What you need to know to shop smarter! By Dave Kavanagh As we approach the dreaded (by some!) back to school time, and then head into the run up to Christmas, there’s a few things you can do to take some of the pain out of shopping (and hopefully leave you with more left in your pocket or purse!) As a starting point, knowyour rights and be aware of shop psychology. Under the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, as a consumer, you have the right that anything you buy should be of “merchantable quality”, thatis, suitable for the purpose for which it was designed. So for example, if you buy a fridge and 15 months later it stops working properly, you have the right to have it rectified, by repair, replace or refund (usually in that order). If a shop tries to tell you that the warranty was only for one year, you should point out that the warranty is a manufacturer’s extra and that your contract is with the store, it does not affect your rights under the act. Keeping your receipt as proof of purchase is important.Even if something is marked as “20% off ”, it does not mean it is not cheaper in a nearby store that has no sale. (I recently purchased a multi function printer for €159. I researched a number of options for the exact same printer and it was also on

sale at various prices right up to €459!) So My advice to you all is do your research. Putting some thought and planning into the Christmas season now,can also make things a lot easier. A few practical tips are:Leave the credit card at home. Make a list of who you need to buy for and stick to a budget for each that is affordable. Avoid the panic of last minute shopping. Discuss with family and friends the idea of doing a Kris Kindle,where each draws one name and buys them a nice present instead of having to buy 20 different ones. You could be saving someone else a lot of pain this way.Be realistic with food shopping Christmas week. Our Donabate Local recipe columnist and nutritionist Niamh Arthurs has been volunteering over the Summer in Uganda, Africa with 13 other volunteers as part of a multidisciplinary team including nursing, physiotherapy and nutrition/ dietetics. Their work involved a range of areas including running a 2-week cerebral palsy camp for 25 children which had a tremendous impact on the families who found new hope and support. These families are now linked in with and will be followed up by the Kisiizi Hospital Rehabilitation team. Niamh also provided training to nurses and nursing students on Naso gastric tube feeding, malnutrition screening and treatment to hospital staff and key community outreach workers, nutrition education to communities and 1:1 dietetic and nutrition advice for specific cases. 8

Niamh says, “Building rapport and working alongside employees in the hospital was of pivotal importance in order to enable long lasting changes to occur. It would be similar if someone from another country came into Ireland and told us how to do things better. They may have a point, but we would be reluctant to completely change our ways all at once. We would probably be more open to ideas and to listening to others if we felt our own voice was heard and understood. Our volunteering organisation (UCDVO) are well known and appreciated in Kisiizi. These connections and established relationships really helped us in implementing change and encouraging developments a lot quicker. Another thing we were advised before travelling there, was to teach and do things that could be continued after we left. Otherwise things would

shortly return to the way they were before we arrived. So no short term fixes.One of the greatest realisations I will take with me is to appreciate “life in all its fullness” which is the motto of Kisiizi hospital. We can live on so little and be very happy as the people in these communities do. They live simple, basic lives and are generally happy doing so as they know no different. Yet still having the worst day here is equivalent to one of their best days. I hope everyone has enjoyed their Summers... wherever it has taken you!”

Leaving Cert Results Success at Donabate Community College

The annual wait for exam results ended on Tuesday morning in Donabate Community College as this year’s Leaving Certificate students gathered to collect their results from School Principal, Mr. Anthony Creevey. Parents and teachers waited as students received their results and the nervous faces vanished as the all-important envelopes were opened. The Class of 2019 in Donabate CC have worked hard and this showed in their incredible results. The comradeship amongst this year’s class was especially evident as they congratulated one another and assisted one another in the counting of their CAO points. Giorgia Tanner was the cohort’s highest scorer with an incredible 577 points. She is hoping to study medicine and her advice to anyone thinking of doing similar was to take the HPAT very seriously and treat it as an extra subject to study from fifth year. This will help to take the pressure off around the time of the mocks when the HPAT exam is. In total, eleven students achieved around and above the 500 points mark which is an incredible accomplishment. Orla Cahill received 556 points, she is hoping to study Global Business in DCU with a focus on Spain. 10

Jennifer Banayo received an excellent 555 points. Molly Laforgue and Eve Moore both received 541 points and while Molly is hoping to study European Studies in Trinity, Eve is hoping for a place in UCD studying Languages, Linguistics and Cultures. Eden Milne and Carl Pogue both received 532 points. Eden is hoping to study Biomedical Science at DIT while Carl is hoping to study Geology. Receiving 531 points, Cian Jinks is hoping for a place at Trinity College where he will study Computer Science. Trinity College is also the destination for Laura Burke as with her 518 points she hopes to study Social Work. Olivia Dolan received 499 points and is hoping to study Biomedical Science while Ellen Dunne is taking a well-earned gap year after receiving 498 points. This year’s Class have outdone themselves with 58% receiving more than 300 points. Very well done to all our students who achieved their potential across the entire spectrum of subjects. The Class of 2019 had some parting words of advice for the incoming Leaving Cert class. Their first suggestion was that study needed to be regular. Students need to try and study from the start of the year, to ease pressure at exam time

and particularly for the Oral exams in language subjects. The Class of 2019 suggest that you should not compare your results to other people’s, instead believe in yourself and your own abilities and talents. Most importantly, they remind students to take time out and balance it with study as best you can, leading to more productive study time. However, this piece from Eve Moore captures, in our opinion, the best advice; “Sixth year is all about progression and commitment. Start sixth year with determination, drive and an open mind. Don’t expect H1’s from the get-go. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you’re not getting the grades you want in the beginning. If you are trying your best in any subject, you should beproud regardless of any grade received. Stay organised and look after your health and wellbeing. Utilise every resource available in the school and don’t hesitate to ask for help.When making decisions about future colleges, professions etc.; trust your instincts, follow your passions and don’t make decisions about your life to make others around you happy. Also, don’t fret over decisions. Society forgets how young we are in this year. And finally, don’t stop until you’re proud.” Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

Mouthwatering Raspberry Coconut Treat These are a tasty, satisfying and filling treat that can be done in 2 ways: either baked or not baked!My mum prefers the baked version whereas my sister prefers the unbaked so I have included instructions and images for both, the ingredients are the same! Ingredients (Makes 8) • • • • • • • 12

300g Oats 100g Desiccated coconut 150g raspberries (fresh if in season or frozen and let naturally defrost) 3 tablespoons honey or agave syrup or date syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 1 teaspoon coconut oil/butter (I like the flavour coconut oil gives this recipe) 50g dark chocolate

Method: (If baking them, preheat your fan oven to 200’c). 1.Melt the coconut oil/butter. Add in raspberries and mash with a fork. 2.Add in honey, vanilla essence and mix well. 3.Add in oats bit by bit, mixing in between. Then add the desiccated coconut and mix altogether. 4.Place the mixture into a lunchbox or if baking then onto a baking tray. Smooth the top surface using the back of a spoon. 5.Place in freezer for 1-2 hours. If baking then place into the oven for 35-40 minutes at 180’c and allow mixture to cool before the next step. 6.Melt the dark chocolate and pour over the mixture in the lunchbox or the cooled mixture from the oven.

7.For the unbaked version, place the lunchbox back in the freezer for another 1 hour. Then lift out of the lunchbox, cut up and enjoy. For the baked version, allow the dark chocolate to harden. Then cut it up and store in an airtight container. 8.Store in an airtight container. Use the unbaked within 4 days or else keep the cut up bars in a lunchbox in the freezer. ID Tags and The Advantages Of The Microchip For Your Pets Every pet owner wants to keep their beloved cat or dog as safe as possible. You do everything you can do to make sure your pet is well cared for and healthy. If you have an indoor pet, you may not think that keeping identification tags is important, but it is.However collars sometimes become lost. When you consider the fact that many animal shelters only keep dogs and cats for seven days, you want to make sure that your pet is properly identified. That is where the microchip comes in handy. Not only this but it is required by law now that all dogs are Microchipped. You should know that it is a painless procedure for your pet. Your vet will insert a tiny microchip about the size of a grain of rice directly under your pet’s skin using a hypodermic needle. Pet owners love the idea of the microchip because it is permanent. You cannot remove the microchip and unlike a collar or tags, it cannot be lost or destroyed. This is one of the best features of pet

microchip, especially for cats. It is important to get your pet implanted with the microchip at a young age. Puppies can have the microchip at age six weeks. Kittens can also undergo this procedure at six weeks. The insertion of the microchip is not painful and feels like a regular vaccination shot. You

can have your pet implanted with the microchip at your veterinarian office and can expect to pay between €30 and €50 for this service, some vets and shelters often run “Free Microchipping” Weekends or even weeks! If you want anymore information on pet identification don’t hesitiare
