Johnston welcomes defibrillator for Portrane

Corina Johnston, Labour Party Local Area Representative has welcomed the installation of a much needed defibrillator in Portrane.Johnston said; “I am very pleased that a defibrillator has now been installed in Portrane especially as it can save the life of a person who has gone into Cardiac Arrest. The need for a defibrillator and signage in the area was first raised with me by a resident in Portrane during the first Covid lockdown in 2020. I discussed this locally and it was decided to go ahead and provide one. “Johnston added; “Liam Grogan, the owner of Grogan’s supermarket immediately agreed to locate the defibrillator within the shop, and for a notice to be erected on the outer wall. A local printer offered to do the design and print work the result of which is now on display in Grogan’s, The Brook and Pipers Take Away. “Johnston continued; “An outdoor display and information session on CPR and on the operation of a defibrillator took place on the Portrane Green. This was attended by a number of local people who were very impressed with the presentation. It was agreed that further sessions would be arranged in the coming months and the public will be invited.”Johnston said; “A huge debt of gratitude is due to the resident who initially raised this issue with me and to the Grogan family who have provided the premises . Also to Gerry Neville, our paramedic who presented the course, Jack Caverly, our printer ,Tom Kennedy the engineer for the occasion and to Sean Ryan. Without them, the defibrillator would not have been installed at least at this moment in time.”Johnston concluded; “In view of the potential benefit of a defibrillator where large numbers of people gather I firmly believe that all public houses, supermarkets ,our beaches and all sports facilities should be required to install one on their premises. Major Planning application Corballis, Donabate

Cllr Adrian Henchy has raised concerns over a proposed new development in Corbalis , Donabate. He said, “In recent days I received notification from Fingal County Council of a planned major Strategic housing development(SHD) for Corballis Donabate. While I fully recognise there is a housing crisis with a critical shortage of both homes to buy and rental properties it is still critically important that all new planning applications are underpinned by equal investment in both physical and social infrastructure. Donabate is already under going significant change and development with a number of planning applications currently been completed and others about to start so time needs to be given to allow these new homes fully integrate into the community.I make no apologies from the outset in declaring if this new application is in anyway both developer led planning and not in compliance with the local area plan, I will be using my voice within Fingal County Council on behalf of my local community Donabate Portrane to request that this particular application goes back to the drawing board.I will be closely studying and examining all the documentation to

do with this application in the coming weeks to ensure it is in full compliance with both the Donabate Local Area Plan and the Fingal County Development plan and will be making representation to both Fingal County Council and An Bord Pleanala on behalf of my local community Donabate Portrane. I would urge as many local community groups and residents to carefully examine the plans which can found at www.corballiseastshd.ie. (NB: not accessible through this media) From my primarily review of these plans, I am very concerned at the scale of the proposed development, as it is, the largest planning application that has ever been submitted for Donabate. Leithinis Classes Recommencing in September/October

A Leithinis session prior to the Covid lockdown Leithinis Donabate Portrane CCÉ will recommence classes for adults and children in traditional Irish music in late September or early October. Along with our classes in banjo, bodhrán, button accordion, fiddle, flute and tin whistle, we hope to also offer classes in concertina. and eggs from her hens Honey and Ginger. Neighbours, classmates, and tourists all supported the shop. All her

A few practical tips: Carefully study 3 months’ bank statements. Make sure that you can account for every single trans-action. On a regular basis, I encounter people who have been paying for things that they should not be, direct debits they forgot to cancel.Make a detailed list for grocery shopping (and don’t shop while hungry). This leads to only buying what you actually need, a lower bill at the till and less throwing out of food gone off. Compare before you shop for larger items. Just because one store has a fridge you want reduced from €950 to €850 in their “Sale”, does not mean another store nearby that does not currently have a sale on, is not selling the same one for €799. Compare utility providers. Whether it’s electricity, gas, broadband, mobile phone service or similar, there can be substantial savings to be had by switching to better deals. Check when car/house insurance renew-als arrive. Don’t automatically accept a renewal premium without checking around. A few phone calls could save

you hundreds of euro.Review premiums on life cover/mortgage protection/serious illness cover. Especially if you arranged it directly with a bank or insurance company that could not compare. In over 20 years of helping people with their finances, I have never seen anyone NOT make savings by doing the above. On a sunny Thursday in August over twenty people from the Peninsula Pacers met at the car park beside the Brook Pub and went on two different walks. One a Historical Ramble of the Burrow hosted by Peader Bates our local historian, The other was a Coastal Loop through Portrane Hospital out to the beach, then along the Cliff Walk on to the Portrane Beach and around by Rogerstown Estuary up Marsh Lane. Both groups met back at the Brook Pub - for cakes & coffee or pizza & pints. A really enjoyable day was had by all. Please see the photos of the walks recently forwarded from Carolyn of the Historical Ramble Short Walk Group with Peader Bates local historian; who told local stories of the Burrow area.The group enjoyed refreshments at The Brook, in the new outdoor space. It is hoped to continue with longer & shorter walks maybe one a month. Boules for Newbridge Park- On the Way! Fingal County Council are soon to begin work on the Boules Court beside the Croquet Lawn. Initially we understood this perfect location may not be possible but in the end it has come good! These two activities Boules & Croquet are complimentary and will form a little hub of activity beside Newbridge House. Hopefully, along with some local groups having access, it will be possible to do casual advance booking of both of these facilities, like other parks, for many people both young and old to enjoy as amenities. Fingal Parks Department and in particular, Therese Casey & Lourda Darcy are to be complimented for the work they have done on this project. We all eagerly await the completion of the facility!

Although we had seen little of Kiernan over the past eighteen months due to his underlying health condition and the risk of Covid-19, a couple of members had kept contact with him by phone. shape and will be finished soon. We’ve had a very successful year, with a bumper crop of potatoes, tomatoes and onions, as members learn more about the art and science of horticulture. Visit to the Boyne Interpretative Centre and Trim/Trim Castle

The group who travelled by the ‘local-link’ Flexibus service on 12th August

10 members travelled on the 12th August to visit these centres. While sun was on the forecast, the rain happened too – but reports from all agree it did not dampen their day out. Being able to eat inside was really quite a novelty too! The Interpretative Centre has lots of lovely walks and a café and is well worth the day out – but do book ahead online. It is free but they need to know numbers for each self-guided tour. Flexibus operates in the Navan, Louth and Fingal areas and has been offering free trips to older members from these communities during the summer.As AAfA members who registered in July know, all

classes so far are fully booked. The only problem is that we have not received the go-ahead from government for August and we hope that by the time you are reading this, we will have started again. If not, we will wonder what the vaccination bonus really is for us… We still owe money to some… we still have quite a few members who were with us in 2020 when we had to shut down classes. Many members are carrying a small credit balance with us and we would encourage you to make contact and renew your membership card by just using

Lambay Sports member representing Ireland in Europe !

Our first ever summer camp for children took placer this summer. We hoped to give our young LSA members and other members of the community an opportunity to experience a range of athletics disciplines without having to travel outside the Donabate/Portrane peninsula. It was fitting that Ballymastone GAA Grounds was the venue for the first two days of the camp, where St Pat’s GAA club generously gave us their pitches, storage and clubhouse. Ballymastone could be called the spiritual home of Donabate, since this was the location of the first Community Games that led to the formation of the club in 2011. We made full use of all the space in Ballymastone with six different activity stations. Children and teenagers from age 6 up tried out Throws: (Shot put, Turbo Javelin and Discus); Jumps: (High Jump and Long Jump) Sprints and Middle Distance, as well as fun games, yoga, obstacle course and tug of war. We are hugely grateful to our 30+ volunteer coaches and helpers who gave their time and 14

shared their experience, energy and enthusiasm with our 85 participants. Apart from being great fun, this was also a wonderful opportunity for many of our club members to meet for the first time.As we have gradually returned to competition, LSA members from our juvenile and adult sections have had great success competing. Anna Gavigan was selected to represent Ireland at the under 18 International Team Match in Franconville Paris. Anna secured a 2nd Place finish in Discus with a new PB of 43.33m. Anna and her coach Gerry Ronan continue to go from strength to strength; shortly after her international appearance, Anna went on to become the National Champion Discus U18.September will see a return to training for all our members. Our Masters Track and Field team take on the National Masters Championship on September 5th in Tullamore. Super Cereal Bars “Back to work, school or college after the Summer break may mean back to routine but it doesn’t have to mean back to bad habits! Autumn is the season for change and what better way to start the new school year than on a healthy note. A lot of cereal bars in shops are loaded with sugar which give an instant energy high but this is rapidly followed by an energy crash and cravings for more sweet foods. These cereal bars below are tasty but very satisfying and filling. Not to mention they are so simple to make and contain only 5 ingredients which are very commonplace in many homes. 16

Ingredients

Makes 15 bars • 500g muesli (No added sugar) • 200mls milk • 100g nut butter (Peanut/almond/ cashew etc.) • 4 tablespoons honey • 150g dark chocolate to coat on top

Method 1. Make a well in the centre of the muesli in a mixing bowl. Add the milk and using a knife make an ‘X’ in the mixture, mixing the milk into the muesli. 2. Add the honey and nut butter and combine together. 3. Spread onto a baking tray with grease proof paper and freeze for 4

hours or overnight. 4. Just before removing from the freezer, melt the dark chocolate and then spread it on top of the mixture. 5. Place the mixture back in the freezer for another hour. Make sure it is quite solid. Then cut it up and gobble up! Try store some in a lunchbox in the freezer so that they last the week!! ‘Go hard or go home’ mentality is outdated

By Ciaran Russell You will have heard this phrase ‘Go Hard or Go Home’ before but maybe this mentality is hindering your progress. How often you rest will directly impact on how you adapt to the training stimulus. By training too hard for a long period of time you run the risk of overtraining. This doesn’t have to mean a complete break from your exercise programme; it can be lighter sessions or different exercise than what you had been doing for the previous weeks. The reason rest is an overlooked part of training is because when you stress the

body for a number of weeks doing the same or very similar exercises or activity your nervous system won’t have a chance to play catch up and you will eventually crash. When this happens, you may feel very tired, you might experience some cold or flu symptoms and you may find your mood is off. These are typical signs that you need to take the foot off the gas. When you have a balanced training programme of intense exercise coupled with proper rest your body will have sufficient time to adapt and recover in a way that will positively benefit you and your training goals. A ‘go hard or go home’ or ‘no pain no gain’

mentality is outdated. Too many people go all in at the very beginning of a new fitness programme in order to race to the end to see the amazing results only to give up a few weeks later. But if you accept that fitness will be a lifetime endeavor you can plan your goals better and will enjoy your training more.
