With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 more or less relaxed and life heading towards a pre Covid normality, we at Locals Magazine are like you, hoping we are beginning to see a new era for us all. Christmas may be only next month but even though it seems we may be able to mix more and enjoy it, we still have to be very careful . We must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitisers, wearing masks when appropriate, social distancing and having our Covid Certs in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We must also protect our mental and physical health as well in this pre Christmas season. This should also mean supporting those who have supported us over the past 20 months. This means shopping locally supporting our local businesses and securing local employment. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine and love promoting local community based sporting, charitable and voluntary organisations. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and more recently once again in print during this crisis. In the next six weeks we will be in the throes of Christmastime and Christmas shopping. Those days and the month ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers and business owners and the survival of those of us who have health problems We may be coming out of the restrictions but that does not mean being over exuberant. We must all continue to grasp this new era cautiously and continue to pull together while not forgetting the consequences if we do not. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to return to what we knew to be normality at Christmas two years ago? To enjoy our yuletide again with our loved ones, families and friends. Returning to normal also means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Let us not take anything for granted all stay safe, obey the regulations and enjoy meeting up with those we care about once again. Pedestrian access to Newbridge Demesne must be prioritised Corina Johnston, Labour Party Local Area Representative has called on Fingal County Council to prioritise the opening of the proposed pedestrian access to Newbridge Demesne off the Hearse Road adjacent to the Semple Woods Estate. Johnston said; “ a temporary entrance into Newbridge Demesne opposite Semple Woods on the Hearse Road was closed in July 2020. Since then an increasing number of residents now living in the vicinity of the Hearse Road have to walk along a narrow and dangerous footpath to access the Demesne. Hence the urgency for the new access.” Johnston continued; “The provision of this access is an objective in the Local Area Plan for Donabate and a condition in the planning permission for Semple Woods.The planning permission for the Semple Woods stipulates that prior to the 201st house being sold and occupied in the estate a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Dublin - Belfast railway line connecting the development to Donabate village via Smyths pub and a link to Newbridge Demesne on the Hearse Road via the toucan crossing shall be provided and operational.“Johnston said; “In response to our ongoing representations Fingal County Council confirmed earlier this year that the proposed entrance to the Demesne could not be opened until a safe access and crossing was provided as the sight lines along this stretch of the road were not sufficient to allow for safe crossing. Improvement works including the provision of a high level traffic light at the new toucan crossing on the Hearse Road were undertaken. A Road Safety Audit has also been undertaken, the results of which are still awaited.“ Johnston concluded; “Fingal County Council needs to publish the results of the Road Safety Audit so that any issues raised in the report can be addressed to enable the opening of the new entrance to proceed. Apart from meeting the requirements of the planning permission and objectives of the Local Area Plan the access will improve the health and safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists accessing Newbridge Demesne from the Hearse Road. Therefore it must be prioritised.”

Henchy welcomes update on DonabateMalahide “ Broadmeadow” Greenway Cllr Adrian Henchy has welcomed a report on the current status of the Donabate Malahide ‘Broadmeadow’ Greenway. The Fianna Fail Councillor said the report stated , “A significant amount of work has been ongoing on this project since the granting of planning permission:That work included: A full topographical survey of the route has been completed, a ground investigation contract has been completed along the railway causeway between Bissets Strand, Malahide and Kilcrea, Donabate and further elements of the ground investigation, which were delayed initially by Covid 19 is scheduled to mobilise to site in October. There has also been an Ecology walkover survey of the site has been completed. An Advance works contract for site clearance and fencing of the CPO lands is scheduled for October. FCC property, valuation and engineering team are engaging with landowners affected by the CPO. Application for a foreshore license and lease from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government. This process usually takes at least 12 months.Draft detailed drawings have been submitted to the Council by the appointed consultants RPS

for the route from Kilcrea to Newbridge House, Donabate. Draft detailed design drawings for the route from Malahide Demense to Bissets strand are expected shortly. Irish Rail have indicated that the detailed design of the main estuary bridge should be complete by the end of October. A significant amount of time has been spent by the project team on the examination of the causeway, in particular the northern causeway where significant challenges remain in achieving the required greenway width. Noting all of the above, there remain significant risk items in particular around the foreshore consent process and resolving the northern causeway issue. Notwithstanding that, the current timeline is: Ground investigation contracts Q2 2022, 4 months duration, Landward works commencing Q1 2023, 6 months duration, Estuary bridge and causeway construction 2023-2024 (two years duration,allowing for ABP conditions with respect to works restrictions i.e. works only permitted during summer months).” Overall Cllr Henchy said he welcomes the progress so far and looks forward to the project continuing to be enhanced in the near future.

Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed Extending its Activities

As we tentatively get back to normal, Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed is extending our range of activities. Along with our regular Thursday morning get-togethers at the Scouts’ Den on Portrane Road, a group of shedders meet on Tuesday mornings for croquet at Newbridge House, where I’m told “no quarter is given” in highly competitive matches. On the other hand,

the work at our plots at Turvey Allotments is a model of cooperation, where several members are keeping things going over the winter months using our greenhouse funded by Fingal Camber Community Fund and materials grant-aided by the Department of Rural and Community Development through the Community Enhancement Programme operated by Fingal

Local Community Development Committee. In the new year, we hope to start our weekly exercise classes again and resume our occasional outings to places of interest. Leithinis Donabate Portrane CCE Gig in the Gazebo

Leithinis Donabate Portrane CCE held a socially distanced Gig in the Gazebo session in the grounds of the Parish Hall in early October. It gave our members a chance to practice some tunes together before our new term of classes resumed and allowed some local residents to see what Comhaltas is all about. It was well attended and a great afternoon was had by all.We were granted €1,000 towards the cost of a laptop and 24

folding chairs from the Community Enhancenent Programme 2021 funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and operated by Fingal County Council’s Local Community Development Committee. We made great use of the chairs and the Gazebo (which was bought from a grant from Fingal County Council earlier in the year) at the Gig

in the Gazebo session.Thanks again to Fingal County Council for their support over the last 2 years. Our classes in Tin whistle, Flute, Bodhran, Fiddle, Accordion and Concertina have resumed. As you are aware Donabate Parish Hall has recently been undergoing repair & refurbishment. The electrics have been upgraded thanks again to grant aid received from The Department of Rural & Community Development operated by FCC Local Community Development Committee. The work was done by Karl Harte and his team.The Parish Hall has a long history 8

of local businesses being involved in refurbishment work. October saw a welcome return to activities for our athletes and volunteers, as well as the launch of our athletics club! 15 athletes have graduated from our Young Athletes’ Programme to the athletics club (and we have a waiting list already!) under the expert tutelage of Maria and Dara Carr from Lambay Sports and Athletics.We were delighted to be given a CovID Emergency Funding grant by Fingal County Council, which we put to use in purchasing a personalised bag of sports equipment for every athlete in our Contact us:communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

club; due to CovID safety protocols our use of equipment in sessions was limited so providing each athlete with their own equipment is a big help, thank you Fingal County Council. We are also grateful to Decathlon Ireland for their discount to make our fund go even further, and to our volunteers for sourcing and storing equipment, and assembling the packs. Having their own equipment also allows our athletes to practice their skills at home; we’ve been enjoying

Adult LSA Runners in the Belfast Marathon for the first time Someone once said, “A marathon seems like a small thing when we consider the journeysthat others have to make” It’s sometimes hard to remember that it’s only 10 years since LSA was established as a Juvenile athletics club, and even more surprising to think that it’s only two years since our adults group was formed. For this reason the River Rock Belfast City Marathon on 3rd October was a big day for LSA as it marked the first real life marathon for our adult members. Fifteen of our marathoners were running individually and had set their own personal goals. Another fifteen were running as part of our three relay teams. The benefit of being part of a club was evident with training groups, company for long runs, sharing of tips and the invaluable logistical and emotional support on the day. The words of our athletes sum up the experience…..“It was my 8th marathon overall, but my first ‘real’ marathon as a member of a club, and what a difference that made!! It was like a local race, with so many familiar faces running in it and supporting us .” PB “Last year’s virtual Dublin marathon was without all the good stuff that should come with it. The other runners beside you, the crowd, the cheers, finally running through the finish line!” SB “The support from LSA was phenomenal. During the hills and headwinds of the second half of the run it made all the difference, as the words of encouragement gave the motivation to keep pushing for the line. What a great club!” PMcC “First non-virtual marathon 3hr 11mins what an incredible day with a fabulous club and friends. Is time running out for your insurance cover? By Dave Kavanagh When people take out cover, such as life cover or serious illness cover, it is usually for a specific term, such as 10, 20 or 30 years. When these terms expire, the cover usually ends. People can ap-ply for new cover but their health at that time may prevent them from getting cover again or could include a premium rating. This is why having a conversion option is an extremely valuable bene-fit. It allows the person to extend their cover without having to provide any new medical details, so they are guaranteed to be accepted for cover (assuming they were accepted at ordinary rates when they first applied). It’s hard to know what your requirements will be in 10 years, never mind 20 or 30 years, so if you are taking out cover for the first time, it is important to make sure that you will have the flexibility in the future should you require it. For anyone that has cover in place, do you know exactly when it is due to expire? Do you know if it has a conversion option? It is far wiser to check and make sure you know these details now, rather than leave it until it is too late. If your health has deteriorated since you originally took out cover and you do have a conversion op-tion, it may be well worth looking at converting it now, as cover is more expensive the older you are, so you can lock in a lower premium and future proof yourself by getting the

best value for your cover. In many cases, a lower level of cover may be sufficient as the financial loss that would have occurred 20 years ago may be reduced, for example, children may have grown up and moved out. Another aspect to consider, is if you were a smoker when you first took out cover. If you have been a non-smoker for over 12 months, you may be entitled to substantially reduced premiums.

DonabateCommunity College News Donabate Community College celebrate Leaving Certificate Success

By Lia Bracken, Hazel McGoey and Ava Pender, TY Journalism Recently, Donabate CC welcomed back students who had recently completed Leaving Certificate 2021. Sixteen students were presented with an award for outstanding results, each of whom received in excess of 500 points. Despite the struggles associated with the pandemic during their senior academic years, students worked diligently and with determination to achieve their potential. In conversation with our award recipients, their advice for the upcoming Leaving Certificate Class was “To study from Day One.” While the areas of study students are now pursuing were varied across the Sciences, Arts, Music, Business, Accounting, Philosophy, Medical Science, Analytical Science and across different college campuses, everyone agreed that 12

effort from day one drastically improves your chances of succeeding in what you are passionate about. Thomas Crean, Sam Dolan, and Sean Collins advised students to have a clear head and know what path you want to go down before beginning preparations for the exams. They said having a clear understanding of what you want to do helps focus on your studies and proves easier overall. Many students applied for the accredited grades while also sitting the exams last June. Although they noted that sometimes it was stressful, they believed that this was the best decision given the circumstances. Ciara Kavanagh, Cara Spagnoletti and Ali Kavanagh remarked on the importance of doing your homework consistently. The rise in points this year gave rise to some students reevaluating their next step. Some are taking gap years while others are discovering new paths and interests. Eoin

Moran, Jack Pender and Matthew Crowe stated the importance of choosing a career that you are really interested in and being aware of not letting financial reward cloud your judgement. Eoin noted that there might not be lots of career options after his degree in philosophy, but he really loved doing it.Congratulations to the following students who received presentations marking their incredible Leaving Certificate results: Leah Brogan, Sean Collins, Thomas Crean, Matthew Crowe, Niamh Cullen, Sam Dolan, Alanna France, Ciara Kavanagh, Ali Kavanagh, Eoin Moran, Senan O’Riordan, Jack Pender, Oisín Power, Liam Shorthall, Cara Spagnoletti, and Jennifer Thompson.Most started orientation or classes last week and we wish them, and all of the Class of 2021, the very best of luck in their studies and future careers. We were fortunate to welcome Godfred and David Day to DCC recently for a full day workshop for TY students.David Day is the founder of Jamba Jamba Jambe. He has studied African world drumming for over 20 years in Ireland and with teachers around Europe, the US, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Ghana and West Africa. providing drumming workshops and Drum circle events such as festivals and schools, corporate and community groups.Drumming circles allows groups to play traditional songs and it creates opportunities for people to experiment with different instruments. It was invented in the 12th century by the Mandinke tribe which is now in Mali in West Africa. It has been played by West Africans for generations and it is part of ritualistic life in countries in Africa. Each TY group got to experience both traditional African dance and drumming. The day started meeting Godfred and Dave. They explained the activities and we

got started on the drumming. We learned about the stories of the jembe (the drums), we learned new rhythms and rhymes to use whilst we hit the drum. It was difficult to stay in time, but it was a lot of fun! We got to take part in some Traditional African dancing with Godfred. The dancing involved a series of simple repetitive movements, however the group couldn’t miss a step and had to keep time. If a step was missed it would look out of order and we would have to start from scratch! This was a lot of fun! Peninsula Pacers ‘Find the Follies walk’ St Annes Park, Clontarf

A Folly is defined as a costly ornamental building with no practical purpose. They can be found all over the country on the lands of the grand old estates, their function usually being decorative whimsy on the part of the owner but sometimes they served as a memorial of sorts. St Annes Park, once the property of the Guinness family, is reputed to have at least 10 follies in the grounds. On a sunny Thursday morning 7 stalwart searchers set off from Olives Room cafe to see how many we could find.The park is bisected by the small Nanikin river which feeds an artificial duck pond and is bordered by a very pleasant walk. In addition to the follies there is a walled garden with a clock tower, an arboretum,

a rose garden and many sports grounds. All of these features are accessed by lovely walks around the park.Aside from the folly search we visited the Peace Tree just outside the park on the Clontarf Road. This, we all agreed, is a stunning piece of art depicting a plethora of wildlife, both land and marine, native to Ireland. After a 4km exploratory ramble we returned to Olives Room cafe for lunch and a tally of follies ( photographic evidence was required !) We were pleased to find that we had located 9 of them, including Annie Lee Tower Bridge, the Temple of Isis by the duck pond, a Roman observation tower and a Herculean Temple. All of the pacers who took part in the walk agreed that this matter requires

further investigation !

Peninsula Pacers walk The Bull Island Whilst one of our recent monthly walks one group did a short walk and history tour of St Anne’s Park, the other group did a 10km walk through the park and on to a loop of The Bull Island. It was a great day with fantastic views. There are benches along the beach to rest on and a fantastic outdoor cafe -Happy Out- with a toilet nearby for 30cent! where we had lunch. We intend venturing south side in November doing a flat coastal walk from Dunlaoighre to Dalkey.

AAfA supports Positive Ageing – reconnecting

During October we supported Positive Ageing Week where the theme was reconnecting. While we do not have all our classes up and running due to some continued restrictions, we have about two thirds back and it is a wonderful feeling to have some structure and social interaction again in our week. On the Wednesday of Positive Ageing week, we met up in the Community Centre and had lunch supplied by TRIANGLE who are due to open in the Centre in November. If the fare at the lunch was anything to go by, we will be very happy to see Triangle open. The sandwiches were delicious. We do miss the opportunity to have a coffee or snack after our classes. The Wednesday afternoon gathering around 3 p.m. at the Community Centre is about having a place where we can just connect. Perhaps your class has not retuned yet? Meet on the Wednesday for a chat. Feeling a bit isolated? Meet on the Wednesday for a chat. Just show up and say ‘hello’. If there is one thing we may have learned during the pandemic restrictions, it is to get out and take all the opportunities we can! Curries are a great dish for cooking in a batch and leaving it to simmer to develop the flavours of the spices. 1 large spanish onion, cut into chunks 3 Garlic cloves, crushed/chopped finely 1 Red pepper, cut into chunks 1 Yellow pepper, cut into chunks 2 whole Fresh red chillis, diced 100g Spinach leaves 200g Natural flavour greek yogurt 1 tin chopped tomatoes 4 tablespoons curry powder 400mls water

Method 1. Prepare and wash the vegetables. Place aside. 2. Prepare and chop the chicken. 3. Heat a non stick pan on a medium heat. If not using a non-stick pan then heat 4 teaspoons of oil in a high sided pan. 4. Add the onion, garlic and fresh chilies and cook on a medium-high

heat. 5. Add the chicken and curry powder. Allow the chicken to cook thoroughly and absorb the flavours from the curry powder. 6.Add the peppers, tin of chopped tomatoes and 400mls hot water. Stir to mix. 7. Simmer for 1 hour until the liquid reduces. In the mean time the condiment such as rice could be cooked as per instructions on the product label. 9.Finally, stir in the spinach leaves and yogurt. Serve and enjoy. Donabate Quilters returned to their quilting meet ups In September.Everyone was delighted to be back and looking forward to working on their quilts. Some were looking for help with a particular pattern and others were already setting out to work on their Christmas projects.That is

not to say that they were idle during the long restriction on classes. As you can see from the photographs below members were very busy… making baby quilts, quilts for friends that had helped, making memory pieces of a parent who had died, to give to their family and generally
