Launch of Fingal Libraries’ Summer Stars Fingal Libraries launched its annual Summer Stars Reading programme on Saturday 15th June with a fun performance for all the family by Reuben the Entertainer at Blanchardstown Library. Summer Stars is an exciting, reading-based programme available free of charge to all children across the country. It will run in all Fingal libraries until 31st of August with the ultimate goal of encouraging reading during the summer holidays. All children are invited to register for the summer reading challenge with rewards and incentives along the way and a grand finale event at the end for all participants.As part of the programme, a range of children’s events will be held in Fingal libraries during the summer to suit all interests – including author visits, technology workshops, creative writing, music, arts and crafts and magic shows and lots more, so do not miss it! County Librarian, Betty Boardman, comments: “The Summer Stars Reading Programme is a fun way to keep children reading over the school holidays. €283,811 funding for childcare providers will boost available places – Reilly New funding of €283, 811 will lead to the creation of additional childcare places in Fingal, a Fine Gael Senator has said. Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone has announced a total of €6.25m in capital funding to providers of Early Learning and Care and School Age Childcare this summer. Nationally this will lead to an increase of more than 3,600 childcare places for children up to age 15. Senator James Rreilly said, “This funding will lead to additional places for children aged 0-3 years, as well as new school age childcare places, locally. This investment is a welcome boost for parents in the county and another step towards nationwide affordable childcare provision, something that Fine Gael has prioritised.Affordable and accessible childcare is something that the Fine Gael-led Government has been striving to achieve.Our Independent colleague, Minister Zappone, has been driving improvements in the childcare sector and will continue to do so.”The Senator said

“Parents and children deserve access to high-quality, affordable childcare that will allow families to choose the type of work and home-life that best suits their needs. This capital funding will also provide grants for fire safety improvements for community-owned services.The funding decisions have been made following a competitive application process and I would like to congratulate the providers who have been successful.” Announcing the money, Children’s Minister Ms Zappone said: “Quality accessible affordable childcare requires investment. The funding being announced today will translate into over 3,600 new and extra spaces for children up to the age of 15. It is another step as we seek to address the decades of under-investment and neglect by successive governments. Overall Government investment in early learning and care has jumped 117% since 2015.” Pobal have begun notifying all applicants of the outcomes of the capital decisions.

Fingal County Council Appointed as Airport Noise Authority Fingal County Council has been appointed as the Competent Authority for the purposes of aircraft noise regulation at Dublin Airport by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, TD. The Council received formal notice of its appointment today and will now proceed to establish the Aircraft Noise Competent Authority. Following the signing of the Aircraft Noise (Dublin Airport) Regulation Act 2019 into law on May 22 by the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, Part 1 of the Act has now been commenced which allows Fingal County Council to proceed with the formal establishment of the Authority. The remaining sections of the Act are not yet commenced. The Interim Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly, said: “Fingal County Council has a track record of performing the role of competent authority in areas such as planning and environment and does so in an independent and transparent way. Appointment as the competent authority for Aircraft Noise Regulation is no different and all necessary specialist expertise will be assigned to the role. The Aircraft Noise Competent Authority is required to operate within the parameters of the relevant European and Irish legislation in carrying out its mandate to regulate aircraft noise at Dublin Airport.�

Application Lodged for the proposed new Broadway Way Fingal County Council has lodged an application with An Bord Pleanala for planning consent for the Broadmeadow Way, a proposed new walking and cycling greenway route of approximately 6km in length between Malahide Demesne and Newbridge Demesne in Donabate. The proposed development will run across the Malahide Estuary adjacent to the mainline railway viaduct and will, if approved, provide an iconic route for walkers and cyclists of all abilities and ages to enjoy this stunning coastal route.It is expected that it will ultimately connect with the proposed Fingal Coastal Way, a 32km high quality, recreational stretch of greenway connecting Donabate, Rush, Skerries, Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan and Bremore Castle. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Anthony Lavin said: “I am delighted to see that this project is progressing and that an application has been lodged with An Bord Pleanala. It is one of the projects that I, along with my fellow councillors in Malahide and Donabate in particular, have been pushing for, and it is great to see it moving forward. This piece of greenway infrastructure will provide considerable benefits not just for tourists visiting the area but also immeasurable quality of life benefits for residents.”Interim Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly: “This scheme will bring huge benefits to the communities along the route and provide a destination greenway for visitors to the area also.”

summer holidays…..
With 9 weeks of no school looming, it’s time to start thinking about how to fill those weeks!!!! On mams.ie we have a whole section of activity ideas for rainy days and sunny days. First up, the beach. Pack a picnic, bring some toys and off you go! A clever tip is to collect seashells and stones in sandcastle buckets to bring home. The children can wash, dry and paint them (do this on a rainy day with some newspaper set down). Once the colourful shells & stones are dried, pop in a colourful tumbler and hey presto, gift for Granny! When the weather is good, we like Viking Splash Tours, Irish National Stud Kildare and Glasnevin Cemetery. The Glasnevin tours are surprisingly interesting. They have some wonderful stories such as the person who was buried twice! Great for the whole family and there is a nice café on site too. For days when the weather is not so good Wax Museum and Dublinia are excellent indoor 10

activities. Funtasia Waterpark has bowling, skywalk (for brave kids & adults!), play zones for smaller kids and of course, the waterpark. All indoors. Keep an eye on their FB & website for offers. The cinema is a good for rainy days. Look out for family offers and deals, e.g. Arc Cinema has a fantastic family deal for 2 adults & 2 children (or 1 adult, 3 kids), with movie tickets, popcorn, drinks & sweets for €39.95. If you are looking for a family break, Fota Island Resort in Cork is wonderful. As well as the hotel, there are holiday lodges for family stays. There’s a fairy wood, kids club, pool and host of family activities. Fota Wildlife Park, beside it, is a wonderful day out. And Cobh is close by with Spike Island and Escapade Cobh escape room – really good fun! For breaks on the East coast, The Village Hotel Bettystown has a great family offer running this summer. 2 nights for 2 adults & 2
children with B&B and one dinner is €335 and families can access the local pool too. Or make the most of the wonderful beaches and go for a dip in the sea! And don’t forget The Fleadh from 11-17th August in Drogheda! If you are thinking of summer camps, we’ve found 2 quirky ones! Hamsters - Fuzzy Balls Of Fun
As a child, most of us grew up with hamsters or friends who had hamsters. Even our children are fascinated with the small fuzzy creatures. There are many types of hamsters, dwarf, Syrian, Russian,Chinese, and hybrid. The hamster is a burrower so they prefer to have lots of bedding to hide underas well as tubes to create little nests in. The most difficult aspect of hamsters is telling if they arefemale or male and being wrong. Who has bought two hamsters thinking they were the gender and ending up with ten hamsters!Hamsters are relatively easy to take care of. You can feed them hamster food, vegetables, and little hamster treats to give them a good life. The bedding should be changed weekly or twice a week depending upon how many hamsters you have. The downside to hamsters is their short
lives, most live only a year or two. There are lots of hamster accessories from tubes to wheels. Hamsters like other pets need to have exercise so giving them wheels to run on or having a hamster ball to run around the house in is good for them. The tubing and cages come in a variety of colors to add to a child’s fun. You can create straight pathways to other larger home areas or curve them around to re-enter the same cage. Most of the caging is plastic and your hamster will try to chew or claw there way free. You will want to monitor their activity when you clean the cage to make sure they are not producing a hole. Some hamster owners go with a metal wire cage with tiny slits to avoid the chewing escape. Your preference will determine the type of accessories you purchase.
Handling hamsters should be kept to a minimum and you should always wash your hands before and after. Hamsters can have a tendency to bite if they are not handled at least once a day or if they become scared. Be cautious with little children.Hamsters are a lot of fun for all ages and an easy pet your child can care for. You will want to make sure you feed your hamster properly by not over feeding them and while maintaining properexercise. A cautionary note before concluding this article: Dwarf hamsters are very susceptible to infections with cedar chips because it can tear holes in their tiny mouths, so make sure you talk to a us when selecting the appropriate bedding for your hamster.

Ingredients
140g prawns 1 red pepper 5 (closed cup) mushrooms 1/2 cucumber (200g) 3 scallions 6 sun-stream tomatoes 30g pine nuts- toasted 75g mixed leaves (Spinach, Wild rocket, Red chard, Ruby Chard) Optional could add: red onion, beetroot Dressing of your choice or mix

(in a food processor/blender): 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar, 30mls extra virgin olive oil, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger, 1 tablespoon sesame seeds.
Method 1.Prepare and chop the salad ingredients and make the dressing as directed above. 2.Cook prawns as per instructions on food label. 3.Marinate prawns in the salad dressing as you assemble the other chopped salad

On May 26th players from St Ita’s AFC girls teams, their families and friends participated in what will hopefully be the inaugural St Ita’s summer 5k fun run in support primarily of the Irish Cancer Society. This is the first time the event has taken place and about 60 runners of all ages took to the start line on Portrane beach on one of the finest days of the year so far. Under the backdrop of some spectacular beach and sea views an enthusiastic group of participants had to run the first half on sand, then had to contend with an up hill climb for about 1km before taking themselves Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

The end of the run marked the beginning of the end of season party which once again was a massive success and a great family day out.
