Deadline targets must be met for solution to protect the Burrow Corina Johnston, Labour Party local area representative for Donabate and Portrane has called on Fingal County Council to meet their own targets for delivering a long term solution to the coastal erosion crisis at the Burrow in Portrane. Johnston said ” The Council are expecting to receive a number of options for protecting the peninsula from the consultants in April. From then the Council will work to consult with local stakeholders with a view to having a long term option agreed by June. The Office of Public Works and the National Parks and Wildlife Services are included in the process of selecting a long term solution which should aid a smoother and quicker transition into the implementation stage once the optimum solution has been agreed. These deadlines have to be met and this cannot creep through the Summer and into the Autumn, when weather systems become more intense.” Johnston added, “The Seabees whilst initially welcomed have raised further worries as to the impact of erosion at other parts of the beach. The whole peninsula of the Burrow needs a permanent solution. I have spoken to Deputy Brendan Ryan who has a written commitment from Minister Boxer Moran that he will support whatever is agreed by Fingal County Council. So the road seems relatively unobstructed towards getting a solution agreed and ultimately delivered. No efforts can be spared”

Henchy welcomes new pedestrian crossing to Newbridge House

Cllr Adrian Henchy has welcomed the recent opening of the new crssing from Turvey Avenue to Newbridge House. He said, “I am absolutely delighted to see at long last the new pedestrian crossing and opening into Newbridge House and Farm from Turvey Avenue become operational from today. Wonderful to see so many families already using the entrance this afternoon coming to and from the park. My sincere thanks to everyone in the Operations department Fingal County Council for all their work at this new entrance and indeed all the very positive work in and around Newbridge House and Park. One of the first persons I met house calling in Turvey Avenue, 5 years ago was Geraldine McGuinness who together with Breda Dockrell and many many others living on Turvey Avenue were strident in campaigning for a new pedestrian entrance into Newbridge House and farm from Turvey Avenue. It was lovely to bump into Geraldine at the newly opened entrance this afternoon and hear how delighted she is with this positive step. This new opening totally transforms the pedestrian ease of access into the park from Donabate village. It has been in the plans since 1983 so absolutely delighted to not only see it open today but to see it being used by so many people. Great credit to my colleague also Cllr. Paul Mulville who together with me has been pushing for this new entrance since the very first day we were both elected in May 2014. The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival celebrated International Women’s Day in great style on Friday March 8th.The exhibition “Na Gúnai Álainn” was opened by Jacinta Lowndes. “Na Gúnai Álainn” were provided by the Mna na Leithinse – the Women of the Peninsula, many loaning their wedding dress, The St. Vincent DePaul Charity Shop in Malahide loaned a large selection of stunning designer wedding dresses. The costumes hired from The Abbey Theatre were wonderous creations, Mary McDermott’s Irish dancing costumes, with their detailed embroidery, gave rise to conversations comparing today’s costumes.Norma O’Brien’s beautiful Indian sari had many advisors as to the way it should be worn. Jennifer Mawell’s story and display of her Granny’s nightdress and undergarment was the 10

source of much laughter.Peig McManus read her story called “Pendulous” , which was written specially for the day. The visit of Mary Derwan and her team from Marks and Spencer’s Lingerie Department was very popular and there was a steady stream of clients for their bra fitting services. The young designers from Scoil Phadraic Cailini provided a creative and colourful of Gúnai Álainn. Mary Farrell was so impressed by their exhibition that she sponsored a prize. Local artist, Marese Murphy, after much deliberation, chose Lily Gleeson’s design. Congratulations Lily!Young people who visited the exhibition were encouraged by Marese to create a design on canvas and these creations will be on display in the Community Centre.

There was also a large selection of books for children. Afternoon Tea was sponsored by SuperValu and Wayne Hand from Café Natural. We would like to thank all the women who did Trojan work to make this exhibition take place. The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival Committee is working on it’s upcoming Festival – 5th – 15th September. Fingal Student is Young Scientist of the Year!

Fingal has celebrated the success of its students and schools in the 2019 BT Young Scientist competition, as Young Scientist of the Year Adam Kelly was recognised for his impressive achievement.Tributes were paid at the event on March 11 (Monday) in County Hall, Swords to his family, his teacher Ms Lennon, and his school, Skerries Community College, for supporting and aiding Adam’s winning efforts. Students, teachers and family in attendance from Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan, St. Joseph’s in Rush, Portmarnock Community School, Le Chéile Secondary School, and Coláiste Pobail Setanta were also praised and recognised.Adam’s win continues a tradition of victory for Fingal students in this competition. In 2016, Maria Louise Fufezan and Diana Bura claimed the prize for Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan. Adam’s project, entitled “Optimizing The Simulation Of General Quantum Circuits”, explores efficient ways to mathematically model quantum computers.Quantum computing uses subatomic particles to drive computer calculations and processes. It is a complex, emerging field with exciting technological and scientific applications, including the possibility of increased computing speed and power.Following Adam’s victory in the all-Ireland competition, he will go on to represent Ireland at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists

which will be held in Bulgaria this September. Speaking at the celebration, Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Anthony Lavin said: “It’s highly encouraging to see so many Fingal students and schools getting involved and active in science.“The discoveries made by Adam and the many other students who took part in the Young Scientist competition are already doing things that impact us all. From

national to local issues, from climate change to commerce, we need the ingenuity and curiosity that these Young Scientists have shown.” Fingal County Council has been active in promoting STEM to students and children, with Fingal Libraries hosting STEM Saturdays events in 2018 featuring coding, robots and engineering through LEGO.

Come along to Donabate Portrane Community Council AGM Donabate Portrane Community Council has called on residents in the area to attend its annual general meeting. The AGM will take place in Keelings, Donabate, on Thursday April 4 next. The community council aims to be a strong voice for the area.It is seeking members to join it, particularly if they have expertise in areas that could help strengthen the organisation.People with experience in finance and/or fundraising, environmental issues, engineering, planning, IT, and dendrology have been encouraged to step forward to join the community council. The community council is a fully constituted body. It is an independent group with no political affiliations. It is formally recognised by Fingal County Council. It has been in existence for decades. Its focus is on the chronic infrastructural deficits on the peninsula. There is also an emphasis on the safety of children, as they have to go and come from school while large numbers of 12-wheel vehicles pass them, due to heightened construction activity in Donabate.Other priorities include ensuring there are sufficient primary school places for the fast-expanding population, and that the promised road improvements are delivered on. There are 25 places on the committee of the community council. Donabate Portrane Community Council represents the interests of all the residents of the peninsula and supports development of the community through: • Giving everybody an opportunity to become involved in turning the community into a better place. • Identifying opportunities for enhancing the area. • Monitoring threats and informing the community. • Supporting local clubs and voluntary groups. Dowling pledges support for sustainable development

Fine Gael local election candidate for Donabate and Portrane Bob Dowling has re-iterated his support for sustainable development in both Donabate and Portrane. Mr. Dowling, who was speaking at a recent public meeting organized by Donabate Portrane Community Council, said that he wants to see the necessary infrastructure in Donabate and Portrane provided for. “I have been very clear on my policy on this issue from day one, I am in favour of sustainable development, which does require housing but also importantly the necessary infrastructure to allow for successful social integration and community involvement”, he said. The meeting, which was attended by over 100 people, heard from many contributions from local residents who agreed with the position that Mr. Dowling had explained. “Over the last 18 months or so, things have gotten progressively worse on the peninsula. There appears to be no enforcement from Fingal County Council towards construction traffic who are breaking their planning conditions, there is regular traffic congestion due to a lack of a traffic management plan for the area and the local people have had enough. I was delighted to hear of their support for infrastructure, as well as the necessary housing but a

clear emphasis has been put on sustainable development by the people of the area”, he stated. Dowling also says that he found it “surprising” that others at the meeting found it difficult to support sustainable development, and promised to support the residents of Donabate and Portrane in the future. “I was genuinely surprised to see some public representatives’ fall short of pledging themselves to sustainable development, given the serious issues that many of us in the area face on a daily basis. I do not believe that requesting the necessary infrastructure for the area is unreasonable or asking too much, considering what the residents have had to put up with recently”. Finally, Mr. Dowling said he would be continuing his own local campaign on this issue over the coming weeks and months and promised to work for sustainable development in the council if elected in May. “I was delighted to negotiate, as Chairperson of the Community Council in 2006 a good, sustainable development plan for the area of Donabate and Portrane. If elected, that is exactly what I will work towards in the future. This was previously agreed with the community over 10 years ago, and I promise to bring back the good nature of that plan”, he concluded.

What you should know about Serious Illness Cover By Dave Kavanagh If there is one aspect of protection that crops up time and time again, it’s Serious Illness Cover (a.k.a. Critical Illness Cover or Specified Illness Cover) but not always for the right reasons! Quite often, the topic comes up because someone has received unpleasant medical news and it prompts them to consider the “what if ” scenarios. Sadly, in many cases, it is too late at this point to be permitted to take out Serious Illness Cover. The usual medical underwriting that takes place when someone applies for cover is more stringent on Serious Illness Cover than it is for say, Life Cover. The reason is that you are far more likely to be diagnosed with one of the Specified illnesses during the term of a plan than you are to pass away.So what exactly is Serious Illness Cover and why is it so important? The cover will pay out a tax-free lump sum on diagnosis of a large number of Specified Illnesses. While the list is quite long, the vast majority of claims are for the “big 5”, Cancer, Heart Disease, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis and Loss of Independence. It is not dependent on your ability to work

or the severity of how you are affected. If it is one of the definitions covered, you are paid. The best time to conside. Serious Illness Cover? Is when you don’t think you need it! DCC Rugby 8 v Ardgillan CC 7 DCC’s senior rugby team were crowned victors of the North Dublin Cup after defeating Ardgillan Community College in a thrilling final encounter in Abbotstown, winning 8-7. The game started well, with both teams forging attacks. However, Ardgillan broke through DCC’s defence and Gabriel Akinwande burst into action, making a vital tackle and preventing a try ten yards from the tryline. Moments later, Ardgillan broke through, scoring the first try of the game and conversion of the game. DCC reacted in fine fashion. After a long build up in play, Jack Kinsella ran through the Ardgillan back line scoring DCC’s first try of the game. From a tight angle, the conversion kick was missed. DCC went in at half time trailing by two points with a 7-5 scoreline. Ardgillan began pinning DCC back into their half, and piling the pressure on DCC, however, the team held strong and were rewarded with a turnover, giving the team a great boost. DCC controlled the end of the game, dominating possession. With less than a minute remaining and a point behind, DCC were awarded a penalty kick after some great attacking play. Conor Kennedy kicked over the penalty giving DCC a two point lead in the dying moments in the game. Congratulations to the team and Mr Holton. It was an incredible team performance and each and every player fought for every play to bring home the North Fingal Cup. We are immensely proud of their achievements. Royals Visit Donabate Golf Club

On Saturday 16th February 2019 the King and Queen of Hearts planned to attend Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland. However the GPS in their vintage car brought them to Donabate Golf Club. Instead of playing a game of croquet they played golf. A guard of honour of past captains and members were ready to meet the new 2019 captains for their Golf Drive off dressed in colourful Royal Costumes.This was the largest attendance ever seen at Donabate Golf Club. On a beautiful sunny day, Captain Joe Rice, Lady Captain Synnott and our Junior Captains

drove off from the elevated tee box watched by family, friends and a very large number of members.The four drives would do justice in any longest drive contest. Lady Captain Gráinne in her speech thanked past captains for a fantastic welcome and for their dedication to Donabate Golf Club.They are the foundation of this Golf Club which has grown from a nine to a fabulous 27 holes Golf Club. We are looking forward to another successful year in Donabate Golf Club. Captain Joe Rice thanked the many active volunteers in the club,

a great junior section, which has produced some wonderful players.The Tennis Club section has over 400 members and is planning to build extra all weather courts. The new Golf practice putting greens and bunkers together with the driving range and short course practice areas are on target to be available this year. There was a Singles Competition and two nine holes pair’s competitions with over 190 players on the day followed by a superb meal in the restaurant.The late night ended with some music and dancing.

Mount Anville HC 0 v Donabate CC 1 The Donabate CC Junior girls hockey squad ended the season on a high with a great performance against Mt. Anville at the Leinster Finals held in Three Rock Rovers Hockey Club recently. Three Rock Rovers, ground is a neutral venue with tip off set for 10.15 that morning. The girls talked tactics and began their last game of the season with a strong attacking mindframe. Mt.Anville had tip off but Donabate quickly gained possession and controlled the first half with brilliant link play between midfielders and forwards to get many chances of scoring the illustrious first goal.Donabate excelled with speed, outrunning Mt. Anville’s defence, thus creating a oneon one between Ella Jinks and the Mt. Anville goalkeeper. Jinks made no mistakewith the finish and DCC led by a goal to nil with only a few minutes left until half time.Donabate then turned defensive with Neassa Bissett saving the game and not letting anything past her, showcasing her talent and training form from throughout the season. Half time saw Donabate leading the game with a score of 1-0. When the game restated the girls knew they had to give 200% to leave Three Rock Park with the cup. With some great advice from their

coaches, the girls went into the second half confident and determined to win.Donabate had tip off this time with Jinks starting the game with a tactical pass to Neville who brought the ball up strong. The girls worked as a team with great link play. The Defence distributed the ball to midfield with Eva Van Dreumel and Charlie Mangan running the wings giving opportunities for more goals. Despite huge pressure and a number of short corners from Mount Anville, they could not get past the DCC rearguard and when the whistle

blew, DCC rushed to celebrate winning 1-0. It has been a terrific season in school for hockey, capped nicely by becoming Leinster Junior C Champions 2019.
