With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed and promises of more to come we at Locals Magazine are like you, hoping we are beginning to see a new era for us all. Summer may be here but even though it seems we may be able to mix more and enjoy it, we still have to be very careful . We must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We must also protect our mental and physical health as well and let the sunshine into our lives once again. This should also mean supporting those who have supported us over the past 15 months. This means shopping locally supporting our local businesses and securing local employment. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine and love promoting local community based sporting and voluntary organisations. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and more recently once again in print during this crisis. The days and months ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers and business owners and the survival of those of us who have health problems and those children who have their whole lives ahead of them.We may be coming out of lockdown but that does not mean being over exuberant. We must all continue to grasp this new era cautiously and continue to pull together while not forgetting the consequences if we do not. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to return to what we knew to be normality two years ago. To enjoy again all the good things with our loved ones, families and friends which we have missed. Things can only get better if we are all careful. This also means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Let us all stay safe, obey the regulations and enjoy meeting up with those we care about once again. So, enjoy the sunshine, enjoy the Summer and remember please shop local! The Locals Team

a team of volunteers who erect a fence and patrol the beach to protect the little ternsThe little terns lay their eggs in the sand and are vulnerable to predators – both animal and human – while they are sitting on their eggs waiting for them to hatch.There is great rejoicing when the babies are ready to fly back to Africa. Inheritance money -Does the tax man have to take it? By Dave Kavanagh In 2019 in Ireland, there was €455 million collected in Capital Acquisition Tax. This covers both inheritance tax and gift tax. It also includes estates that may have been taxed in previous generations. For example, if someone left an estate worth €2,000,000 to an only daughter, she would (in the current tax year) have a tax bill of almost €550,000. After she pays the bill and puts what’s left in the bank, any interest is taxed (DIRT). Guess what happens when she passes and leaves her estate behind? It’s taxed again! Spouses can leave any amount to each other tax free. After that, the three thresholds are, a) Children - €335,000, b) Other close relatives €32,500 and c) All others (including cohabiting partners) - €16,250. Everything received above these is taxed at 33%.So, is there any way to avoid it? There are two main actions that can either reduce or eradicate such a tax bill. The first is to take the time to plan when making a will. Let’s say a value of €750,000 was being left to 2 adult children. (Not a big estate if you combine a house, savings and a life policy). This would create a tax bill of over €25,000. Instead, if €670,000 of it was left to the 2 children and the balance between a few grandchildren, there is no tax bill. The second thing that can be done is for the person leaving the estate to take out a Section 72 plan. This is a

type of life policy that is allowed to pay any tax liability without adding to the value of the estate. It becomes particularly important for anybody that does not have children to plan things out, as even other relatives can only receive €32,500 before any balance is taxed. Make the time to plan.

Johnston welcomes Garda patrols on Donabate peninsula

A Labour Party delegation consisting of Duncan Smith TD, Cllr James Humphreys and Corina Johnston Area Representative met with senior officials of the Gardai including Assistant Garda Commissioner Anne Marie Cagney, Superintendents Brian Woods and Ronan Barry to discuss the need for additional Garda resources on the peninsula. Corina Johnston said;“in their response the Garda informed us of their intention to provide two additional Gardai for foot patrol duties on the Donabate peninsula on each weekend commencing on Friday 30th April. This forms part of their good weather initiative which will continue during the summer period. “Johnston continued; “ While I welcome the much needed additional resources for Donabate, I stressed the need for community Gardai to be assigned to Donabate on a permanent basis given the projected growth in the population.”Johnston continued; “ Duncan Smith TD and I have been advocating for the introduction of the See Something Say Something Garda text initiative on the peninsula. Superintendent Barry gave his continued support to the introduction of this text alert initiative which has proved successful in a pilot scheme in Swords. The extension of this scheme will be decided in conjunction with Fingal County Council and the Chamber of Commerce in the near future.“ Johnston added; “the following issues were raised by our delegation:- the need for a community based policing forum- the need for a domestic abuse officer for the Swords and Donabate district- an online post primary school programme initiative in advance of the school summer recess.The Gardai committed to giving serious consideration to these proposals.”Johnston concluded;”Duncan Smith TD and I also raised the need for a permanent Garda station on the peninsula.We suggested that in the event of the Progressive Credit Union proceeding with their intention to sell the Credit Union building, as seems likely from responses received to date, that this could well be an ideal location for a Garda station. In their response the Gardai said that while they have no objection in principle to a Garda Station on the peninsula, this however would be a political decision“

On Monday 10th May, the croquet players were all ready to celebrate the start of the 2021 season using their new equipment. This was purchased, at the end of last summer, using a grant from Fingal County Council Community, Culture and Sports Division. Prior to this we had a loan from Croquet Ireland, and we thank them very much for that. Thanks too to some of the Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed, Jim O’Donohoe, Gerry Kirwan and Oliver McDonald, who volunteered to put together the trolleys that arrived in kit form. (see photos). The existing AAfA members who play croquet regularly were really pleased to see this arrival. At the time of writing, we have more members wishing to join and we will be at trying to extend our playing time, or additional time, to try to accommodate this. We will continue to monitor the changes in opening-up from Covid and how it might impact on our activities. Keep checking on our weekly emails to see what else may be happening from time to time. All we need now is a summer of glorious weather. 8

Henchy Welcomes Skate Park confirmation by the Council

Councillor Adrian Henchy has welcomed news of a Skate park for the area. He said I was very pleased at a recent area committee meeting to receive confirmation that as part of the Ballymastone Sporting and recreational campus, Fingal County Council have agreed to install a skate park as part of this project. This has been one of my key objectives since my election in 2014 from my visits to our local primary schools and engagement with students of our local secondary school as well as many youth organisations and indeed local residents calling for the installation of a skate park local to Donabate given the nearest one is currently in Swords. The first step was getting this stitched in as a local objective for Donabate within the Fingal Development Plan and its very positive to now see Fingal County Council follow through on its commitment. Donabate is a growing community with a very young population and its critically important that we provide a wide range of facilities and amenities to appeal to as many young people as possible. I am also very pleased to see this amenity co- existing with the proposed eight lane Olympic standard athletics facility and the full size flood lite all weather facilities to accommodate Gaelic Games and Soccer.

Men’s Shed to the rescue of AAfA

Active Age for All recently acquired two sets of croquet equipment and asked Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed to assist by assembling the two flat-packed trolleys included with the sets. So, with engineering know-how and carpentry skills, not to mention a code-cracker’s ability to decipher the unintelligible assembly directions, a few of our members proved themselves up to the task. We managed to produce two fully functioning trolleys in time for Active Age for All’s socially distanced return to croquet. With the easing of Covid-19 restrictions to permit outdoor gatherings of 15, the Men’s Shed has arranged a few outdoor get-togethers over the coming weeks. Work at our allotments also continues. Build your own home gym after lockdown by Siobhán O’Neill White Over lockdown many of us have gained a few extra lbs but hooray, summer is coming, restrictions are easing and it’s time to get back into shape - without spending a fortune on fancy food plans & gym memberships! We have been working on building a gym space at home, in what was a musty garage full of discarded paint tins and broken bikes! We started with 2 coats of heavy duty paint and then laid a floor which is specially designed for gyms. All we needed was 18 gym mats from blackswan.ie. No glue, no hard work just set them down, give them a soapy mopping and hey presto, floor was done! They are heavy and sturdy and do not curl at the edges.We’ve been picking up gym equipment from Fittrhome.ie. They have everything from dumbells to power racks and also offer a bespoke gym design service. I’m skipping & using small dumbells in the garage, while my have son is lifting bigger weights and saving up for a quarter rack. It’s given him great focus! Finally, for a boost of energy, we’ve been taking a daily supplement ‘Immune Phyx’ from award winning Irish company, Phytaphix.ie Everyone in our family is taking it - its an all rounder product, good for everyone! Long term fitness results aren’t instantly gratifying By Ciaran Russell Ever since the internet became a thing people have been conditioned to *click* and receive. Instant gratification is part of our lives more so now than ever. It can be very gratifying to be able to have what you want, whenever you want for most things in life. People now can accomplish a huge list of things on their phone, all without getting off the sofa.This is now affecting people’s health and fitness causing a massive problem when it comes to diets and losing weight. With instant gratification becoming more prevalent people can look to gain quick results or take some shortcuts to achieving what they believe might be success. These shortcuts might look like juice cleanses, meal replacement shakes or supplements claiming to boost fat loss in short periods of time. When it comes to diet and exercise, there are no instant results.In order to achieve any weight loss or fitness goals you have to have a plan, put in some hard work and effort over a long period of time. Sometimes you can be working for weeks and not see results but then decide to give up. You get discouraged and enter into a vicious cycle of try to lose weight, fail, try something more extreme and so on.Be careful when you see a product or service promising a result in a short period of time. to do the basics consistently. Train 3-4 times a week. Make sure the majority of your meals are properly portioned. Eat lots of fruit & vegetables. Eat enough protein. Get into training and celebrate with Lambay Sports

LSA (Lambay Sports & Athletics), is an

athletic club in North County Dublin with juvenile and adult members, founded in

2011.This is our first club race and we would love if you could join us in our celebrations.

Unfortunately due to restrictions this year we can only be with you in spirit and hope from

next year to continue with an annual road race around the beautiful coastline of Donabate and Portrane.For now we are celebrating

everything 10 with a 10k and 10 mile. We’ve

also added a 5k and juvenile races so everyone has a race to suit them. So get the family

out and run, jog, walk or roll your distance

between 12th to 18th July 2021. We will have spot prizes which will be announced over the next couple of weeks too for winning club

teams (it doesn’t have to be an athletic club) and age category. Our nominated charity

is Donabate & Portrane Special Olympics

May brought us at Donabate Portrane Special Olympics Club the best news ever; with an ease in Covid restrictions and thanks to hard work by our safety committee we have returned to ‘live’ sessions on Saturdays.I don’t know who was more excited, our volunteers, the parents or the athletes!Despite the rain, and thanks to the covered yard area in DPETNS, we welcomed our young athletes and parents back in pods of fifteen, and it was a privilege to see the smiles as they saw their friends face to face for the first time in so long.We are all sure they could all tell we adults were smiling under our masks as we marvel at how much they have all grown up over the last 15 months.We thought it might be difficult to run our sessions within the restrictions, but as always our superstars adapted to the challenge and were soon running, hopping, skipping, balancing.Playground games are a great hit; with the children enjoying their turn at being “it” and calling the shots in Red Rover and What’s the time Mister Wolf. While activities were under way in Donabate, one of our parent volunteers, Maedhbh, took on her first marathon to raise funds for Down Syndrome Dublin and our club. Our club followed her progress with some of our families going along to support Maedhbh on her route. We are all very proud and grateful to Maedhbh who raised over €3500. Local Athletics Club, LSA are great supporters of our club and will help us with the launch of our athletics programme as soon as we are able.We are delighted that they have chosen us as their charity partner for their first official event this summer to celebrate their 10th anniversary.Thank you LSA.
