ACTIVE AGE for ALL – Successful Registration and New Course Active Age for All had a very successful Registration for their new classes this September. Many registering were returning for their fourth year. Ever popular classes were, Yoga and Pilates. Sit and Get Fit which has gained in popularity each year, and is now fully subscribed. We have introduced a new class this year Stronger for Longer, a fitness class for older people, this has proved to be such a winner than we are running two classes. Music and Singing, is proving very popular with both men and women has some places left, as does Bridge. Line Dancing also has spaces. Bowling, Croquet, and Table Tennis, are Free and they all have spaces. Pickleball is a brilliant game for those who are fit and with expert coaching it is worth giving it a try, there are places available. We hope to introduce a new course soon called Silver Threads. This pilot project will introduce some aspects of life writing or life story telling over 4 weeks. Participants will attend 4 x 2-hour workshops facilitated by Silver Thread, where they will gather memories and stories, on paper or orally, working with old photographs from their own family albums. We are very excited about this new course and we will send all the information to members in the near future. Serious safety concerns must be urgently addressed - Johnston Corina Johnston Labour Party Local Area Representative for Donabate and Portrane is calling on Fingal County Council and Glenveagh Properties to urgently address serious safety concerns arising from breaches of planning conditions associated with the Semple Woods Development on the Hearse Road. Johnston said “The Donabate Local Area Plan states that prior to any units being sold or occupied in the Corballis West Development a continuous footpath connecting the Hearse Road development to the village shall be provided. Despite residents moving into the development in recent weeks the continuous footpath and toucan crossing, which also forms part of the planning permission, has not been completed. Residents are obliged to walk to and from the village and the train station without the footpath and toucan crossing. This is a serious safety issue and is totally unacceptable. Residents are extremely concerned for their safety when walking along this road and demand action by the council. The safety of residents must be a priority.”Johnston said “Fingal County Council have informed me that there is an on-going planning enforcement case on this matter and a Warning Letter has been issued to the owner of the lands. This is totally inadequate. Fingal County Council must now instruct the developer to commence these works immediately to ensure the safety of residents in accordance with the planning conditions. This work should be carried out during the night as the Hearse Road is currently closed at night to facilitate other infrastructural works. This is an ideal opportunity for the developer to complete these works with minimal disruption to the wider community”

all facilitated by AAfA who play there every Wednesday from 1-3pm under the wing of

Donabate Golf and Donabate Portrane Tennis Clubs Joint Open Day

Donabate Golf Club and Donabate Portrane Tennis Club are jointly holding an Open Invitation Day on Saturday October 5th for prospective new members who might be interested in joining either or both clubs.The Golf Club was formed in 1925 and now has a beautiful manicured 27 hole championship layout (recently hosted the Irish Boys U 16 Championship event August 21st), together with modern 2 storey clubhouse with full catering and bar facilities.In addition the golf club have recently completed a magnificant upgrade to their 2 practise areas to USGA standards.Before the official opening we invite golfers to sample a 9 hole round of golf from 1pm. Short game areas will also be open to

test your skills.The Tennis club was formed in 2016 and is located on the grounds of the golf club and can now boast of 6 new all weather floodlit courts.Activities on the tennis courts will begin at 2pm with an exhibition class 1 standard mixed doubles match at 3pm.As part of the Open Day there will be a ceremonial opening of our two new Tennis courts and new Golf Practice facilities at 4pm followed by a tea/coffee/prosecco reception in the club Pavilion. Both clubs have great membership offers to coincide with Joint Open Day on October 5th and these can be viewed on each clubs website, and we extend a warm welcome to anyone interested in being part of this unique twinned sporting facility.

Community Council welcomes proposed Eirebus route for Donabate

The granting of a licence to private coach operator Eirebus to operate direct services from Donabate to the city has been welcomed.Donabate Portrane Community Council initiated contact with Eirebus last year, in a bid to encourage it to apply for permission to provide services on the peninsula.Donabate Portrane Community Council has also been encouraging the National Transport Authority to approve additional services.Eirebus has now been granted a licence by the National Transport Authority to operate an express bus service and has had bus stop approvals granted by Dublin City Council and Fingal County Council.Because of the

necessity for confidentiality, Donabate Portrane Community Council has been unable to comment on the licensing process up to now.A spokesman for the community council said: “This is great news for people on the peninsula as there is a chronic infrastructure deficit in the area, and an especially acute problem when it comes to public transport.”A deputation from Donabate Portrane Community Council also recently met with senior management directly in Iarnród Éireann to discuss train overcrowding, and attended a presentation given by them to the Public Participation Network in Fingal County Council HQ last June.

Gaelscoil for Donabate welcomed by Community Council

The decision that the next primary school to open in Donabate will be a Gaelscoil has been welcomed.Minister for Education Joe McHugh made the decision following an analysis of the availability of gaelscoileanna in a number of areas of Greater Dublin.The growing area of Donabate and Portrane already has three primary schools and a secondary school.Donabate Portrane Community Council has welcomed the decision, which follows the setting up of a committee in Donabate to press for a Gaelscoil for the area by the community council.

By Jack N & Neasa B, TY Journalism Our Open Night this year was a huge success! Doors were opened at 6:30, although many students and teachers were here early to set up. Before visitors took their tour around the school, Mr Creevey welcomed everyone to the school and spoke about how proud he was to be principal in DCC. Sixth Year student Cian Smart and fifth-year student Jennifer Thompson spoke to those in attendance about what it was like to be a student at DCC. The students were also introduced to Ms Masterson who will most likely be their year head next year. The speeches were terrific and gave everyone a good glimpse of our school. A short video was played to introduce the large gathering to the different teachers and classrooms before those in attendance were divided into smaller groups for tours. Visitors could partake in different activities including table tennis, playing instruments and solving maths puzzles. Down in the P.E area, there were competitions between friends over who could balance the longest, or who had the fastest reactions. In the science lab, students were taught an experiment whereby they could place their hand over a flame without getting hurt, not something you should try at home though.Another room that was high on everyone’s list was the library. Our library, only redecorated two years ago, was a huge hit with both students and parents. With its comfortable chairs and beautiful artwork, it’s no surprise that our library was so popular.As our visitors walked around our school, many 1st year students were answering questions. Teachers were happy to explain what subjects they teach to our visitors and helping and giving advice on subjects and subject choice.During the Open Night, students and teachers were still continuing to cycle as part of the Cycle Against Suicide and we were delighted to see both parents and potential students joining in to help the cause. Many thanks to all the staff and students who welcomed our visitors with such enthusiasm. Overall it was a brilliant night and was definitely one of our best so far! Happy halloween! Spooktacular bites for Halloween! This time of year brings lots of colourful vegetables such as butternut squash, sweet potato, kale, beetroot, carrots, parsnipsand of course the Halloween tradition.....pumpkins!!!!Autumn also brings a chillier change in the weather so it is brilliant that we have all these bright veggies to stock up our wholesome soups, casseroles, stews and make us feel warm from the inside out! Especially if we are out venturing, trick or treating or celebrating our Celtic festival ‘Oíche Shamhna’.Here’s a few fun ‘fang-tastic’ ideas to make sure we are getting our fill of nutrition and not just filling with treats!

Cheeky Cheesestring Broomsticks! and peel back the cheese 1.Cut a cheese string in half strips at one end. three quarters of the way into into the opposite end. 2. Push a bread stick or pretzel

Spooktacular Sweet Potato Shapes • • • • •

2 large sweet potatoes makes about 30 shapes of varying sizes! Preheat oven to 200’c. 1.First wash and peel the sweet potatoes. 2.Slice into circles. 3.To speed up cooking time, boil the sweet potato slices for 8 minutes. (The water from boiling could be used as stock for asoup/ casserole as it will contain some nutrients that leached out of the sweet potatoes!) 4.Drain and place the shapes on a baking tray. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of oil and add herbs/spices of your liking! (I like mine with Balsamic vinegar and black pepper!) 5.Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes at 200’c to get them nice and crispy!

1.Wash and dry the peppers. Then slice around the top of the pepper and lift this new ‘lid’ off. • 2.Scoop out the inside of the pepper. • 3.Using a sharp knife carve the face or whichever design you like into one side of the pepper. • 4.Fill the pepper with an already cooked wholesome meal, hummus or filling of your desire! • 5.You could also roast the peppers to make them softer to eat by placing them on a baking tray • with oil/baking sheet and place in the oven at 200’c. for 30-35 minutes.

St Pats Ladies Through to the Cup Final

This year saw the launch of the nationwide 20x20 campaign to champion girls and women in sport. It hopes to get a 20% increase in women playing sport along with 20% increase in watching women’s sport and a 20% increase in media coverage. You’ll have seen the hashtags #20x20 and #CantSeeCantBe being used on a lot of media.At St Pats, they’re delighted to have met their criteria of increasing their ladies & juvenile player numbers. to the mentors, coaches & parents who’ve worked so tirelessly behind the scenes. They now field teams at Academy (U5-U7), U8, U9, U10, U12, U13, U14, U16 & U18 level along with a strong G4M&O Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others group.At the recent All Ireland final between Dublin and Galway, 250 supporters headed into Croke Park in coaches, cars & trains all bedecked in blue with touches of their beloved green & black. Their cheers added to the record 56,114 attendance to produce a wall of sound that saw Dublin claim

their third consecutive Brendan Martin Cup.In the new year, they put together a new ladies squad under the new management of Aidan Coppinger, Adrian Brophy & local man Niall Collins. Their numbers have grown since the beginning of the year and they fielded well at Championship and League. Their Cup campaign has gone from strength to strength and they recently beat Stars of Erin 6-08 to 2-01 in the semi-final. The Club are looking forward to the Final next month and wish the ladies every success.

Meanwhile Pats Junior mens football squad finished their strong season with a 6-20 to 0-07 win giving them back-to-back promotions. This squad - lead by mentors Donal Kinsella & Bill McGillicuddy– have trained ceaselessly all year working through Leaving Cert & College exams and putting in hard shifts at every game. The team has a mix of youth & experience which has made for a fantastic squad mentality with buy-in from all the players. The fact that they put in such a strong performance on the morning after the Drive For Five All Ireland Final speaks wonders for the level of commitment these lads have for their teammates, mentors & club.Pats regularly use the hashtag #ProudToBePats on their social media. Speaking to the players after the game, it’s obvious that this mantra has permeated into all levels and all codes in Gaelic Games in Donabate. With a solid minor team graduating into the squad for 2020, hopes are high for another strong season from the men in Green n Black!
