DP Menâ€™s Shed staying in touch by Zoom Like others in these challenging times, Donabate Portrane Menâ€™s Shed has been hugely affected by the Covid-19 lockdown. Many of our members are cocooning due to age and/or health conditions and obviously our weekly get-togethers and other activities, including work on our allotment, have been suspended until further notice. Nevertheless, we are managing to keep in touch by telephone and through Zoom. How have your finances changed since COVID-19? By Dave Kavanagh A lot has changed with people’s finances due to the impact of COVID-19. Both income and expenditure look very different for many, as well as an added uncertainty in the weeks and months ahead. So what can you do to be a bit more in control of your finances? Firstly, deal with the “new essentials”. If your income has been reduced, work from the figure you are certain of. List essentials like food, utilities, mortgage etc. It may be that you have availed of a lender’s option to have a payment holiday for a few months. If you are still stretched, you may wish to temporarily freeze contributions to things like saving plans or pensions. Next, prioritise other things that you pay for. Be careful with things like life cover, mortgage protection, serious illness cover etc. If these type of plans were let lapse, there may be difficulty getting them back in place again if your health has changed since commencing (not to mention any impact from COVID-19 on premiums or underwriting. In reverse, if you were considering commencing plans like these, it would be wise to do so sooner, while there is still a degree of certainty.) Fraud - There has been a substantial increase in attempts of fraud, primarily

with “phishing” texts or emails. The most common appear to come from banks, PayPal, Apple Support and even Welfare pretending to give you payment information. Do not click on any hyper links in these messages and pay closer attention to your banking transactions. When shopping, make a list of exactly what you need and stick to it. This can reduce your shopping bill and prevent throwing out food that goes off, as well as reducing the time you need to spend in the shops. Overall, it comes down to making some time to go through your finances to put you in control of them and not them in control of you, therefore reducing anxiety around money. We in AAfA Donabate Portrane thank all the businesses on our peninsula for their support to members Particular thanks for the support of those who are unable to shop because they are cocooning or who have underlying serious health issues. Your efforts, during this Covid 19 crisis, allows them to socially distance and stay safe. We would like to thank our 3 pharmacists, Jane, Nuala & Kevin for their unfailing good service. We particularly want to thank those that keep us with the basics - the toilet rolls, fresh food and gardening materials - for their great service. SUPERVALU DONABATE have offered a tremendous service with DEREK in his taxi shopping and delivering groceries and essential goods to AAfA members, who really need it. This is done with great humour, speed and efficiency! If one has to visit the shop the staff are absolutely brilliant - friendly and helpful. 10

Age Action administer a Financial Hardship Fund so welcome to many people. The libraries have Borrow Box online. This is only a snapshot of the services! I thought i would write and let you know that for the last two weeks my three kids, Erin Aged 10, Mya Aged 8 and Issy Aged 5 have gone online every morning at 10am and do a fun fitness sessions for any kids who want to join in.It started out just for the children of the members of Mojo Fitness that I train, but it brought such much needed fun into their mornings that I opened it up and posted it live to my public profile Orla Finn PT. It really is amazing the impact it is having on some of the kids. The parents are telling us that they just love it and cant wait to see what crazy stuff happens in each session. Because it is crazy, just like normal family life, there’s no hiding! It also provides some structure to their morning which is also helping parents to get some work done! It would be great if a little picture of them could be put into the May edition so they get the recognition i think they deserve.So never mind Joe Wicks, we have the Mini-Mojos in Donabate bringing fun,fitness and laughter into their homes at a time when it’s badly needed! Fingal County Council public consultation on traffic calming schemes Fingal County Council has commenced a public consultation process on proposed traffic calming schemes it is planning to roll out across Fingal.Measures are being proposed for a total of 12 roads in Donabate, Swords, Rush, Castleknock, Blanchardstown, Ongar, Malahide, Sutton and Portmarnock.The work includes the provision of traffic calming ramps, appropriate road signage and markings where necessary.The public consultation process has now commenced and the plans, which will only be available online due to the Covid-19 restrictions, can be viewed at https://consult.fingal.ie/en/browse. Postman Peter -Our local Hero

My name is Anne and I have lived in Portrane for 40 years.During this time of the Covid pandemic and lockdown I would like to mention the acts of kindness done by our local postman Peter Kavanagh. These are not limited to the time of lockdown but are ongoing.If ever we had a competition for Postman of The Year,I would nominate our postman Peter. He is always so helpful. I know he will keep an eye to the house when I am away on holiday and now in this difficult time of cocooning, he always checks to see if I am alright. He always says if I need anything not to hesitate to ask him and I know he means it. Because he knew I had to cocoon and could not leave my house in his own time he went to collect a parcel for me.Second in popularity in the area is Benjy -Peter’s dog!! Everyone knows him well as he accompanies Peter to deliver the post. I usually have bones for Benjy but recently my supply ended. I happened to say to a friend that my usual supply of bones for Benjy had ran out. Three days later Peter arrived at my door with a small package addressed to me, but the contents were for Benjy. This was a packet of dog chews from my friend so now I can give him one every time he visits.Another memory I have is when my husband was ill - Perter called to our house with a lovely meal prepared by his sister.!!! Not many places have postmen who are as kind as that. Although I am speaking for myself, I know there are so many people in this area who have many stories of his kind deeds Thank you, Peter. Donabate Park Run – How it began Donabate parkrun started in October of 2015 although there was a fair bit of work involved prior to that in establishing the core team of volunteers and measuring out the initial course. Those who took part in that first year will remember the route starting in front of the house and travelling along the service road before finishing on what is now the Croquet lawn. We will be back when it’s safe to do so but let’s take a trip down memory lane in the meantime. Enjoy the pictures!

St Pats- Club is family at this time

With such great sports-weather, it’s no secret that St Pats are missing the action at Ballymastone. The hallowed grounds stand idle while their players train at home. It’s great that everyone’s staying active and we hear that all the chat groups are ablaze with competing 5km times – some more plausible than others!! Training at home is all well and good and certainly beats not training at all but the best thing about clubs is the camaraderie and the chats and the crew –all of which are being sorely missed in Pats. Everyone continues to wear the green and black and are chomping at the bit to return to action. In these days where family is so important, Pats remind everyone of the GAA slogan #ClubIsFamily. They’ve embraced this maxim and since early March, have been running their Helping Hand drive. If you need help, just PM the Facebook page StPatsGAA or call 087 925

The Club and its members recognise the immense sacrifice the men and women of our front line staff and first responders have made during this pandemic.By way of recognition and appreciation on September 4th 2020 Donabate Golf Club are inviting staff from the frontline services and first responders to join us for a relaxing day of golf. This will of course be subject to H.S.E. protocols and Government guidelines.A four person team scramble competition is being organised with place prizes plus nearest the pin and longest drive competitions for both the ladies and gents. Upon check-in our guests will be invited to have a light lunch and will then have the opportunity to avail of the clubs extensive practice facilities before teeing off.
