masters XC race. He was a great supporter and friend to our club and it’s fitting that it’s the introduction of the Pat Hooper Perpetual trophy at this event. Congratulations to Raheny Shamrocks on winning the inaugural Pat Hooper Cup and to the for hosting such a well-run event. D P Special Olympics Club – Polar Plunge

One of the exciting things about becoming an established club is seeing our traditions take shape, and some of these are based around Christmas.This year was our second time to take part in the “Polar Plunge” challenge for Special Olympics Ireland; we receive fantastic support from our National body and we welcomed the opportunity to get “Freezin’ for a Reason” and raise some funds. to March. Suzanne selected our club to benefit from this amazing achievement. Suzanne has already completed her marathons for November and December. We are all incredibly awed and grateful; it is one thing to take part in an “official” marathon with huge support on the route, and quite another to take on 5 marathons in the local area with just a handful of supporters. No Hibernation for DP Men’s Shed

Although we’ve had to curtail our activities due to public health restrictions, Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed has not been hibernating over the winter. Our plots at Turvey Allotments have been made ready for the coming growing season. Raised beds have been installed in our greenhouse with new imported topsoil; paving slabs have been laid and a water storage tank installed. All of this was made possible with a grant under the Community Enhancement Programme 2021, a scheme funded by the Department of Rural & Community Development and administered by

Fingal County Council’s Local Community Development Committee. We have also installed a storage shed beside our portacabin at the Donabate Sea Scout’s den. The self-assembly kit and other required materials were purchased with a grant under the COVID-19 Emergency Funding (Round 2) operated by Fingal County Council’s Local Community Development Committee. We hope that, with easing Covid-19 restriction we will soon be able to resume all of our activities. If you are interested in joining us, please contact our PRO, Jim, on 086-3694316.

Village Enhancement Scheme at the Parish Hall

In the 2021 Town and Village Streetscape Enhancement scheme, an initiative funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) & administered by FCC Development Section, the Parish Hall Committee were part funded for outdoor works at the Parish Hall & Church. The tree lined boundary facing the graveyard and backing on to the railway has been pruned back, the trees trimmed and the undergrowth cleared out. New pots and miniature trees have been put in front of the hall. In the Springtime the railings, gates and doors of the

church will be restored and painted as part of this programme. Some works have already started by clearing at the railings in preparation for painting as the weather improves. As regards what is happening inside the Parish Hall - there has been some curtailment of daily activities and classes and very few events taking place, but hopefully with covid restrictions easing there will be more activities and events taking off. It is not still clear whether it will be possible to run the Cultural 3 Week Activity Block for in Spring during February/ March and it may have to be moved

to a later time in the summer; all will depend on public health restrictions. It is envisaged that the situation will improve as regards public health and as there are only certain times still available to rent in the Parish Hall and a rapidly expanding population it might be a good idea to contact Bernie at stpatricksrcdonabate@gmail.com or any queries to 01 8434574 to see if there is availability to suit your needs. Valentine’s Day Romantic Rawlos Try these for a tasty, romantic Valentine’s day or an any day treat. Blitzing up dates in a little bit of water turns them into a melt in the mouth healthier caramel!!! Add nut butter and you’re packing in protein and healthy fats (which we need in small amounts!) Smoother them in dark chocolate and you’re reaping all those beautiful cocoa benefits!! The great thing is even though they are so delicious, they are very filling so you won’t scoff them down as you might do with a normal pack of Rolo’s.Plus they are SOOO simples to make!

Ingredients

(Makes 12 ‘Rawlos’) • 60g Dates in 1-2 tablespoons water • 140g Almond butter (or a nut/seed butter of your choice!) • 50g Dark chocolate (AT least 70% cocoa)

Method 1. Having soaked the dates in a small amount of water overnight, mash them up. If they don’t mash up easily, heat them gently in the microwave/hob. 2.Add the nut/seed butter to the mashed dates and mix well. 3. Roll into balls and freeze for 1 hour.

4.Melt dark chocolate. Coat the balls in the dark chocolate and freeze for 20minutes. See how long they can last melting in your mouth without you gobbling up their gooey centre and crisp chocolate shell!!!!

Peninsula Pacers have planned a few walks for the Springtime so hope the weather will be kind to us all! So get out your walking shoes & let’s get going! Skerries: On Thurs 17th Feb we hope to go on a medium walk in Skerries. We can go on the train, walk down to the town via the mill if open, go on a beach walk around by Red Island

and coffee! Returning by train to Donabate. All weather permitting. Boyne: On Thurs 10th March we hope to do some of the Boyne Rampart Canal Walk. It is a flat walk with some lovely attractions on the way and a view of the Boyne for the entire length. They will require cars but we can hopefully pool by then! All weather permitting.The April

walk to be decided but will probably be before the Easter Holidays and maybe the Bray to Greystones Coastal Walk - if it is reopened. New Director for Housing and Community Development announced Fingal County Council has announced that Robert Burns has taken up the role of Director for Housing and Community Development from 24 January. Robert joins the council’s executive team at a time when Fingal has committed over €390 million to deliver a significant housing programme under the Government’s Housing for All initiative.
