In the past 12 months we have come through a lot as a county and as a people. We have come through and are going through lockdowns. We have not been allowed to see our family and friends in person and we have been told we must ‘elbow greet’ instead of hug those we love and meet. However all of these restrictions have been imposed in a loving way by our Government to try and keep us safe and healthy. To try and keep our loved ones safe and healthy and to try and safeguard our elderly and our future generations. This Valentine’s Day will be one like no other any of us have ever experienced. However that does not mean that we cannot show love to those who mean the most to us. Unlike any other period on history we have the means to stay in touch and communicate without meeting in person, whether that be through a mobile phone call or Facetime or Zoom or whatever technology we have at hand. The worldwide communications structure is so vast now that we need never feel alone and can send messages of love and support to those we care most about. Valentines is traditionally a time to enjoy with those we love so lets make this one extra special. Lets all pull together, lets all obey the Government rules and continue to flatten the Covid 19 curve again. We should also all shop locally and ensure the local jobs of our neighbours and friends. We all know the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others. Community transfer of the virus seems to be the problem so lets not go back to meeting numbers of people and lets avoid Valentines meet ups for one year. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible. We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together now as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as soon as possible and stay safe and enjoy our lives while being responsible. So please, obey the rules, stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all our families and those we love.

We have made our New Year Resolutions!

Word has it that very few New Year Resolutions were made for January and we can all understand why. With so many uncertainties out there, we just take pleasure in getting successfully through the days. However, as a body, Active Age for All are progressing with plans to try to improve the digital and technology skills of our members. After a survey carried out in January, we are looking at ways to offer Covid-friendly training. As we cannot meet until we are in Level 2, you can appreciate why we need to make this happen. More of our classes will be offered in this format too.The resolution that usually is made, but forgotten early, is improving our fitness. Newbridge has had to close their gates on occasion because of numbers. We have just the solution for a wet day. Just go to our website - activeageforall. com - and follow the link to our own classes in Sit & Get Fit and/or Yoga. There are nine classes of each, and Magda is just so encouraging. You will

not need any special equipment, but you will be very happy you decided to follow these classes. They last for about 45 minutes each. Peninsula Pacers: Congratulations to the Peninsula Pacers. This new independent group started out within AAfA. There is no stopping them - they cannot meet now, but they are out there, one-by-one, stepping out possible routes of all distances and degrees of difficulty for their future walks. Membership news: The good news for all members is that your membership is being pushed out until the end of May. It is obvious that we cannot renew at this time and, as we learned at our AGM last month, we are in the fortunate position to be able to cover our insurance costs (due in April) from existing funds. Hold on to your membership card from 2020 and as shops and services re-open, you should be able to use it again. We have notified all who offer discounts to members that the 2020 card is running until the end of May.

Joint plans for unmarried couples is the wrong way to do it By Dave Kavanagh I often review life cover plans that people have in place and realise that they have been set up wrong. Due to our very dated Capital Acquisition Tax laws, if an unmarried couple have a joint policy, in the event of a claim the survivor could be facing a large tax bill. This is because married couples can give or bequeath any value of assets without there being a tax liability. For a cohabiting couple, they are treated in the “strangers” bracket, which means (in the current tax year) after a threshold of €16,250, any balance is taxed at 33%. So if we take John & Mary as an example, who have a joint life policy with €250,000 life cover, in the event of John passing away, Mary will be paid out the policy proceeds but also now has a tax bill of €77,137.50. Is there any way to be exempt from this tax bill? - The correct advice when commencing cover for an unmarried couple, should be instead of setting up a joint plan, to set up two “life of another” plans. So John takes out a plan on Mary and pays the premiums and Mary takes out a plan on John and pays the premiums for that. When done this way, if the same as above happened and John passed away, Mary is deemed to have paid for the cover herself and so is not liable to pay any tax, meaning she receives the full €250,000 policy proceeds and no tax bill. It’s worth also noting that unmarried couples that buy a house together can face a

similar problem if one of them passes away. The survivor that inherits the deceased’s share of the property may then be liable to pay tax on that portion of the property. There are ways to plan for this and to be exempt. If anyone is in either of these situations, please get in touch for advice.

Mens Shed a place for everyone

Last month Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed applied to Fingal County Council for a second plot at Turvey Allotments, as our first allotment has proven to be so successful with our members providing productive outdoor activity, which is relatively safe in these Covid-restricted times. At present, winter maintenance work is being done by one member at a time, in compliance with Level-5 restrictions, but in less restrictive times members benefitted from working together while proving the often-quoted Men’s Shed motto: “Men don’t talk face to face; they talk shoulder to shoulder.”Also last month, the Men’s Shed took delivery of the components for our upgrading of the Scouts’ Den funded by a grant from Fingal County Council and the Department of Rural and Community

Development. Unfortunately, installation work must await easing of public health restrictions.Apart from tending our allotment one at a time, at present members are limited to weekly online get-togethers by Zoom, but as Professor Luke O’Neill, the eminent Trinity College virologist, assures us at a recent webinar arranged by the Irish Men’s Shed Association, “the cavalry is coming” in the form of a vaccine. Hopefully soon we can all get back to normality and our members can once again enjoy our weekly inperson gatherings, with tea, chat, darts, table tennis and exercise classes, and our other special events and occasionally our trips, like our visit in February 2019, photographed here, to the National Museum in Collins Barracks. Henchy welcomes new footpaths at Portrane Schools Cllr Adrian Henchy has welcomed news of a project to finally address the totally inadequate infrastructure for all road users but especially pedestrians on the approach to Scoil Padhraic Callini and St Patricks Boys National School, Portrane road from both the directions of Donabate and Portrane. He said, ”One of my first motions to Fingal County Council in May 2014, as a newly elected councillor on behalf of the Donabate Portrane Community was to request an assessment and improvement plan.While progress on this matter has been frustratingly very slow, I was very pleased to see final approval for this Part 8 planning application get the unanimous approval of all councillors at a recent meeting of the full council. I am very much aware of so many people over a long number of years who have been campaigning for major safety improvements outside of our 2 long established primary schools in Donabate. The current infrastructural network outside of both schools and a small business centre is totally inadequate given that both schools accommodate up to 800 primary school pupils. While the new pedestrian entrance through

the Rahillon Housing development at the back of both schools has eased the pressure a little, there remains an urgent requirement to improve accessibility and safety at the front of both schools.The scheme which is expected to cost €600,000 approx. will see major footpath improvements from the entrance of Carrs Mill estate to the Hospital back gates, setting back of buildings along the Portrane road near the schools, introduction of raised tables , signalised crossing outside both schools, improved bus layby and a number of new gullies to improve surface water drainage.Once land acquisition has been completed a contractor is expected to be appointed in early 2021,with works expected to finally get underway summer 2021. To achieve best value for public money the contractor will be appointed to carry out both this project and the installation of a continuous footpath on Turvey Avenue which has previously been granted Part 8 approval. These infrastructural improvement works on both the Portrane Road and Turvey Avenue are expected to take a total of eight months to complete.”

Fingal Libraries launch new eServices during lockdown

Homeschooling and online learning can be extremely tricky, especially under the current circumstances. However, Fingal Libraries would like to lend a hand with the launch of two brand new eServices which support literacy and STEAM education.The first of the new additions, Lexia, works on fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, allowing users of all ages to practice the crucial skills that make a successful reader. Well suited to personalised learning, the programme is easy to use, with one facility for primary school pupils, and another for secondary school students and adults. Best of all, it can be accessed at school, at home, or even in the 8

library.Lexia is an online program designed to help improve reading skills. With Lexia, users get to practice and develop the skills that make a successful reader. These include fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Also, they are designed in a way which enables learners to use the program at school, in the library and at home. There are two versions of Lexia available to our members: Lexia Core 5 is suitable for use by primary school pupils, and the Lexia Power Up literacy program is for secondary school students and adults. There are four clubs currently open for membership for ages 6 – 7; 8 – 10; 11-13 and 14+. While the younger age groups will require

parental assistance, the classes are set up to allow the older age groups to work independently at their own pace.Through coding, children can become digitally literate in a new language; one that is becoming increasingly important. Coding fosters creativity and helps the learning process by allowing coders to learn through doing and experimentation.Our online coding clubs with Coding Ireland will provide easily accessible tools for both parents and children who are interested in learning to code. Leithinis DP welcomes new members in 2021

Leithinis Donabate Portrane CCE would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new and existing members who started or resumed traditional Irish music lessons on the 25th of January in Button Accordion, Tin whistle, Banjo, Bodhran and Fiddle. We are also now running classes in Flute for adults and children who are already proficient in Tin Whistle. Due to Covid19 our lessons will be held over Zoom until Government restrictions are lifted.Founded

in 2019, we are Dublin’s newest branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann and are committed to the promotion of traditional Irish music and culture on the Donabate Portrane Peninsula. We have come along way since our first meeting. We secured teaching rooms in the Donabate Portrane Educate Together National School (pre covid) and now have over 50 students of all ages, excellent teachers who teach in a friendly and relaxed manner, a website www.leithinis.

com and an instrument bank. We have held a number of successful fund raising events, have held slow and fast sessions (pre covid) in the Parish hall and Keelings, and we have our very own music book courtesy of Eamonn Galldubh our Music Director. In addition we have received various grants from Fingal County Council which enabled us to buy sanitising equipment as well as a PA system and gazebo for when our face to face classes resume.

Penninsula Pacers and Get Walking Ireland

The Peninsula Pacers had their inaugural short walk on Monday 21st December 2020. It was a very cold rainy day but the intrepid pacers did it anyway!We had great plans for further walks, to walk around the Peninsula & then maybe Howth Head & the city canals. Unfortunately, we must wait until the Covid crisis abaits, but with light at the end of the tunnel we can look forward to good walking.At present, we are assessing all the current and possible walks in our area.It has always been the intention to be able to have a number of good long walks all around our beautiful peninsula. It

has become increasingly important to have accessible walks as more & more people are taking up the activity. There should be something for all abilities, the footpath walkers, the park preambles, the welly walkers, the hikers etc!. We are now live on the Get Walking Ireland Website so please check it out. Emergency coastal defence works underway in Portrane Fingal County Council is carrying out emergency works in Portrane including the relocation of Seabees at Burrow beach, following on from recent rock armour works completed at Quay Road.The works are required following the recent removal and relocation of the seabees.During 2018 and 2019 and as an interim measure, 1km of Seabeeâ€™ concrete units were installed in an optimal position in two phases along Burrow Beach. These Seabees were designed to reduce and delay coastal erosion and were put in place approximately 10m from the dune face until a feasible and effective long-term solution is implemented.Fingal County Council plans to relocate 70 seabees which were recently moved without authorisation causing damage to the dune system at Beach Lane.In addition Fingal County Councilâ€™s expert engineers have undertaken a review of current survey data and assessed the current optimal position of the Seabees in order to continue to reduce and delay coastal erosion. Given the changing alignment of the dunes, some of the Seabees will be relocated inland to maintain the original design.The remedial works outlined above commenced recently and will take approximately three weeks to complete. 12

Niamh’s Super ‘7 a Day’ Roasted Veg With Wintry weather and the season for colds and flu, the below recipe is a simple way to help achieve ‘ 7 a day’ for fruit and vegetables and boost intakes of the all important nutrients for our immune systems including Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Make a big batch and use leftovers the following day or to make a ‘veggie’ tasty soup!!! Please feel free to use whatever vegetables you like or are available/in season.Although as the saying goes “Variety is the spice of life”!!!

3 Sweet potatoes 2 Carrots 1 Courgette 2 Red onions 4 Cloves of garlic 1 Green pepper 1 Yellow pepper 1 Red pepper 10 Cherry tomatoes 1 Chilli (or 2 depending on if you want it hot!) 4 tablespoons Balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons dried Basil or other herbs

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 200’c. 2. Prepare all vegetables by washing, peeling and chopping as appropriate. I diced, sliced and roughly chopped my vegetables into chunks as in the image. 3. Place the sliced sweet potatoes with x2 tablespoons Balsamic vinegar onto a large and long baking tray. Bake in the oven for 20minutes at180’c (160’c fan oven) Gas mark 4. 4. Remove tray from oven. Turn the sliced sweet potatoes around on the tray and add the carrots, red onions, garlic, chilli, herbs, spices and the other x2 tablespoons Balsamic vinegar. Ensure all the vegetables on the tray are coated in the herbs, spices and Balsamic vinegar 5.Place tray back in the oven for another 15minutes. 6. Remove tray from oven. Turn vegetables around to ensure even cooking. Add the

remaining vegetables left (peppers and tomatoes). Place back in the oven for another 15minutes or until the vegetables are cooked how you like them!

(Tip: Some vegetables take longer to cook than others hence the different lengths of baking time for the different vegetables)

Neil reverse sweeps a four.

Fingal County Council is delighted to learn of Rush Cricket Club’s Neil Rock selection to the Cricket Ireland’s Senior National squad for their forthcoming tour of the UAE in January. Neil, born and raised in Fingal has a fine pedigree with no lesser judge than ICC award-winning Fingal Development Manager Brian O’Rourke rating him as ‘one of the finest wicketkeeper batsmen I have worked with’.Aged just 20, Neil is already a former Leinster youth captain, Catholic University School and Glenwood High School student in South Africa.He has made a rapid rise through the cricket ranks of Irish teams featuring for the u15, u17, u19s, Academy, and A-teams.He had a most successful u19 World Cup campaign in 2018, held in New Zealand, scoring 235 runs in six games joining former Leinster batsmen Eoin Morgan, Kevin O’Brien, Lorcan Tucker, Harry Tector & Jamie Grassi who returned similar impressive batting statistics at previous World Cups.Neil has also already made 38 appearances in Ireland Inter-Provincial cricket, making him one of the most capped aged 20-year olds in Ireland. Almost all these appearances came against his teammates in Leinster, playing for Munster and Northern Knights, such has been Ireland’s desire to find games for him and the talent available to Leinster in the wicketkeeping department. LSA – Lambay Sports & Athletics, you local club!

Over the next few months we’ll be showcasing the range of groups we have within the club, for both adults and juveniles.Part 1 - Youth/Adult Masters and Seniors Sections of the club. Masters/Seniors Half/Full Marathon Group.This group was developed from a huge local interest in more competitive endurance running and has gathered momentum since Spring 2020, growing hugely in popularity. Athletes train together on Wednesday evenings at 7pm and Saturday mornings at 10.30am, usually for interval sessions. In between, our experienced coaches provide training schedules and support to athletes via Clubzap and WhatsApp. Our athletes and coaches have completed half and full marathons, some in very competitive times. A number of our adult members have also competed in middle distance races in Athletics Ireland track events and Championships. Our marathon/half marathon coaches are Shane O’Farrell, Fintan Counihan, Patrick Phillips and Steven Rice.Youth/Masters/Seniors - Track and Field - competitive

Sprinting, throwing and jumping. - Our coach Gerry Ronan, is a level 4 Track & Field Coach. Gerry has many years of experience and expertise in this area. Training takes place at various times and locations. This section of the club is a competitive track and field group taking part in sprinting, jumping and throwing Athletics Ireland leagues and Championships. Proposed Junior Parkrun at Millennium Park Needs You! Fingal’s Sports Office are looking for expressions of interest from people who would like to be part of a volunteer team to organise a new junior Parkrun being planned for Millennium Park in Blanchardstown once Government restrictions on sporting events are lifted.Junior parkrun is a series of weekly two-kilometre runs for children aged 4 to 14 held all over Ireland and the event is free to participate in, safe for users and can be completed by running, jogging or walking.There are a number of junior parkrun events around the county but none in the Dublin 15 area so for this fun run to happen we need volunteers to give just 1-2 hours of their time on a Sunday morning!A team of volunteers is required 16

to organise the event each week. It is really easy to volunteer and none of the tasks involved are too stressful. Among the tasks you could be involved in are: organising the finish funnel, operating the timer, or scanning the runners’ barcodes with a barcode reader.
